TEMPUR-PEDIC Flex Series: The Reviews

1. Pedic Flex Prima – Editor's Choice

Highlights

  • Firmness: Medium-firm
  • Feature: Antimicrobial treatment
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Profile: 10 inches
  • Sizes available: twin, twin long, double, queen, king, split king, CA king, split CA king

Pros

  • Great for back, stomach sleepers
  • Responsive, good bounce
  • Good support base
  • Most affordable of the series

Cons

  • On the firmer side
  • Side sleepers may not be comfortable
  • Could sleep a bit hot

Of the Flex series from TEMPUR-Pedic, the Prima is the firmest of the bunch. What this means is that it’s not going to have as much of that sinking-in feel that you get from memory foam. It’s a suitable solution for back and stomach sleepers because of its medium-firm feel.

The good news is that this is one of the most affordable options in the line, but it’s still made of the same high-quality materials as all the others of the Flex series. The densely-packed pocket coils combined with the high-density foam base layer offer the support your bones need when you sleep.

You may find that this mattress, at least compared to a couple of other Flex mattresses, is that it may sleep hot. Memory foam is known for trapping heat, but TEMPUR-Pedic offers a SmartClimate System, which is in the top fabric layer of the mattress. This is meant to wick away moisture from your body and offer a cooler touch to your body. However, underneath that layer are three separate layers of memory foam that could retain heat.

Like any other TEMPUR-Pedic mattress, the Prima comes with a 10-year limited warranty that covers any manufacturer defects that result in tears, breakdown, or visible indents of more than ¾ of an inch, as long as you use a proper foundation for your bed. The 90-day trial period that TEMPUR-Pedic offers lets you test the mattress out for a limited amount of time, and if you don’t like it, you can return it for a refund – except for the shipping cost.

The Prima is available in eight different sizes, including the common twin, queen, and king sizes. TEMPUR-Pedic also offers this mattress in twin long, split king, CA king, among others.

2. Pedic Flex Elite

Tempurpedic Foam vs Memory Foam: Subtle Differences for Your Unique Sleep Needs

Highlights

  • Firmness: Medium-soft
  • Feature: Antimicrobial treatment
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Profile: 12.5 inches
  • Sizes available: twin long, double, queen, king, split king, CA king, split CA king

Pros

  • Great for side sleepers
  • Motion-isolating
  • Softest choice in series
  • Removeable, washable cover

Cons

  • May be too soft for back, stomach sleepers
  • Sleeps a bit warm

Several features of the TEMPUR-Pedic Flex line of mattresses make them worthy of their steep price, and the TEMPUR-Pedic Flex Elite is no exception. In addition to the support, comfort, and pressure relief you get from this hybrid bed, you also get a cooling layer and a removable cover.

Starting at the top, the Elite mattress is wrapped up in a soft, but durable cover that easily zips on and off, which makes it simple to keep clean. You can throw it in the washing machine – and if it’s worn, you can replace it. The SmartClimate System you’ve already read about is present in this mattress, too. The dual-layered cover offers a mattress that’s cool to the touch and helps wick away moisture that builds up when you sleep at night. Memory foam is notorious for heat retention, and this is TEMPUR-Pedic’s way of meeting that issue head on.

Here’s where the Elite differs from other mattresses in the Flex line: the comfort level. It’s definitely the softest choice among the four bed options, which means you’ll get that cloud-like comfort you want from a memory foam mattress. It has the thickest comfort level of foam among its brethren. It may be too soft for a back sleeper, and if you sleep on your stomach, you may feel like it’s a tad suffocating, but side sleepers love this choice.

Just because you sink into this bed more than others, it doesn’t leave you without support. You get the same pocket coils that are densely packed into the center of this bed just below the response layer. So, you still get that slight bounce you may miss from a traditional innerspring mattress. Wrapped around those coils is a layer of high-density TEMPUR material.

You can expect the same 10-year limited warranty with the Elite mattress that you get with any TEMPUR-Pedic mattress, which protects you against any manufacturer defects. This particular bed is available in seven sizes – the only one missing is the regular twin size.

