When it comes to finding the best mattress for your needs, you’re going to run across a lot of quality products. Since you can shop online, access to acquiring a new mattress without ever leaving home is literally at your fingertips. However, different mattress products have different features and benefits. While a memory foam product may be great for someone with back pain, it may not offer the springy bounce someone with mobility issues may be looking for. It’s all about personal needs and preferences.

If you’re in the market for a hybrid product that allows you to take advantage of customization, it’s my pleasure to introduce you to the Tuck mattress. When you order this product, you go through a customization process. During this time, there are a variety of questions that are asked including body temperature while sleeping, firmness preference, age, height, weight, and more. In doing so, they retrieve the information necessary to construct a mattress specific to your preferences.

Fresh Approach Toward the Online Mattress Industry

The mattress industry has been around for hundreds of years. Undoubtedly, there have been numerous innovations during this time, and new companies are often able to provide a fresh approach based on feedback provided by consumers just like you. Tuck introduced their product this June, and just a few areas they aim to improve include:

Access to customization for sleep partners

  • While there are other companies that allow you to answer questions to help get the construction right for sleep partners, you often have to pay more for a dual product. This means each sleep partner gets a side fit specifically for them for an added cost of a couple hundred dollars. Tuck allows consumers to choose between dual and blended products without any additional charge.

Customer satisfaction

  • I spoke with a customer service representative about the layer construction as I reviewed this product, and the conversation was informational and lighthearted. Their goal to incorporate humor into their business model is clearly displayed in their 145 day, 12 hour, and 53 second sleep trial.

Carbon footprint in their use of REPREVE in the cover

Inside the Tuck Mattress

Since Tuck is a hybrid product, you can expect to find a combination of different mattress materials. To understand how it works to offer comfort and support through its construction, let’s take a moment to look at the cover and each layer that lies beneath.

Tuck is the first mattress among both the online and brick and mortar business models to use REPREVE. This is a yarn consisting of recycled water bottles. Thirty-seven percent of the Tuck mattress cover is fabricated using REPREVE, which utilizes roughly 24 water bottles. The remainder of the cover consists of a mixture of rayon and polyester. The Tuck mattress does not utilize a fire sock for protection. Instead, it uses fire-resistant yarn woven into the back side of the cover.

Beneath the cover lies 4-6 separate layers depending on your customization results. No matter what formula your mattress utilizes, the combined unit will be 11 inches thick. In my case, we see a 1.5-inch top layer of memory foam. It takes two approaches in keeping you cool as copper is known for its many desirable properties in heat transfer. The gel infusion acts as backup support to absorb body heat and keep you cool. (Keep reading to see how Tuck performed in our thermal test). My memory foam layer is two inches thick, but yours could vary based on customization.

Moving on, we arrive next at the 1 inch microcoil system that are invidividually encased and help provide more response in the comfort layers. Then another 1.5 inches of continuous pour natural Dunlop latex. This layer also varies and is not included in all mattresses. It serves to provide added bounce and comfort in the upper levels. When you lay on this product, you can definitely feel the memory foam in the top layer, but it bounces back pretty quickly due to the latex and really helps you move around.

While not included in every mattress, you may find a microcoil system below the latex and memory foam. My mattress didn’t include the transition polyfoam layer that sometimes lies beneath the microcoils. However, all Tuck mattresses feature the six inch pocketed coil support system that works well with the latex in facilitating ease in movement. You can see how the coils are individually wrapped, and this helps minimize motion transfer, a plus for sleep partners. Finally, all mattresses feature a final inch of base polyfoam.

Sinkage and Firmness

When I answered my questionnaire, I indicated I like my mattress a little on the plusher end of the firmness spectrum. In my experience, medium products tend to sink about 6 ¾ inches. This product sinks in right about 6 inches. I was expecting it to be a little less firm. Based on this, if you like it plush, I’d answer with a level a little plusher than your preference when you come to this question during the customization process.

I’ll explain how that works. Indentation load deflection is a number that delineates firmness with 12 being very plush and 50 being very firm. In Tuck’s materials, the base polyfoam ranges from 41 to 52. Transition polyfoam weighs in at 22 to 38, the memory foam ranges from 5 to 15, and the latex will be anywhere from 6.5 to 15. Tuck mixes and matches these layers in a combination they feel best matches your needs and preferences.

How Does It Feel?

The question you really want to know the answer to is how this product feels. Again, the feel of your mattress will vary depending on your construction. When I push down on the unit, it responds really quickly, much unlike my old traditional memory foam mattress. I still get that contouring comfort from the memory foam, so I think this could be an excellent fit for you if you like the idea of memory foam but have always shied away from its most common cons.

How Memory Foam and Coils Work Together

While the components vary, all Tuck mattresses contain the memory foam and pocketed coil support system. Since it utilizes different material types, this makes it a hybrid product There are a couple of reasons why this may be appealing to you. To start, the memory foam and coils serve to complement one another in minimizing the downsides of each. The memory foam helps reduce motion transfer often associated with coils. The coils, in turn, help reduce the “sinking in” feeling common in memory foam that makes it hard to move. You can definitely pick up on this symbiotic relationship when you lay down. You may or may not have latex in your mattress, but I think it really helps to increase bounce and responsiveness.

