The Refreshing Health Benefits of Sleeping Naked

At the end of a long day when it’s time to crawl into bed and settle down for the night, the one thing that I absolutely need to do is strip down to absolutely nothing. Yep, that’s right, I said I strip down to nothing.

Why, you ask? Believe it or not, as weird as it may seem, there are many health benefits of sleeping naked that you may not be aware of. Don’t believe me? Still unconvinced? Alright then, let’s take a gander at these said benefits and see if we can convince you.

Benefits for Both Men and Women

Whether you are a male or a woman, sleeping in the buff offers both of you some pretty great health benefits. One may have more advantages over the other, but they’re still there and can even boost your love life.

#1: It Can Boost Your Love Life

Is your relationship on the rocks or does it need that spark back into it? I’ve been there before. I’ve been married for 8, almost 9, years and together in total with my husband for almost 13 years. Occasionally, we’ll find ourselves in a slump, lacking spark. When the two of us get into bed with nothing on, we’re completely exposed. There’s nothing more refreshing than feeling that skin-to-skin contact with the one you love the most. But how does this help your love life?

Sleeping naked is both physically and psychologically freeing. The oxytocin in your body helps you feel trusting with one another. It’s a hormone in the brain that’s secreted by the pituitary gland. This hormone is also released during sex and it has an anxiolytic effect that can increase romantic attachment and empathy.

Sleeping naked can also turn out to be something very sexy to yourself or your partner. Being close and cuddling with your partner while you sleep is beneficial to you.

When your skin is touching your spouse’s skin, it helps to connect you on a deeper level whether emotionally, physically, or spiritually. This also releases endorphins, which is the same hormone that is released during a workout. Overall, sleeping in the nude is extremely beneficial for your love life. For my husband and myself, cuddling naked is a stress reliever and we sleep much better.

#2: Better Sleep Quality

If you have an overall good sleep quality, you’re less likely to be stressed. You’ll notice that you’re not arguing or nit picking with your spouse as much or with your friends. Surprisingly, only 8% of men and women sleep in the nude. If more people knew that sleeping naked could boost your sleep quality, they would probably do it more.

Sleeping without clothes on helps you maintain a balanced body temperature all night. If you’re overheating because you have multiple layers on while under the covers, you’re probably not going to sleep well, at least that’s my personal experience. Removing your clothes can also improve blood circulation, which is good for the heart and muscles.

Once your sleep quality is improved from removing your clothes, as silly as it sounds, you also find an increase of growth hormones and melatonin, which have anti-aging benefits and help you sleep better overall thanks to the melatonin.

One of the biggest problems with getting older, though, is the way aging and sleep are related. As you’re going through the physical changes of getting older, your sleep habits change, as do your actual sleep needs. Click here to learn more.

#3: Burns More Calories

Not having clothes on in bed increases the storage of brown fat, the type of fat that burns energy in the wonderful form of calories. Increasing this brown fat amount can also help you improve glucose levels.

Since your body temperature is cooled better without clothes on, it in turn helps control cortisol levels better. This helps with weight loss because that cortisol allows your metabolism to function better to help you shed the pounds. You’re less likely to want to munch in the middle of the night and during the day, you won’t find yourself eating those high calorie snacks to please your appetite.

The more you sleep in the nude, the more you will be likely to lose weight by being able to control your cravings. You’ll also be able to keep your metabolism in high gear by eating small meals throughout the day and getting your daily dose of exercise.

#4: It’s Easier and You Save Money

Alright, how is it easier and how is it possible to save money just by sleeping naked? For starters, when it’s time get into bed, you don’t have to struggle to get into your pajamas. All you need to do is strip down, throw your clothes in the hamper, and get into bed. You don’t have to worry about buttons, lace, elastic, or heavy fabrics. Also, you’ll never have to buy PJ’s ever again!

If you think about it, PJ’s can cost quite a bit of money. A set of pants and a shirt can cost at the least, $10 for a set. If you have 7 sets, one for each night of the week, that’s $70 just in PJ’s. If you don’t buy them each year, you can save a good chunk of change.

#5: You’ll Always Be Ready To Go

No, i’m not talking about sex. In this case, i’m talking about being productive at home. When some people get home from work, they feel it’s necessary to change into their pajamas. This gives them a crummy excuse to stay home and do absolutely nothing for the rest of the night. I happen to have a friend like this and she’s always late or never wants to leave the house.

