Saatva vs Amerisleep - Which Mattress Is The Better One For Your Bed?

Saatva and Amerisleep are two of the more recent mattress makers in the new wave of manufacturers that deliver straight from the factory to your home through their online purchase model. This allows them to offer premium quality mattresses at vastly reduced prices, and is something that has forced older names to alter their business practices! Both products have excellent reputations among their particular market segment: hybrid innerspring and hybrid memory foam, respectively. However, this Saatva vs Amerisleep debate focuses on which of these two luxury products will suit you better – after all, you still need to spend the money wisely, even if it doesn’t cost you as much as a Tempurpedic!

Construction

Cover

The Saatva sports a cover made from 100% organic cotton, which lends it a classically soft, cool initial feel.

Euro Top

Right beneath this cover is a Euro pillow top that has been seamlessly fixed to the lower layers, so that it feels like a natural part of the mattress itself. It is 1.25” deep, and softens the initial response of your bed, while also producing an air of aesthetic appeal.

First Layer

The first actual layer of the mattress is a 3/8” thin sheet of memory foam that is intended to give the hybrid innerspring mattress a degree of contouring that counters its predominantly springy response. Since it is so thin, you don’t have to worry about this layer causing any slow sinking that usually accompanies viscoelastic bedding.

Second Layer

4-inch, 14-gauge individually wrapped comfort coils make up this layer – these are simply pocketed coils made from a slightly yielding variety of steel, so that they can provide you a mixture of both resilience and conformity. The manufacturer has packed these coils in special edge support foam to keep the bed from sinking in too much when you sit on the edges.

Third Layer

The second innerspring layer plays a predominantly supportive role, so instead of being individually pocketed, the springs are interconnected by means of a metallic wire. Furthermore, the thickness is increased to 13-gauge and the length to 5.5 inches. The result is a stiff and springy overall structure. On its own, it would have caused a lot of motion transfer, but thanks to the conforming action of the upper layers, that particular problem is appreciably countered.

Edge Support Boundary

The Saatva incorporates a foam border that goes around its lower spring layers; its purpose is to soup up the edge support in conjunction with the action of the edge support foam packing of the upper pocketed coil layers. Consequently, the edge support is superb, even for an innerspring mattress.

Firmness and Feel

Comfort and Support

The Saatva is available in three different models based on firmness, but all of these share a common basic structure with the difference in firmness achieved by altering the internal characteristics of the foam:

‘Luxury Firm’ is the flagship model of the brand, and it is intended to work as a one-size-fits-all solution that gives the average sleeper balanced proportions of support, pressure relief and contouring. Saatva does not disclose the ILD value for this model to keep others from copying their idea, but according to their own firmness scale of 1 to 10 (1 being extremely soft and 10 being extremely hard), they claim it lies between 5 to 7 – medium-firm in layman’s terms. Besides this variant, the mattress is also available in Plush and Firm flavors. For these, Saatva does disclose ILD values – 18 and 30 respectively. The Plush model prioritizes contouring over resilience, while the opposite is the case with the Firm model. You can also deduce from this that the ILD for the Luxury Firm model would lie in the neighborhood of 24.

Edge Support

The Saatva is highly supportive of your weight as you sit on its edges, thanks to the edge support foam encasing each independently pocketed comfort coil, as well as the special support boundary that goes around the edges of the mattress.

Motion Transfer

Despite the springy and resilient behavior of the mattress, it is able to buffer out small, sudden movements caused by sleepers. This is probably also a result of the cushioning action of the upper layers that contain memory foam.

Cooling

For an innerspring, the Saatva retains heat a tiny bit greater than the average. This likely stems from the Euro pillow top and uppermost comfort layer, both of which utilize viscoelastic foam, a known heat trapper. That said, the innerspring layers underneath do ensure a fair amount of airflow, so the heat retention isn’t especially noticeable.

Unique Features

Springiness with a hint of contouring

The Saatva is, first and foremost, a hybrid innerspring mattress, and it pulls of the innerspring part with flair thanks to its two spring coil layers. Both add a good dose of resilience and compressive support to the overall experience, with the upper one also working in tandem with a thin layer of viscoelastic foam and a Euro pillow top to provide personalized spinal adjustment. Put simply, you’ve got an innerspring that manages to feel soft on initial touch, which isn’t something you can commonly find in this particular kind of mattress.

