An Overview of The Best Sleep Number Settings for Side Sleepers

Candace Osmond

In this world, there are 3 kinds of people: the ones who sleep on their backs, the ones who sleep on their stomachs and the ones who sleep on the side. Each one of these categories is special in its own way, but there is one thing they all have in common: the need for a good night’s sleep. It pretty obvious that each particular sleeping position comes with advantages and disadvantages (just like every other thing in this world), but today, we’re going to address the needs of side sleeper.

Benefits of Side Sleeping

Sleeping on the side is probably the most common sleeping position in the world. There are also believes that sleeping on either the left of right side can provide several health benefits. Has your grandmother ever told you to sleep on your right side when you got stomach aches? Truth is that sleeping on the side will allow your spine to rest in a natural position, but it also helps prevent snoring, because your nasal passages allow for more airflow. If you’re experiencing back pain, there are chances that your physician will recommend you sleep on the side. It’s also an ideal position for pregnant women, to help alleviate some of that belly strain.

Side Sleeping Positions

Believe it or not, there are actually sub-positions (can we call them that?) to the side sleeping position. Let’s go over the most common side sleeping positions and discover what they mean.

The fetal position is so common, there’s even a phrase developed for it: sleeping like a baby. It is believed that about 40% of adults prefer this position, because it somehow offers comfort because of the knees that are bent towards the chest, reminding us of our womb positioning. However, it isn’t necessarily the healthiest pose, as bending the knees too much could lead to joint pains.

If you’re experiencing back pains and love sleeping on the side, you might want to place a thin pillow between the legs, in order to fully support your upper leg. The pillow that elevates the leg will also help keep the spine aligned. This way, you lower back, and your hips won’t feel that much pressure.

The log position (a.k.a. sleeping like a log) is common with about 15% of the adult population. The stiffness of this position may lead you to think that it’s highly uncomfortable, but you’d be surprised how beneficial it actually is. First of all, your spine will stay straight, because your torso is also straight, and your arms follow your body’s line. Sleeping like a log also helps with acid reflux problems, as well as keeps airways open enough to prevent people from snoring.

Last, but not least, there’s the yearner position, adopted by about 13%. Ever wondered why they call it that? It’s because, even if the body is almost in the exact same position as with log sleepers, the arm is elevated, as if the sleeper was reaching (yearning) for something.

If you are a side sleeper looking for a mattress, there is one basic thing to know: sleeping on your side creates pressure points on both your hips and your shoulders, so you need a softer mattress compared to people who sleep on their stomachs and need a firm mattress to prevent the spine from getting out of alignment. Every other feature you’re looking to obtain is just personal preference, but a soft mattress is not negotiable for people who like to sleep on their side.

In the following paragraphs, we are going to go over the layers and softness/firmness levels of all the current Sleep Number mattresses. We’re looking to establish which one of these models does the best job in alleviating pressure points created at your shoulders and hips. At a first glance, it seems that all Sleep Number mattresses are the same, mainly because their most advertised features have been included on most models. It’s true that features like remote control, SleepIQ tracking and firmness customization are present on almost all Sleep Number mattresses, but there are some differences that stand out.

Read through the entire article to discover more information on the layers that are added to each mattress, layers which contribute to the softness and cushioning of the bed. A common mistake is assuming that because you can adjust the sleep number of a mattress (a.k.a. how much air goes into the chambers), you can achieve the perfect level of firmness.

The Top Sleep Number Settings for Side Sleeper Reviews

1. SLEEP NUMBER 360® c2 SMART BED – Editor's Choice

Highlights

  • Mattress height: 8 inches
  • Comfort layer: 2 inches
  • Pressure relief: 2/10
  • Support: 2/10

Pros

  • Sleep Number’s most affordable mattress.
  • Compatible with platform beds.

Cons

  • Remote control is purchased separately.
  • Doesn’t include a memory foam layer.

The c2 smart bed made by Sleep Number is the most affordable product from these series of smart bedding. Sizes from Twin to Cal King are available, looking to cover the most common options out there. The mattress features a 1-inch gel-infused comfort layer but lacks memory foam and thus provides less support compared to the other mattresses sold by Sleep Number. Since this is a budget mattress (budget in comparison to other Sleep Number products), it doesn’t feature the SleepIQ technology that helps track your sleeping habits and stats. Due to its high level of firmness, it is most suitable for stomach sleepers.

