TEMPUR-Pedic Contour Elite Breeze

From the start, The TEMPUR-Pedic Company sought to address customer’s unique needs with a variety of mattress comfort levels using their patented memory foam construction. The Contour Series was an early addition to the company as a more firm sleeping surface in answer to their customer’s needs. Firm surfaces provide the support for natural spinal curve, and are the choice most often sought after by back and stomach sleepers to alleviate back pain.

Without sacrificing the famous memory foam sinking feel, TEMPUR-Pedic combined a surface level of foam comfort with supporting layers to help create firm mattress choices. The Contour Elite Breeze has all the characteristics of the Contour Elite, and is a medium firm surface, but it also has the added comfort of the Breeze design for cooling comfort.

Breeze mattresses were most recently updated in 2016, and are available in twin long, queen, king, split king, CA king, and split CA sizes. Plus it is available for use on any of the optional TEMPUR foundations including the UP and ERGO designs.

Features & Benefits

The Breeze Line was introduced in 2012 to address the many complaints that arise surrounding the heat retention that is fairly typical of any memory foam mattress. This is just one of the many innovative applications of technology TEMPUR-Pedic has applied over the 25 years of business. Since memory foam is more enveloping of the body, it has a tendency to create heat sinks. The Breeze mattresses help address this by using materials that better move heat away from the body and dissipate it into the surrounding air.

The TEMPUR foam is a viscoelastic polyurethane foam that is comprised of an open celled design and allows increased airflow. When layered it creates the individualized feel that has brought customers back through the years. Plus they have expanded their line of merchandise to meet varied consumers needs by adding bedding, pillows, protectors, toppers, and even slippers to their shopping experience. This is what has kept the company going as a top leader in the industry despite the advances in the technology that has allowed an increase of competition through new mattress startup companies.

If you are wondering if there really is a marked difference between a TEMPUR-Pedic memory foam mattress and a leading competitor, simply head down to a nearby showroom and check it out yourself. Personally, I was unable to tell the difference, and the only thing I noticed was the much more hefty price tag.

Construction

As mentioned, the layered mattress design typically used with memory foam helps create a flow of air through the channels and provide a cooling effect. As with all of TEMPUR’s designs, the first layer you experience is the quilted SmartClimate cover that is made of moisture wicking fibers to help move humidity and body moisture away from the body, as well as provide protection to the mattress beneath.

The Breeze version of the Contour Elite is a 12.5 inch thick mattress with four layers of foam. The first layer is a 1.2 inch TEMPER-HD (high density) comfort layer that weighs 7.1lb/cu.ft. and is infused with TEMPUR’s PureCool technology which is supposed to draw any excess heat away from the body and channel it to the layers below.

This comfort layer is supported by a standard 2.4 inch thick TEMPUR foam that weighs 5.3lb/cu.ft. Beneath this comes two more layers totaling 8.9 inches of a general poly foam that weighs approximately 2.0lb/cu.ft. These bottom layers serve as a supportive base layer and also provides additional air circulation and heat transfer control.

Foam Density Explained

Foam density is the measurement of foam weight, and helps explain the overall quality of the foam being used. Finding information concerning the densities of TEMPUR foam has been a source of contention for many consumers as there is a very real lack of transparency surrounding their product value. Because of this, with a little research, you can find information on this through third parties who have gotten this information to share with the general public.

Foam density does not explain foam softness as many think it does, rather it helps explain how well it will hold up over time. A higher density foam that weighs more is a higher quality foam and will last much longer and compress less over time that a lighter choice.

The memory foams used in the Contour Elite Breeze are of decent quality and are also considered high in comparison to other memory foams used in the industry for similar purposes. It’s safe to say the memory sinks should not occur easily upon this mattress, and proper shape and bounce back should be distributed evenly through the life of the product. What is unfortunate is that only a mere 3.6 inches of quality memory foam is used in this mattress- which measures 12.5 inches thick overall.

