What’s the Difference: Bear VS Casper Original?

The level of time and effort that is required when purchasing a new mattress can be overwhelming for some, especially in recent years where weeding through models, features, heights and even layer construction or design is something to think about. The market sector for mattresses has become extremely competitive with each brand selling with a tagline along the lines of “best sleep you’ve had in years” or “you haven’t slept until you slept on (brand name)!”

This can cause the task of purchasing a new mattress to become daunting and something people will put off until the last possible moment. However, your body might have other plans for you, as the number of increasing aches and pains in different parts of the body could be directly related to the bed you are sleeping on night after night.

One type of mattress that has been proven to relieve not only back pain, but overall pain is a memory foam or foam/latex combination bed. Today we are going to delve into two well-known brands for each of these types of mattresses and break down just why they are great for pain sufferers. What brands are we going to look at? The Bear and the Casper Original Mattress.

— Construction of the Bear Mattress

The Bear Mattress, a purely Canadian product, has been gaining recognition outside of its native country with customers from other countries leaving nothing but positive reviews.

Touted as a recovery bed by the Bear brand themselves, this model features a construction designed to provide instantaneous pain relief.  Reviews from athletes, both amateur and professional, claim how the multiple layers of graphite-gel memory foam surrounded by transitional foams have aided in recovering from injuries

Check our unboxing article here.

• Top Layer – Celliant Cover

The first thing you will notice when setting up your brand-new Bear Mattress is the attached mattress cover that is smooth, stretchy and luxurious. This is because it is made from a revolutionary material called Celliant. Why it is revolutionary we will discuss further down the article in full detail.

touching-the-bear-mattress.jpg

A bed cover helps extend the life of your bed by providing a barrier against signs of aging that comes from daily wear. A cover will stop rips from forming in the bed layers and prevent stains from occurring. Using a mattress cover also extends the lifespan of the product and provides a cooling agent for the sleeping surface.

• Second Layer – Graphite-Gel Memory Foam

Resting directly below the Celliant cover is an inch and a half layer of graphite-gel memory foam. This foam is primarily a graphite memory foam, but it is infused with miniscule pockets of gel that allows for trapped heat to escape and maintain a cool sleeping surface.

The graphite-gel memory foam cradles the body, allowing it to sink into the bed until it is beneficial to stop. This contouring ability provides instant pain relief and allows for muscle relaxation throughout the body while gently aligning the spine into the correct position to reduce inflammation of the joints.

• Third & Fourth Layer – Proprietary Foam

The next two layers of the Bear model, while separate, can be combined in the description as they are both inch thick layers of proprietary foam that work together to offset the common sinking feeling that can come with a memory foam bed. This prevention tactic allows for the body to relax into the mattress comfortably and will provide another layer of deep pain relief.

These layers are dense enough to act as a major transition layer, preventing the body from reaching the more firm and dense base foam layer that acts as the overall support for the bed. It also serves the purpose of reducing motion transfer to a minimum, which is great when you are the type of sleeper that wakes up whenever someone (or yourself) moves in the bed.

• Final Layer – Base Foam

The final layer of the Bear model comes to a total height of six and a half inches and consists of dense base foam, as previously mentioned.

This layer supports the entire bed and any weight added to it from the occupants of the mattress while preventing the top layers of the bed from sinking to the bottom.

Using a dense base layer of memory foam stops the mattress from weakening in support over time and helps the bed maintain its structural integrity. The final layer of a memory foam bed is generally a dense material, so it is easily snapped back into its original shape. Once this layer becomes soft and no longer has the same support levels, it is time to look at replacing your existing mattress.

— Firmness of a Bear Mattress

bear-mattress-front-view.jpg

Using a generic scale for rating beds, with the lower numbers equaling a bed that has no support and all give while higher numbers have no comfort and all firmness, the Bear model currently holds a rating of 6.5 as per the Bear website. Independent reviewers have classified this mattress as anywhere from 5.5 to 6.5; so, the brand’s rating is on par with other sources.

The 6.5 rating allows for the Bear to be tagged as a medium-firm mattress which is the most universally accepted firmness level for any mattress type. This consideration is because it offers the same level of support to the all sleepers and their preferred position regardless if they are sleeping on their front, back or side.

— Feel of a Bear Mattress

Immediately when feeling the Bear model, you notice the cool smoothness that is the Celliant mattress cover. This material is almost satiny to the touch with a cooling feel, even as your hand (or body) stays in place for a long period of time.

— Unique Features – Bear Mattress

• Celliant Mattress Cover

The Bear uses Celliant fabric in the construction of their bed cover, which is a fabric that is not typically found in mattress covers. Using this material adds to the reputation of it being a recovery bed. If you missed the link to the Celliant website in the earlier section, it can also be found here.

Celliant fabric is typically utilized in the construction of athletic or active-wear clothing and can also found on select sport equipment that implement fabric components somewhere in their design.

Bear-Mattress.jpg

The makers of Celliant claim that this material can transform body heat into infrared light that in will seek out and targets any area of the body that is found to be in low blood-flow. A low blood-flow level can hinder how long it takes an injury or strained muscles take to repair themselves. This infrared light will target such areas and send the light to them, allowing for a higher level of blood circulation.

