Is used to be that the word cooling was not often used in relation to memory foam material. Due to the dense cellular structure of many foams, it has a tendency to retain heat and create uncomfortable sinks as you sleep. But lucky for us, advances in technology have allowed variable foam construction to allow the inclusion of cooling materials and structure so you can take advantage of the soft, contouring sink of memory foam and still sleep at a comfortable temperature.

The Tomorrow Sleep Company has allowed us to review their cooling memory foam pillow that applies some top notch advances in both memory foam design and cooling techniques to help you get the rest you deserve. Our results of our review are found below, along with a detailed account of the benefits and features of the product.

Breakdown of the Tomorrow Sleep Cooling Memory Foam Pillow

Balance is the focus of their memory foam pillow design. This pillow is dual sided with a gel infused cooling surface for cooling, and a plush breathable side for hugging. It is made to contour to your head and neck, and relieve pressure points and allow heat to dissipate. Despite having a dual sided design, the pillow is made to allow for temperature management on both sides.

Unpacking

These pillows came tightly rolled and compressed into cylinder like protective bags before being placed in boxes to be shipped. They did arrive in an unmarked, plain cardboard box, and delivered to my front porch. Unpackaging them was simple and only required I unzip the bag and slide the pillow out, upon which it promptly decompressed from its rolled state. There was some offgassing, although it was not incredibly strong smelling, and since the pillow is not of a great profile height, did not require any fluffing.

First Impressions

My first take was on the smoothness of the pillow casing, and then on the size of the pillow. To me it seemed less in height than I expected, and much softer overall compared to many memory foams I have previously reviewed. There was some heft, but not much, and I liked how well it responded to my compression of the foam: bouncing back pretty much immediately. It also felt cool to the touch and I could see why it was called a cooling pillow.

Features and Benefits

The pillow is fairly simple in design overall but does have some great features to help make it nice and comfortable. You want a pillow that works with your sleep position and personal preferences for a good night’s sleep. Below I’ve broken down all the information you might want to have in reference to this product prior to purchase, and provided my own impression of each through my use with it.

Size

The pillow does only come in one size, which by industry standards is more of a fit between a standard and queen size. At 16 inches x 28 inches it fit very well into my queen sized pillow cases without any tightness or hanging out the end. I measured the height to be 5 inches, which is a fairly average loft, and places it in the back to side sleeping category just on size and material alone.

The impression the pillow gives me is of a decently compact pillow that could be used in a variety of different supportive ways. It also rolled back up fairly easily and with just a little help I was able to put it back into the protective plastic case it came in for storage. To me this makes it a great choice for travel as well, or to use in an RV or Camper since it doesn’t take up much space.

DuoCore Cooling Memory Foam

I was pretty impressed with the feel of the memory foam. It is an ultra high density made to target pressure points and provide instant response. I found this to be very true, and also loved how soft it felt without sacrificing the underlying firmness of the pillow. Most memory foams cannot be aerated using pocketed air channels, but this pillow uses just that exact approach which allows for continual air flow through the pillow.

It also has a reversible comfort with one side gel infused (shown in blue). This side was slightly more firm overall, but only enough to be just noticeable. Gel infusion allows for a pulling of heat for the body which creates a cooling sensation. This is simple conductive physics, but can be quite effective when used with other cooling methods. The other side is softer and a little more responsive, but does stay just as cool due to the above mentioned channels which helps keep air moving and allow for the cooling gel to work effectively as heat moves away from the body.

Polyester Blend Knit Cover

The poly blend cover is a 54% polyester, 29% nylon, and 17% polyethylene knit that looks quilted and provides a cooling, smooth feel. It is highly responsive and flexes easily with the pillow compression and any folding or shaping you may want to do. I never found it to get tight or impede the core in any way, and my first impression was of how much I liked this feel.