With the advancement of technology and tech based advertising there has been a recent shakeup of the mattress industry through new startup companies. This lack of transparency could become somewhat problematic to brand named base companies such as TEMPUR-Pedic as quality products begin to be offered for a fraction of the cost online.

Comfort

Despite this increase in competition, TEMPUR-Pedic has managed to be an industry leader due to their evolving approach to customer needs, as exemplified by the creation of the Breeze Mattress Series. Heat complaints across the board forced the company to look to new designs for a cooler night’s sleep, and thus was born the TEMPUR-Breeze, which has recently evolved to include updated material technology.

The Contour Elite Breeze is a mid-range firm mattress within the Contour line, and is a bit more firm than soft. Since it is preferable to back and stomach sleepers, it has become a go-to due to how it alleviates back pain for TEMPUR-Pedic fans. As newer Breeze creation, very few reviews exist online, but of those who do most say they can’t tell much of a difference between the Elite and Elite Breeze, although some reviews feel the Breeze has a more firm feel to it. Negative comfort reviews complain of it being too firm for their body type or sleeping position.

The introduction of memory foam 25 years ago as a revolutionized mattress material changed the way people viewed personal sleep comfort. Gone were the few choices created from spring coils that were designed to hold the body up, and instead a memory foam that allowed you to sink into it’s comfort without sacrificing support was born. This quickly became popular with other brand names, and it wasn’t long before memory foam, and memory foam hybrids were commonplace on the market.

Heat Retention

It’s not anything new to hear of memory foam being overly warm to sleep upon at night- which is why TEMPUR-Pedic invented their Breeze line to begin with. The Contour series mattresses have very low complaint rates due to their firmer mattress surfaces which don’t envelope you in material like the softer tops do, but the Breeze choices have almost none at all due to their use of cooling materials and added technology to help circulate air and wick away heat and moisture.

Maintenance, Care, and Warranty

Although you may hear that you do not need to flip or rotate your memory foam mattress due to it being only one sided, understand that keeping your mattress on a good rotation schedule (every 3 months or so) will help keep it from uneven wear or foam compression over time.

Consider also keeping a waterproof mattress protector on your mattress since the washable, zip off cover only provides minimal protection. Spills that stain or soak into the foam can damage it over time and cause a breakdown of cellular structure. This also will void your warranty.

A limited, 10 year, full replacement warranty comes with all mattresses sold by TEMPUR-Pedic and their authorized dealers. This warranty covers replacement and repairs on product defects only, and is subject to what your mattress rests upon. Flat, stable bases are suggested as traditional mattress supports, such as box springs, can ruin the integrity of the mattress support. There is also a 90 day sleep trial available to consumers with an approved credit check.

TEMPUR-Pedic Promise

A quarter century of dedicated mattress construction can be seen through TEMPUR-Pedic’s constant evolution and application of innovative technology to their products. Your best night’s sleep or your money back is a common phrase used in the mattress industry, and The TEMPUR-Company seems to stand by the phrase with their 90 day sleep trial and warranty services. Their dedication to the sleep industry can be seen through their product lines and recognition as a top industry leader for over two decades.

Consumer Proof

Even though this is a fairly newly designed mattress with few overall consumer reviews, those that do exist, and third party consumer reviews rate the Contour Elite Breeze fairly high for firm mattress comfort and a cool night’s sleep. Heavier bodies seem to be the most comfortable, with lighter weights having some issues with pressure points, especially if they were not a back or stomach sleeper. The most noticeable concern, however, surrounded the price of the product, especially since there was very little noticeable difference between the Contour Elite and Breeze option other than the significant price hike.

Conclusion

Of all the choices offered by The TEMPER-Pedic Company the Contour line is by far the most firmest- and when it is combined with the patented Breeze Technology, you have a very cool sleeping, supportive mattress for back and stomach sleepers. The TEMPUR Contour Elite Breeze is the only Breeze option within the Contour series, and is praised for it’s subtle memory foam feel and more supportive surface. However, some issues have been noticed with how the foam takes a much longer time to break-in and soften to your body, as well as a possible noticeable issue with there being practically no difference between the two other than the price tag.
