TEMPUR-Pedic Contour Reviews

1. TEMPUR-Pedic Contour Rhapsody Luxe – Editor's Choice

Highlights

  • Softness: medium-firm
  • Sizes: twin long, queen, king, split king, CA king, and split CA king sizes
  • Cooling: no
  • Thickness of Comfort Layer: 2”
  • Density of Comfort Layer: 7.1 lb/cu.ft.
  • Mattress Thickness: 13.5”
  • Warranty: 10 Year Limited

Pros

  • Good for stomach and back sleepers
  • Good for heavier combo sleepers
  • Motion isolation is excellent

Cons

  • Takes time to break in
  • Slight off-gassing may be present
  • Foam may compress quickly and not bounce back as much

This is the softest of the Contour series and is considered a medium-firm surface comfort geared for back and stomach sleepers, combination sleepers, or heavier side sleepers due to how well it supports your overall weight. The first two layers of the bed are 4.5 inches thick, with the first 2 inches weighing in at 7.1lbs/cu.ft, and supported by 2.5 inches of 5.3lbs/cu.ft foam. The remainder of the bed includes 2 more layers of poly foam to provide a foundation, as well as overall weight distribution and breathability.

The mattress is a total of 13.5 inches thick, and is one of the highest profile offered by the company to make sure pressure points are alleviated correctly and support is offered for all body types.

This is a good choice for sleepers with partners due to the overall softer feel that is better for a variety of sleeping positions. It is also an excellent choice for back and stomach sleepers. This particular Contour mattress seems to be one of the top selling choices due to a good balance of body contouring and support for a wide span of body types.

2. TEMPUR-Pedic Contour Elite

Highlights

  • Softness: Firm
  • Sizes: twin long, queen, king, split king, CA king, and split CA king sizes
  • Cooling: no
  • Thickness of Comfort Layer: 1.2”
  • Density of Comfort Layer: 7.1lb/cu.ft.
  • Mattress Thickness:12.5”
  • Warranty: 10 Year Limited

Pros

  • Supportive of heavy body weights
  • Good motion isolation
  • Geared for back and stomach sleepers

Cons

  • Often too firm for lighter bodies
  • Side sleepers may experience pressure points
  • Thin comfort layers

This is the firm mattress of the Contour line, falling between the most firm and the medium firm Rhapsody Luxe choices. Although the Tempur website lists it as a medium-firm choice, it is more firm than the ‘softest’ choice, so for this review we consider it the firm pick of the three offered.

This 12.5 inch thick mattress has 2 initial comfort layers that measure 3.6 inches thick total. The first 1.2 inches are of the 7.1lbs/cu.ft HD foam, supported by 2.4 inches of the Tempur 5.3lbs/cu.ft foam. LIke the Rhapsody Luxe, the remaining two layers are a poly foam and help distribute body weight and provide support to both the sleepers, and structure of the mattress.

This mattress truly is focused for back and stomach sleepers, offering a slight sink according to reviewers that provide good contouring support, but doesn’t envelope you in foam. Tempur-Pedic Contour reviews mention that heat retention is very minimal with practically no complaints, making this a cool sleeping pick for hot sleepers. Lighter bodies, or side sleepers may find they experience pressure points, but it should be a good choice for heavier bodies of any sleep position preference.

3. TEMPUR-Pedic Contour Elite Breeze

Highlights

  • Softness: Firm
  • Sizes: twin long, queen, king, split king, CA king, and split CA king sizes
  • Cooling: yes
  • Thickness of Comfort Layer: 1.2”
  • Density of Comfort Layer: 7.1lb/cu.ft.
  • Mattress Thickness: 12.5”
  • Warranty: 10 Year Limited

Pros

  • Gel infused sleep comfort
  • Good for back and stomach sleepers and heavier bodies
  • No deep contouring

Cons

  • Breeze option may feel more firm
  • Additional cost for cooling option
  • May cause pressure points

Like the Contour Elite, the Elite Breeze is the ‘firm’ option of the Contour choices, but many people have noted that when comparing the two, the Breeze feels more firm. Although they are supposed to be of equal comfort, with only a gel-infused top layer of foam being the difference to improve upon cooling, it also may affect the overall comfort level.

This 12.5 inch mattress has the same 3.6 inches of foam, but the first 1.2 inches of 7.1lbs/cu.ft foam is infused with a patented cooling gel to help improve upon airflow and provide a cooling comfort by drawing out and dissipating body heat. The Elite mattress is already considered a cool sleep, but the Breeze choice has made it even more popular. The additional layers are as described in the original Elite with layered poly foams for heat dissipation and weight support.

This is a good choice for anyone suffering from nighttime heat issues, including heavy bodies and back and stomach sleepers.

4. TEMPUR-Pedic Contour Supreme

Highlights

  • Softness: Firmest
  • Sizes: twin long, queen, king, split king, CA king, and split CA king sizes
  • Cooling: no
  • Thickness of Comfort Layer: 1.2”
  • Density of Comfort Layer: 7.1lb/cu.ft.
  • Mattress Thickness: 11.5”
  • Warranty: 10 Year Limited

Pros

  • Excellent back and stomach spinal support
  • Good contouring without deep sink
  • No motion transfer

Cons

  • Not for side sleepers
  • Expensive firm choice
  • Foam changes with room temperature changes

This is arguably the firmest of all mattresses offered by the Tempur company. It is a firm choice specific for spinal support needs surrounding back and stomach sleepers, especially for heavier bodies. The layered memory foam is supposed to provide the proper amount of sink and uplifting support to keep pressure point prone areas of your body cradled. Hips and shoulders are especially prone to pain due to poor support layers.

