Winkbeds Layer Construction

Cover

We’ll start our exposition by taking a look at each layer that makes up this product. Starting at the cover, you’ll notice the fabric is soft and almost silky. This is because it’s made of Tencel, a botanical-based fiber derived from the Eucalyptus plant. It has natural cooling and moisture-wicking properties, making it a good fabric for sleeping cool. Tencel fabric is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and OEKO-TEX, and this means the plant pulp used in production comes from responsibly-managed forests.

Layer Structure

Moving beneath the cover we find two layers of designer foams within the Euro pillowtop comprising the first two inches. They provide contouring comfort as the hypersoft foam offers pressure relief without leaving a body impression common in memory foam. The stabilizing gel foam works to absorb motion transfer which we’ll test out here in a minute. We move on to a 2 ½ inch, foam-encased, pocketed micro air spring unit. It works to improve both airflow and buoyancy.

Sitting on the mattress, I do get the weightless kind of feel as these coils work to provide that upward force you need for support. Finally, we arrive at the high-ILD perimeter support base. It’s designed to improve edge support and help make it easier to get in and out of bed.

Mattress Performance

Like many of you, I suffer from lower back pain from time to time. I did some heavy lifting about a week ago, so it’s been pretty irritated for the past several days. I think the lumbar support pad beneath the air springs did a great job of adding lower back support. This pre-densified cotton layer works to offer additional pressure relief and lumbar support while simultaneously reducing stress and tension across the entire lower back region.

Waking up after sleeping on my side on my Winkbeds mattress, I noticed a positive difference in the overall quality of my day. Under the lumbar pad is a tempered, pocketed coil system for maximum support and alignment. The coils are tempered three times and oven baked to reduce the development of sagging and body impressions.

The support coils contain three zones with the center third through the middle of the mattress providing extra support for the midsection and lower lumbar regions. When you lay down, you can feel both the localized pressure point relief along with the push-back body support in action as I feel very well aligned. I found I was best able to enjoy my Winkbeds mattress laying on my side, and I am currently struggling with a pinched nerve. If you suffer from back problems, this may be a good position to consider if you do make a purchase.

Picking the Right Firmness Option

I personally like a little more cushioning, so let’s talk about firmness. There are four firmness options, and the version I have here is Luxury Firm, the most popular. It works well for the average shopper in the three primary sleep positions and can work well for sleep partners with different preferences to consider in finding that happy medium.

  • For those who weigh 130 pounds or less, I think the Soft comfort level may be a little more satisfying. You’ll have a plusher surface that lets you sink into the mattress a little bit more. For me, this seems to do a better job at filling in the gap between the mattress and my lower back.
  • For those who weigh between 130 and 300 pounds, check out the firm option. It maximizes support in the lumbar area and prevents the heavier areas of the body from sinking in.
  • Sleepers over 300 pounds can maximize pressure relief and body support without sacrificing overall comfort with the Plus firmness option.

Motion Isolation

While bounce and responsiveness are both good, this benefit can turn into a bad thing when motion is transferred across the mattress with that bounce. Let’s take a look at how Winkbeds performs. You can watch our video as someone lays next to me and moves around. He weighs around 220 pounds, and I am able to feel slight motion unlike what I’m used to on all-foam products. If you’re a really light sleeper with a restless sleep partner, you may want to consider a mattress containing memory foam. However, if you’re like me and could sleep through just about anything, I think motion isolation is acceptable. You can see in another test how a resting 20-pound ball is minimally impacted when we drop another 20-pound ball next to it. The bounce was impressive. While not all motion is isolated, it was minimally distracting.

Heat Transfer Capability

When you order Winkbeds, you have the option to also purchase the coolControl proprietary base that works to adjust the temperature of each side of the mattress through the night. With the same technology used to heat and cool car seats, this option is exclusively available from Winkbeds and allows each sleeper to lower their mattress temperature by 10 degrees and raise it to 30. It’s an extra $2,200, but it could be worth it if you really struggle with temperature control.

I don’t have the coolControl base, so let’s take a look at how the product is able to cool down on its own. I laid on it for 30 minutes at a room temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. It took the mattress right around 10 minutes to cool back down, and this is right about average in my experience.

I took it a step further and used a sleep tracking device to measure the mattress temperature through the night. You want the temperature to stay a few degrees below your body temperature, and Winkbeds did a great job. The pocketed micro air springs and tempered pocket coils do help the product breathe naturally, and I think the Tencel technology in the cover aids in keeping you cool and dry. As you can see from my data, I was able to maintain an average mattress temperature of 93 degrees through the night. The ability to maintain a temperature slightly lower than 98.6 degrees helps ensure you’re able to enter into the deepest sleep stages. This product has been proven by Kansas State University to sleep 28% cooler than all-foam mattresses, so I think this is a great option to consider if you’ve struggled in the past to stay cool at night.

