Organic Defined

The term organic is many times loosely used to define the way natural fibers are grown, harvested, and used within materials. For the most part, organic is the term that describes a natural fiber, such as cotton, grown unmodified without the use of synthetic fertilizer or pesticide, and which is harvested and then processed by machinery that is clean from non-organic contamination. The term can be applied without any sort of certification- however, in order to market it as certified organic, it needs to undergo rigorous testing.

Certification for textiles is applied through the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) which also recognizes the GOTS certification process.

This stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard and explains the steps and processes required to meet the very highest standards of organic labeling for consumer sales throughout the world. USDA is specific for made in USA product labels also, although GOTS may very well be combined.

– USDA Certification

To be USDA certified you can either be a producer of organic substances, or a seller of those products. You must first meet the requirements concerning which synthetic and non-synthetic substances can be used in the organic process. Once you have met this you can begin to apply, a process that could take years to complete. It is also an ongoing process that requires inspection and dedication to both producing and procuring organic products.

– Application

You must first become a certified NOP (National Organic Program) through a NOP agent. These agents can help you be in compliance with regulations and standards. Once this is taken care of, you can fill out and provide your agent with the application in order to be inspected. This also includes a fee.

– Inspection

This onsite inspection helps determine if the application is valid and that no prohibited substances are in contact with the organic products. This inspection includes an exit interview in which their concerns may be discussed, as well as any question you may have, are answered.

– Certification

If there are no concerns and all fees are paid, you will get your certification after another review of the process. In some cases, minor concerns may be allowed to be addressed. As long as these concerns are fixed within a certain time frame you might also still receive the certification. Other, more serious issues may be asked to be addressed for inspection again before certification is allowed.

– GOTS Certification

GOTS certification is similar to USDA certification and requires an application process and inspection prior to certification. GOTS defines organic materials as being 95% organic in any product, and ‘made with organic materials’ labels a minimum of 70%. This means a GOTS label may not be 100% organic but usually is defined by something minimal, such as fabric being cut by scissors that first cut a synthetic fabric.

Unlike USDA certification, which is valid forever unless criteria are no longer being met, GOTS requires annual recertification with a small fee attached. GOTS is accepted throughout the US and Canada, as well as major South America,  European, and Asian countries.

Types of Materials Used in Organic Sheets

Textiles are somewhat limited in scope pertaining to organic labeling since the fibers used must be grown and harvested without any use of synthetic feeds or pesticides. It also must be created, woven, cut, and assembled with machinery that has had no contamination with synthetics. The most popular materials used in organic sheets include:

– Cotton

Cotton is by far one of the most popular fibers used in a wide variety of fabrics. The cotton industry is long in history and is well regulated for organic grows. Cotton is often found in its pure form, as well as within blends to provide breathable properties. It is also very popular to use in the specialized weave, sateen which feels much like silk.

– Wool

Wool is another fiber with a long history and a well-regulated industry. Wool is the natural hair grown by sheep who are bred specifically to provide this durable material. Wool has many positive attributes, such as insulting for both cold and heat and well as the ability to keep its properties even when wet.

– Silk

Silk is the highly luxurious, durable threads spun by the mulberry silkworm. When unraveled these threads are amongst the strongest in the world and are popular for bed sheets due to their cooling, smooth surface that has many health properties.

– Linen, Hemp, Jute

Linen, hemp, and jute are all made from the fibers of plants which can grow without the use of synthetic additions. The resulting materials are drapey and soft and can be easily blended with other fibers for a smoother overall feel.

Why Use Organic Sheets?

Buying organic is not just a decision that affects you, organic growers also have an environmental impact. In many cases, organic farming produces fewer carbon emissions, plus there are no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides to leech through to water tables since organic labels do not allow anything synthetic in the growing process.. This also makes is safer for those working with the raw materials. Organic materials are also easy to renew and recycle.

Many conventional fabrics are made with chemicals to mimic natural products, and even those made of natural fibers are often treated with chemicals for colorfastness, flame retardants, and harsh cleaners. For those who are sensitive, this can create allergic reactions that affect both respirations and skin contact. Organic sheets, in particular, can be an important choice for those with infants and young children.

Organic materials are also often more breathable overall. This allows heat to escape to provide a cooler night’s rest. These materials also have a tendency to last longer since chemicals weaken the fiber structure of many materials, making them wear and tear much easier.

Expect to enjoy their luxury for a long time. The organic cotton uses 90 percent less water than regular cotton and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions, plus this product even comes in its own ecologically sustainable bag!

Are organic sheets worth buying?

The most common factor people use when buying quality sheets is the thread count. One would expect if you are paying for a high thread count you are getting a quality product, but unfortunately that is not always true. While the thread count factors into the quality of your sheets it is the actual thread that is used in the weave that is most important. In fact bedding made with better thread and a lower thread count will out perform and outlast sheets with a higher thread count and a lower quality fiber. Organic cotton is hand picked and uses no chemicals in its harvesting and manufacturing process. This creates long strong fibers which are of a higher quality than regular cotton or synthetics. Conventional fabrics are made with chemicals, flame retardants, and harsh cleaners that can create allergic reactions that affect both respiration and the skin. Organic sheets are a perfect choice for those with infants and young children.

What are the softest organic sheets?

One Park Linens are 100% organic cotton sheets in a soft sateen weave, and are also gently brushed for an even softer surface. A satin weave takes the warp threads and interlaces them with filling threads, exposing more thread surface. This creates a more luxurious, silky, durable fabric. They offer neutrally toned sheets that have a hefty 400 thread count that increases airflow and breathability for night time cooling comfort. They are certified organic having received certification from both Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and OEKO-TEX certified ensuring that your product is non-toxic and has not used any harmful chemicals in any stage of the process. The softness of these sheets is pure, fresh, crisp cotton.

Do organic bed sheets have Formaldehyde?

No! The good news is that true certified organic bed sheets are free from toxic chemicals. You will want to avoid sheets that are labeled as wrinkle-free, permanent press or easy care as this most likely means that to achieve those claims they were treated with a formaldehyde resin. Organic is the term that describes a natural fiber, such as cotton, grown unmodified without the use of synthetic fertilizer or pesticide, and which is harvested and then processed by machinery that is clean from non-organic contamination. The most common certification processes are the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), OAEKO TEX and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). To be labeled certified organic the companies materials and processes are rigorously examined and tested ensuring you have a top quality fully organic product, socially sustainable and responsible and free from harsh chemicals.
