Types of Hammocks

While there are absolutely plenty of hammocks to consider, we’re just going to cover two different types today.

The double fabric hammock is a generic term that covers hammocks that are made with primarily a single type of material or a light material blend. In our instance, we are talking about our double cotton free-standing hammocks we’ve reviewed, more specifically the Brazilian hammock.

These hammocks usually come with stands that are easily put together with a series of nuts, bolts, and poles, usually with very little equipment or tools needed. They can also be hung between two trees, poles, from the ceiling or attached to sturdy walls. They are backyard hammocks meaning they are setup and left alone, not easy to tote around too much as they can be pretty heavy.

These styles of hammocks can definitely raise in the price ranges, but you’re also able to find them mildly inexpensive or at least in the midrange of a set budget. They are extremely comfortable. However, these style of double hammocks, are best for two people and not easily laid in singly.

The camping hammock is our second style of hammock we’ll be reviewing. These camping hammocks are sometimes referred to as parachute hammocks as they are made of the same or similar nylon material blends and also fold and stuff quite small just like a parachute.

Camping hammocks are best hung with straps or ropes between two poles or trees. They can be hung from the ceiling, walls, and on a stand but the length of the hammock bed plus the length of the ropes is specifically designed to go between two somewhat specifically spaced trees to create a nice flat bad. The space restrictions on the other options probably wouldn’t be best to create that effect.

Camping hammocks are very convenient in many ways, though they aren’t cushioned like backyard hammocks, accessories can be purchased to make them more comfortable. They are very lightweight usually under two pounds, require very little tools or supplies, are easily cleaned and stored, and can be less expensive than the backyard hammocks.

Things to Consider

When choosing a hammock some very important things come to mind.

First, you’ll want to set your price range. Now, you’re able to get a quality hammock without spending an exorbitant amount of money. While yes the term “you get what you pay for” is absolutely true, it is only true to a certain extent.

Make sure you set your budget and then shop around, you don’t want to up your budget just because two very similar hammocks are priced completely different. And you don’t want to be purchasing another hammock in 3-6 months because you lowered your budget without doing a little research on the product first.

Next, it’s important to decide the function of the hammock. Do you want to just laze away in the backyard, or do you want to be able to pick it up and go elsewhere if the mood strikes you? Backyard hammocks with stands aren’t going to give you the mobility you are looking for, and camping hammocks require a little bit of strategic maneuvering in order to set them up.

This also falls in line with the weight. The backyard hammocks we’ve reviewed are all less than 40 pounds to carry around, not something you want to be toting around. The camping hammocks are all stuffed in their sacks with their required tools for less than three pounds in total.

Also, how much weight should your double hammock be able to hold? If there will always be two of you laying in it – you want to make sure your hammock can withstand a certain threshold. The hammocks we’ve looked at can easily hold 400 pounds, sometimes more.

Comfort is very important when it comes to a piece of comfortable furniture. You don’t want to purchase a piece of luxurious furniture just to despise hanging out on it. If you’re not an adventurer you probably don’t want a camping hammock, and if you don’t want to be stuck in one place all the time the backyard probably isn’t for you. And that’s okay – just make sure you do your research with these guidelines in your mind and think of just how comfortable you have to be in order to use your stress relieving inanimate caretaker.

This brings me to our next guideline which is to assess your experience level. Now, while laying in a hammock is extremely wonderful and relaxing, I’ve known a person or two who gets anxiety from having to get in and out and even set up and take down their hammock – again they just end up not using it, what a waste!

But let’s say you’re an easy going person who’s never put up a stand for a backyard hammock or hung a camping hammock between two trees. That is okay. Because let’s remember that every expert was once a novice and we live in the 21st century where we all have an amazing amount of informational resources at each one of our fingertips literally all of the time.

Lastly, this is something that is important to me, but maybe not to everyone – customer service. When you’ve done your homework, set your budget, researched the right hammock just for you and you’re still not happy… you should have no trouble continuing your relationship with the company you purchased from. I want to know that my warranty comes with very little (if any) small print and that the company will keep its promises when it says 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Double Hammock Reviews

So let’s get to it and look at the best double hammock reviews we’ve recently had the pleasure of writing ourselves.

1. Best Choice Double Hammock

Specs

  • Warranty – 60 Day money back
  • Weight – 37 pounds
  • Dimensions – 9.5 feet x 4 feet x 3.6 feet
  • Material – Cotton and Steel

This hammock bed is 100% woven cotton, making it tight-knit, warm, soft, and extremely comfortable. It comes with what they call a space-saving stand made of steel and easily put together. But the space saving is relative. Make certain to note just how much space you’ll have to spare for hammocks with a stand – because this one takes up over 10 feet by 4 feet when fully assembled and in use.

