Queen vs. King: The Differences & Similarities

Buying a mattress online is hard enough as it is with all of the different options, but what about when it comes to choosing the size? Sure, one may look bigger, but is it really the right fit for your bedroom? Here’s where we come in. We’ve researched these two types of bed sizes for you and broken down the main features and benefits. So, which is bigger? A queen or king or king size mattress? Let’s discuss this below.

Which Is Bigger? King Or Queen?

This is a pretty simple question to answer, the king is bigger, but is bigger always better? The answer to that is simply-no. Let’s break it down, shall we?

Queen

Size & Space

In all honesty, i’m not a huge fan of the sleeping space the queen has to offer as opposed to the king. The width is just a little too narrow for my liking with dimensions of 60” x 80”. If you’re one to that loves to cuddle, then you will find that the queen sized bed is perfect for this because of its narrow dimension.

Now, just because i’m not a fan of the sleeping space, it doesn’t mean that it won’t work well for you. First, it is the ideal size for guest rooms or small master bedrooms. Its small size saves space, leaving more room for furnishings and walking around. The only other issue with the odd measurements of the Queen is that it throws off the balance of a large master bedroom. It can make decorating it very difficult.

Price

The price of a Queen bed is more affordable than that of a King. So if you are on a budget, a queen is definitely the way to go. You’ll also find that the accessories are also easier to find as well and cheaper. If you walk into your local retail store or go online and look for Queen bed sets, you’ll find such a huge variety at a lower price than you would a King.

Ease of Movement

Since the Queen beds are smaller, they are going to weigh less and will be easier to move around. This is a good option for those who like to redecorate often. If you have a Queen bed, you can usually move it around by yourself, unless you have some kind of health issue that prevents you from doing so such as arthritis or back problems. A king bed is going to be more difficult to move around.

Queen Pros and Cons

Pros

  • More space in the bedroom
  • Less expensive
  • Easier to move around
  • Closer to your partner

Cons

  • Smaller sleeping space
  • Throws the balance of larger rooms off

King

Size and Space

The King size bed is my preferred size because it gives me enough space to sleep in my own zone. My husband is a bed hog, and when he decides to drift into my lane, I can scooch over and still have enough room to sleep comfortably. It measures 76” x 80”, having the same length as a queen but 16 more inches of sleeping room, making it great for couples who love to cuddle or sleep in their own spaces.

When it comes to space in the bedroom, it does take up a lot more room. It doesn’t fit well in smaller bedrooms, especially those that are more narrow than they are long. The great thing about them, however, is that they balance out larger master bedrooms beautifully. It’s ideal to place a the center of a large bedroom and it creates a balance that you usually can’t achieve with smaller beds. It’s called feng shui and can be extremely beneficial to your life.

Price

Unfortunately, the price of a king bed is going to cost you more than a Queen would by a few hundred dollars, depending on the maker of the mattress. The cost of accessories is also going to cost you more than the queen would. The obvious reason is because there’s more material and everything for the bed is going to be bigger.

Ease of Movement

Moving a King bed around is a pain, trust me on this one. So when it comes to a king size bed vs a queen size bed, the king is harder to move. It’s bigger, bulkier, there’s more material, and it’s just not something that one small person could handle. It’s definitely a two person job. If you don’t redecorate your room much, like myself, then this is one of the advantages of the King that may work for you since you may not have to move it around as often.

King Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Plenty of sleeping space
  • Balances out larger rooms

Cons

  • More costly
  • Harder to fit into smaller rooms
  • More difficult to move

Queen vs. King Comparisons

Queen King
60” x 80” 76” x 80”
Narrow space for couples Ample space for couples
Great compromise in guest rooms for single sleepers or couples May be too large for smaller guest rooms
Works well in smaller bedrooms Doesn’t work well in small bedrooms
More affordable More expensive
May throw off the balance of a large room Balances well with larger rooms

Which Is Better?

The Queen and the King both have their pros and cons, so it really depends on what you want in terms of space. In all honesty, the Queen is the best option if you are on a budget or have a small bedroom. It seems to be the most common size bed in most homes today. If you don’t really give a hoot about throwing off the feel of the bedroom with a smaller bed, i’d say go for the Queen, it’ll save you a ton of money in the long run. The King is great for having maximum sleeping space, but other than that, it’s just a nuisance because you can’t move it easily, it costs more, and it takes up a ton of walking room.
