About Awara

Organic seems to be all the rage these days, and it doesn’t stop at the grocery store. Since 2018, Awara has been providing their customers a 13-inch organic hybrid mattress that sources natural materials including latex and a cotton-wool blend intended to keep our planet vibrant for future generations. As well, it’s worth noting that these mattresses are 100% made in the U.S.

They’ve teamed up with ClimatePartner, an organization that plants a tree for every Awara mattress sold. If off-gassing bugs you, Awara is VOC free, so you won’t experience the smell you do with memory foam.

Hybrid products like Awara typically do a pretty good job combining contour and bounce without compromising on breathability, so I’m excited to share with you the results of my testing of this product. Let’s dive right in with a look at the layer lineup.

Awara Mattress Layer Lineup

You can’t judge a book by its cover, so let’s take a look inside the Awara mattress. Since the cover isn’t removable, we’ve left it on, but the two-layer lineup is pretty easy to visualize.

The Cover

It all kicks off with the organic cotton and wool Euro top cover that adds extra cushioning without compromising on firm support. This helps make things more comfortable for all

three sleeping positions. The wool and cotton are both great materials for breathability, and both are GOTS certified. This is one of the most difficult certifications to achieve and requires mattress companies to meet certain ecological and social criteria.

I like that this blend provides an all-natural fire barrier, and Awara doesn’t add any synthetics to their wool, so it’s 100% natural.

The Comfort Zone

Beneath the cover is the comfort zone consisting of one four-inch layer of certified organic latex. It’s clear of any toxic material and sourced from tree-tapped and sustainable sources. There are two types of latex:

• Talalay employs additional processes to keep heat buildup minimal, but this involves extra steps that can pose stress on the environment.
• Awara uses Dunlop latex. It’s easier on the environment and the budget, and we’ll be testing heat transfer here in a few minutes to make sure it’ll be a good fit.

The Support Zone

The layer lineup ends with a nine-inch, individually-wrapped coil unit. It works to provide excellent spinal alignment and full-body support. If you like a lot of bounce, I think you’ll be a big fan of the combination of coils with bouncy latex, and we demonstrate its ability to keep motion transfer low in the video above.

The coils incorporate five zones of slightly varied firmness levels, and this considers the fact that weight isn’t dispersed evenly throughout the body. This means heavier areas like the hips and shoulders are better supported.

Feel & Performance

It can be hard to imagine the feel of a mattress without lying on it, so I’ll try to help you out with that. I think the zoning does a good job with all three sleeping positions. However, if you really prefer side sleeping, you may want to add a topper for increased contour.

Latex is well known to keep the spine aligned, and I love the bounce you get with this particular layer lineup. If you have trouble moving around or getting in and out of bed, I highly recommend the Awara mattress. For those of you who have tried memory foam and like its contour but not its sinkage, I think you may prefer the feel of latex. In that case, Awara could be a great fit.

Awara Mattress Firmness & Contour

Awara rates this product as a 6.5 on the firmness scale with 10 being the firmest. This firmness is pretty accommodating for the average customer, but not everyone is the average customer. If you don’t carry much weight, it may be too firm.

Using my firmness and contour testing tool, I gathered the information you need to make a more personalized decision. In terms of firmness, you can see Awara is firmer than most I’ve tried out using this method. Out of every four mattresses I’ve tested, it’s firmer than three, so I think that’s pretty well-aligned with how it’s advertised.

This firmness level is excellent for people who carry a lot of weight. In terms of contour, we look at the difference made when I place weights in the amount of 25, 50, and 75 pounds on our testing tool to see how different areas of the body will sink into the material. You can see, the more weight we add, the fewer compression results, and this is because the heavier weights are reacting more with the innerspring unit.

These results typically indicate a good fit for women with pear or apple body shapes and men with triangle, rhomboid, or inverted triangle body types.

