Construction

Cover

Natural Escape is primarily a rubber-based spring mattress. Holding true to its promise of natural comfort, the cover is woven out of a blend of organic cotton and wool, harvested from southern Oregon and West Coast regions of Northern California.

First Layer

Three inches of 100% Natural Dunlop Latex constitutes the first layer. With an ILD rating ranging between 18 – 22, a medium level of firmness is maintained, sitting well with most individuals. Latex’s inherent features give the mattress its characteristic bounce and push upon application of load. This is preferred by individuals who are suspicious of the enveloping effect of memory foam mattresses. Being firm, the layer is also a good choice for persons who carry a lot of weight as they wouldn’t have to worry about sinking into the mattress to uncomfortable depths.

Second Layer

My Green Mattress’ signature pocketed coil innerspring unit makes up this layer. The innerspring unit is 8 inches high, with each coil floating independently. This means the response of each coil isn’t influenced by the amount of pressure applied on adjacent coils, resulting in maximum motion isolation and stability.

Firmness and Feel

Comfort and Support

The primary source of comfort is the Dunlop Latex layer of the mattress. Firmness is maintained to a medium firm level, helping accommodate sleepers of varying weights. This is supplemented by the innerspring system of the mattress that is divided into three zones, i.e. shoulders, back, and hips. As you move from the shoulder- to the hip-end, the coil gauge varies too from, 15.5-14.5-15.5. This ensures that each major pressure point gets the right amount of firmness, maintaining spinal alignment throughout the night. A mattress is a good option for people who prefer a stiffer response than a plush one.

Edge Support

The Natural Escape offers excellent edge support, ensuring that every inch of the mattress is equally usable. You may want to watch TV, read a book or simply share your mattress, all of which requires a mattress with a steady edge. The ‘falling over’ feeling is quite irritating and becomes more profound if you plan on sharing your mattress. This mattress, however, deals with it well, partly due to the characteristic bounciness of Latex and because of the independent movement of the innerspring unit. As a result, you get to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, whether it’s for personal activities, sharing, etc.

Cooling

Apart from the sleep industry, Latex is commonly used as a coolant due to its inherent excellent thermal regulation properties. As it makes up the mattress’ top layer, excessive heat is transferred to the lower layer of the mattress from where the aerated nature of the innerspring unit dissipates it further away from the body. This keeps the mattress’ surface temperature to a cool and comfortable level, preventing any episodes of intermittent sweating throughout the night.

Motion Transfer

My Green Mattress has used one of the most advanced innerspring coil systems available. The isolated nature of the coils allows motion transfer to be kept to a minimum. Furthermore, thanks to the three-zoned design, the body’s spine is kept aligned eliminating the subconscious need for changing positions in the search for the most comfortable position.

Unique Features

Greenguard Gold Certified

The Natural Escape proudly holds the Greenguard Gold Certified stamp, ensuring that you and your family will be kept away from harmful chemicals and adhesives. Being one of the 1% of the contenders who pass this test, the mattress is a viable choice for people who prefer a chemical-free product over ones that may have harmful effects.

Natural Latex Rubber

The mattress’ top layer is made from 100% Natural Dunlop Latex Rubber, harvested from sustainable sources. The material is responsible for the stiff response as well as the mattress’ bounciness, which is the preference for several individuals. Furthermore, being a natural coolant, latex rubber is responsible for taking heat away from the body, transporting it into lower layers from where it can be dissipated.

Zoned Spring System

Disturbance or movement in one part of the mattress doesn’t spread horizontally thanks to the independent nature of the coils. On top of this, the system is split into three strategic zones with varying firmness, meaning each major pressure point gets maximum pressure relief. The pelvic area has a softer while the shoulder and lumbar area have a much firmer response.

Edge Support

The bounciness of Latex Rubber combined with the advanced innerspring system results in excellent edge support, making the mattress a suitable choice for individuals planning to share their bed.

Durability

Latex itself is an extremely durable material. Being used in the top-most layer of the mattress, it is responsible for absorbing the onset of loads and any sudden impacts, shielding the layers below. This prolongs the mattress’ lifespan and prevents it from undergoing permanent deformation, effectively safeguarding your investment.

Layla Breakdown

Compared to My Green Mattress, Layla is an all-foam mattress, sporting layers of memory and support foam. However, the manufacturer’s use of copper-infused memory foam makes it different from average mattresses, alleviating the cons and amplifying the pros.

