How to Choose

If you’re looking for a mattress that’s compatible with an adjustable base, here are some of the things that you should take into consideration first.

Some of the best adjustable bases are compatible with as many different types of mattresses as possible, but that’s not always the case. Some beds are just better because their layers are made with more flexible materials. When it comes to pairing a mattress with a bed base, foam, latex, and hybrid beds are the best options. It’s more difficult to use an innerspring or an air mattress with an adjustable base. Innerspring beds are not that responsive when it comes to being used with an adjustable base. Airbeds are also not compatible because the movement of the base can cause air blockage inside the mattress’ chambers.

You need to make sure that the size of the mattress is compatible with that of the bed base. There are six standard mattress sizes and compatible bed frames: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and Cal King. However, certain brands make adjustable bed bases divided in the middle, corresponding to mattress sizes Split Queen, Split King, or Split Cal King.

The weight of the mattress is also something to pay attention to because of two reasons. The first reason is that adjustable bed bases have a specific weight limit they can accommodate before they are prone to damage, and the weight of the mattress will be combined with the weight of the sleeper(s), so you have to take the entire sum into account. The second reason is that heavy mattresses might not work well with adjustable bed bases as it becomes more difficult to adjust the angle of the base. Remember that a quality adjustable base should be able to accommodate a mattress regardless of its weight.

The durability of the mattress plays a key role in whether or not it will work well with an adjustable base. A mattress has to be flexible to bend to the will of the sleepers and the adjustable base, but the mattress also needs to be able to withstand this constant bending and flexing. So, it doesn’t matter if you choose foam, latex, or a hybrid bed, but it has to be made with quality materials that can withstand this kind of pressure.

The thickness of the mattress is another aspect to consider. When it comes to pairing it with an adjustable base, the mattress needs to be 6 to 14 inches thick for better maneuverability. If the material of the mattress is rigid, it’s best to have a thinner profile. Most people choose 10 to 12-inch mattresses with their adjustable beds.

Best King-Size Adjustable Beds

Now that you know what you need to look for in a mattress that’s compatible with an adjustable bed base, let’s look at some of the best products that are flexible, durable, and cost-efficient, so that you can find a mattress that suits your current or future adjustable base.

1. Layla

SPECS:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Mattress height: 10 inches
  • Construction: 3″ 3.5 PCF Copper-infused Memory Foam + 2″ 1.8 PCF Convoluted Polyfoam + 4 1/2″ 2 PCF Polyfoam (36 ILD) + 1″ 3.5 PCF Copper-infused Polyfoam

Best flippable mattress

The Layla bed is an all-foam mattress with a flippable design that allows you to switch between a medium-soft and a firm side whenever your body needs a different kind of mattress firmness. It is a bed designed with copper-infused memory foam, which is quite similar in terms of benefit to gel-infused memory foam, in the sense that it sleeps cooler compared to an all-foam bed that lacks this kind of cooling measures.

When you sleep on the first side, the mattress ranks high in durability. It is designed with foam in the comfort layer, and the medium-soft layer also has a layer of convoluted memory foam that allows air to pass through the egg-crate shaped surface. The core of the bed is a 4.5-inch layer of high-density polyfoam, which is what gives the firm side its resistance. It has a 10-inch profile and the flexibility of the foam makes it a good choice for pairing with an adjustable base.

ProsCons
  • Good motion isolation.
  • Dual firmness levels.
  • Good price.
  • Great durability on the firmer side.
  • Lacks edge support.

Who Should Buy This?

The Layla mattress is a great option for people who want a bed compatible with most adjustable bases, but also a model that can be flipped on the other side every time they need another mattress firmness.

2. Loom & Leaf

SPECS:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King, Split Cal King
  • Mattress height: 12 inches
  • Construction: 2″ 4 PCF convoluted gel memory foam + 2.5” 5 PCF memory foam + 2” 1.6 PCF polyfoam + 5.5” 1.8 PCF polyfoam

Best for combination sleepers

If you’re looking for a more luxurious all-foam mattress, the Loom & Leaf is a product that’s worth considering. With a 12-inch profile, it is compatible with most adjustable bases and is available in two firmness options: the Relaxed firm (with a firmness rating of 5.5 out of 10) and a Firm model (with a firmness rating of 8 out of 10). The mattress is designed with different kinds of memory foam and polyfoam, all working together to provide excellent comfort regardless of your favorite sleeping position.

Thanks to the choice of materials and the overall design of the bed, this mattress sleeps cooler compared to your average foam bed, but also packs other benefits that make this a worthy purchase, including a soft and breathable organic cotton cover and excellent lower back support. Saatva, the brand that makes the Loom & Leaf mattress, also sells an adjustable bed base that’s perfectly compatible with this bed.

ProsCons
  • Great for couples.
  • Two fitness options.
  • Quality foam construction.
  • Above-average durability.
  • A little expensive.

Who Should Buy This?

You should consider getting the Loom & Leaf mattress if you’re a sleeper that likes to switch positions throughout the night, but also if you suffer from back pain and want a bed that excellently balances comfort and support.

