Today, we’re going to examine Amerisleep’s best-selling bed, the AS3 foam mattress. Formerly known as the Liberty mattress, this product features a medium firmness to meet the needs of the average shopper, and its unique plush yet supportive feel makes it a great option for various sleep positions.

About Amerisleep

When it comes to finding the right mattress, working with a company with experience counts. While there are plenty of startups offering some pretty unique, quality mattresses, they simply lack the time in the industry needed to introduce multiple sleep products to meet the needs of a broader demographic.

Founded in Indiana in 2010, Amerisleep was one of the first companies to start selling mattresses on the Internet. After a decade in the industry, they now offer five models that accommodate different types of sleepers. We’ll take a close look at the AS3 in this review, but Amerisleep also offers:

  • Also a firmer option with low motion isolation for sleep partners

  • Deep contour and a great fit for side sleepers

  • Plush and great for side sleepers

You can see a bit of a theme as you make your way through the chronology of the product lineup. The mattresses get plusher as you go from one to five. Three is right in the middle, and the AS3 is Amerisleep’s medium model.

Visions of Affordability and Accessibility

Amerisleep founders Firas Kittaneh, Moe Kittaneh and Joey Holt had a vision in 2006 of a new and improved mattress shopping experience. They were among the first in the industry to envision a mattress you could buy at the click of a mouse, saving time and money on overhead expenses.

It didn’t take long for the idea to take off, and soon there were 12 Amerisleep retail showrooms opened. Today, they’ve grown to become, as Forbes put it, “The Apple Store of Mattress Stores.”

AS3 Foam Feel

HIVE® Technology for Targeted Support

Amerisleep takes a unique approach with the incorporation of zoning in foam. HIVE® is an acronym that stands for

• Harnessing
• Intelligent
• Ventilation and
• Energy

Essentially, it’s a type of zoning similar to what we often see in innerspring mattresses that offers a higher degree of cushioning in areas that don’t need as much support. It considers the head, shoulders, back, hips and upper and lower leg to help you feel evenly supported and reduce pressure points.

The most notable feature you’ll notice when you lie down is the pressure relief offered by the memory foam in the top layer, which makes sense since it has the most direct contact with the body.

The Affinity polyfoam in layer two does a great job transitioning comfort into support, and Amerisleep really nailed it in providing bounce to keep you from feeling stuck and allowing for more ease in mobility.

I love the way the HIVE® zoning in layer two works with the memory foam. The added support around the head, back and legs go a long way in maintaining proper alignment, and that extra cushion in the heavier hip and shoulder areas helps keep those pesky pressure points at bay.

Back Sleeping

When lying on my back, my lumbar spine is well supported, and the medium firmness is a good fit for back sleepers of average weight. If you weigh more than 250 pounds, however, you may need something firmer.

Side Sleeping

The combination of the memory foam and HIVE® feature in layer two is most notable for me when lying on my side. When your weight is stacked in the position, you can really pick up on that reduction in pressure points.

Stomach Sleeping

When stomach sleeping, the AS3 did a good job keeping my weight evenly distributed. However, if you sleep primarily on your stomach, I think you may find the medium firmness to result in sinkage in the hip area that throws off spinal alignment. In your case, a firmer mattress is typically a better option.

AS3 Firmness & Contour Testing

To give you a visual on firmness and to see how the AS3 measures up against other products we’ve tested here at The Sleep Judge, we used our proprietary firmness and contour testing tool to give you a look.

You can see the AS3 is closer to the top of the chart than the bottom, and this indicates it’s on the firmer end of the medium spectrum. This is often a better fit for those in the range of 150-250 pounds.

We can examine how the mattress offers contour by comparing the lengths of the blue, red and yellow lines. As you can see, there’s a steady progression of increased firmness as we make our way up each color which indicates an added 25 pounds of pressure. Based on this chart, I’d recommend the AS3 for:

• People between 150-250 pounds
• Those with a body mass index of 25 or less

Amerisleep AS3 Layer Lineup

The Cover

Let’s take a look at each of the components of the Amerisleep AS3 mattress starting with the cover. It’s made of a blend of polyester, Celliant, and spandex, and the final

result is a stretchy material that’s able to quickly snap back into place. This means it won’t bunch up when you move around or get in and out of bed. Celliant technology has been shown to reduce heat buildup and improve sleep quality, and we’ll put this to the test later in our heat transfer report.

Comfort Zone

There’s a zipper that runs along the center of the cover and another along the bottom, and I’ve opened mine up and cut the firesock so we can take a look at what’s inside.

The lineup kicks off with the first 3-inch layer of Bio-Pur® memory foam in the comfort zone. If you’ve researched the AS2 mattress, the AS3 has an additional inch of Bio-Pur® foam, making it softer and a better fit for side sleepers. It can also help sleep partners in the improved motion isolating properties that result from the added inch of memory foam in layer one. 

Bio-Pur® foam uses plant-based oils, thus reducing petroleum use, off-gassing, and heat buildup. It features an open-cell structure, another excellent measure in improving breathability in a foam type that’s notorious for hot sleeping. Transition Zone and Support Core

The next 2 inches of Affinity polyfoam work to transition us from plush comfort to strong support. Here, we find the incorporation of the HIVE® technology that targets support through zoning. The Affinity foam is firmer than the memory foam above it, and it provides a little bit of bounce to prevent the excessive sinkage that can often result when memory foam isn’t blended with the proper support.

You can see here the convoluted or egg carton shape of the transition layer, and this is yet another measure to prevent heat buildup.