3. Pedic Flex Supreme

Tempurpedic Foam vs Memory Foam: Subtle Differences for Your Unique Sleep Needs

Highlights

  • Firmness: Medium
  • Feature: Antimicrobial treatment
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Profile: 12.5 inches
  • Sizes available: twin long, double, queen, king, split king, CA king, split CA king

Pros

  • Good choice for all sleeping positions
  • Isolates movement
  • Comfortable, but not too enveloping
  • Removeable, washable cover

Cons

  • Sleeps a bit warm
  • Could sleep a bit hot

Most people who buy a TEMPUR-Pedic bed are looking for a memory foam mattress with brand name recognition from a company they trust to use high-quality materials. But not everyone is happy with memory foam. It sleeps warmer than traditional innerspring mattresses, and they don’t have that familiar bounce they loved about their old mattress. Enter the TEMPUR-Pedic Flex series, and particularly the Flex Supreme.

This mattress gets high ratings because it comes close to being that middle-of-the-road mattress that pleases all sleepers. The combination of comfort, support, responsive materials, and a cooling cover can be comfortable for those who are slight of frame, a little heavier, those who sleep on their sides, back, stomach, or some combination of positions throughout the night.

One of the most important aspects of a bed is its support system. The TEMPUR-Pedic Flex series offers the same supportive layers of dense foam and tightly-packed pocket coils. These are the layers that cradle your body to ensure you don’t sink down too low in your bed. Just above that is the responsive layer, a swath of quick-responding TEMPUR-Response material that gives you a bit of bounce and springiness. It’s what lets you move about in your bed and adapts to your body rapidly.

Firmness is all about how a bed feels when you lay down on it, and the Supreme fits squarely in the medium level. It’s comfortable, but it doesn’t seem to suck you into the mattress, which is important when you sleep on your back or stomach. It’s still soft enough, though, to provide pressure point relief when you sleep on your side.

You can choose among eight sizes for this mattress, which makes this an almost customizable bed. Plus, the cover zips right off for easy cleaning – or if a stain just won’t come out, you can replace it.

The 10-year limited warranty that comes with all TEMPUR-Pedic mattresses is present here and lets you return your mattress for repair or replacement should any defects show up within that time. Just make sure you keep your bed on an approved foundation to keep your warranty valid.

4. Pedic Flex Supreme Breeze

Highlights

  • Firmness: Medium
  • Feature: Antimicrobial treatment
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Profile: 11.5 inches
  • Sizes available: Twin, twin long, double, queen, king, split king, CA king, split CA king

Pros

  • Motion-isolating
  • Offers more cooling
  • Comfortable and supportive
  • 90-day trial

Cons

  • May not be comfortable in cold climates
  • Most expensive in the line

You have to hand it to TEMPUR-Pedic: They listen to what their customers want. One of the biggest issues customers have had with memory foam is that it doesn’t have a springiness to it – when you sink down into the bed, you stay there. The company’s answer to that is the Flex series of mattresses, which are hybrids that combine coils, a responsive layer of material, and memory foam that provides support, comfort, and more of a bounce back that you want. Then there’s the complaint that memory foam is still too hot – even with moisture-wicking fibers that are included in the covers of Flex mattresses. TEMPUR-Pedic’s answer: the TEMPUR-Pedic Flex Supreme Breeze mattress, which includes a cooling material infused into its comfort layer.

So, starting at the base of the Flex Supreme Breeze mattress, you get a high-density foam layer that helps disperse heat from the memory foam layers, but it also provides support along with the pocketed coils that are densely packed in the center of the mattress. Just above that is the response layer that’s made of TEMPUR-Response material – this is what gives the Flex Supreme Breeze its springiness that makes it easier to move in bed.

The comfort layer in this mattress is different than the other Flex options because it combines that comfy TEMPUR-ES material that determines the firmness of your bed with PureCool, a material that cools even more and helps draw heat away from the surface of your mattress. The cover is made of a breathable fabric woven with cooling technology that also combats those warm, sweaty nights.

Of course, you get a 10-year limited warranty with this mattress and a 90-day trial, which lets you try this mattress practically risk-free (if you send it back, you’re out shipping fees).

What’s Different About TEMPUR-Pedic?

A mattress that is both comfortable and supportive may be difficult to find if you’re shopping in the proverbial bargain bin. TEMPUR-Pedic makes high-quality mattresses that combine a supportive core, cushy upper layers, and resiliency for that springy feel are going to be a bit costlier, but they’ll also be more durable so you can keep the same mattress for many years.

TEMPUR-Pedic has been the leader in memory foam mattresses for decades, and the company has recently moved into hybrid mattresses to compete with other companies who have come along. It’s difficult to find specific information, such as foam density, on TEMPUR-Pedic’s mattresses which make it a little bit more difficult to report on durability, but we’ve done some digging and have found some values that we can comment on.