This can lead to a secluded lifestyle, which in turn could lead to weight gain. When you come home and keep your street clothes on, you’re more likely to get out and do more things with your friends or family.

#6: It’s More Comfortable

I’ll be honest here, it’s definitely more comfortable for my husband and I to sleep without clothes on. I seriously don’t know how people can sleep with a bra on. When I use to sleep with clothes on, I would find myself constantly waking up to adjust a shirt that was being pulled too tight or adjusting pants that had rode up to my stomach. When I look back on it now, it just seemed really inconvenient and disruptive.

Once you turn to sleeping naked, you’ll experience much less night sweating and you’ll feel super cozy under your soft blanket that’s comfortably cradling your bare skin. Overall, sleeping naked is way more comfortable than wearing tight fitting PJ’s or undies.

#7: Benefits Of Skin on Skin Contact

I love rolling over and feeling my husband’s skin on mine. To me, it’s very comforting. Our skin is the largest organ on our bodies and it can be very responsive and sensitive. Touching or being touched by someone can be quite relaxing, soothing, stimulating, and can bond you and your partner. Not to mention, it can lower blood pressure and anxiety.

Skin to skin contact is just as beneficial to adults as it is to babies. Babies being held against skin cried 82% lessthan those who were in clothes and left alone. If you cuddle nude, it can strengthen your immune system. Your body is then able to fight off viruses better.

Benefits of Cuddling

Cuddling also makes us less anxious. I do happen to suffer from an anxiety problem and instead of turning to prescription medications, I turn to the feel of my husbands skin. When he snuggles up next to me, my anxiety seems to disappear and I feel 100% better with myself and with us. The reason for this is because the skin to skin contact signals our adrenal glands to help ward off excessive amounts of cortisol production, a stress hormone.

#8: Better Skin

All throughout the day, your skin is confined to tight jeans, tight shirts, underwear, socks, and whatever else you bundle yourself in. Your skin can’t breathe because it’s so restricted. This can cause friction or irritation from constant rubbing, especially while you’re sleeping.

Disadvantage of Sleeping on Pajamas

If you sleep in pajamas, the heat that gets trapped inside creates a warm and moist environment which is a breeding ground for yeast and fungus. If you have skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema, it can be worsened by sleeping with clothes on.

How Collagen is Produced?

At night, your skin cell regeneration is almost doubled, collagen production is put in high gear, and any harmful free radicals are disposed of. Sleeping without clothes on allows your body to breathe, which allows your pores access to rich oxygen. This boosts circulation and helps your skin regenerate, making your skin appear more youthful and radiant.

#9: Human Growth Hormone

The human growth hormone, or HGC, is produced by the pituitary gland. It helps regulate body composition, muscle and bone growth, and regulated body fluids. It’s responsible for regulating sugar and fat metabolism, heart function, and it’s the chemical that tells a pregnancy test that a woman is pregnant.

If you sleep naked, you’ll start to see your skin “glow” more. If you’re tossing and turning all night due to being too warm, it disrupts the release of melatonin and growth hormone. These are the two main anti-aging hormones you have. When your body temperature drops during sleep, more of the growth hormone is released and it works its magic.

Sleep without clothes on and you’ll find your skin more youthful looking and your hair will be more luminous.

#10: Temperature Regulation

I know i’ve talked quite a bit about this already, butt cortisol, melatonin, hair, and sleeping well is all linked to temperature regulation. If you’re sleeping in pajamas that make you sweat, it comes with a slew of health issues. Let’s break them down one by one for better understanding.

Cortisol Regulation

Sleeping in the buff, as i’ve said before, helps control your body temperature better. As a result of this, you’re less likely to have spikes of cortisol levels. The higher the levels, the slower your metabolism is going to be, which can raise your appetite. This is an obesity disaster in the making. Sleeping without clothes on will keep your body temperature cooler and cortisol levels lower.

Melatonin Regulation

If you can keep your sleeping area at or below 70 degrees, your body can regulate its melatonin levels easier. This chemical can help prevent noticeable aging skin, so if you’re constantly wrapped up in fabrics while you’re in bed, you’re actually preventing the effective use of melatonin production.

Melatonin is also essential to helping you sleep better. The more melatonin you produce, the more restful nights of sleep you’ll get. So, instead of turning to melatonin supplements, just take off your clothes and snuggle up to your partner or a cozy blanket and pillow.