However, if there is any place the company can improve upon their design, this case is it. Although the feel of the material, and the flex it provides, is a great idea and works well- it is delicate. This weave is prone to snagging and running. Even though it doesn’t destroy the integrity of the pillow in any way, I could see how over time with use and washing this might become a problem. In fact, it actually came slightly snagged in a few places straight from the bag- and I am going to guess it happened when being packaged since when I was repackaging it it was actually catching on my non-pronged ring.

Lay Flat Zipper

The lay flat zipper sits under the piped seam and wraps around the edges of each end to keep you from having to compress and stuff the core back inside whenever you remove it. This is a fantastic detail as foam pillows can be a pain to get in and out of cases and this made it much easier. The zipper opened and closed without any problems, and I liked how it was tucked down almost into the seam to keep it from getting in the way. It also easily flexed with the pillow and was not at all noticeable.

Inner Polyester Lining

The foam core is further protected by an open weave, polyester casing that is not removable. This helps keep the core secure, allows for easy air flow, and provides a way for the core to move effortlessly against the inside of the outer casing without sticking or binding when you are adjusting or shaping your pillow for comfort. The seams are sealed together well, and I found no defect in how it was put together- in fact, it was quite tough!

Pillow Care: Case Only Machine Wash and Dry

The foam core can be spot cleaned as most foams do not hold up well in the washing machine, nor are they easy to dry- leaving them susceptible to molds and mildews. The case can be removed and machine washed and dried, and although you should always use your own pillow case for added protection.

Warranty: 5 year limited, 100 day returns

The 5 year limited warranty also comes with a 100 day return policy- no questions asked. Shipping is also free both ways, so you can definitely check this pillow out without fear of having made a bad purchasing decision. The 100 day trial is also limited to one product per household (meaning you cannot buy a whole bed set, pillows, and sheets and sleep on them all for 99 days and then return them all). With that being said- I was curious to see if the snagged fabric on my pillowcase was something that was covered. With it being within 100 days of purchase there is no doubt I could return it, but it does seem like fabrics are not covered under the warranty once past the initial 100 days. In all fairness I can understand why this is a policy, and since the case works just fine and I use my own pillowcase anyway, I am not that concerned overall. Plus I don’t want to return the pillow as it is very comfortable.

Consumer Reviews

This is a fairly new product, but still has a decent amount of consumer reviews to look over. These seem to be mostly positive overall, but are a mixed bag in reference to use. Quality and feel top the charts in what consumer like the most about it, with how cool and soft it is coming in right alongside those details. The support it provides to the head and neck, as if it is cradling you, is mentioned more than once, as well as how ‘huggable’ it is. The loft of the pillow does seem to be a bit of a problem with some sleepers, however, with it being too soft, or not tall enough for broader shouldered sleepers, creating not enough support. For the most part it is marketed as a back and side sleeping choice, with some stomach sleepers of larger body size being able to take advantage of it for stomach sleeping as well.

The coolness factor, or dual sided support isn’t even commented on- meaning it doesn’t sleep hot or there would be sure to be complaints! I did notice that both sides felt fairly the same to me, so I wasn’t surprised to find consumers didn’t make much notice to the differences either.

The snagging of the cover that I notices is also mentioned by consumers as it is a bit of an annoyance. Described by one as a ‘nylon run’, having to cut the ensuing thread when a snag occurs does seem to keep it from getting worse.

My Sleep Trial Experiences

I’m a stomach and side sleeper, and love to ‘lay’ upon my pillows and use them for all body support (yes I use a body pillow sometimes as well). Because of this I prefer a softer, more malleable surface and usually turn to feather and down pillow choices. I do appreciate a good soft memory foam, or shredded foam choice as well, however, and the feel of this pillow is a popular one with me for my needs.

I do not sleep hot and so need to pay close attention to the feel of a cooling pillow to see how well I notice it. This pillow does feel cool to the touch if you are paying attention, and I did not at all ever feel as if there was any heat sink occurring. Plus, you can feel the airflow slightly when you shift as the air moves through the air chambers. I also did not notice much of a difference between the two sides of the pillow when it came right down to it. I flipped and shifted to get comfortable initially in each position, and had to look to see what side the pillow was on.

