What’s Different About TEMPUR-Pedic?

A mattress that is both comfortable and supportive may be difficult to find if you’re shopping in the proverbial bargain bin. TEMPUR-Pedic makes high-quality mattresses that combine a supportive core, cushy upper layers, and resiliency for that springy feel are going to be a bit costlier, but they’ll also be more durable so you can keep the same mattress for many years.

The Flex series offers foam that responds quickly to your movements, so when you lay down, it sort of hugs your body, but when you move, the foam bounces back quickly and adapts to your new position. So, what makes a TEMPUR-Flex bed different from all the others? You have to look inside for the answer.

Comfort

Above the core and response layers is a thick comfort layer of TEMPUR-ES material. This top layer is what determines the feel and softness or firmness of your bed. The viscoelastic material relieves pressure at the points you need it most, such as your shoulder and hip, if you sleep on your side.

This is the layer that absorbs movement, so when you or your partner move in the middle of the night, the other shouldn’t even notice it. When you lay down on a bed and you feel that sort of hugging sensation from the mattress, that’s the comfort layer. If you love that feeling, you want the softest of the series, which is the TEMPUR-Flex Elite. Prefer a firmer feel? Go with the TEMPUR-Flex Prima. None of these mattresses in this series are particularly firm, though.

Resiliency

In the center of each TEMPUR-Flex bed is a response layer made of TEMPUR-Response material, which is a version of the TEMPUR material that has a faster response. What this means is that you get that familiar bounce-back feel that you’re used to from an innerspring mattress, but it’s made of foam.

A mattress with quick response means you can easily get out of bed without feeling like you’re in quicksand. It also offers that bit of bounce that you don’t get from a regular memory foam mattress. Another reason this resiliency is important is because it makes it easier to move on the bed itself.

Without beating around the bush here, this response material means sex is less challenging than on a memory foam bed. You’ll be able to move more easily, whether you’re on the bed or getting out of bed.

Support

The core of a Flex mattress is where you’re going to get the support you need to help with spinal alignment. This is what’s going to prevent you from sinking down too far. In the TEMPUR-Flex series, you get a hybrid mattress that combines that proprietary TEMPUR material and individually-wrapped coils.

Between the dense memory foam at the bottom and all around the edge of your mattress and the tightly-packed innerspring pocket coils, your body will be supported through the whole night.

It’s the pocket coils that help the mattress conform to your body, which provides that alignment of your spine. You want cradling for good support, but you don’t want to “bottom out” and pocket coils are an appropriate solution for this.

The high-density foam base layer is meant to provide support for the comfort layers, and it helps disperse heat from those top layers, which is important for a cooler sleep.

Durability

When you spend thousands of dollars on a mattress, you want to know that it’s going to last a long time. Generally speaking, you can expect a high-quality mattress to last you about a decade or so. While higher quality materials can offer durability and a longer lifespan, it’s also about the types of materials used.

TEMPUR-Pedic doesn’t use latex materials in its Flex series, so you shouldn’t expect your bed to last 20 years or longer. However, it does use tempered pocket coils and high-density foam for its bases, which are longer lasting than conventional materials used by budget mattress companies.

The most vulnerable layer for breaking down are the top comfort layers. Once again, latex foam is one of the most durable materials, but TEMPUR-Pedic’s high quality memory foam is long-lasting, as well. It’s difficult to know the exact density of the company’s secret foam blends, but you shouldn’t have any problems with foam breaking down in the first few years. With that said, you can expect your bed to become softer over time, so you may want to start with a mattress that’s firmer than you’d want in the beginning.

What are the Problems with TEMPUR-Pedic?

Frankly speaking, TEMPUR-Pedic is super secretive. You aren’t going to find the exact densities of the foam layers or even what those foam layers are made of. The lack of transparency can make some buyers suspicious. The reason for the cloak-and-dagger attitude from the company is to keep their process quiet so other companies won’t be able to mirror their mattresses. We do prefer companies that let us know the quality of their materials but it’s safe to say that Tempurpedic uses quality materials.