Durability Expectations

In most cases, people are in the market for a mattress that’ll last. To see what you can expect from Winkbeds, you want to look at components that are indicative of durability expectations. The foams in this product range from 1.5 to 1.8 pounds per cubic foot. In the micro air coils, you’ll find 1,358 in the queen model and 2,211 support coils. Considering the use of two coil units in one mattress and the fact that you want at least 800 in a queen when it comes to durability, that’s pretty promising in terms of overall longevity.

Edge Support

If you have mobility issues or find yourself on the edge of your mattress often, products with innersprings are a great choice. Take a look at how this mattress performs as I move myself to various areas of the edge. You can see that, even when I sit on the corner, a very vulnerable spot in all foam mattresses, I am very well supported. If you have limited mobility or trouble getting in and out of bed, I always recommend an innerspring first. Winkbed’s edge support should be sufficient for most sleepers.

Maintenance, Protection, Care and Warranty

WinkBed’s hybrid design includes three zones in the support coils that provide extra support for the midsection and lower lumbar region. I can definitely feel this support in my lower back, and I like how the lumbar support pad offers even more stability in this sensitive area. It’s so supportive that it almost makes you feel like you’ve lost weight. You can also feel the specialty foam in the top layers as they work to provide pressure relief.

There are many components that could make this a great mattress option for your needs. If you’re thinking of buying one for yourself, let’s first take a moment to review some important information to know for after you’ve become a customer.

Sleep Trial

Once you enter your credit card information and click “Checkout”, you don’t have to cross your fingers and hope you didn’t make the wrong choice. Winkbeds understands that a new mattress takes some time to adapt to before you can reasonably make this determination. That’s why they offer a 101-night sleep trial. If you decide it’s not for you, they’ll send their team to pick it up from your home, and you’ll receive a full refund.

Cost

Aside from the convenience, the best part of the online mattress business model is that manufacturers are able to reduce overhead expenses, and these savings can be passed on directly to the end consumer. The cost of this product reflects great value considering the quality. If you’re ready to make a purchase, here’s a breakdown of what you can expect to pay:

  • Twin- $749
  • Twin XL- $849
  • Full- $999
  • Queen- $1,299
  • King- $1,499
  • Split King- $1,698
  • California King- $1,549

Winkbeds Reviews and Feedback

Hybrid mattresses are designed to highlight the benefits of various mattress materials and minimize downsides, and I think Winkbeds did a great overall job of arriving at a viable combination when it comes to breathability and support. I enjoy the feel of the designer foams, and the air springs and coils provide an adequate bounce. The product is kind of thick. If you’ll have trouble getting into a bed that’s high off the ground, you may want to buy boxsprings or a base that allows a lower setting. Overall, I had a positive experience with my Winkbeds mattress, but let’s take a moment to see what others have had to say.

Pros

  • Product sleeps cool
  • Great bounce
  • Good motion transfer for an innerspring product
  • White glove delivery a bonus
  • Three zoned construction offers added support to midsection and lower lumbar region

Cons

  • Some complaints of off-gassing (mine wore off in a little over a day)
  • Product is very heavy and difficult to move

Who We Recommend the Winkbeds Mattress For

I enjoyed the Winkbeds design, and the Euro pillowtop added that extra degree of comfort often lacking in other products. I enjoyed the added bounce you get from the innerspring units, and I like that the mattress makes it really easy to move around. I think this product would make a great fit if:

  • You’ve had trouble in the past sleeping hot
  • You like that added bounce to get in and out of bed
  • You like the idea of a mattress in a box but don’t want to deal with setting it all up
  • You need added edge support
  • You weigh over 350 pounds and have had trouble finding a product capable of supporting you
  • You have lumbar and lower back problems

Our Final Verdict

Considering the quality of the components of this product, I think the price is excellent. Since Winkbeds ships to your door and waits to manufacture after you’ve made a purchase, they are better able to keep overhead low and pass on the savings to customers.

The entire unit is 15 inches thick, so it is a little awkward to move. They do offer white glove delivery, so you don’t have to deal with the setup. However, if you move a lot or live in an apartment building with flights of stairs, this could be problematic.

You’ll also need to rotate the mattress every two weeks for the first three months and every two months after that, so you’ll need to be ready with someone around to help as moving this mattress is a two-person job. However, if you’re able to properly maintain this mattress, I think it did a great job providing the right combination of contour and support. I also think sleep partners will enjoy the relatively low motion transfer while maintaining a great response.

The weight limit for the three standard models is 350 pounds. However, those carrying more weight can use the Plus firmness. Winkbeds offers a 101-night sleep trial, 10-year full-replacement warranty, and a firmness guarantee. I think this makes for an excellent product for anyone looking for something that is highly-durable and will offer strong support even for higher weight classes.
