Zyppah Snoring Mouthpiece Video Review

Did you know that your tongue has an impact on snoring? In many cases, the tongue relaxes to the point that it blocks your airway. If you’ve tried snoring mouthpieces and haven’t found the solution you were expecting, there may be a solution in the Zyppah mouthpiece. During the course of this video, I’m excited to show you how it worked for my sleep partner and whether it could be a good fit for you.

How Snoring Works

People who snore often have too much soft tissue that’s more prone to vibrate in the tiny opening of the airway called the nasopharynx. Whether you have a large tongue, weak tongue muscles, or sleep on your back, the soft tissue can relax and block this airway.

My sleep partner has obstructive sleep apnea. Zyppa isn’t used to treat this problem, but we’re going to examine the effects it has on the associated snoring.

A Walk Through the Boil and Bite Process

Most products offer some type of customization capability. Zyppah uses the relatively common boil-and-bite method. This creates unique dental impressions that will help keep your device properly anchored and as comfortable as possible. Tools to have handy include:

  • Your Zyppah device
  • 2 quarts of water
  • Tongs
  • A timer
  • A small mirror
  • A towel
  • A microwave-safe container

Once you have all your materials, it only takes around 10 minutes to set your dental impressions. It can be narrowed down to a five-step process:

1. Bring your water to a boil and transfer it to your container.

2. Submerge your Zyppah in the water for 30 to 45 seconds. It will naturally try to float, so, you want to keep it under the water and from touching the sides or bottom of the container since it can stick.

3. When your timer goes off, remove the device by grabbing the tongue strap and letting it cool for around 10 seconds.

4. Create your impression by first pressing the product down onto your lower teeth with your fingers. Align the top of the appliance by moving your jaw forward and biting down. Hold this position for 60 seconds. (You can see here that we have a pretty good impression, which is important to ensure optimal performance. You can repeat the process three times before the Zyppah begins to lose structural integrity).

5. Once you get a good impression, set it by running it under cool water for 30 seconds.

Zyppah Feel

We’ve yet to come across a snoring mouthpiece that can really be described as comfortable when you first use it. The Zyppah includes a tongue strap, and it works to keep the tongue from becoming relaxed and blocking your airway.

During Michael’s first five nights of use, he reported struggling with a slight gag reflex as he adapted to having the device in place. This happens because your brain is trying to keep you alive, and it thinks an unchewed food is about to accidentally slip down your esophagus. You have to invest some waking hours in order to adapt.

Adaptation Period

Michael followed the tip on the instructions to wear the device an hour before bed. Now that he’s been using it for a couple weeks, he reports it feels much more natural. Drooling was also an initial problem that subsided. This is pretty standard with anti-snoring mouthpieces, and Zyppah is very transparent about the break-in period.

As the sleep partner, I got to enjoy snore-free nights every time he used it aside from a few occurrences of the device slipping out. This subsided once he got used to wearing it. The break-in period varies and can last anywhere from six days to six weeks.

Distinct, Unique Color

I like that Zyppah makes an attempt to help you stay stylish. Snoring mouthpieces definitely aren’t designed to make a fashion statement, but I like the colors of this product.

I have the green option, and it appears to be a very popular choice. You also have the following choices:

  • Beauty
  • Military
  • Ghost
  • Pink
  • USA

No Adjustment Capability

The Zyppah comes in one size, and it’s designed to fit 90% of mouths. The trouble that we ran into and that we’ve seen other customers mention is that the bottom of the mouthpiece can’t be manipulated. For some, it can be a little too far forward. You want to pull your lower jaw forward to keep the airway open, but not everyone needs the same degree of advancement.

If you have a small jaw, it may take you a little longer to get used to having the Zyppah in your mouth all night. I’d recommend looking into a product that allows for adjustments.

Mouthpiece and Tongue Retaining Device All in One

Zyppah’s unique in that it offers a mouthpiece and tongue retaining device all in one. Many mouthpieces tend to focus on the soft tissue vibration and overlook the contribution the tongue makes in snoring.

You’ll also notice the air hole in the front. This makes it possible to breathe through your mouth. If you decide to try the Zyppah for yourself, definitely give yourself the full six weeks to adapt to give the product a fair chance. Again, in my sleep partner’s case, it only took a period of around five to six days to break it in.

