The time has come to buy a new mattress. Although you’re probably excited at the thought of enjoying a new sleep surface, you’re probably experiencing an equal or greater amount of stress. After all, this is no cheap purchase, and you want to ensure you get it right.

I recently had the chance to try out the Nuvanna mattress, and I think it has a lot to offer those who have sleep partners and/or sleep hot. Its construction works to offer a combination of cool, comforting, and supportive sleep. It’s geared to cater the average shopper, thus making it a good solution for combination sleepers.

This product took a couple of days to offgas completely. I was able to sleep on it the first night, but offgassing doesn’t bother me that much. If it does you, you should expect to give it two days to air out. I’ve been using mine for a couple of weeks now, so I’ve had plenty of time to get a feel for how it works. Layers of the Nuvanna Mattress

The Nuvanna mattress is made up of three layers that each has its own method of keeping you comfortable, supported, and cool. Let’s break them down one at a time starting with the cover.

The Cover

Nuvanna’s cover was designed to offer moisture wicking, breathable properties through the use of TENCEL fibers. This material is more absorbent than cotton, cooler than linen, and softer than silk. For those of you concerned with your carbon footprint, these fibers are botanically-derived and eco-friendly.

Since TENCEL® fibers pull moisture away from you, this makes for a more hygenic sleep surface that naturally fights bacterial growth. I really like how soft the cover is. As tempting as it is not to, though, you should still use a fitted sheet and mattress protector to enhance durability.

The TENCEL® fibers make up 31% of the top of the cover and 37% of the bottom. The remaining components are as follows:

Top

• 67% polyester
• 2% lycra

Bottom

• 61% polyester
• 2% lycra

The Three Layers

Moving beneath the cover, the Nuvanna construction starts with the two inch hybrid adjustable ascension layer. It contains change gel particles particularly designed to aid in heat distribution. It’s followed by the two inch memory foam layer. This material is made of a special grade to reduce motion transfer.

Finally, the last six inches are comprised of high performance, high durability, open cell foam. Nuvanna’s Progressive Support System prevents sinkage that’s so common in memory foam mattresses, and it also works to support each area of your body independently to relieve back pain and promote proper spinal alignment. Together, these three layers are designed to offer a superior combination of comfort, cooling, and support in a total of 10 inches.

Now that we’ve had a chance to look inside this product, let’s talk about how it feels to lie on. I like the way the materials found in the comfort zone conform to your body in all three primary sleeping positions. Side sleepers often notice painful pressure points in the hip and shoulder areas, but the layer construction does a good job at minimizing this.

You can definitely pick up on the counterbalance offered by the support layer. Although I do get a high degree of contour, it’s not lacking in its ability to provide proper support. This makes it easier to move around since it prevents excessive sinkage. Since the cover is so thin, I didn’t have any trouble engaging with the comfort layers.

Sometimes this can be an issue since you’ll likely be using a cover or some type of protector. If you do use a thicker mattress protector, you may want to consider a mattress topper that Nuvanna will provide upon request.

Firmness and Sinkage Expectations

Firmness is a very important aspect that can be hard to gauge shopping online, so let’s delve into what you can expect. First, we’ll take a look at the indentation load deflection. Each layer features a different ILD, and they typically go from very plush to a more firm setting in the base. The ILD for the Nuvanna layers are:

    Ascension Layer – 10

    Memory Foam Layer – 20

    Support Layer – 35

This combination is pretty indicative of a medium feel, and that’s what it feels like to me

lying on it. To show you how it sizes up to other products I’ve tried, let’s look at the sinkage that results when I stand in the middle. On a typical medium, I sink in right around 6 ½ inches. On the Nuvanna mattress, the sinkage is 6 ½ inches, making it a great example of a medium firm product. This can prove to be a good fit for people who:

    Have sleep partners

    Are combination sleepers who fluctuate sleeping positions

    Prefer the “Goldilocks mattress”… not too soft, not too firm

Motion Transfer Reduction

We touched on the middle layer and how it’s designed to reduce motion transfer. If you have a sleep partner, this is a very important consideration as movement can be disturbing when it’s able to easily navigate across your sleep surface.

Products made entirely of foam typically do pretty well in this aspect, especially those that contain memory foam. I tested this by dropping a twenty pound medicine ball next to another of equal weight. The resting ball was very minimally affected.

You can watch the video above to see for yourself. You’ll also see as someone rolls around rather aggressively next to me. I think Nuvanna did a great job with the incorporation of the memory foam in the middle layer as it seems to do an acceptable job in keeping motion isolated to the point of impact.

Excellence in Heat Transfer Capability

Cool sleeping is necessary in order to enter REM sleep. This is the stage where your body undergoes the most rejuvenating and restorative processes, so it’s very important you’re able to maintain a slightly cooler-than-normal body temperature.

With the combination of the TENCEL fibers in the cover and change gel particles in the first layer, I was curious to see how quickly this mattress would be able to cool off after lying on it for 30 minutes in a room temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. This process usually takes around 10 minutes based on my testing of over 40 other mattresses.

In the case of Nuvanna, cool down only took seven minutes. Nuvanna reports that their mattress contains the latest innovation in temperature management capable of absorbing and dissipating heat at rates higher than any other foam available in the marketplace.

In my experience, it cooled off 30 percent quicker than other products I’ve tried out, so I would definitely say there’s merit to this claim and recommend Nuvanna as a mattress to closely consider for anyone who struggles with hot sleeping.

Edge Support

Good edge support helps tremendously not only in helping you stay on the bed but also getting out of it. When you sink into the edge, it can be hard to transition out of bed in the morning. You also need adequate edge support if you’re prone to sitting on the edge.

In a 10 inch, all-foam product, we typically see a lack in edge support at the very corner of the mattress, and Nuvanna is no exception. However, the six inch support base does a pretty decent job at providing support when I sit along the edge in different positions. If you’re known to sleep very close to the edge or have a sleep partner, you can see that the mattress does a pretty good job at keeping me well supported when I lie close to the edge.

Durability Expectations

Your investment in a new mattress is a sizeable one, so, before we wrap up, let’s talk about what you can expect in terms of durability. The value you want to look for in this aspect is density.

Many mattress companies do what they can to conceal this information or keep it proprietary altogether. In cases where it is made available, it’s not usually easy to find. I was very impressed with Nuvana’s transparency. They list their densities right on the website, and that’s probably because they have nothing to hide.

In visco foams, you want a density of at least 3.5 pcf with four to five being preferable. The pcf of both layers one and two weigh in at four. Polyfoam is considered durable at a pcf of 1.8, which is what we find in the support base. Considering you can buy the queen model for under $1,000, I think the durability expectations of the Nuvanna mattress are exceptional.

Maintenance, Protection, Care and Warranty

Nuvanna was developed using three-layer engineering designed to help you sleep cool, supported, and with minimal disruptions. I think they did a great job at achieving in all three of these goals.

So, did Nuvanna succeed in their quest to offer a product that helps us achieve balance in mind and body? Considering their superiority in cooling, comfort, motion isolation, and durability, I would say yes.

I felt very well supported on my Nuvanna mattress without feeling excessive sinkage in the visco layers that comprise 40 percent of the total mattress thickness.