3. EcoCloud Hybrid

SPECS:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Mattress height: 13 inches
  • Construction: 2” Convoluted Talalay Latex + 2” Talalay Latex + 8” Pocketed Coils + 1” Condensed Cotton

Label: best organic mattress

WinkBeds is a mattress manufacturer that you might have heard about in the past, but did you know they make an awesome organic mattress that’s fully compatible with adjustable beds? The EcoCloud is a hybrid mattress that debuts with organic cotton and New Zealand wool cover, which is soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking. The comfort layer is made with two inches of convoluted Talalay latex, plus a transition layer that’s made from another two inches of Talalay latex. Thanks to the open cell structure of these two layers, you benefit from a mattress that’s completely breathable and doesn’t retain any heat.

The core of the mattress is made from eight inches of pocketed coils that are supported on the bottom side by an additional inch of condensed cotton. Putting all this together, you get a mattress with a 13-inch profile but with flexible materials that allow you to place it on top of an adjustable bed. In the firmness aspect of things, the EcoCloud mattress is a solid 6 out of 10, being ranked as a medium-firm mattress. It is a very solid bed that has excellent temperature neutrality and durability, almost no off-gassing, great edge support, minimal noise, and offers above-average pressure relief.

ProsCons
  • Eco-friendly construction.
  • Great edge support.
  • Excellent durability.
  • Sleeps cool.
  • Almost no off-gassing.
  • Bounciness makes it less ideal for couples.

Who Should Buy This?

The EcoCloud Hybrid mattress is a great option for people who like to sleep on their back, for those who want strong edge support as they have difficulty when getting in and out of bed, but also for those who tend to sleep hot and want a bed that’s naturally cooling.

4. T&N Original Mattress

SPECS:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Mattress height: 10 inches
  • Construction: 3″ 2.8 PCF Polyfoam + 7″ 1.8 PCF HD Polyfoam

Budget pick

If you’re looking for a good foam mattress for an adjustable bed but are a little low on cash, we’d like to introduce you to the Tuft & Needle original mattress. This is a 10-inch bed with a medium-firm surface, bringing forth two different types of foam and a construction that can withstand a little bit of wear and tear. It has a cover made from a polyamide and polyester blend, with a soft surface and breathable feel. The three-inch comfort layer is designed with cooling gel and graphite, being more breathable compared to other foam mattresses, but that’s also because of the low-density foam used in the upper layer. The core of the bed is a seven-inch block of high-density polyfoam.

While the Tuft & Needle Original mattress is a good choice for a budget bed compatible with adjustable bases, it does fall short in a few categories, such as durability. Even if the low-density comfort layer is more breathable, it will sag sooner compared to more premium all-foam beds. There is also a little off-gassing when you first unbox the mattress. It does, however, do a great job when it comes to offering that cradle sensation and minimizing pressure points, and it also isolates motion well, being a viable choice for couples that share a bed.

ProsCons
  • Convenient price.
  • Good for couples.
  • Above-average temperature neutrality.
  • Great pressure point relief.
  • Not very durable.

Who Should Buy This?

The Tuft & Needle Original mattress is a bargain buy for people who are on a strict budget but want a good all-foam bed despite the low cost. It is also a viable choice for couples that share a bed, but also for sleepers that love that body-conforming that only foam can truly offer.

5. T&N Hybrid Mattress

SPECS:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Mattress height: 12 inches
  • Construction: 2″ graphite Adaptive® polyfoam + 1″ microcoils + 1″ Adaptive foam + 6″ Pocketed Coils + 1″ High Density Polyfoam

Best hybrid

We’re back with yet another Tuft & Needle mattress, only this time it’s their hybrid model we’re focusing on. This is a bed designed for adjustable bases because it is created in such a way as to combine different materials and layers that aid in improving spinal alignment, as well as provide a decent amount of contouring for all kinds of sleepers.

If you’ve looked at your fair share of mattresses before, you’ll now see that the T&N Hybrid mattress is a little bit different than the others. It’s made with the company’s signature adaptive polyfoam that comes with graphite and gel infusions, being quite similar to what you’ve seen in the previously reviewed model. The transitional layers of the bed are made from one inch of microcoils and another inch of the same foam used in the upper layer. The core of the bed is given by six inches of individually-wrapped coils, plus another inch of polyfoam underneath, designed to protect this layer.

The T&N Hybrid mattress ranks well when it comes to edge support, temperature neutrality, and pressure relief, but it could be better in terms of durability (same issue caused by the use of low-density foam in the comfort layer) and motion isolation.

ProsCons
  • Great for couples.
  • Excellent pressure relief.
  • Sleeps cool.
  • Great edge support.
  • Questionable long-term durability.

Who Should Buy This?

The T&N Hybrid mattress is designed for sleepers with an adjustable bed base that weighs at least 130 pounds, tends to sleep hot or share a bed with their significant other. It caters to the needs of sleepers that weigh above 230 pounds, especially if they like to sleep on their backs or the side.

Bottom Line

Even if an adjustable bed base is considerably more expensive compared to what a regular bed base costs, it offers many benefits and is compatible with a variety of different mattresses. If you own or are looking to replace your existing King-sized bed with an adjustable ensemble, you will have to invest in a mattress that’s flexible enough to withstand the constant inclinations that it will be subjected to on such a platform. The rest is just pure mattress-knowledge.