Less costly

While not as appreciable a gap as that between mattresses sold directly online vs those sold through retail stores, the Saatva does cost a couple of hundred bucks less than the Amerisleep. Barring the obvious difference in response, both are quite equivalent in terms of the value they offer – except that the Saatva offers it at a cheaper price.

Vastly better edge support

There are three reasons why the Saatva is way ahead of Amerisleep in terms of edge support: firstly, a spring mattress is always stiffer over its entire surface compared to a memory foam mattress; secondly, its upper springs are wrapped in edge support foam; thirdly, a lining of edge support foam runs along its border. Compare this to Amerisleep, an all-foam mattress without any dedicated edge support enhancement.

Longer sleep trial

The Saatva comes with a 120-day money back guarantee as compared to Amerisleep’s 100-days. That’s almost three weeks longer to give the mattress a run to see if it is worth the expenditure.

Amerisleep Breakdown

Click for price

The Amerisleep mattress is available in 5 different levels of firmness, which are achieved by varying the height (and other properties) of its constituent foam layers. Thus, I will only discuss the foam layers that are present in their Medium-Firm ‘Liberty’ model.

Construction

Cover

The foam layers of all Amerisleep mattresses are encased in a Celliant® cover. This is a proprietary mineral fabric that conserves the heat radiated by your body during the night and reflects it onto your skin, until you’re at an optimum temperature for sleeping comfortably. Here’s a demonstration of Celliant® technology in action, conserving body heat:

The reflected heat boosts your blood flow, which in turn alleviates minor aches and injuries in your body that can occur due to leading an active lifestyle.

First Layer

Right underneath the cover is a 3” layer of Bio-Pur foam. This open-celled variety of memory foam is unique in that it is partly derived from plant-based materials, which are safer for the environment than traditional polymers. The open-cell structure also improves the heat dissipation capability of the mattress, an aspect that is often problematic for viscoelastic products.

Second Layer

Next up is a 2” layer of Affinity foam that is responsible for streamlining the transition from the contouring comfort layer above and the stiffer support layer below. It lends the mattress intermediate responsiveness and resilience, and keeps your body from sinking into the mattress further than the comfort layer.

Third Layer

A 7” layer of Bio-Core foam serves as the support core of the mattress, providing compressive support for the sleeper’s body that ensures optimal alignment of your spine. This serves to reduce pain that stems from an awkward sleeping posture.

Firmness and Feel

Note: This description is based on the medium-firm ‘Liberty’ model of the Amerisleep lineup, which is most directly comparable to Saatva’s flagship medium-firm offering.

Comfort and Support

Being a memory foam mattress, the Amerisleep is able to offer the signature conforming pressure relief that is the material’s chief highlight. This contouring nature of its surface ensures that the bed matches your sleep profile, thereby preventing the development of pressure points. The 7” thick Bio-Core support core is able to yield a healthy degree of support to keep your body in proper alignment while you sleep. It is assisted in this by the intermediate Affinity foam layer, which ensures that the bed adjusts itself uniformly to your bodily movements.

Cooling

For a viscoelastic mattress, the Amerisleep has a rather average response to heat. However, there may be random nights where it performs much better compared to the average and vice versa. Perhaps this has something to do with the Celliant® cover which reflects your body heat back at you and how that goes down with the prevalent temperature conditions from night to night.

Edge Support

Memory foam mattresses rarely yield decent edge support, and the Amerisleep is no exception to this trend: the edges of the softer upper layer are not able to hold out for long against even an average weighted individual sitting on them.

Motion Transfer

On the other hand, the plush, dead-supportive nature of the upper viscoelastic layer ensures that virtually no motion is transferred as a result of sudden movements during the night.