It easily holds two people and is laid in more comfortably that way. It can hold up to 450 pounds of weight. The stand comes with several poles, nuts, and bolts but is easy to put together by yourself, even easier with a friend. When hammock season is over you’re able to store away your hammock in the included carrying case that fits all parts of the stand and the hammock bed nicely.

This hammock is also a double Brazilian style and also made of 100% cotton. This is very similar to the Best Choice Hammock listed above with approximately the same ratio of consumer reviews and ratings, however, one major difference is the price. This hammock is almost double the price of the Best Choice.

This hammock comes with a space saving steel stand which is lighter in weight yet takes up a bit more room at almost 11 feet x 5 feet by 7 feet. This stand is rated up to a 450-pound threshold and is easily put together with no tools. Once you’re ready to put it all away it also comes with a carrying case which fits everything in one convenient package.

A look at our first double camping hammock and we’ve got a good one for you. ENO is a small company gone big, coming from grassroots it has really made its mark in the big hammock game. Known for its quality and its excellent customer service, this hammock will not disappoint you.

The ENO Double Nest can hold up to 400 pounds in weight and itself only weighs a mere 19 ounces. It will not weigh down your pack much at all. In the stuff sack, you’re looking at about 5 x 5 inches of space, all sprawled out you’re going to take over 9 x 6 feet, not including your strap length.

Speaking of straps – one downfall is that ENO doesn’t include the necessary equipment to hang your hammock. You’ll need straps and carabiners at the very least to get all setup. But they do offer numerous accessories to make your hammock stay even more comfortable, from rain flys to mosquito nets, once you have the complete package you will be swinging in style.

Bear Butt not only has a cute name but a cute story too. This company was started in the garage of a new couple’s parent’s house and hasn’t stopped growing since. Looking for consistency with their growing family they saw the need for quality, affordable, homegrown camping gear and the dream took flight. Their honest policy and trustworthy brand make the perfect scenario.

This brand also likes to show its muscles, they don’t hold back. They have an extra strong hammock bed made with some kind of magic material that they say legally holds up to 500 pounds, but has been tested way beyond that mark at being able to withstand a whopping 900 pounds… it’s amazing. They promise with no small print if at any point you’re not happy you will get your money back – for your as long as you own the product.

  • Height – 10 feet by 6.5 feet
  • Material – 210T Nylon Parachute

Winner is a little bit different from the other camping hammock companies we’ve seen so far. This is a large international company that has proven itself to its customers over and over. It has a large footprint in the camping gear arena and will most likely stay that way. The consumer reviews speak for themselves.

They are largely impressive by being able to offer incredibly fast refunds within 5 hours, reliable customer service 24 hours and 7 days a week, and hassle-free returns for all of their products. Being international, they are also able to easily ship just about anywhere.

This double hammock also holds up to 500 pounds like the Bear Butt hammock and weighs in at a pound and a half as well. All equipment needed to hang your hammock is included in the purchase and they are able to say it will take you less than 3 minutes to successfully pitch your hammock. Its measurements are almost 10 feet by 6.5 feet in width.

This hammock is definitely the most affordable on our list, perhaps at least, their website states their products are all marked down for sale or discount – but it’s unclear if whether or not these are permanent drops in price, or just for now pricing.

R

Pros

  • Durable
  • Affordable
  • Super fast refunds
  • Straps included
Q

Cons

  • Website askew, not managed well
  • Not the small business other similar companies, boasts international business

Who Wins the Roundup?

This question is just a little difficult for one reason: we’re comparing two different types of hammocks. Though the backyard hammocks are awfully similar and vary just about only in price and warranty, the camping hammocks have different stories and offer slightly more or less depending on the brand.

Because camping hammocks offer more variety and variability in function I think we will bump those to the top of the list and pick a final candidate from those three options we have listed here.

Winner’s offers a ton of options at affordable prices, yet their management of their vocabulary and their website leaves a lot to be desired. But they are affordable and their reviews speak for themselves with it comes to how happy their customers are with the products and customer service.

ENO is a small company that has really blossomed into a now-not-so-small company. They offer quality products, wonderful customer service, and a lot of really great down to earth characteristics in their company atmosphere.

However, I think from the name to the story, from the product to the promise Bear Butt really takes the cake for me. They are an honest company that has made many promises and has proven to stick by them. They are a small local company that can reach their arms pretty far and touches different outdoors communities. They are affordable, quality driven, and of course their lifetime, no questions asked, can’t wait to make you happy attitude toward their warranty is just the kind of no-small-print I like to see.
