The Best Ceiling Fans for Your Bedroom

by | Ceiling Fans, Fans | 0 comments

Looking for a way to cool down your master bedroom in the summer and warm it up in the winter, while saving on your energy bill? Ceiling fans are amazing tools that supplement (and depending on the season maybe even replace) your heating and cooling systems.

Unlike your heating and cooling systems that cool or heat the air in the home, fans push the already heated or cooled air around to provide even distribution and airflow. Choosing and using the best ceiling fan for your bedroom, could help you achieve the perfect temperature and the perfect night’s sleep… every night.

Choosing the Right One

If you’re anything like me, walking into a home store and seeing all the types of ceiling fans to choose from is pretty overwhelming. Quite a few factors go into purchasing the perfect fan for your bedroom. Starting with the size.

The Right Size

The size of your fan is determined by the size, and the height, of your bedroom. Ceiling fans are all about ratio to function efficiently. Fans range in size from 20 to 80 inches:

Room SizeFan Size
75 Sq. Ft. or Smaller36 inches or Smaller
75 to 144 Sq. Ft. 36 to 42 inches
144 to 225 Sq. Ft. 44 to 50 inches
225 to 400 Sq. Ft. 50 to 54 inches
Extra large rooms / very high ceilings60 to 80 inches

Ceiling Height & Mounting

The ideal height for a ceiling fan is 8 feet from floor to fan tip. The height of your ceiling will determine how to mount your ceiling fan.

Flush Mounting

is for low ceilings and low mounting requirements, typically 8 foot ceilings. This mount will keep your fan as close to the ceiling as possible.

Downrod Mounting

is for high ceilings taller than 8 feet. A bar protrudes from the ceiling and drops the fan downward. If purchasing a fan for a high ceiling make sure to notice if the downrod is available, and how long it is to ensure the fan will drop low enough. For extra tall ceilings, such as vaulted ceilings, you may need to special order the downrod.

Adapters are available to allow you to mount a fan on an angled ceiling.

9 foot6 inch
10 foot12 inch
12 foot24 inch
14 foot36 inch
16 foot48 inch
18 foot60 inch
20 foot72 inch

Added Note: you’ll also want to make sure your fan has at least 2 feet clearance from any wall or (anything else).

Fan Design and Blades

Most modern fans will be designed for exactly what you need, to move air efficiently. The design of the fan blades is more of a preference as it is the angle of the blades that matters most when it comes to efficiency. The number of fan blades traditionally is 4-5 blades per fan. There are more blade options, but some suggest the more blades the less efficient.

Colors and materials vary widely. Some materials and colors are more popular than others. Some blades are designed to be reversible for variety. It’s a good idea to have options in mind before you start shopping, to avoid being overwhelmed and possibly purchasing something that clashes with your decor.

Lighting fixtures can be added to most fans with a lighting kit.

Think about how you want to control your fan. Sometimes you won’t have an option, but if you have an extra high ceiling, you probably don’t want to be bothered by a pull chain. Pull chains, wall switches, and remote controls are all possible options. Keep this in mind when you’re seeking for the right one.

So Which One

Fans, just like many other homeowner purchases, can be overwhelming when narrowing them down. It’s important to walk in the purchase knowing something of what you want so you can narrow the search down right away.

In the end, a fan is a fan, and with Google as help for installation, warranty and return options, and trial and errors – the best fan to get is the one that pops out the most to you, but also one that works.

From this list, we can definitely tell the Clarkston had very little wrong with it. It was at a fantastic price, provides lighting, and is basic in style so it’ll match many decors. All the cons we saw are easily overlooked because cost vs. efficiency in this one is at its prime.

The others on the list also scored great! There’s definitely something for everyone here. And even if you don’t find the perfect fan for you and your bedroom here, you can most certainly narrow down the must have options and the deal breaker details.