Unique Features

Contouring feel with of viscoelastic with some responsiveness

Thanks to its hybrid memory foam / polyfoam design that places emphasis on both the adaptability of the upper Bio-Pur layer and the deep support provided by the lower Bio-Care layer, the Amerisleep is able to yield a sleep experience that should please both memory foam purists and those who aren’t so keen on the sinking sensation associated with the material. It goes without saying that the exact degree of bias towards responsiveness or contouring will depend on the level of firmness you choose from among the five available options.

Sleep-enhancing Cover

Thanks to its Celliant® cover, the Amerisleep mattress is able to actively improve the quality of sleep by optimizing the temperature of your body and regulating your blood flow. This also carries the benefit of relieving you from pains stemming from minor injuries that you have sustained due to exerting activities. It is also worth noting that by conserving the heat radiated from your body that would otherwise be lost to the surroundings, the mattress helps you save on energy costs by allowing you to set the thermostat lower in the winter.

A Multitude of Options to Choose From

With the ability to choose between five different firmness levels, you’re able to better specify the degree of comfort / support you need from your bed – this is an important consideration for those who have specific sleep needs.

Longer Warranty

Despite its slightly shorter sleep trial period, the Amerisleep exceeds the Saatva in the duration of warranty coverage by 5 years. In fact, 20 years is well above the average in the industry and does indicate a certain degree of confidence from the manufacturer in their product.

Which One to Get?

Saatva

You could consider the Saatva if:

You want a mattress with a springy response: The Saatva will be straight up your alley if you’re tired of the slow, dead response yielded by the oft-advertised viscoelastic products of this day. It blends the classic springy stiffness of innerspring products with just a dash of contouring through a thin slice of memory foam on top, that provides you with a fast and resilient sleeping surface that also adheres to your sleep profile.

Edge support is a priority: Thanks to the multiple edge support enhancing measures taken by the manufacturer, as well as the stiff nature of innerspring steel coils themselves, the Saatva has far superior edge support than what can be achieved by the soft, plush Amerisleep.

You’re on a tighter budget: Being less expensive, this mattress should also appeal to consumers who are budget-bound and don’t have any particular bias between a viscoelastic mattress and an innerspring mattress – after all, the luxury-firm level has been designed to cater to the needs of the average sleeper.

Edge support is a priority: Thanks to the multiple edge support enhancing measures taken by the manufacturer, as well as the stiff nature of innerspring steel coils themselves, the Saatva has far superior edge support than what can be achieved by the soft, plush Amerisleep.

You’re not fully committed to buying a luxury mattress: Because it’s not that expensive, and more importantly, because it has a considerably longer sleep trial period, the Saatva is a safer investment if this is your first-time spending on a big-budget mattress and you’re not entirely sure if it is worth it or not.

Amerisleep

The Amerisleep will be the more sensible option in these cases:

You want a mattress that contours to your body: The high contouring ability of memory foam is its chief selling point, therefore a mattress such as Amerisleep, which makes extensive use of it in its upper layers is bound to offer superb adaptiveness to your body while you sleep.

A longer warranty matters to you: Not that I condone it beyond the ten-year mark (because mattresses rarely remain in a shape that is eligible for a warranty claim towards the end of the coverage period due to years of continuous use), but if you find it comforting to have a longer warranty period, the Amerisleep is the obvious choice.

You are particular about your sleep preferences: Thanks to the greater number of firmness options available for the Amerisleep, it should give more freedom to people who want to select a product that better matches their specific sleep needs.

You’re an exceptionally sensitive sleeper: While both mattresses are quite good at blocking out motion, there is something to be said about the way memory foam completely drowns out the impact generated by rapid movements – with interconnected innersprings, there is always the chance that something will carry through, which is why the Amerisleep should be preferred over the Saatva if you want absolute reliability in terms of motion isolation.

You are a sports enthusiast / have an exhausting routine: Using Celliant® in its cover gives the Amerisleep the ability to actively regulate your blood flow and body temperature, which not only helps you fall asleep quicker but also speeds up your body’s healing against minor injuries that can result from work- or sports-related stress.

I hope you find this comparison of a modern innerspring and a modern memory foam mattress helpful in in your bedroom furnishing endeavors – be sure to make use of the comments section for any feedback and queries you may have, and do share this with those in your circle who could benefit from it!