2. SLEEP NUMBER 360® c4 SMART BED – Runner Up

Highlights

  • Mattress height: 9 inches
  • Comfort layer: 3 inches
  • Pressure relief: 5/10
  • Support: 5/10

Pros

  • Features a 2 inch gel infused layer.
  • Ideal for people who want a firm mattress.

Cons

  • Remote control is sold separately
  • Not suitable for heavy individuals

The c4 is next in line as far as comfort and softness are concerned. There is a 3 inch gel infused comfort layer hidden underneath the cover, promising to offer support and cushioning for sleepers. It is available in the same sizes as the c2. The mattress also includes 1.5 inches of polyurethane foam which is divided into 3 supporting zones. However, the firmness level of the c4 is pretty similar to that of the c2, because of the low number of layers inside.

3. SLEEP NUMBER 360® p5 SMART BED – Best for Back Pain

Highlights

  • Mattress height: 10 inches
  • Comfort layer: 4 inches
  • Pressure relief: 8/10
  • Support: 5/10

Pros

  • Good for people with back pains
  • 4 inch combination of comfort layers
  • Compatible will all FlexFit bases

Cons

  • Mattress runs a little too hot
  • Not enough cushioning for side sleepers

The p5 is a noticeable upgrade compared to the c2 and c4 models. Inside it you will find a 2 inch PlushFit foam layer plus 5 zones for providing extra support to the sleeper. The p5 also comes with a softer mattress top, aimed to relieve some of those pressure points. Due to the support provided and the layer combination within the product, the p5 is a favorite amongst people with back pains. However, this is not a mattress for side sleepers, as the mattress is still not soft enough to alleviate pressure on the shoulders and hips.

4. SLEEP NUMBER 360® p6 SMART BED – Best Moisture Wicking

Looking for an answer to how to move a Sleep Number bed is a responsible step to ensure you keep your bed in warranty and are get it from one place to another.

Highlights

  • Mattress height: 11 inches
  • Comfort layer: 5 inches
  • Pressure relief: 8/10
  • Support: 5/10

Pros

  • 2 inch layer of quilting foam
  • 3 inch layer of foam
  • Built-in moisture wicking technology

Cons

  • New mattresses have a chemical smell

Just like with the c2 and c4, there are little differences between the p5 and the p6 mattresses. The p6 combines 5 inches of pressure support layers and comes with almost every standard Sleep Number benefit you can imagine. The p6 is made of a Plush-style mattress top, plus a snit blend of polyester. The top itself features a 2 inch layer of quilting foam. Underneath it, you can find a 3 inch layer of foam, which contributes to a softer mattress, but still not the most ideal choice for side sleepers.

5. SLEEP NUMBER 360® i7 SMART BED – Best Memory Foam

Highlights

  • Mattress height: 11 inches
  • Comfort layer: 5 inches
  • Pressure relief: 10/10
  • Support: 8/10

Pros

  • SleepIQ sensors integrated in the mattress
  • The only memory foam mattress sold by Sleep Number
  • Snore-Support technology integrated aimed at adjusting the bed for people who snore

Cons

  • App may have connectivity and sync issues

The top side of the i7 mattress comes with a 5 inch layer of comfort and it is the only Sleep Number bed that’s made of 100% memory foam. The cooling technology is present to help people achieve a balanced sleeping temperature. Compared to cheaper models, the i7 integrates the SleepIQ sensors that are built inside the mattress to help you gather data about your sleeping habits. Each morning, you can analyze the stats from the night before to determine information such as when you sleep best or what can be improved. The mattress material is a combination of polyester/polypropylene blend. Due to the generous layer of memory foam, the i7 manages to fall somewhere in between soft and firm.

6. SLEEP NUMBER 360® i8 SMART BED – Best for Soft Sleepers

Highlights

  • Mattress height: 12 inches
  • Comfort layer: 6 inches
  • Pressure relief: 10/10
  • Support: 8/10

Pros

  • 3 inch of FlushFit comfort foam that promises to alleviate pressure in 7 different body areas
  • Better for soft sleepers than the other models reviewed before
  • Enhanced with temperature-regulating technology
  • Top layer consists of 2 inches of Hypersoft Quilting Foam

Cons

  • Not suitable for people who are on a budget.