Back

I love to nap on my back and stretch out my spine and all those long muscles after a long day at work. Back sleepers require a lower profile pillow that is also responsive to the weight of the head and support of the neck. I found this pillow to fit the bill perfectly and hold my head in alignment without creating any sort of pressure points or discomfort along the back of my head or neck.

Side

This pillow did work for me on my side quite well, and allowed my head to sink slightly, but still be held at a proper height between my shoulders for correct alignment. It also filled in under my neck to allow it to relax. I do not imagine that anyone of a much broader shoulder would be able to use this properly, however. It was just about perfect for my size – which is short, and athletic in build with a small bone structure. The softness of it could possibly make it a layering choice – so I did have that check out in the results of a second trail below.

Stomach

This is too high a pillow to make it a true stomach sleeping choice, but, because it is so responsive, and I do like to lay upon my pillows to prop myself more on my side (for added spinal support) I decided to try it out this way. And it worked well. It cradled my upper body and shoulder without bottoming out, and allowing my head and neck to be in more of a gentle side angle rather than the sharp turn to the side it often falls into when sleeping on my stomach. It isn’t a down or feather pillow, but it is soft enough to provide a good alternative.

Trial #2

I was curious to see if a person of larger stature could comfortably take advantage of this pillow for back and side sleeping in particular. So I passed the pillow off to a male of much broader body shape than mine, but of close height. A self proclaimed back and side sleeper, I figured this pillow may be a great option, and asked him to layer it on another pillow if he felt it was too thin for side sleeping. He also sleeps hot, and so this was a perfect pillow to try out! His results we what I expected: as a back sleeping choice it was excellent, and much more responsive than what he normally slept with. As a side sleeping choice it was a total flop. It was too thin to use without layering it, and he found it just didn’t stay in place well with the pillow he was layering it with. He did comment that perhaps a thinner, softer pillow placed beneath it might have worked- so that is still a possibility for some people. He also went ahead and used it as a stomach sleeper, and loved how he could lay upon it and wrap his arms around it for both head, neck and shoulder support. Plus, he had no complaints of heat! In fact, I had to remind him to pay attention to that feature and he said he had slept comfortably with it and never even thought about it being hot.

The details that went in the comfort of this pillow are hard to miss. The pillow most definitely sleep cool, and is of an excellent quality memory foam that has amazing response without sacrificing support. The dual sided design is popular from the retail standpoint, but really isn’t that noticeable overall- and honestly if it was more pronounced may not make that comfortable of a pillow. Marketed for back and side sleepers, I’d say they have a huge win for back sleepers of almost shapes and sizes, but side sleepers are going to be limited- with only a select few of narrower shoulder width and smaller body types. The plus? It may be a good choice for some stomach sleepers as well. The casing, as smooth, cool, and luxurious as it feels is probably something the company is going to need to address. It may have wonderful flex, but it also snags, tears, and runs without having to apply anything out of the ordinary to its surface. Catching on a non-pronged, fairly smooth surface of a ring is problematic (Imagine if you had something with velcro in the wash with it!). Even though it seems as if the damage stays local to the quilted square it occurs in, this would create problems over time I imagine with the integrity of the case. Since this is a new product, I have no doubt that improvements on the overall design will occur.

Conclusion

This is a great pillow. I truly can recommend it for soft, memory foam comfort. The style design may need a little work over time, but with a 100 day trial for a worry free purchase experience makes it worth checking out. The customer service is considered excellent, and the quality of the materials used were well thought out for comfort purposes. Plus, it is amazingly breathable and provides a very comfortable temperature to sleep upon. If you are a back sleeper, I would highly recommend the Tomorrow Sleep Cooling Memory Foam Pillow. It allows for proper head and neck support, sleeps cool, and responds immediately to your own movements through the night. It also may work well in side and stomach position as well, so be sure to consider your own needs, body type, and preferences to see if it might be a good match.
