Nothing is more important to a parent than the safety and wellbeing of their child. When I lay my son in his crib, I check on him multiple times until I go to sleep. Even then, I wake up in the middle of the night to make sure he is okay. One manufacturer that keeps the safety of your child in mind is Safety 1st. I had the opportunity to test out the Peaceful Lullabies crib mattress and run a bunch of safety and comfort tests. What are we waiting for? Let’s check out how it did!

The Safety 1st Promise

Safety 1st is a huge contributor to your child’s safety. They are constantly coming up with new innovative ways to keep your home & car baby proofed. Their baby gates are a huge hit in my house. My son gets into everything and these gates work the best with the layout of my home. He can no longer get in the kitchen to eat the dog food and play in the dog water.

This company has been spreading awareness for child safety for many years, even with their first ever creation, the “BABY ON BOARD” sign. These signs were created so that first responders or anyone helping on the scene of an accident knows to look for a child in the car.

Safety 1st promises to help keep your home and car safe with their products, which includes these crib mattresses. They are made with your child’s health and safety in mind.

Presenting The Safety 1st Peaceful Lullabies Crib Mattress

Before we get into the tests, I want to give you a little bit of background on mattress. The Peaceful Lullabies is one of many different crib mattresses that Safety 1st offers. It holds a Greenguard gold certification, which means that the materials inside of the mattress have low chemical emissions that help improve the quality in the air where the product is used.

The removable cover allows for easy cleaning. All you have to do is take it off and throw it in the washer. I was able to do this more than once without it shrinking or loosening. Once the cover is off, the natural cotton and wool fibers are exposed.

This thermo bonded fiber core provides your baby with the firm support they need for a restful night of sleep. This support is necessary for their growth and development.

Thoughts About The Packaging

As with all of the other Safety 1st mattresses I have tested, this one came in that plain brown box and was covered in plastic on the inside. It came with an insert that told me all of the features it has. This information is very valuable in my opinion because you have all of the facts right there in front of you rather than having to get on the internet to find it.

Features & Benefits

The features & benefits section is where I get into detail about all of the tests I was able to perform. I have done heat tests, water resistance tests, bounce, two-finger, and more.

What Sets It Apart?

I am a huge supporter of buying products from a company that keeps the safety of my child in mind. Why wouldn’t I want to buy a mattress from a company that also makes some of the products that keep my son away from my floor cleaner and dish detergent?

Safety 1st has always been in my home and will continue to be until I no longer need them. They have put so much time and energy into creating these products that keep my children safe in my home and car. Honestly, this is what sets them apart from other companies, they’re a family name that I can trust.

Construction & Composition

As with the rest of the Safety 1st mattresses, this one has two simple layers:

The washable cover is probable one of my favorite parts of this mattress. Although it can be quite a pain to take off, once it’s off, it washes nicely. I stuck it in the washer and dryer on a delicate cycle and it was able to maintain shape and durability.

The cover is Rayon made from bamboo and is free from phthalates and lead. It also has a PVC-free surface.

The filling is a thermo bonded natural wool and cotton blend. The wool helps to wick away moisture which keeps your child sleeping at a comfortable temperature. The high density composition also gives your baby the support they need for proper development. Not to mention, it lowers the SIDS risk.

Comfort

My son really liked this mattress. He would fall asleep a lot quicker and stay asleep through the night while he was on it, even when he wasn’t feeling well. I believe a lot had to do with the fact that the cover is soft and with his mattress cover on it, it made it even softer. There were times when I had him sleep on it without the cover and he slept just as well.

Although this isn’t a dual sided mattress, it is still supportive enough for babies while being equally comfortable for toddlers. It’ll last throughout the baby and toddler years without losing shape or durability.

Overall, it seems to be a quite comfortable mattress. As I said before, my son had no issues sleeping on it. He usually tosses and turns when he is on an uncomfortable mattress, but I didn’t witness him doing this.

Support

The overall support of the mattress is ideal for a child, whether it be for a infant or toddler. There was very little sinking and it held his body weight without an issue. He’s quite the plump little child, so some of the mattresses he use to sleep on sunk a little bit, but not this one.

The reason support is so important is because once your baby starts hitting their milestones, they will do some of it while they are in their crib. If the mattress is soft and squishy, how are they going to stand up and balance without falling? The firm surface allows them to roll, and get on their hands and knees in preparation for crawling. Once it comes time for them to start walking, they’ll need a firm surface to stand on while they’re in their crib.

The Two Finger Test

The two-finger test is very popular with pediatricians and scientists. They use this test to ensure that the mattress isn’t too small for the crib. Not all mattresses are meant for all cribs, although most of them are made to work with standard U.S. crib specifications. If the space is too large, or more than two fingers wide, it’s an entrapment risk. If your child is small enough to roll over and get wedged without being able to get out, it could turn out to be a SIDS case, and we don’t want that. This is why I perform the two-finger test.

I take my middle and pointer finger and stick it in the space between the crib and mattress. If I can fit more than two fingers inside of there without forcing it, it’s too small for the crib. With this mattress, I barely fit two fingers in it, which means it has a nice, snug fit. There is no risk for entrapment.

Edge Support

Edge support can play a factor in that entrapment risk I was talking above. If there is a lack in support at the edge of the mattress, it could aid in the child’s entrapment. If they get too close, the edge can give out, allowing them to easily fall into that-already too large-space between the mattress and crib.

This mattress has great edge support. I was able to balance a bowling ball on the edge of it for quite a while without it giving away to the weight of 16 pounds. This is also ideal for toddlers who are transitioning to a toddler bed. There is a solid edge that won’t suck them off of the bed if they get too close.