Welcome to the Innovations Series of beds created by Sleep Number. Underneath the air chamber of the i8, you can discover a 1 inch base pad, while the top of the chambers is host to 3 inches of Plush-fit foam. As promised, this layer of foam works to relieve pressure in areas such as your feet, lower legs, knees, hips, lower back, shoulders and head. This is a first sign that we’re coming across a mattress that’s more suitable for side sleepers compared to the models we’ve reviewed before. The top of the i8 is also very comfortable, as it is made of 2 inches of Hypersoft Quilting Foam that also promises to allow your skin to breathe during the night.

7. SLEEP NUMBER 360® iLE LIMITED EDITION SMART BED – Best for Hot Sleepers

Highlights

  • Mattress height: 12 inches
  • Comfort layer: 6 inches
  • Pressure relief: 10/10
  • Support: 8/10

Pros

  • The foam layer of the iLE is made with breathable airflow design, great for people who feel hot during the night
  • 2 inch foam base pad supports the air chambers
  • Top of the mattress is made with 3 inch quilting foam

Cons

  • It is the second most expensive mattress made by Sleep Number
  • Difficult to balance cushioning and support

Made from polyester/polypropylene blend fabric, the iLE is one of the mattresses that’s part of SleepNumber’s Innovation Series. The specs are pretty similar to those of the i8, as it features 3 inches of Exclusive Comfort layer foam that’s placed right above the air chamber(s). Underneath the chambers lies the same 2 inch base pad that we found in the i8. The top of the mattress is home to 3 inches of Hypersoft Quilting foam, wrapped in a duvet-style pillow top.

As a general rule, the more dense and thicker the comfort layers in a mattress, the more cushioning and support it provides to your body. While the comfort layer is a major improvement from the basic c2 and c4 models, we’re still not convinced that this will provide all the support needed to take the strain out of the pressure points created by people who like to sleep on their sides.

8. SLEEP NUMBER 360® i10 SMART BED – Best Support

Highlights

  • Mattress height: 13 inches
  • Comfort layer: 7 inches
  • Pressure relief: 10/10
  • Support: 10/10

Pros

  • Mattress created 7 comfort zones to relieve pressure
  • Compatible will all FlexFit bases
  • PlushFit foam and memory foam is divided, one on each side
  • Features highly breathable airflow technology
  • Alleviates pain better than any other Sleep Number mattress

Cons

  • Truly very expensive
  • Split King model is actually composed of 2 individual mattresses

Here is the king of all Sleep Number mattresses: the highly expensive and feature packed i10. Since we’re talking about a mattress that costs thousands of dollars, we have a very strong opinion on the level of quality this product should reach. It is a luxury mattress that features a 7 inch comfort layer and has a total height of 13 inches. Above the air chambers lies a 4 inch reverse foam layer. This layer is divided into 2 zones that cover both sides of the mattress. One side features memory foam, while the other features PlushFit foam. The i10 promises to create the same 7 comfort zones as the i8 does: feet, lower legs, knees, hips, lower back, shoulders and head. Since the design is ergonomic and reversible, each person sleeping on the i10 can flip it to their preferred foam side.

The surface of the i10 features a 2 inch layer of Hypersoft Quilting Foam which, as you already know, integrates the breathable airflow technology that keeps your body cool even when it’s hot. SleepIQ sensors are included, as they are with most high-end Sleep Number mattresses. This means you can track, measure and understand the way you sleep and discover what you can improve.

Conclusion

So, all these products bring us down to the final question: which is the best Sleep Number mattress for side sleepers? There are only 2 obvious choices, the i8 and the i10. Since the latter is the most luxurious mattress in the Sleep Number series and promises to alleviate pressure in the same 7 points of your body as the i8, we really see no reason why the i8 can’t be considered the best mattress for side sleepers. The i8 features all the things you’d expect to get from a Sleep Number mattress. Depending on the size of the mattress you choose, you can benefit from either one of two air chambers, the latter being normally referred to as DualAir technology. Thanks to the remote control, you can adjust the firmness of the mattress at a number that ranges from 1 to 100, the latter being the highest level of firmness possible.

However, there is a common disbelief that circulates around the following idea: owning a Sleep Number mattress, which is known for allowing people to customize the firmness, means that you automatically get a mattress as firm as you want. Wrong! There are other important things besides the dual air chambers that allow firmness customization. You can’t just purchase the most basic Sleep Number model, set it to 0 and assume you have the softest mattress in the world.

The added layers of supports that go above the air chambers are super important and they contribute to softness and cushioning. And that’s why Sleep Number mattresses like the i8 and above are the best choices for side sleepers. Because they integrate levels of foam that regulate firmness up to a point where pressure points created at the shoulders and hips are alleviated.
