iComfort vs Tempur-Pedic: Here’s The Scoop

Both iComfort and Tempur-Pedic are two very popular mattress brands, probably two of the most popular. WIth both of these brands, you’ll find various comfort levels, firmnesses, models, and more. With Tempur-Pedic models, you’re blessed with the TEMPUR material, which adapts to your body weight, shape, and temperature for a blissful night of sleep. Both of these mattresses seem like they’re the best for the money, but are they really? Let’s check out the real scoop between iComfort and Tempur-Pedic.

Serta is the largest mattress company in the United States, so it would be an assumption that their mattresses are extremely beneficial, correct? Well, the iComfort strongest point would be its durable foam construction. It provides conformity to your body and support for your neck and back. It also helps to relieve pressure points for a refreshing and pain-free morning. It also boasts of motion isolation so that there is very little distraction between partners during the night.

Durability

If you’re going to pay top dollar for a mattress, you would want it to last a long time, correct? One way you can tell how well the bed is going to perform in terms of durability is to take a look at the density of the foams. For example, the iComfort Savant contains 4 layers that consist of the following:

  • 2” KoolComfort Memory Foam with a 3 lb density
  • 1” Comfort Foam with a 1.35 lb density
  • 2 ¾ CoolAction Gel Memory Foam with a 4 lb density
  • 6” ComfortLast Support Core

A good quality memory foam bed should have a density of at least 3.5 to 4 lbs./ft³. If the mattress has anything less than that, it’s considered low density foam and won’t be as durable and will be subject to quicker breakdown of foams. Also, if you happen to be on the heavier side, you shouldn’t sleep on anything less than 5 lbs./ft³ if you want your foam to keep its shape. Not all of these mattresses are going to have the same density, so make sure you do your research before you pick one.

Pricing

The Serta iComfort Queen size mattresses can range from $1,299 to $3,499 depending on the model and size and this includes the foundation to go with it. Generally, the more thickness there is to the memory foam, the more expensive the bed is going to be. If you think this is an outrageous price for a Queen, compared to Tempur-Pedic, these prices are on the low end of the spectrum.

Available Options

For the iComfort series, there are quite a few options to choose from based on what you are looking for in particular.

iComfort Foam

This particular line gives you the feel of memory foam without the fear of being too warm. It is designed with their most advanced technologies to give you the comfort and support you have always wanted and needed.

iComfort Memory Foam

The memory foam line combines their TempActiv technology that allows the mattress to cool down and support all the curves of your body with their premium all-foam support system. There are 7 models available ranging from luxury plush to extra-firm and range from $1,299-$2,999.

iComfort Hybrid

Their hybrid models use their Everfeel Triple Effects Gel memory foam with individually wrapped coil innersprings for optimal comfort, temperature regulation, and support. You can find multiple models in luxury plush to extra-firm ranging from $1,299-$3,499.

With all models, you get a 10-year warranty and a 120-day In-Home trial, whereas Tempur-Pedic offers a 10-year limited warranty and only a 90-day In-Home trial.

Temperature Regulation

The iComfort is widely known for its Cool Action Gel Memory Foam, which boasts to be the world’s first memory foam that is infused with the cooling touch and support of their MicroSupport gel. It is supposed to promote a balanced sleep temperature so that you stay comfortable all night long. Compared to other memory foam mattresses, users report sleeping less hot on the iComfort than traditional ones, whereas those who sleep on a Tempur-Pedic seem to complain more about heat issues.

Customer Service

If you have a problem with your mattress, it’s important that you have your questions and concerns answered as soon as possible, right? I took a look into the Serta customer service satisfaction rate and I was rather disappointed. There were a lot of complaints about misguided information given by the sales associates and quite a few complaints about representatives not returning calls or living up to their promises. Sure, there were the occasional praises of wonderful customer service representatives that handled their calls like professionals and gave them replacements quickly, but the complaints definitely outweigh the satisfaction.

Tempur-Pedic

A Tempur-Pedic mattress is considered to be the crem dela crem of beds, but it doesn’t come without the hefty price tag. These high-tech mattresses come equipped with a special TEMPUR material that responds to your body’s specific weight, temperature, and shape for a personalized support and comfort. It conforms to your body, the TEMPUR material helps minimize pressure points to reduce tossing and turning that may keep you awake. Even when you do move around on occasion, the TEMPUR material reduces the motion transfer so that your partner can sleep undisturbed. It sounds like a dream come true, but how does it hold up against the Serta iComfort?

