When to Baby Proof Your Home

Your child grows in stages, and so can your baby proofing strategies. If you want to get a head start on getting your house ready, begin with a few simple basics before your child arrives. First off, you can break this down into a few steps:

Before Baby is Born

Take care of large item issues prior to the arrival of your child. This is a great time to take care of home maintenance issues, turning your hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid accidental scalding, replace the batteries in the carbon monoxide detectors and fire alarms, start covering certain outlets, and begin to replace chemical cleaners with more natural options.

Also, to help you out, start looking at how your kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom is organized to help you quickly and efficiently get to the items you need. The nursery or space where your child will sleep is also best to get set up. Keep heavy, tippable items away from crib sides, and cords secured behind furniture in these areas.

Before Baby Crawls

When your baby begins to sit up on their own, it won’t be long before they are scooching across the floor and crawling. And when that starts, they also will begin to pull themselves up on things. Consider the vantage point of a crawling baby, and begin to cover open outlets, get cords and electrical plugs covered or out of the way, and set up safe spaces with playpens and baby gates to control the space. Keep heavy blankets and pillows free from little fingers as well to avoid getting them tangled up in them or pulling them down over them.

You may also want to start covering corners, putting non-slip rug pads under rugs, make sure windows cannot close independently, and keep heaters and radiators off limits. Making sure cupboards that are off limit also are secured to keep items out of little hands.

Before Baby Walks

Once your baby begins to walk – watch out! Even though you may feel like this means nothing will be safe, by now your child has learn some basic communication, such as no or hot, and generally will listen to your tone of voice so you can help them avoid things that might be dangerous to them.

However, this does mean they can reach many more things, including the means to climb when available – so you might want to invest in ways to secure your fridge and freezer doors, door knobs to places such as the bathroom, as well as outdoor access. Stove knobs guards might also come in handy depending on the type of stove you own, and if you have a pool, a new fence, or pool alarm can be invaluable for more than one reason.

Where to Use Baby Proofing Products

As mentioned above, some of the most common places to begin placing baby proofing products are areas of high traffic that your child will often be in. Kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms are all worth paying close attention to. Stairwells and outside door access point, as well as windows deserve attention as well.

To avoid getting anyone paranoid, working regularly with your child and providing good examples and behavioral follow through can help your baby avoid most things that could cause them harm in the first place. Baby proofing certain areas should be complementary to good habits, and be focused on helping children avoid certain things rather than being a first line of defense.
