Avocado Or Dreamcloud: Which One Is The Best For You

Hybrid mattresses have gained significant popularity within the sleep industry as they amplify the best features of two or more materials, which may be latex rubber, memory foam and/or pocketed coil systems. This combined with readily available alternatives has made the competition tougher for mattress manufacturers.

Avocado and DreamCloud are two mattress companies that offer several sleep products, hybrid mattresses being one of them. I’ve done this Avocado vs DreamCloud comparison to give you an idea of how these two respectable brands fare against each other, from the consumers’ perspective.

Avocado Breakdown

The Avocado Mattress Company was founded in 2015 in New Jersey, with the goal of providing its customers with affordable non-toxic, natural and organic built mattresses. The products are handcrafted within the USA and don’t make use of petroleum-based polyurethane. To back their claim, they hold certifications from Greenguard Gold, a third-party that tests for volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde.

Construction

Cover

The mission statement of the company is identifiable right from the cover of the mattress, which is much different from average products. Made of GOTS-certified organic cotton, the cover is light, soft and breathable, providing a thermal regulatory feature from the start. A four-way snitch knit pattern has been followed, all by hand without the use of any chemical adhesives. The buttons are hand-tufted, with the durable textile holding the mattress’ layers in place. Right under the cover is a layer of 100% natural Joma® New Zealand Wool.

This serves as a natural fire barrier while wicking away any moisture that builds up. Along with this, the layer holds natural anti-microbial properties, preventing any mite-infestation. The natural fiber also promotes breathability, keeping the temperature from becoming a heat trap.

First Layer

A 2-inch layer of all-natural Dunlop Latex Layer resides beneath the cotton-wool cover. The material is firm, durable and bouncy, providing the body with conformity instead of sinkage. Latex is also inherently a cooling material, which allows the body’s heat to be dissipated and a cooler night’s sleep. To aid in the mattress’ breathability, the layer is perforated with small holes.

Second Layer (Only in Pillow Top Version)

2 inches of 20 – 25 ILD rated natural Dunlop Latex makes up this layer. This addition to the mattress can increase the overall conformity and greater pressure relief, making it suitable for people who carry some extra weight. The Pillow Top version is at times also called the “Euro-style top”.

Third Layer

An 8-inch pocketed coil system made up of 1130 support coils (Queen model) makes up this layer. This allows it to issue a response that adjusts according to the body’s contours, ensuring optimal spinal alignment. The innerspring unit is arranged in 3 distinct zones, each having a defined perimeter and modified compression to ensure maximal targeted support. The three firmness zones include the:

  • Pelvic area: this carries the most weight and is therefore firmer.
  • Lumbar area: this is also firmer.
  • Shoulder area: this is softer.

The reason for following a “zoned” approach is to ensure that each area gets the right amount of plushness and conformity. The support coils used by Avocado are claimed to be one of the most advanced as they float independently, alleviating the risk of excessive motion transfer and promoting spinal alignment.

Fourth Layer

At the end, there’s a 1-inch layer of 100% natural Dunlop Latex, acting as a solid base for the mattress’ structure, and adding conforming support for sleepers. The 26 – 31 ILD layer absorbs force form the coil system and keeps disturbances to a minimal.

Firmness and Feel

Comfort and Support

The non-pillow top version of the mattress is composed of 2” thick Dunlop Latex along with an 8” pocketed coil system. This allows the mattress to respond in a plush and conforming manner. Latex keeps the body from sinking in by generating a bouncier response while the contouring is generated by the 3-zone pocketed coil system below. It is worth mentioning here that the presence of a latex layer means the mattress is durable and can withstand several years before showing signs of decay.

The bouncier rubber layer doesn’t mean you’ll be bounced back as soon as you try to change position during the night. You’ll get ample freedom of movement, while the pressure points of your body, i.e. hips, shoulders and spine, remain aligned for a restful sleep.

The pillow-top version contains 2” extra latex, adding pressure relief and greater bounce. This is suitable for overweight individuals as it prevents entrapment into the mattress.

Edge Support

Edge support is an important parameter for anyone who wishes to occupy all available area of the mattress, whether its for activities such as watching TV or if the person plans on sharing his/her bed. As Avocado features a layer of ergonomic support coils, you get equal level of support irrespective of the position you occupy on the mattress. This makes the mattress a good option for people who wish for reliable edge support.

Cooling

An organic cotton cover followed by a layer of Joma® wool means breathability is ensured from the start. Next comes the latex layer, which is already a natural cooling material. The layer is perforated which gives hot air a way out of the upper layers. The 3-zone pocketed coil system also promotes airflow giving heat a clear passageway all the way to the bottom-most layer.

Motion Transfer

The latex-build of adds bounciness to the mattress, which may be thought of as an amplifier of motion. However, the effect is neutralized through the lower layer of innerspring units, which are wrapped individually allowing them to move without affecting the other. This leads to minimal disturbance for the person on the other side of the bed.

Unique Features

Natural Joma® New Zealand Wool

Joma® wool is a signature product of New Zealand that has established itself as a reliable fabric when it comes to regulating temperature, wicking moisture and acting as a fire barrier. The wool is resistant to microbes and prevents similar infestation keeping your moisture odor free for extended periods of time. The wool can also trap air within its fibers and keeps the temperature regulated for the sleeper.

Conformity of Latex Rubber Layer

The DreamCloud also features a layer of latex rubber, but it forms one of the many layers, making it harder to appreciate its effect on the mattress. In contrast, the Avocado uses rubber latex as one of its primary layers, allowing the sleeper to gain first-hand pressure relief from it. The bouncy nature of the latex rubber provides cushioning for pressure points such as hips, shoulders and spine. In addition, if required, you can order the pillow-top version, which adds 2 inches of extra latex rubber, getting more pronounced conformity and reduced sinkage.