The Flex Series

The TEMPUR-Pedic Flex collection offers four different mattress types that are meant to be responsive to your movements. What does that mean? Well, if you’ve ever slept on a traditional memory foam mattress, you know that feeling of being trapped in your bed. One of the problems with memory foam is that it can sink down too far where your body lays, making it difficult to move – it’s almost as if you have to crawl out of a bed crater.

The Flex series offers foam that responds quickly to your movements, so when you lay down, it sort of hugs your body, but when you move, the foam bounces back quickly and adapts to your new position. If you’re looking for a firm mattress comparison, you won’t find it here. This series of mattresses from TEMPUR-Pedic is on the softer side, but one of the options, the TEMPUR-Flex Prima, offers a medium-firm level of support.

So, what makes a TEMPUR-Flex bed different from all the others? You have to look inside for the answer.

Comfort

Above the core and response layers is a thick comfort layer of TEMPUR-ES material. This top layer is what determines the feel and softness or firmness of your bed. The viscoelastic material relieves pressure at the points you need it most, such as your shoulder and hip, if you sleep on your side.

This is the layer that absorbs movement, so when you or your partner move in the middle of the night, the other shouldn’t even notice it. When you lay down on a bed and you feel that sort of hugging sensation from the mattress, that’s the comfort layer. If you love that feeling, you want the softest of the series, which is the TEMPUR-Flex Elite. Prefer a firmer feel? Go with the TEMPUR-Flex Prima. None of these mattresses in this series are particularly firm, though.

Resiliency

In the center of each TEMPUR-Flex bed is a response layer made of TEMPUR-Response material, which is a version of the TEMPUR material that has a faster response. What this means is that you get that familiar bounce-back feel that you’re used to from an innerspring mattress, but it’s made of foam.

A mattress with quick response means you can easily get out of bed without feeling like you’re in quicksand. It also offers that bit of bounce that you don’t get from a regular memory foam mattress. Another reason this resiliency is important is because it makes it easier to move on the bed itself.

Without beating around the bush here, this response material means sex is less challenging than on a memory foam bed. You’ll be able to move more easily, whether you’re on the bed or getting out of bed.

Support

The core of a Flex mattress is where you’re going to get the support you need to help with spinal alignment. This is what’s going to prevent you from sinking down too far. In the TEMPUR-Flex series, you get a hybrid mattress that combines that proprietary TEMPUR material and individually-wrapped coils.

Between the dense memory foam at the bottom and all around the edge of your mattress and the tightly-packed innerspring pocket coils, your body will be supported through the whole night.

It’s the pocket coils that help the mattress conform to your body, which provides that alignment of your spine. You want cradling for good support, but you don’t want to “bottom out” and pocket coils are an appropriate solution for this.

The high-density foam base layer is meant to provide support for the comfort layers, and it helps disperse heat from those top layers, which is important for a cooler sleep.

Durability

When you spend thousands of dollars on a mattress, you want to know that it’s going to last a long time. Generally speaking, you can expect a high-quality mattress to last you about a decade or so. While higher quality materials can offer durability and a longer lifespan, it’s also about the types of materials used.

TEMPUR-Pedic doesn’t use latex materials in its Flex series, so you shouldn’t expect your bed to last 20 years or longer. However, it does use tempered pocket coils and high-density foam for its bases, which are longer lasting than conventional materials used by budget mattress companies.

The most vulnerable layer for breaking down are the top comfort layers. Once again, latex foam is one of the most durable materials, but TEMPUR-Pedic’s high quality memory foam is long-lasting, as well. It’s difficult to know the exact density of the company’s secret foam blends, but you shouldn’t have any problems with foam breaking down in the first few years. With that said, you can expect your bed to become softer over time, so you may want to start with a mattress that’s firmer than you’d want in the beginning.

What are the Problems with TEMPUR-Pedic?

Frankly speaking, TEMPUR-Pedic is super secretive. You aren’t going to find the exact densities of the foam layers or even what those foam layers are made of. The lack of transparency can make some buyers suspicious. The reason for the cloak-and-dagger attitude from the company is to keep their process quiet so other companies won’t be able to mirror their mattresses. We do prefer companies that let us know the quality of their materials but it’s safe to say that Tempurpedic uses quality materials.