Tuck Motion Isolation

If you sleep with a partner, you want to ensure motion transfer is minimal. Some people tend to associate innersprings with low motion isolation, but hybrid products are often able to help reduce transfer through the use of various materials. I think the memory foam and latex combination helps absorb a lot of motion transfer. My 10-year-old daughter slept with me for a couple nights on the Tuck mattress. When she would move around, I could feel it a little bit, but it wasn’t enough disturbance to cause significant disruption. In our video review, you can see how much movement occurs when she moves around versus when she jumped up and down next to me. Many of the traditional innerspring mattresses used continuous coil construction. The name implies exactly what this means as each row is made using a single curved wire. When pressure is applied on one side, it has an impact on the whole mattress. With the use of individually-wrapped coils, effect on the mattress is able to be better isolated to the point of impact. I think sleep partners should be just fine getting to sleep even if one or both tends to move around a lot.

Temperature Regulation: Will You Sleep Cool?

Nobody wants to wake up in a cold sweat, so let’s take a moment to look at Tuck’s ability to regulate a comfortable temperature. We saw how the memory foam incorporates gel beads and copper in attempt to keep you sleeping cool. Pocketed coils are also highly breathable, so let’s take a look at how well the mattress did at temperature regulation.

First, I laid on the mattress for 30 minutes in a room temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. It typically takes around 10 minutes to return to room temperature. In the case of the Tuck mattress, it took 8 minutes and 40 seconds. I also used a sleep tracking device to monitor the bed temperature through the night. My mattress was able to maintain an average temperature of 92 degrees Fahrenheit. This is lower than your body temperature and will help you sleep cooler. All data aside, I didn’t notice sleeping hot and was able to maintain a comfortable body temperature as I slept.

Tuck Durability Expectations

I’ve only been using my Tuck for about a week, so it’s not possible for me to give a firsthand account on durability. However, all it takes is a quick look at the densities to get a good idea of what you can expect. For starters, if your mattress features the latex layer, you can rest assured that this is one of the most durable materials in the industry. In memory foam, you don’t want anything lower than 3 pounds per cubic foot if you want the product to last. The closer you can get to the 4-5 pcf range, the better. In the case of Tuck, we find a pcf of 3.5, so this is pretty good. Both the base and transition polyfoams have a pcf of 1.8, and this is where you want to be in terms of durability in polyfoam.

In the coils, you want to look at the coil count to determine longevity. Bare minimum for a queen mattress is 400, but you want at least 800 if you want the product to last. The Tuck queen-sized mattress features 1,037 coils, so this is excellent. Overall, you’re getting high-quality materials for the price. Considering normal wear and tear, I’d say durability expectations are favorable. According to Tuck’s research, their product is expected to last 28% longer than a mattress made solely out of foam.

Edge Support

Edge support is more important than we often give it credit for. I know I sit on the edge quite frequently through the day and sleep there often. All-foam products often lack in this area, and this is a feature that innerspring products typically offer. You can see as I sit in various positions on the mattress that I don’t sink in very much. When I lay on the edge, it’s able to support me well. Aside from the edge support offered through the innerspring and microcoils, if you have them, Tuck also incorporates a slightly lower coil gauge around the edge for increased support in this more vulnerable area.

Maintenance, Protection, Care, and Warranty

I am very impressed with how Tuck recognized problems faced by consumers such as the added costs typically associated with dual products for sleep partners. Their customization process was quick and easy. If you have a sleep partner and want a product that offers bounce without the disturbance, I think Tuck could be an excellent fit. You’ll enjoy the mattress if you like memory foam but want to stay cool and maintain your mobility. If it’s starting to sound like Tuck could solve the primary sleep problems you face, let’s get an idea of what you can expect once you become a customer.

Sleep Trial

As with many sleep products, Tuck does allow you some time to adapt to the mattress and make a final decision whether or not it works for you long after it arrives at your doorstep. They offer a unique and humorous 145 day, 12 hour, and 53 second sleep trial. Tuck addresses returns on a case-by-case basis. They’ll work with the consumer to donate their Tuck mattress to an organization in need. If that is not possible, they’ll pick up the mattress to have it responsibly recycled.

Tuck Mattress Cost

I think Tuck has a great formula in determining the right fit for the sleeper. The firmness was a little higher than I expected based on my customization questionnaire. However, Tuck is still very new in the industry having just launched their product about three months ago. I feel they still have plenty of time to incorporate consumer feedback to make necessary changes to their formula to get this aspect a little closer to expectations.

The mattress was still very comfortable, and I love how the coils add that extra bounce to help you get out of bed a little more easily in the morning. I think they did a great job at keeping the mattress cool, and I also enjoy the design. I found the sporadic pattern to be unique and different than what I’m used to seeing. If you’re ready to purchase your Tuck mattress, let’s take a look at the cost you can expect:

  • Twin- $600
  • Twin XL- $725
  • Full- $850
  • Queen- $990
  • King- $1,200
  • California King- $1,200

Tuck Reviews and Feedback

Tuck does pride themselves in thinking outside the box, and I find their business model to be light-hearted and humorous. I’m also impressed with the fact that there is no weight limit on this mattress, so I think it could be a good fit for heavier people who struggle to find a mattress that offers them viable comfort and support. Tuck works to help get returned mattresses in the bedrooms of people who really need them. I think this could be a great fit for you if:

  • You want a mattress that’s effective in accommodating both you and your sleep partner.
  • You want a mattress that stays cooler than your average sleep product.
  • You want to do your part in keeping your carbon footprint low.
  • You want a product with the bounce of innerspring with the comfort of memory foam.

Overall, the Tuck mattress is a quality product at a price most can afford, especially given their financing options. We all have our own opinions, however, so let’s take a moment to see what other consumers have had to say about this new-to-the-industry product.

  • Customization available for each sleep partner at no extra charge
  • Motion isolation high for an innerspring product
  • Great customer service
