What is Supima Cotton?

Supima cotton is a type of long-stapled cotton. Long-stapled cotton has a longer fiber than most other cottons (measuring approximately 1.5 inches in length), providing a more durable, heavier material weave that feels smoother to the touch and allowing for a superior wear over time. It’s only grown in the United States and is sourced through licensed supply chains. To ensure authenticity, be sure to look for the supima label on products

Supima vs Regular Cotton Differences

The most common questions asked about supima cotton is how it differs from other, more common cottons. As mentioned, supima has a longer fiber than common cottons. Most cotton fibers average 1 inch in length compared to the 1.5 inches of supima. Although this may not seem like a large difference, it is significant in how it translates into a woven material.

Supima fibers provide a softer, heavier weave. It wears well over time, becoming even softer. It also doesn’t pill as easily as shorter fiber weaves and hold dye exceptionally well. Supima also only represents about 1% of the world’s cotton production, making it a quality, but more rare option in comparison.

Pima and PimaCott Cottons Explained

You may have also heard of Pima, and PimaCott cotton products as well. These are also long stapled cotton fibers, but a few differences exist – mainly surrounding where they’re grown. Pima is grown through South America, Australia, and parts of the United States. Although considered high quality, unfortunately it’s not closely controlled and is often blended in materials, making it difficult to determine how much percentage is actually used in a product.

PimaCott is highly controlled and grown only in California in the United States. It’s tracked through harvest and production to ensure it isn’t blended with another inferior cotton fiber, and is labeled to provide full transparency of its use.

Why Choose Supima Cotton?

Everything explained above helps highlight the quality of supima cotton. Although it may be more costly initially to purchase, it will last longer than other material choices, and provide a very comforting experience in the meantime.

If you’re looking for one of the most comforting sheet sets available, this cotton is well worth considering. Sleep cooler and more comfortably on thicker, more crisp, breathable quality cotton.

Thread Count Explained

Thread count (TC) is defined by how many woven threads fit into a square inch of material. The weave is defined by the vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) thread count added together. Most weaves can only handle a maximum thread count of 400, with some exceptions with the use of very fine threads, or longer stapled fibers.

This probably makes you wonder why or how a material can claim 600 thread count, or even 1000 thread count weaves. A 600 TC material may very well be created using longer stapled fibers from supima cottons, but those that reflect significantly higher TC most likely are not using a single-ply thread. Instead, these materials use a multi-ply thread which are thinner and weaker when used separately, but when woven together allow for a stronger material. This allows for companies to claim 800, 1000, or even sometimes 1200 TC, but this is actually no thicker or more durable than a single ply option, lower thread count product.

What to Consider When Purchasing Supima Cotton Sheets

The explanation of supima quality described above makes this material well worth considering as a sheet set. Quality woven materials last longer than materials woven with synthetics and shorter stapled fiber options. You may pay more initially for these sheets, but they will hold up to many washings and last much longer than less expensive options- which force you to replace them as they wear thin due to regular use.

You also will get a smoother, softer material that feels like a heavier, draping luxury product. Despite the heavier feel, these sheets sleep cooler and have excellent airflow for improved breathability. These are also hypoallergenic, and don’t provide a good environment for dust mites or other allergens to settle upon.

Conclusion

Supima cotton provides a high quality fiber that allows for a luxury product when woven into a bedding material. Whether used in a 100% weave or blended, the comfortable result is considered unparalleled by some. The above reviewed sheet sets are all considered some of the best based on consumer reviews. Each of our recommendations are durable and wash well, only getting softer over time.
