Poor sleep can be attributed to a myriad of different factors, but one of the biggest culprits on the list of sleep deprivation causes is your mattress. The TEMPUR-pedic Cloud Supreme is one of six soft mattresses found within the Cloud foam collection that includes an extra layer of extra-soft TEMPUR material. This particular model falls in the second to most firm of these choices, and as with the others, is geared toward combination sleepers who don’t spend too much time in any one position throughout the night.

TEMPUR-pedic has been in business for the last 25 years, and in that time has grown to be the standard to which memory foam mattresses are held against. Their many years of study and the growth in technology has helped them better meet the needs of the consumer through their patented, innovative TEMPUR material. This foam creation tops the entirety of their mattress lines, and claims to provide a individual sleep experience through its support of weight, shape, and temperature control.
The company doesn’t share their secret TEMPUR foam formula with the public, but it is an open celled viscoelastic polyurethane foam that is claimed to be drastically different than traditional memory foams in that it conforms and shapes to your body without sacrificing support and comfort.
I recently spent some time in a mattress store with the intent to buy a new mattress, and I thought it would be worthwhile to at least check them out. I, personally, could not tell the difference between the TEMPUR products and other memory foams being marketed. If I had the time for sleep trials perhaps there would have been a noticeable difference, but it was not initially apparent. The price tag difference, however, was obvious. Construction
Like all the other mattresses produced by TEMPUR, they are layered according to their materials and softness levels. Since the Cloud Supreme is a medium soft to soft top, it boasts two, two inch layers, followed by a seven inch, general foam, airbase flow system to help channel heat and air, and which also serves as a support to the above mentioned layer.
Technically what you are getting is four inches of patented TEMPUR foam and seven inches of a base foam materials topped by a high-loft, super stretchy cover created with moisture wicking threads. The first two inches is your plush, comfort layer, and is made out of a super soft TEMPER-ES foam that has a 4.1 lbs/cu ft density. This is supposed to be super responsive to your weight and act as a cushioning response layer. The next two inches support the above layer, and help cradle your weight and distribute weight outwards, rather than down to create that famous ‘sleeping on a cloud’ feel so often bragged about.
High density foams cost more, but are overall more durable, especially for heavier body types. Unfortunately TEMPUR-Pedic doesn’t share this information on their website and you have to be dependent on outside sampling tests to determine density loads. For example, competitors sell higher density foam mattresses for fractions of the cost.
This leads to the question of if it is truly a superior product in comparison to other memory foam mattresses on the market. In my own showroom trials, I couldn’t notice a difference. Since the density of the foam is only 4.1, which is not bad, it certainly isn’t as high quality to reflect the price you are paying.
Comfort
This is a popular model for side sleepers due to the relief the memory foams provides from pressure points. The softer surface helps provide a cradle for heavier parts of the body and allows for spinal support and health.

Motion transfer is also greatly reduced, and the wine glass test became a popular way to gauge movement across mattress tops due to this design. Reviewers from multiple online distributors are mostly positive in their reviews, although they are not always greatly detailed as to their reasoning. Details seem to more prevalent in the criticism sections as it is explained exactly why the buyer disliked the product.
Positive reviews surround the comfort of their night’s sleep due to the weightless feel, and the ‘enveloping’ sink of the foam as you lay on it. Since pressure points are supposed to be dispersed, there have been many buyers who praise their lack of pain when they rise each morning, and a lack of tossing and turning to find a comfortable position.
Criticism surrounds a general discomfort and issues with heat transfer (detailed below). Of course each body is different. No two shapes and weights are going to be exactly the same, and when you add in past injuries that affect comfort and preferences- each person will have individual needs for a decent night’s rest. Discomfort surrounds stomach sleepers, heavier body types that are not fully supported by the top 4 inches, and an increase in pressure points causing back and shoulder pain. There were also concerns of the mattress creating sinks after only a few months explained as a natural settling of materials.
Densities of foam effect this process, and as the foam becomes more compacted, the less likely it is to ‘bounce’ back to shape easily, which can create impressions within the foam layers. Lower densities will compact more easily over time which may affect your overall comfort. Higher densities have a longer life and can support more weight over time.
Heat Retention
The SmartClimate system built into the mattress cover is created with moisture wicking fibers that help move body heat away from the body. This is supposed to create the coolest sleep possible, but since the company has another line of mattresses that addresses ‘hot’ sleepers, they definitely have further technology to keep you cool at night.
TEMPUR-Pedic has a pretty high complaint rate of heat retention in comparison to other competitive brands, and this model in particular seems to be too hot for heavier body types due to how the foam surrounds the body, creating less breathability. It would seem the softer the top, the more issues that arise with this particular problem., understandably so.
Maintenance, Care, and Warranty
The 10 year warranty that each mattress is sold with is a limited warranty that covers limited repairs. It should be looked over carefully by consumers to determine their responsibilities surrounding replacement or repair.
Liquids and foam mattresses DO NOT MIX well, so it is suggested to provide a water-proof mattress cover to top the included cover that zips onto the mattress itself. Noticeable liquid damage voids the warranty, and can cause pitting, and a general breakdown of the materials.
The included cover is said to be washer safe on cold and gentle, but to be safe, it is suggested to hand wash and line dry. Any spills on the cover or mattress should be blotted up immediately and spot cleaned with a mild soap and water.
Rotation of any mattress is highly recommended to keep a uniform settling of material to take place over the life of your purchase. You also should provide a solid base, or some sort of flat, supportive structure under your mattress. TEMPUR-Pedic sells a base to fit each model as well. Traditional box springs do not provide the support needed and may also void the warranty.