Construction

Cover

The mattress has a thermoGEL cover made from the following materials:

  • 66% polyester
  • 30% viscose
  • 4% lycra

The cover generates a cotton-silk feeling upon touch. Being breathable, it helps reduce heat build-ups, while also being removable for cleaning purposes. The cover tries to emulate the properties of natural materials and fares well, but this doesn’t change the fact that the materials are synthetic in nature.

Layla-Mattress-cover.jpg

Comfort Layer

The layer resides beneath the thermoGEL cover, sporting 3 inches of copper-infused gel memory foam. The foam has a response similar to that of any other memory foam mattress, adjusting according to the body’s contours. Moreover, the layer provides deep compression support neutralizing the issue of over-plushness, preventing the body from the getting trapped into the mattress.

The infusion of copper doesn’t affect the layer’s response, but it does help solve the long-standing issue of poor thermal regulation when it comes to memory foam mattresses. Copper, a conductor, aids in the transfer of heat from the top of the mattress to the layers below, preventing excessive heat build ups as the night progresses.

layla-mattress-new-layers.jpg

Support Layer

This is the mattress’ core and is primarily responsible for keeping the body aligned throughout the night. The layer is made up of 2 inches of 30 ILD convoluted support foam. The foam has a shape similar to that of egg cartons, and thus, has abundant space between each pocket, promoting airflow and transporting heat further away from the body. The sharp increase in the ILD rating means the layer serves as a barricade to the body’s contours, keeping it from entrapment.

The layer is followed by 4 ½ inches of base support foam with ILD rating of 36, complimenting the convoluted support foam and providing firm support to the body for proper spinal alignment.

Final Layer

1 inch of copper-infused memory foam with similar ILD rating as the first layer forms this layer. The purpose of this layer is to give the mattress dual firmness levels. By flipping the mattress, you get a product that offers greater conformity than plushness, a more suitable option for obese individuals or for people who simply like to mix their sleeping preferences.

Firmness and Feel

As stated earlier, the mattress’ flip-able design gives it two levels of firmness. When placed in normal orientation, the mattress is plusher while in reverse orientation it generates a conforming response.

Normal Orientation

Signature memory foam response featuring plushness adjusting according to the body’s contours is generated by the top layer. Subsequently, the sharp increase in Layla’s ILD rating as you move downwards gives it the ability to generate more resistance. The final layer of base support foam (ILD 36) acts as a final barrier, preventing the body from over-enveloping, even for heavier individuals. To quantify the effects of various layers of this mattress, expect to sink 7 ½ inches into the mattress with this orientation.

Firm-Side-Layla-Mattress.jpg

In retrospect, Natural Escape’s top layer is composed of latex rubber, thus resulting in conformity rather than enveloping. This is followed by a layer of the innerspring unit, whose firmness changes to suit the body’s pressure points. The combined response, however, is one that pushes against your body, rather than one that allows your body to sink in.

Reversed Orientation

When flipped, your body is exposed to the 1-inch layer of memory foam, directly followed by the base support foam with an ILD rating of 36. This means that while you get a certain degree of plushness, it is generally overtaken by the firm response of the layers below, limiting how deep your body will go into the mattress. Also, note that this side isn’t exclusive to obese individuals; as some people may prefer sleeping on a firmer surface on any given day to gain comfort through conformity.

When the mattress is placed in this orientation, expect to sink 5 ½ inches.

Edge Support

Due to the mattress’ all-foam nature and memory-foam build, it doesn’t offer a high level of edge support. As you move towards the sides of the mattress, you may get the falling-off feeling. If you would prefer a mattress that allows you to utilize all extents of the mattress, then My Green Mattress is the way to go.

new-layla-mattress-edge-support.jpg

Cooling

Memory foam mattresses hold a poor reputation in the sleep industry when it comes to thermal regulation. Layla tackles this issue by infusing the memory foam layer with copper, through which heat can be conducted to the lower layers. Next, a layer of convoluted foam is placed to give the heat a breathable passageway, allowing it to be moved further away from the body. All this is supplemented by the thermoGEL cover that also works to promote breathability and thermal regulation.

layla-mattress-lifetime-warranty.jpg

However, due to the presence of rubber latex and aerated spring base, the Natural Escape’s thermal regulation capabilities are much better compared to Layla’s.

Motion Transfer

The presence of memory foam helps keep motion disturbances to a minimum, keeping them from moving sideways. Since the normal orientation exposes the body to a thicker layer of memory foam, it offers greater motion isolation compared to the reverse orientation.