Easier Summertime Sleeping

If you’re not fortunate enough to have an air conditioner or your home/apartment doesn’t have suitable windows or space for one, sleeping naked can cool you down as well as an air conditioner can. If you’re still sleeping in pajamas while it’s 80 degrees in your home, you’re body temperature is going to be way too high to sleep comfortably. Strip down and get rid of the covers, you’ll find yourself sleeping much better this way.

Better and Stronger Hair

This links back to the melatonin and HGC. Both of these are released when your body temperature is cooler. They are also known for their ability to regenerate the health of your skin and hair. So, when you sleep in the nude, you can bet that you’re going to notice healthier looking hair because your pores are all open and the fresh air and nutrients can enter the body.

#11: Benefits for Men

For all of you men out there who still sleep in boxers, tighty whities, or boxer briefs, this section is specifically for you. You guys have all of the same benefits as us women do when it comes to sleeping naked, but there’s one thing that you have that most of us women don’t-testicles.

Protecting Your Sperm

Is sleeping without underwear better for you? Well, let’s say you and your wife or partner are trying to conceive and you may be having some issues. The first place you could start, instead of dropping wads of cash to get your swimmers tested, is to ditch the undies.

500 men were studied by the researchers from the Institute of Child Health and Development and Stanford University. The ones who chose to wear loose fitting boxers during the day and went commando at night for one year had a 25% lower rate of damaged DNA in their sperm than those who wore tight underwear all of the time.

Men who have warmer testicles either through heat exposure at their job or from wearing tight underwear, have poorer semen quality than that of those who don’t, according to Allan Pacey, a leading fertility expert and researcher.

Men, testes were meant to be free, this is why they are located outside of the body, just like our skin. In order for your testes to produce adequate amounts of swimmers, the temperature of your testicles need to be lower than your core body temperature.

#12: Benefits for Women

Alright ladies, it’s your turn now. We have many different body parts that we adore and that we want to keep healthy and refreshed. One of these areas that we all need to focus on, is our vaginas.

Keeping The Vagina Healthy

Stop worrying about whether or not sleeping nude is sanitary for your lady bits. As long as you wash your bedding frequently, sleeping naked is extremely healthy for you, especially your vagina. Sleeping in tight underwear is much riskier than sleeping without any on because those tight, cute undies that you love so much is actually creating a dark, moist environment that your vagina hates.

There are two groups of women specifically who may benefit from sleeping without underpants on: those who have chronic vaginitis, and those who are prone to vaginal yeast infections, itchiness, and irritation. This bacteria loves dark, moist environments and when your lady parts are covered by fabric all day, your vagina turns from a flowery field of roses and daisies to a toxic waste plant. This could also be very dangerous during pregnancy.

Let me tell you something, my husband and I are commando advocates. We don’t wear underwear-ever, unless it’s that time of the month for me. That’s the only time my bits see any kind of restrictive underpants. In the summertime especially, I let my lady parts air out all day under a long skirt, and it’s actually really healthy.

One of the other benefits of not wearing undies is the fact that if you’re not really a morning person like me, you can get away with skipping your morning shower. Fewer night sweats makes for a really well aired out vagina, which equals to a cleaner body. If you wake up clean, you won’t suffer from not taking a shower in the morning. I suggest one at night though, just so you aren’t going too long without washing.

Ladies, do your vaginas a favor and let it come up for some air. If it can breathe, it’s happier, cleaner, and more appealing to your partner. If you can’t seem to go commando just yet, opt for cotton undies that are loose and breathable. No thongs, though, They’re literally butt floss and can transfer bacteria from your bum to your privates even after showering, causing a UTI or other nasty issues.

Conclusion

There you have it ladies and gentlemen, poof that sleeping naked is beneficial to your health. As a couple, it can bring your closer to your partner, it’s great starter for sex. It also boosts your confidence, and keeps your body temperature at a cooler rate. I mean, you could cool your body temperature down with a cooling mattress, but why not try removing your clothes as a first option. Once your body temperature is cooled down, your natural chemicals can work their magic better, you’ll sleep longer, you’ll notice better hair and skin, and you’ll just feel all around more refreshed and ready to go.

Personally, I love sleeping without clothes on. It’s very freeing and it’s a great start for foreplay if you’re into that. It definitely does bring my husband and I closer and we never go to bed angry.