The Contour Supreme has four inches of layered memory foam comfort, with the first 1.2 inches weigh in at 7.1lbs/cu.ft of HD foam. The remaining 2.8 inches of 5.3 lbs/cu.ft are Tempur foam and works to provide support and weight distribution to the remaining 7 inches of supportive poly foam.

No heat retention complaints exist surrounding this model, but it isn’t the best choice for many. The firmness of this choice provides slow, body heat dependent foam sink that may be particularly uncomfortable for light sleepers. Back and stomach sleepers will reap the most benefit from the Supreme, but pressure points can be caused through the hips and shoulders due to the nature of the foam ILD rating.

Why TEMPUR-Pedic?

Tempur-Pedic introduced their patented memory foam to the sleep industry in 1992, forever changing the way consumer’s viewed their personal sleep comfort. Through the years the company has continued to introduce, tweak, and create new ways to keep their consumers happy with updated mattress construction and a line of products that utilize the Tempur Foam comfort.

This foam adapts to your unique shape, weight, and sleep preferences to alleviate pressure points, provide whole body support, and minimize motion transfer to keep you sleeping all night long.

What is a Contoured Mattress?

Tempur foam was first created through the 1970’s and 80’s for NASA’s Space Flight Program. The foam was eventually not used, and the scientists behind it went on to introduce their creation to the public through the use of mattress layer comfort.

Although the patented foam construction is under lock and key, the formula is comprised of a viscoelastic polyurethane foam, an open-celled foam that allows increased airflow and responds to your individual body properties to provide you with a personalized sleep surface. The company layers their foams with poly base foams to provide breathability and varied levels of firmness.

The Tempur-Pedic Contour Line of mattresses utilize the High Density (HD) foam and their original Tempur Foam in multi layered thicknesses to provide three different sleep levels of comfort with an additional Breeze choice as a cooling option. The Breeze line uses an additional infusion of cooling gel into their top layer of foam for added airflow and cooling properties. Each product falls into the firmer side of the spectrum surrounding comfort.

To date Tempur-Pedic offers three main series of mattress comfort lines: the Contour, the Cloud, and the Flex. The Breeze mattresses utilize the most popular of these former series and add in the gel infusion.

Density and ILD Measurements

When reviewing quality claimed products, it’s important to recognize the terminology and understand what measurement of quality is being used. Tempur-Pedic does use good quality materials compared to many competitive mattresses on the market.

Memory foam quality is defined by the density of the foam as pounds per cubic foot, with an average, acceptable quality foam falling between 4.0 and 5.0 lbs/cu.ft. Tempur foams fall into three categories, their extra soft (ES) foam, Tempur foam, and high density (HD) foam. The ES weighs in at 4.1lb/cu.ft, with the Tempur and HD at 5.3 and 7.1lb/cu.ft respectively.

Density is not a reflection of firmness levels however. How soft, or firm, your sleeping surface is is measured by the indentation load deflection, or ILD. The lower the ILD the softer your foam is. Many times these measurements can be misleading as the ILD can change due to foam compression due to weight application, humidity, time, and heat variations.

It isn’t always very easy to get this information concerning Tempur-Pedic foam measurements. They do not easily disclose these details, and often third parties, such as this blog, need to be depended upon when researching information about your mattress choices.

Warranty and Sleep Trials

Tempur-Pedic was one of the first companies to offer a sleep trial, essentially claiming that is you weren’t 100% satisfied with your purchase, you could return it for a full refund. As with most things there is a bit of a catch as you have to have had it for 30 days to truly determine that it isn’t for you, and you are responsible for shipping fees, both ways.

A 10 year, full replacement limited warranty is also included with all mattresses that aren’t being phased out (and are generally on clearance as well). Defects in workmanship and materials are covered under this, but the deal can be voided with any sort of moisture spill or stain, as well as the use of an unapproved platform support.

Tips to Choose the Best TEMPUR-Contour for You

If you feel that the Contour Series may be a good choice for you, you’ll need to narrow down which one is your best fit. Even though all of the mattresses are found on the firmer side of the comfort spectrum, they do have varying degrees of contouring support and give to best fit your unique body type.

Are you a combination or side sleeper?

Combination or side sleepers may not find the Contour line as comforting as other Tempur-Pedic choices. This is especially true if you are a lighter, overall weight as there may not be as much give to the memory foam and underlying foam layers. If you believe the Contour is the right choices, consider leaning towards softer side of firm.

Are you considered of a heavier weight for your body type?

Heavier bodies often prefer the additional support a firmer mattress lends to their sleeping comfort, no matter their prefered position preference. This is due to the higher density foam used in the Contour line that still provides a soft sink, but not so deep of one.

Do you often get hot at night?

Memory foam mattresses are occasionally known for heat complaints. Lucky for you the Contour Series has very little heat issues mainly due to the higher density foams combined with a more firm surface that doesn’t allow the ‘enveloping’ of the foam around your body like a softer foam does.

Is there another person who shares your bed with you?

Taking into account your partner is always a smart thing to do if you don’t want to be sleeping forever alone. Firmer mattresses are not for everyone, so you may want to double check the needs and preferences of your mate before making a final decision.

Conclusion

Originally, the Contour line included a few more choices, including the Contour Signature, Contour Select, and Contour Allura. Through the years the company has narrowed down consumer choices to the best sellers to help focus their efforts to create the best sleep possible to the best of their models.

If your sleeping preference includes firm mattress comfort, and you like the soft sink of memory foam, then the Tempur-Pedic Contour line of mattresses may be worth considering. Depending on your body type and unique needs, any of the three choices above may work for you. Take into account first of all the firmness levels, especially if you have a partner as the too firm a choice may be very uncomfortable for some sleepers.

Proper spinal alignment for back and stomach sleepers is a focus of this collection, as well as proper support and weight distribution for heavier bodies without sacrificing the comfort of memory foam sink.