Smell and Off-gassing

Every product that has undergone a manufacturing process that involves chemical at some stage will possess a noticeable smell upon unpacking. As Avocado has been made from materials that are free from chemicals, the product is free from such odors and can be used right after buying.

Environment Friendly

Avocado cares for the environment, through its sustainable manufacturing practices as well as through monetary contributions, giving back 1% of its profits to organizations that work for the betterment of our planet.

Construction

Cover

A Cashmere Blend Cover awaits you as you lay hands on the mattress. The hand-tufted blend has a luxurious feel to it, making it clear that this is DreamCloud’s high-end offering. The complex process of hand-tufting connects every layer of the mattress, adding durability to the structure.

However, almost the same level of work has been put in by Avocado, which offers a hand-tufted layer of cotton followed by Joma® wool. Talking about functionality, the Avocado’s layers offer greater thermal regulation, protection against odors and mite-infestation. In comparison, Cashmere offers a more luxurious feel, has a warm feel to it but fails to prevent microbes from spreading.

Euro Top Layer

The second layer of the mattress is composed of 1 0.39” of gel infused memory foam, 0.98” of quilted memory foam and 0.39” of natural latex rubber. The gel-infused memory foam is the first point of contact, and absorbs your load, contouring according to your body’s shape. The pressure absorption carries out until the natural latex rubber layer generates a conforming response.

High-Density Memory Foam

Right beneath the latex rubber layer lies 1.96” of supporting memory foam that offers plush response and generates deep contouring support up until the 0.59” super dense memory foam layer. The super-dense layer is designed to keep your back aligned irrespective of the sleep position.

The construction is clearly different from that offered by Avocado, which features a 2” Latex Rubber Layer. The addition of memory foam of varying densities gives the DreamCloud greater contouring while the presence of a thin layer of Latex Rubber neutralizes the risk of entrapment into the mattress.

Coil Unit

The coil unit is composed of DreamCloud’s patent-pending BestRest Coil system. This is a five-zoned, foam-encased compression system that acts as a supportive layer for the mattress, working with the layers above to maintain optimum sinkage and conformity. This also makes the product slightly firmer than average, while allowing light weight individuals to reap the benefits of the comfort layers.

As the coils are wrapped individually, they give the bed an excellent bounce while helping to maintain motion isolation. They are designed with spaces in between them, aiding in air flow and thermal regulation.

The majority of the support is generated by DreamCloud’s spring system which incorporates the idea of strategic zoning to serve each major part of the body. While Avocado has a 3-zoned system, DreamCloud incorporates a 5-zoned one, offering targeted support for the Head, Shoulders, Hip, Knee and Lower Leg area. This means each part of the body gets the right amount of firmness and thus a more comfortable sleep experience.

Foundation Layer

The base of the mattress is composed of 1.57” of high-density memory foam that serves to keep the entire mattress’ structure in check.

Firmness and Feel

Comfort and Support

Memory foam adds contouring. This is what you may have heard. However, the rule doesn’t apply exactly on DreamCloud due to the mixture of layers used. If you’re looking for a product that provides a lot of sinkage then this might not be it. Even though there are several layers of memory foam, the presence of latex layer as well as the coil unit keeps them from generating an overwhelming enveloping response.

This is in fact one of the mattress’ strength as you’ll get a soft, supportive and weightless response from the combination of layers. In comparison, the Avocado’s bouncier response is much more pronounced making it more suitable for the category of sleepers who don’t prefer the plushness of a memory foam.

Edge Support

DreamCloud offers edge support through a foam-encased outer edge that gives you a firm response as you sit on it. In addition, each coil floats independently preventing them from creating a slope that would throw you off the edge. With that being said, the Avocado is better at this parameter due to the absence of any layer of soft memory foam.

Cooling

Memory foam is infamous for being a heat trap, however, DreamCloud tackles this problem through:

  • Gel-infusion into the first layer, taking heat away from the body down to the lower layers.
  • Adding a layer of rubber, which is a natural coolant.
  • Making the coil units breathable.
  • Adding a layer of high-density memory foam at the base, providing an outlet to the accumulated heat.

DreamCloud took 9 minutes to cool down to the room temperature, whereas, it took the Avocado one extra minute, giving DreamCloud mattress an edge in temperature regulation.

Motion Transfer

DreamCloud tackles the issue of motion isolation through its individually wrapped coil system that prevents your partner from getting disturbed by the movements you make during the night. The several layers of memory foam also absorb motion and bring overall stability to the mattress.

Unique Features

Cashmere Cover

Cashmere is a popular loungewear fabric that has a soft, luxurious feel to it. Made from the wool of Kashmir goats, the fabric is extremely lightweight and has thermal regulation properties. It has a snug feel to it, which adds to the comfort of the DreamCloud.

Combination of Memory Foam, Latex and Innerspring Units

The DreamCloud packs layers, albeit thin, of memory foam, latex and innerspring unit. This allows it to generate a contouring response while at the same time ensuring conformity and preventing total entrapment. The presence of a 5-zoned innerspring unit allows optimum adjustment according to the body’s contours and proper back relief.

Five-zoned Coil System

DreamCloud has a 5-zoned coil system that generates ideal firmness for five major areas of the body. In comparison, Avocado only takes care of 3-zones and therefore generates a more overall response.

Durability

The use of all-natural products by Avocado makes the comparison of durability a tough process. However, as DreamCloud uses reputable materials and techniques such as double-tufting, natural latex, high-density memory foam and a strong patent-pending coil system, it is apparent that it is more durable. This is backed by a 365-day trial and a lifetime warranty.

Cheap

When the Coupon Code is applied, you get $200 off, bringing the price down to $1199, which is $100 less than Avocado.
