Head and Neck Alignment

Tempur-back-and-neck-alignment.jpg

Your overall health is highly influenced by the rest you receive, and being able to sleep uninterrupted, allows your body to properly cycle through sleep stages that support both growth and healing. Support to your cervical spine is a crucial part of this process and choosing the sleep products to hold your body correctly should be seriously considered.

Your pillow is almost as important as your mattress choice and needs to hold your head in alignment with your spine, and allow for your soft tissues of your neck and shoulders to relax.Your sleep position is personal to you, and needs to be supported correctly. When reviewing your pillow choices, be sure to invest in a pillow that you know will work best for your individual needs and preferences.

tempur-symphony-back-sleeping.jpg

Back Sleep Position Needs

Thin, responsive pillows are needed to hold the head in alignment, and also provide for enough neck support.

Elite-Rest-stomach-trial.jpg

Stomach Sleep Position Needs

Thin, soft, and responsive pillows need to help keep the head as low as possible to better support the spine, and keep stress off the lower back.

tempur-neck-pillow-side-sleeping.jpg

Side Sleep Position Needs

Higher profile, firm pillows should allow for the head to be held between the shoulders, and also allow for enough filling to fill the gap between the the head and shoulders for neck support.

What is a Memory Foam Pillow?

Viscoelastic polyurethane foam is the technical name for memory foam, an open-celled, contouring foam first created for the NASA space program. It is a material that provides a personalized comfort as it reacts to your unique body shape, size, and heat to create a sink that fits you perfectly. Because of this it has become a popular fill within the sleep industry.

viscoelastic-foam.jpg

Foam quality is defined by the weight of the product. This does not at all define the firmness of softness of the foam surface, but rather helps explain the density of the foam. An accepted quality foam is usually above 3 lbs/cu.ft. with the heavier weights defining a more dense foam that may be slower to react under your heat and weight.

The softness of the foam is defined by the Indentation Deflection Load (ILD). This is the measurement that illustrates how easily foam compresses under weight, and is not always consistent. Thickness of the foam, humidity, age, etc…can all affect this. The lower the number, the softer the surface, the higher the number, the more firm the surface.

Types of Memory Foam Pillows

The differences between these types of foams are not only determined by quality and ILD. It is also used and shaped in various ways to meet specific comfort needs. Because foam is created as a solid core initially, it can actually be shaped and contoured. This can be extremely beneficial for cervical alignment.

Memory foam can also be shredded and/or blended with other fibers to create variances in comfort. Some of these pillows may feel more like a down and feather pillow, or even be adjustable to create highly shapeable sleep surfaces. Foams also can be infused with gel to create a cooling sensation through the physics of heat conduction.

FineFeather-100-Hungarian-White-Goose-Down-Pillow.jpg

Pillow Loft

The loft of a pillow is determined by how high it is when it lays flat. This is not always very indicative of overall feel (for example, a high profile down pillow may actually be a thinner, softer feel when compressed). Since foams are more dense, the loft of these pillow types are a bit more reflective of overall feel, but to truly know if you are considering a firm, thin pillow, or soft, lofty pillow always consider the product specifications and reviews.

Tempur-Cloud-Soft-loft-measurement.jpg

Why Would I Want a Memory Foam Pillow?

These products truly do conform to your unique weight and shape, and are excellent in reducing pressure points. They also are considered a high quality item, and do lend themselves to a wide range of sleep positions and preferences. Just be sure to make sure to purchase the correct size pillow for your comfort as the dimensions of many foam products may be different than the standard size queen and king size pillows by a few inches.

Concerns About Memory Foam Pillows

Coop-HomeGoods-Bamboo-Cooling-Pillow-machine-washable.jpg

These types of pillows traditionally used to be a bit more dense, and slower to respond to your weight than what is currently being offered in the sleep industry. The slow, conforming sink still exists, but advances in technology has allowed for a wider range of comforts to be offered. They also do not sleep at warm as they once did. The denseness of memory foam lends itself to heat retention, but new construction and gel infusion allow for a cooler night’s sleep.

The biggest issue many people have with memory foam is that it is not machine washable. Unfortunately soaking foam in water begins to break down the cellular support structure of memory foam, plus it is very difficult to dry completely. This opens it up to bacterial growth, as well as molds and mildews.

What to Consider When Choosing a Memory Foam Pillow

Obviously, with any purchase consideration, you need to take into account your own needs and wants. But first and foremost on your mind should be the issues you are attempting to address. Most people on the hunt for a new pillow are looking to either replace the perfect pillow they have finally wore out, or find something to correct the poor sleep they are experiencing.

What is your sleep position?

As mentioned above, your sleep position is highly influential on the type of pillow you choose. You need to pick the correct comfort and profile combination in order to provide the best cervical support possible. Just because a pillow looks and feel comfortable doesn’t mean it will a few hours into your sleep. Reading reviews from people with similar needs can help you narrow down your choices.

Do you sleep warm?

As mentioned, memory foam can have reduced airflow due to its structure. Look for gel infused or padded foams, or shredded foams that have increased breathability. The casinghyour pill wois in also can have a lot to do with helping the air  to better circulate- 100% cottons and other natural fibers are a standard go to for this purpose.

Do you wake with aches and pains?

Nobody want to wake in pain each morning. Look for pillows that allow for proper neck relaxation and support, as well as one that holds the head at the proper level. Quality foams are popular choice for this as they don’t flatten out through the night.