Corners

I know, I know, i’m the crazy lady that takes the corner type into consideration. Yes, this is true, but for a good reason which all ties into that two-finger test. Square corners seem to fit better in the crib than rounded ones. With the square corners, which this mattress has, there is little space between the corner of the crib and the mattress, allowing no movement. With rounded corners, if the mattress is too small for the crib, it allows the mattress to move around even more than it should.

Since this one has square corners, it had a great fit in the crib and there was no movement. Also, the corner are smooth, since it’s cloth fabric, and not pointy if it was made with vinyl or another plastic-like material.

Water Resistance Test

Seams

My son loves to play with anything that moves or grabs his attention. When he’s in his crib, he’s constantly looking for something to pull on, including loose thread from his blankets. This is one reason why I inspect all of the mattresses seams and stitches. I want to make sure there is nothing that could come loose in the washer or something that my son could easily get his hands on.

During my investigation, I was unable to see anything out of the ordinary. The zipper was solid, seams were stitched tightly, no loose threads, and no pulls in the fabric. Even after washing it twice, nothing came loose.

Ease Of Transport

The Peaceful Lullabies is very easy to carry around. I was able to take it out of the crib for washing and sheet changes. It weighs around 10 pounds, i’ve gotten conflicting reports on weight, but it’s still easier to carry around than an innerspring crib mattress.

In my video, I show how I can pick it up with just two fingers. Obviously you won’t be doing this every time you need to change a sheet, but it was just to show how lightweight it really was. I’m not a huge fan of carrying a heavy mattress around my bedroom, especially at 2am. This is why I love lightweight mattresses.

How Does It Feel?

Honestly, it’s soft and I would sleep on it. It has a plush feel with raised designs. Also, it seems to get softer with every wash. My son slept on this a few times without the sheet and it didn’t change the way he slept. He actually seemed to like it more I think.

Even though it’s soft, it doesn’t take away from the water resistance. Some would think that because it has a cotton feel, that it would soak up water, nope! The water stayed right on the top of the cover without soaking in. I’m not sure if the same can be said for a huge accident, but it seemed to hold up well with a small amount of water on it.

Bounce

My bounce test is a reflection of how firm a mattress is. If the bowling ball bounces too much, it’s probably too firm. It’s like throwing a plastic ball on a hardwood floor, it’ll bounce until it’s done, whereas if it’s too soft, it’ll sink in and not bounce at all, which isn’t good.

This mattress had a good bounce to it, not too much and not too little, just right. It bounced a few times and stopped. This means that the mattress has an ideal amount of firmness and support to it.

Check out my video and see for yourself.

Temperature Regulation Features

The inside of the Peaceful Lullabies has cotton and wool blended fibers. The wool is naturally moisture deterring, which helps to keep your child’s body temperature regulated. This is one of the only Safety 1st mattresses that has some type of heat regulating feature to it, which I love.

My son sleeps very warm, and with this mattress, he seemed to have a steady body temperature through the night, no matter how cool or warm it was in the bedroom. To me, this proved that the inside of the mattress was helping his body temperature stay steady, but can the heat retention test say anything otherwise? Let’s check it out.

Heat Retention

So, does the mattress hold heat and is my son keeping himself cool somehow? Or does the mattress actually cool down properly to not make my son overheat? Here’s how I found out what really goes on.

I took my rice sock and heated it up. I then took my heat gun and lined it up with the warm spot I created on the mattress. I then timed how long it would take for that spot to cool down from 130 degrees to around 98 degrees. The result? It took about 28 seconds. This isn’t terrible, but it also isn’t the quickest. On average, the mattresses take between 20-25 seconds, this one was 3 seconds over.

The mattress does hold heat, but not too much. I have tested mattresses that took almost one minute to cool off, so this one is doing pretty well, especially for having a soft rayon cover. Honestly, I think part of the reason that the mattress held that much heat for that long was because of that bamboo cover.

It seems that mattresses with covers like that hold the heat more than mattresses that have a vinyl cover, although not always true. This is just an observation I have made with the past few mattresses.

Odor

This’ll be short, sweet, and to the point. There was no smell to the mattress. This means that there really aren’t any chemicals in the mattress to make it smell like a radioactive plant.

Is the Safety 1st Peaceful Lullabies Crib Mattress The Right Fit For Your Baby/Toddler?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, it may be right for your child.

Do You Want Something That’s Easily Washable?

As I said above, the cover can be thrown in the washer and the dryer for easy washing. It’s kind of tough to take the cover off, but once it’s clean, it’ll all be worth it. Nothing’s better than knowing that you child is sleeping on a clean and hygienic surface.

Not Looking To Spend A Ton?

Crib mattresses can be expensive, especially if they come with all of the bells and whistles. This one is around the $100 mark (as of September 26 2016) and has more than enough features to ensure a comfortable, safe, and supportive sleeping surface for your child.

Looking For An Upgrade?

If you are looking for a mattress that can be easily transferred to a toddler bed, this is it. You don’t have to worry about looking for a regular mattress for your toddler just yet. This crib mattress works perfectly fine as a toddler one. My son is 2 with the body weight of a 3 year old and it support him just as well as an infant.

Need A Warranty?

Some crib mattresses only come with a 1 year warranty and some don’t come with one at all. If you think that you are going to need to use that warranty, then this one, which has a 2 year warranty, is ideal.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a crib mattress that is affordable and safe, the Overall, this is a pretty fantastic mattress. It does everything that a crib mattress should. It’s supportive enough for both infant and toddlers, it has great edge support, there was no smell, and it’s affordable. If you want something that is pretty basic, but also safe, then this is it. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for an affordable mattress that can be washed and used in a toddler bed. I am probably going to continue to allow my child to sleep on it, even after I am done with the other ones.
