Bedroom Door Lock Safety

One of the first things you may be asking yourself is if bedroom locks are a safe choice to use on a regular basis, and are they worth using. The answer to both these questions is yes, they are safe, they are effective, and they are worth installing for use- but a few stipulations exist surrounding them that you want to take into consideration.

Do Not Use a Lock That Requires a Key

Unless your room is a rental room in a shared household, you do not want to use a lock that requires a key to both lock and unlock. These types of locks create a safety hazard and in an emergency may put you, or another in danger. The only keyed locks in a house should be to outside doors.

Be Sure You Can Unlock Your Door From Both Sides

Make sure a lock can be accessed from both sides when needed. Most household security locks have a pin hole that can be unlocked using a special straight wire key, bobby pin, screwdriver or other similar tool often stored on the top of a door frame of a house. These types of locks can generally also be unscrewed without too much effort if absolutely needed.

Rethink Locks on Children’s Doors

Locking a door at night can create a hazard and hindrance for anyone needing to quickly exit. Children often play with locks and can easily lock themselves in a room unknowingly, and may not be able to unlock a door when in a rush or panic. They also will lock a door in anger, or goofing around, and parents need access to their children at all times- especially if an accident were to happen behind a closed door.

Alternative Locking Methods

If the idea of a lock on a bedroom door makes you nervous, but you still want security, there ate alternatives available. Consider simple things, like jamming a chair under a door handle, or buying a specialized door wedge or locking bar that you can easily remove with a quick movement if the need arises.

Types of Locks

There are a few different types of locks you may want to consider. First and foremost is the protection of your privacy, but secondly, you want to make sure the use of your lock is safe- as explained above. Take a look at these types of locks that are popular for bedroom use:

Security Knob Locks

Security know locks are by far the most popular in home door locking option as they come in a push button or tabbed lock that is easy to unlock in case of emergency. They also are easy to unlock from the other side when needed.

Chain Locks

Although chain locks are effective, they don’t stop the partial opening of a door. Easy to install, they are also easy to use and can be opened from the other side if the need arises. It does take a little time and manipulation however.

Security Bars

Door jamming security bars are a good way to secure your bedroom from the inside without having to install any new hardware. These are also portable devices so you can take them with you for added security anywhere you go. They are also quick and easy to remove if you are inside the room with just a quick motion.

Smart Locks & Deadbolts

Again, it is never a great idea to have anything that requires a key on an inside door, but if you rent a room in a shared home, it is most likely necessary. Rather than replace the entire door knob, the addition of a deadbolt or smart lock system is a good solution for security purposes. Just be sure if you depend on a key, you have a spare somewhere if you need it.

What To Consider When Shopping for a Lock

When looking for a lock you need to think first and foremost about your reasoning. Do you need to keep people out when you are not around for security reasons, or do you need a lock to keep people out for privacy reasons when you are home? Privacy concerns are usually the biggest reason people want a lock on their bedroom, either to keep children out at inopportune times, or to allow children a degree of privacy from siblings and parents as they get older.

The most important thing you want to take into consideration is the ease of undoing a lock, or the ability to get through a lock if an emergency were to occur. A privacy lock should act only as a deterrent, not a security measure for this reason, and needs to be considered as such.
