Best-seller
When it comes to best-selling items, Utopia bedding is one of the champs. This comforter is available in three additional colors (aside from the plain white model), one of which is a reversible product with a black/gray color combo.

The comforter is a great and inexpensive option for products made from natural down. It can easily be cleaned in the washing machine and, as long as you follow the care instructions precisely, you should get your money’s worth in terms of product durability. The corner tabs that are found on this comforter make it easy for you to fit it inside a duvet insert.

Inside the comforter, you can find a fill that’s made from siliconized fiber which does a fairly decent job at retaining heat up to a point where you should feel cozy enough to sleep underneath it for the most part of the year. The comforter also features a box stitch construction to prevent the fill from shifting all the time.

Best reversible comforter
The Homelike Moment comforter is available in six color options and it is, in our humble opinion, one of the best reversible products out there. Each color combination features shades that you’ll love to see on your bed, providing you with the freedom of flipping the product over whenever you get tired of one color.

With an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Certification, this comforter meets the standards of non-toxic products that are designed to keep chemicals away from your bed. Although it is advertised as being an all-season product, we do feel that the comforter is too thin to be used during the winter, unless you are ready to pop up the bedroom temperatures before going to bed.

Each of the four corners comes with its won duvet loop so you’ll find it pretty easy to secure it inside a cover. The edge stitches feel pretty solid and there are no signs of them caving in too soon even after repeated washes. Speaking of that, the comforter can be washed in a large-capacity washing machine.

Who Should Buy This?
The Homelike Moment comforter is a neat down alternative product designed for people looking for a 2-in-1 product with a distinct color on each side.

How to Clean a Comforter

One of the trickiest things about owning a comforter, down or down alternative, is having to care for it. Of course, every product should come with a very clear set of instructions that will guide you through the cleaning process. If some of you would like to know what are some of the methods for cleaning a comforter before you buy one for yourself, we’ve put together a small guide that will give you an idea of how to process in order to keep your comforter smelling fresh.

#1: Stain removal

No matter how well you care for your comforter, stains are something that are bound to show up if you have kids, pets, or enjoy drinking the occasional coffee or glass of orange juice in bed. While some comforters can be washed in the machine and others can only be spot cleaned, removing the stains is something that requires immediate attention if you ever want a chance of having that fabric clean again.

  • Reading the label on the comforter is the first and most important thing that you have to do. That little label will give you all the DOs and DON’T of cleaning just about any piece of fabric, really, and it will tell you important information, like what water temperature to use and how you can proceed to dry out the comforter. Sticking to those instructions is of the utmost importance if you want to make sure you don’t ruin the comforter. Unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise, it’s safe to assume that your comforter should not be washed in the washing machine.
  • Removing the stains is something that you can do by using a combination of non-detergent solution and a little water. Some people prefer making their own stain-removal solution, which is typically a mixture of water and baking soda, or water and vinegar. As you process to remove the stain, try to shift the filling underneath it to the sides as much as you can. Put a small amount of cleaning solution over the stain and use a clean cloth to blot it. If possible, you can also rub the fabric together to loosen the stain. Regardless of the steps chosen, you will then have to rinse the stain with a little bit of water, but also make sure that you squeeze out excess water afterward. Using a clean cloth, gently pat the wet area. If you’ll be adding the comforter to the washing machine, you don’t have to dry it out completely. If not, make sure that you leave the comforter in a well-ventilated area to make sure it’s completely dry.

#2: Machine washing

If you own a comforter that can be washed in the washing machine, the manufacturer should provide with clean instructions on how to proceed with that. It is absolutely crucial to never try and wash a comforter inside the machine if the manufacturer tells you not to, as this is will permanently damage the product.

  • When you place the comforter inside the washing machine, you might have to move it around a little in order to make sure the weight of the product is evenly distributed. You also need to consider the fact that some comforters are just too big for a regular home washing machine. In that case, you can take the comforter to the dry cleaners or to a laundromat. It’s also best if you use a front-load washer, as there are fewer chances of you damaging the comforter if you do.
  • For the most part, comforters require washing at a delicate cycle and at lower water temperatures. The instructions on the label should clearly specify the best temperature for washing your comforter. If you have dust mites and think that your comforter can handle it, you can set the temperature over 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Adding an extra rinse cycle is also a good idea because a comforter is way thicker compared to your other pieces of clothing which are easier to rinse.
  • You need to be really careful with the amount of detergent that you use. Always choose mild detergent and never use bleach. You might also want to use less detergent than the normal amount you use for clothes in order to avoid having too much foam in the machine.
  • A lot of people who wash their comforters in the machine like to turn to the tennis balls trick. By adding tennis balls into a front-loading machine, they are balancing out the load and that is believed to wash the comforter with greater efficiency.

Bottom Line

Down alternative comforters are the best alternative to a product made from natural down. While the latter is considered to be a high-quality option, it is also more expensive and can sometimes trigger allergies or animal-cruelty concerns, which are just some of the reasons why people don’t want to buy such a product.

With a down alternative, you have an option that’s affordable, hypoallergenic, easier to clean, and is available in a variety of color options because the outer shell fabric is mostly some sort of polyester blend. If you’re not concerned with the dyes that may or may not impact your health (further proof is still needed on the matter) and you want a colored down alternative comforter, you are bound to find some models available in the colors you most enjoy.