The final 7 inches of the layer lineup features the Bio-Core® polyfoam base. It’s designed to prevent sagging and provide shape and structure to the mattress as a whole. As a combined unit, the AS3 mattress is 12 inches thick.

Heat Transfer Capability

Many consumers avoid memory foam due to concerns in heat transfer capability, and rightfully so. The early versions of this material were horrible at maintaining cool sleep.

Most companies these days incorporate measures to overcome this issue. In the case of the AS3, there are four primary factors at play:

1. Bio-Pur® memory foam layer is made of plant-based oils. This not only reduces petroleum use and offgassing, but it keeps heat buildup at bay.

2. Open cell structure of memory foam allows for ease in air flow.

3. Convoluted transition foam places grooves in between it and the memory foam above to help it breathe.

4. Celliant technology in the cover keeps the mattress cool through infrared light therapy that turns body heat into recyclable energy that helps your body heal and rejuvenates.

To see how these measures work out, we examined the AS3 in our heat transfer test to compare its cooling properties with the other mattresses I’ve tried out. As I observed the cooldown process using our thermal imaging technology, I found it performed around 40% better than average, making the AS3 one of my top picks for cool sleeping memory foam.

Amerisleep AS3 Performance Testing

Edge Support

The AS3 is an all-foam mattress, and this can sometimes be bad news in terms of good, solid edge support. It’s highly dependent on the core layer to provide that solidity needed to keep you from falling out of bed.

You can see the AS3 does keep me pretty well supported as I sit on various areas of the edge. When lying on the edge, it does an excellent job holding up. As with most foam mattresses, there is a lack of support when sitting on the corner, but the average person shouldn’t have any significant issues with edge support.

If you weigh more than 300 pounds, you may do better with the AS3 hybrid mattress, and we’ll be taking a look at it next week. It features an innerspring unit that adds the support you need that can help not only on the edges but across the entire mattress.

Motion Isolation

If you have a sleep partner and struggle with excessive motion transfer, a foam mattress can be an excellent choice. This is especially true in a product like the AS3 mattress that features memory foam in the top layer as it’s renowned for its motion isolating properties.

To demonstrate, I dropped a 20-pound medicine ball next to another of equal weight, and the resting ball barely moves as can be observed in our video review above. Even when I drop the ball very close, there is minimal motion transfer.

While there is a slight compromise in edge support in mattresses made entirely of foam, they typically dominate in motion isolating properties, making the AS3 a great option for restless sleep partners or for those who have conflicting sleep schedules.

Durability Expectations

By now, you should have a pretty good idea of whether or not the AS3 is meeting the markers of your mattress requirements, so let’s talk about quality. You want to make sure you’re getting a good bang for your buck, and this product has a lot going for it in the $1,000- $1,500 price range.

In foams, you need to learn the density to determine how long it should hold up. For memory foam, three to five pounds per cubic foot is ideal. Mattresses with a pcf of five are usually pretty pricey, and 3-3.5 is pretty standard in this price range. However, Amerisleep amps it up to four pcf in the top layer. Not only is this a great number, but it’s up in the comfort layer where it’s most needed.

The composition of polyfoam differs from memory foam, and a pcf of 1.8 is ideal in this material type. Here’s how the two polyfoam layers size up:

• Transition layer- 1.65
• Base- 1.8

The polyfoam base is right where we want it. Although the transition layer is a little lower than what we’d like to see, it’s still very close, and I think it’s well compensated by the foams both above and beneath. Overall, the densities found are well aligned with the price. In fact, when compared with similar products I’ve tried out, the AS3 provides an above-average value.

Maintenance, Protection, Care and Warranty

We always like to provide tips and tricks to help you make your mattress last. When it comes to the AS3, here are some things you should know:

• You shouldn’t flip your AS3 mattress since it would switch up the layer lineup in such a way that would be uncomfortable.

• Amersleep reports you don’t need to rotate the mattress as this would throw off the Harnessing Intelligent Ventilation and Energy zoning that maximizes the efficiency of proper contour. My personal recommendation for sleep partners who have large differences in weight would be to switch sides every three to four months.
• Amerisleep does offer a 20-year warranty, but that doesn’t cover spills and stains, so it’s definitely recommended you buy a mattress protector to go along with your mattress purchase.
• The cover is washable, and, when you do, wash on the gentle cycle with cold water, and allow it to air dry.
• I have mentioned I recommend the AS3 for those weighing between 150-250 pounds from a comfort standpoint, but the mattress features a weight limit of 300 pounds per sleep partner.

Amerisleep AS3: Our Final Verdict

I like that the firmness leans just a little more on the firm end of the medium spectrum. Memory foam often gives the feeling that it’s enveloping the sleeper, and this added support helps keep you from feeling trapped in the mattress.

Hot sleepers will appreciate the fact that Amerisleep has employed multiple tactics to keep the mattress sleeping cool, and these measures proved their worth in our heat transfer test. If you’ve avoided memory foam in the past, the AS3 has done an awesome job overcoming the two main problems with traditional memory foam.

If you like the idea of added contour but are reluctant to buy a memory foam mattress, Amerisleep does offer a 100-night sleep trial, so you have over three full months to try it out and compare your own experience with everything we’ve discussed here today.

I’d like to reiterate, if you weigh more than 250 pounds, I don’t think you’re going to get the level of support you really need for maximum comfort. In your case, I’d suggest checking out some great products we recommend that offer the features you need for a good night’s rest.

With that being said, if you weigh between 150-250 pounds, have a budget in the $1,500 price range, sleep hot, are primarily a side and/or back sleeper and appreciate targeted pressure relief with a harmonious balance of support and contour, the AS3 by Amerisleep could be just the mattress you’ve been looking for.