Clinical documentation on the authenticity of these claims are still pending, but there is no denying that Celliant material is extremely soft to the touch while possessing cooling properties and a high level of both breathability and moisture wicking.

— Construction of a Casper Original

The Casper Original model, while using foam layers similar to that of the Bear, implements a layer of natural latex to provide maximum comfort and pain relief the sleeper. These various foam layers provide a level of contouring that latex alone can’t, preventing recurring aches and pains from your generic bed.

• Top – Mattress Cover

The Casper Original features a blended-material mattress cover that acts as a barrier between the bed and factors that could damage its longevity. This bed cover will provide a level of breathability and moisture-wicking that is not typically found in a foam-based bed. These properties will prevent the occurrence of household germs and allergens finding their way into your bed and causing serious health issues later down the road.

This mattress cover can be easily removed when it comes to launder or freshen up your Casper Original Mattress. Just simply follow the laundering instructions located on the label and you will be putting your mattress back together in no time.

• First Layer – Latex Foam

Resting underneath the bed cover is an inch and half layer of latex-foam. This latex-foam has all the best advantages of both latex and memory foam but none of the downsides. The latex side of this layer will prevent overheating of the mattress, allowing for breathability and moisture-wicking while working with the foam section to provide a level of contouring pain relief. This pain relief comes from the memory foam cradling the body into the correct position to promote blood flow to damaged muscles.

• Second Layer – Pure Comfort Memory Foam

Following the latex foam layer is another inch and a half thick layer, only this time it is pure memory foam. The pure memory foam section of the mattress is where the bounce is located that prevents motion transfer and ensures a night of quality sleep.

This memory foam layer allows for body weight to be spread evenly over the bed and uses this dispersed weight to provide pressure to areas of the body that will respond positively, while redirecting pressure from the areas that will respond negatively.

• Third Layer – Zoned Support

The third layer of the Casper Original model is where all the sleep magic and pain relief happen, as it is a two inch thick layer of transitional foam made from a blend of polyfoam. This specialty blend of polyfoam is called Zoned Support and is a high selling point of the Casper Original.

This zoned support layer will increase the lifespan of your bed due to its sturdy and durable properties. This layer has a softer blend of poly foam at the top and ends of the mattress, where the shoulders and head would lie with a firmer section from the bottom middle where the hips and legs would rest in a natural position.

• Fourth Layer – High-density Supportive Foam

The final layer that exists in the confines of the Casper Original Mattress is a five inch layer of high-density supportive foam. This layer works with the Zoned Support layer to provide quality support to not only the sleeper but the mattress itself.

The high-density supportive foam will ensure that the mattress (and the sleeper) does not sink into itself and cause weakening supports throughout the mattress. It will increase the longevity and the durability of the mattress as it helps the Casper Original Mattress return to its original solid condition the minute body weight is removed.

— Firmness of a Casper Original Mattress

Casper_Firmness_Level.png

Following the same scale described in the section of the firmness of the Bear Mattress, the Casper Original Mattress holds a rating of 7.0. This rating, provided by Casper Original, is comparable to the ratings found by independent reviews around the internet, placing this mattress in the firm category. The latex foam layer allows for enough bounce and cushion throughout the mattress that it will suit sleepers of all positions, but it is important to note that some side sleepers stated it is a tad firm for their liking. Front and back sleepers will gain the most pain relief from regular use and contouring of the mattress.

— Feel of a Casper Original Mattress

casper-mattress-edge-support.jpg

When feeling the Casper Original Mattress, the first thing that comes to mind is the softness of the mattress cover that comes from a blend of fabrics delicately woven together. It has a velvety texture which is soothing against the skin and will provide comfort with a strong visual contrast of pure white against charcoal grey.

The mattress cover has a slight ribbed pattern that is visually pleasing and giving the mattress a rustic but modern touch all at the same time.

— Unique Features – Casper Original Mattress

Casper_body_support.jpg

• Dual Polyfoam Layer – Zoned Support

The Casper Original Mattress uses a unique blend of polyfoam to create what is deemed Zoned Support. This layer exists to provide pain relief all over the body and provide pressure in the appropriate areas. It does this by locating the firmest area of the polyfoam in the bottom middle of the mattress where the person’s body weight from their hips down would be situated. It then uses a softer blend located at either end of the mattress where the head and shoulders would usually rest as well as along the sides to offer well-rounded support.

Conclusion

There is no better than the other mattress when it comes down to it but rather, what is the better mattress for you and your individual needs. Gone are the days of generic one fits all mattresses, as different body types respond to different mattresses in different ways. It is extremely important to discover the mattress that will suit you and allow you to get enough solid sleep to increase both positive and mental health.

Research each mattress that you are interested in and keep a list of the advantages along with disadvantages of each. Look into price versus quality ratios and don’t fall victim to flash sales or pop-up brands but instead look at brands that you can trust.

Speak to a healthcare professional if there are any existing sleep conditions that could benefit or increase from the use of a particular type of mattress.

Remember, it has been clinically proven that adults spend a third of their lives snoozing, so shouldn’t it be worth it?