Unique Features

Cheap

Layla is more affordable than the Natural Escape, with the price tag going further down with our coupon. For a decent price, you get a mattress that offers you dual levels of firmness, featuring the classic response of memory foam and firm support of convoluted foam.

expensive-to-not-so-pricetag.jpg

Plush Memory Foam Response

I stated earlier that several individuals prefer comfort through conformity. Similarly, there are people who prefer mattresses that would adjust according to the contours of their body and give them relief through plushness. The mattress does a good job in preserving the classic hug of memory foams, but at the same time keeps the contours from sinking too deep by placing support foams of increased ILDs. This makes the mattress a good choice for people who desire plushness but don’t want to find themselves trapped into the mattress in the middle of the night.

layla-mattress-soft-side-1.jpg

Copper Infused Memory Foam

Memory foams are poor at heat regulation, period. To counter this issue, Layla uses memory foams that have been infused with copper, allowing the conductive element to take heat away from the body to the layers below.

Dual Firmness

The manufacturer has used clever design to incorporate two levels of firmness within an affordable product. The normal orientation gives you more hug, viable for side sleepers while when flipped over, you get a firmer response more suitable for stomach sleepers. In comparison, My Green Mattress is offered in one firmness level and has no design flexibility that allows it to be flipped over.

Extended Trial Period

Layla offers a bit extended trial period compared to the Natural Escape, giving you enough time to work through the two firmness levels and decide whether the mattress is for you or not.

Lifetime warranty

While My Green Mattress offers only 10 years of warranty, Layla reassures its customers regarding the quality of its product through its lifetime warranty tag.

Which One to Get?

My Green Mattress

My-Green-Mattress-Natural-Escape-featured-image.jpgClick for price

Here are some reasons to consider the Natural Escape:

You want a bouncy mattress: The Natural Escape’s top layer is composed of latex rubber that gives it a firm, bouncy response, preventing the body from getting trapped. The push-response generated by the mattress is sought after by some individuals who find it more relaxing than the hug of a memory foam mattress.

You want zoned transition: The innerspring unit used by Natural Escape is split into three zones, each targeting a major pressure point of the body. This allows each part to be exposed to optimum levels of firmness and assures spinal alignment.

You are wary of synthetic products:In addition to passing the stringent Greenguard Gold Certification, the Natural Escape has also been accredited by other organizations earning it certifications such as GOTS Organics, Oeko-Tex, GOLS, etc. This shows the level of importance the company places upon exclusion of harmful agents within their mattress.

You want a Cooler Mattress: A cooler mattress means a more comfortable sleep. Heat is transported away from the body thanks to the rubber latex layer, shifting to the aerated innerspring system from where it gets dissipated into the surroundings. This keeps the temperature of the mattress maintained to a cool and comfortable level.

You want more edge support: Independently floating coils within the innerspring system is responsible for ensuring that movement on one part of the mattress doesn’t affect other areas. This technology extends to all corners of the mattress, preventing a slope from forming as you move towards the edge.

You want greater durability: The brunt of the body’s impacts is absorbed by the inherently durable Latex Rubber Layer, preventing them from having adverse effects on the innerspring unit underneath. This helps prolong the mattress’ lifespan and keeps your investment secure for years to come.

Layla

layla-mattress-table-image.jpgClick for price

You want a cheaper mattress: Layla is less expensive compared to the Natural Escape, giving you the flexibility of two firmness levels along with signature viscoelastic feel.

You want a memory foam plushness: The hug and contours generated by a memory foam mattress are highly comforting and preferred by several sleepers. The Layla does a great job at enunciating the viscoelastic feel of memory foam layer while ensuring that you don’t get trapped into the mattress through high ILD base layers. This makes the mattress a good choice for people looking to experience the plush response of memory foam mattresses, minus the discomfort of entrapment.

You want dual firmness: The unique design of the mattress gives it two distinct levels of firmness; plusher when placed normally, and firm when flipped over. Both orientations result in different depths of sinkage, with the former being more suitable for obese individuals or people who want a memory foam mattress with a firmer response. Whatever the reason might be, the mattress gives you the flexibility to choose between two levels of firmness to sleep on.

You want a longer warranty: Assurances regarding the durability of a certain constituent material may not be enough for some people to trust a product’s lifespan. In such cases, the tag of “lifetime warranty” works perfectly, something featured by Layla. This gives you peace of mind, and a chance to get a replacement if anything does go wrong in the decades to come.

You want a longer trial period: The mattress has two firmness levels and a plush response which for some might be an entirely new experience. Therefore, the availability of enough testing time is necessary to make the decision. Layla mattresses come with a 120-day trial period, enough to get used to the mattress’ response before coming to a decisive conclusion.