Motion Transfer Reduction

If you have a sleep partner, motion isolation is incredibly important. Undisturbed rest is a critical component in proper rejuvenation, and that’s impossible when your partner’s every move wakes you up. With Awara, you have three features that are compatible with low motion transfer:

• Spring units have a bad reputation for excessive motion transfer, but Awara’s coils are individually wrapped. This means forces on one part of the mattress don’t transfer across the mattress as easily as they do on continuous coil units.
• The bouncy latex may also lead you to believe motion transfer is high, but the opposite is true as latex typically does very well at absorbing motion.
• Reinforced edging keeps motion transfer low

Considering the many efforts made to keep motion transfer low, you’ve got a very stable mattress that I’d recommend for sleep partners who prefer a firm sleep surface with lots of bounce.

Heat Transfer Reduction

We talked about the compromise made in Dunlop latex when it comes to heat transfer, so let’s talk about how Awara performs. I think the fact that 70% of this product consists of a breathable spring unit will help as will the cotton wool blend we find in the cover.

To test it out, I lied on my Awara mattress for a half-hour so I could monitor the cooldown process using my thermal imaging camera. I was pretty surprised when it only took around five minutes. This is half the average time, so I think Awara is a great fit for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

It can be easy during mattress shopping to get so focused on how it feels to lie on a mattress that you overlook edge support. This term represents how well your mattress holds up when you sit or lie on the edge, and it makes a big difference for people who sleep near the edge or sit on it often.

When you lack edge support, it can make it hard to move, so this is pretty important to analyze if you have mobility problems. Fortunately, Awara has several things going for it:

• It’s firm.
• The nine-inch coil unit is naturally very supportive.
• Although you can’t see it, inside the mattress is reinforced edging that helps evenly distribute weight and keep you from sinking on the edge.

In a nutshell, Awara passes our edge support examination with flying colors.

Durability Expectations

Before we start wrapping up, let’s take a few minutes to talk about Awara’s durability expectations. Natural products, in general, do tend to last longer than synthetic, and latex is one of the most durable products on the market, so I’m not concerned with the first four inches. This is where the most wear and tear takes place, so that’s good.

My Durability Concern

Where I started to get concerned was with the coil count. This is what indicates good durability in an innerspring unit, and, for a queen, you want at least 800. Most products I’ve tried to have around 1,000. Awara doesn’t list the coil count, so this raised a red flag.

I felt each coil along both the width and length of this mattress to figure up the coil count for myself. There were 24 across the top and 32 along the side, so these figures up to a total count of 768.

For the price, I’d really like to see this number higher. I was also concerned when I used the handle to move my mattress. I could hear a tearing sound, and you can see the slight fraying already developing along the seams.

Awara has only been on the market since last year, so hopefully, these issues will be fixed, but they certainly cause for concern. However, I do feel really good about the use of latex and natural materials.

Maintenance, Protection, Care & Warranty

While I think the price is high for the coil count, Awara does offer a Forever Warranty. If your support starts to wear out, you may be able to take advantage of the warranty, but it’s critical you take proper care of your mattress. I’ve talked to people who were denied warranty claims on other products for things like stains on the cover, so you have to be careful.

I always suggest buying a mattress protector to prevent this from happening to you. I think, if you use the mattress as directed and take care of it, the impressive warranty takes the sting out of the low coil count. 

Setup

It’s best to place your Awara mattress on a suitable frame or box spring. You don’t have to make a huge investment. As long as you get it off the floor, it reduces the chances of developing mold. This will also provide maximum durability and breathability.

Cost

Within 24 hours of purchase, your mattress should ship, and it takes around 2-5 business days for it to arrive. You do have the option for white glove delivery for a small extra fee, and this can be a great option if you don’t have anyone around to help you unbox. Latex products can be difficult to maneuver. If you do choose this option, shipping times could be a little longer.

Our Final Verdict

I really love the use of natural materials, and I think the incorporation of zoning really goes a long way in keeping you adequately supported across the entire sleep surface. Most mattress companies offer a 10-year warranty, so I think the Forever Warranty offered by Awara is very bold and offers you great protection. You also get a full 365 nights to try it out before your purchase is final, so this gives you more than enough time to break it in and make sure you like it before you’re committed.