Durability

As an example for durability, we’ll use the Tempur-Pedic Contour Rhapsody Luxe. This is a 13.5 inch mattress in total with 4 layers of foam.

  • The first layer is 2 inches of a TEMPUR-HD comfort layer with a density of 7.1 lb/cu.ft.
  • Layer 2 is a general support layer of 2.5 inch TEMPUR material that comes in at 5.3 lbs/cu.ft.
  • The remaining two layers are 2.0 lb/cu.ft. polyfoam base layers for additional support and heat transfer.

There’s no doubt that the top two layers definitely hold up better than that of the iComfort because of how high the density is. Since they are such high density, they are considered to be of good quality and should be able to evenly disperse weight and not create indentations over time.

Pricing

If you have a big bank account or good credit, then getting a Tempur-Pedic isn’t that far out of reach for you. Their lowest priced mattress starts at $1,799 for a Queen and goes all the way up to $4,799 for a Queen. Just think about the price if you would want a bigger size, the price would go up even higher. Alternatively, if you wanted to pay monthly and have good credit, you can pay it off over 48 months.

Available Options

The Tempur-Pedic line has 4 different models that you can choose from, all with different options for your personalized sleep comfort.

Tempur-Flex

This particular mattress gives you all of the adaptive benefits of TEMPUR material with a more springy feel. It has a hybrid core for that traditional mattress feel and is topped with layers of TEMPUR material for more cushion that adapts to your body. This line costs between $1,999.00-$3,799.00.

Tempur-Contour

The TEMPUR-Contour line boasts to be the ultimate in adaptive support and pressure relief of TEMPUR material. It has a firmer feel to it to minimize pressure points and offers a thick core for a one-of-a-kind support. This collection costs between $2,599.00-$4,299.00.

Tempur-Cloud

The TEMPUR-Cloud is their softest collection. It offers plush softness and adaptive support and pressure relief of TEMPUR material. There is also a supportive core that adapts to your individual shape for optimal comfort. The price tag for this collection runs between $1,799.00-$4,799.00.

Tempur-Breeze

If you’re a warm sleeper, this is the collection to look into. These mattresses are a mix of their most popular lines with added technologies to help you sleep cooler and more comfortably. They respond to elevated body temperature in three different ways and reducing heat and humidity while you sleep. For these, you’re going to pay $2,729.00-$4,799.00.

With all models, you receive a 10 year, full replacement warranty and a 90 day sleep trial to customers with approved credit. You are, however, responsible for the shipping charges. Serta gives you the same warranty period, but a 120 in-home trial.

Temperature Regulation

TEMPUR material is meant to specifically adapt to the temperature changes in your body for a completely personalized comfort. Their line of Breeze mattresses are best for those who are looking for a true cooling effect. It responds to elevated body temperature and reduces heat and humidity while you’re sleeping. Unfortunately, there have been complaints about the temperature regulation features not living up to their expectations, but there are always those few instances where this will happen as we saw with the Serta’s.

Customer Service

For a mattress with this large of a price tag, it’s important that all of your questions and concerns are taken care of in a timely and respective manner. I did some digging into the customer service satisfaction rate of those who contacted the CSR’s of Tempur-Pedic. It seems that they have a problem with honoring their warranties and that their beds are cracking after a few years of use and their warranties are refusing to be honored. Their satisfaction seems to be a little better than Serta’s, but it’s still rather disappointing to hear that their customer service is shoddy, especially for such a high profile company.

Conclusion

Of course both of these large companies are going to charge an arm and a leg for products that are supposed to be proven to help you sleep better or cool you down. Unfortunately, it’s not always going to work out the way you want. They may not live up to their expectation, their customer service may not be very helpful, or you might just be all around disappointed.

I wish I could tell you that one was better than the other in this case, but I really can’t. They both have their high points and downfalls. If you want a better in home trial period, go with Serta, if you want a better quality foam, go with Tempur-Pedic, or if you want something completely different with a better value, go with some newer bed in a box options, for a much lower price. It’s not always the high priced mattresses that give the best performances.