Simple Cleaning with Toothbrush & Toothpaste

The cleaning process is pretty simple. You can just use toothpaste and your toothbrush, and this makes it easy to fit into your routine. Zyppah does offer their anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-bacterial cleaning foam. It’s the only one of its kind, but it’s $18 for a one and a half fluid ounce can. If you have medical problems that make you more susceptible to illness, this could be a good investment.

Consistency is more important, though, and we found the toothpaste method more efficient in terms of not forgetting to wash after use. Some of the products we’ve tried have lots of crevices to clean, but the Zyppah is relatively smooth. Make sure you store it in a cool, dry place for best durability expectations and never use abrasive cleaning products like dishwasher soap or bleach to clean your Zyppah mouthpiece.

Not Our Top Pick for Lady Snorers

The Zyppah is most efficient when you can close your mouth while using it. For Michael, this wasn’t a problem. However, I had a hard time closing my mouth due to the bottom mandibular advancement.

The male chin protrudes further forward and their mandibles are typically larger than those of females. If you think this could be an issue, you may want to look for something that allows for customization in this area.

If you’re not sure if your jaw will be big enough, Zyppah does offer a very generous money-back guarantee. Keep reading to learn more.

Durability Expectations

When cared for properly, your Zyppah should last four to six months. Average durability is 12-24 months with six being a minimum, so I definitely think there’s work to be done in making this product last longer.

The tongue strap is awesome in that it addresses tongue-related snoring more directly, but it becomes loosened due to the constant pressure applied. You may want to experiment to see if you can stop your snoring without a focus on tongue stabilization before you buy.

90-Day Money-Back Guarantee

Zyppah offers a 90-day money-back guarantee. In the event you didn’t properly mold your device, they’ll provide a replacement for free. Otherwise, you get your money back, no questions asked.

Some products only offer a 30-day guarantee, and I don’t think this is enough time for some people to fully develop an adaptation, so Zyppah gives you more than enough time to determine the effectiveness of their product. They also offer a $20 coupon when re-ordering within six months of the original purchase date.

While you can use this product with bridgework and missing teeth, it’s not to be used with full dentures.

Cost

Overall, this product did a good job at ending snoring from the point of view of the sleep partner. Aside from initial jaw soreness, slight drooling, and a little bit of a gag reflex, Michael was able to adapt to use.

You can get your Zyppah for $99.95, and you do get three months to try it out before your purchase is final.

Zyppah Reviews & Feedback

Zyppah is made in the U.S., and it’s also accredited by the Better Business Bureau and FDA-approved. It was created by a thirty-years licensed dentist who is also a bioengineer. I think the sleek design and overall functionality is positive and conducive to end snoring if it fits right. Here’s what other real customers had to say about their experiences with this product:

Pros

  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Easy to clean
  • Incorporates measures to reduce/eliminate snoring from tongue relaxation
  • Allows for mouth breathing
  • Long trial period lets you get a good idea of whether it’s going to work

Cons

  • Can’t make adjustments to lower mandible protrusion
  • Hard to close your mouth, especially for females
  • Tongue strap falls off

Who We Recommend the Zyppah Mouthpiece for

If you are a male snorer who suffers from tongue-related snoring and needs something that allows for mouth breathing, I think this could be a good value. Considering durability expectations, I think this is a little steep compared to other products out there unless….

  • You’ve tried cheaper versions and found they just don’t work- this may indicate you need a stronger focus on tongue support.

It’s typically the tongue strap that malfunctions, so this could prove a small price to pay for a device that covers this problem.

Conclusion

I think Zyppah is a good fit for male snorers who need something they can use for mouth breathing. It’s also a great consideration for those who need extra tongue support to stop snoring.

If you have reason to believe your snoring is not the result of tongue relaxation, I think it’d be worth it to try out less expensive options first due to the fact that it seems to be the tongue strap that negatively impacts durability. In our case, and for someone who snores very loudly, Zyppah did work. Great fit for larger jaws and innovative solution for people who suffer from tongue-related snoring. With a 90-day guarantee, you really can’t go wrong.
