TEMPUR-Pedic Cloud Elite Mattress

The extra layer of plush TEMPUR material is what helps define TEMPUR-Pedic’s Cloud foam collection created to address a growing want for softer foam mattress sleeping surfaces. Introduced in 2009, the Cloud series was created focused towards side and combination sleepers to help disperse pressure points and maintain spinal alignment without sacrificing the slow, soft sink associated with memory foam. This particular model falls in the second to last in softness of the six mattresses available in this series.

An EasyRefresh, zip off cover that incorporates a SmartClimate system to help keep your rest cool, is included as your first layer of comfort. This is followed by a series of layers to help support weight, and dissipate heat through the night. The Cloud series is among the least expensive of their mattress choices, but are still considered one of the more expensive choice among comparative competition.

Available in a twin long, queen, king, split king, CA king, and split CA king sizes, it can be used with any TEMPUR-Pedic foundation bases, including the UP and ERGO designs. Although these are optional, they are suggested to keep your mattress within warranty. Fabrics on both mattress and bases are hypoallergenic and helps to deter dust mites and microorganisms.

Features & Benefits

TEMPUR-Pedic has been in business since 1992 and emerged in the mattress industry as a leading innovative idea to change the way consumers viewed their night’s rest. With the introduction of new technology- memory foam, once a patented product used in NASA’s space programs, became a new standard for sleep products. Their claims to provide a unique, individualized sleep experience was achieved through their advancement of body support and temperature control.

The top secret TEMPUR foam product that is featured in the top layers of every mattress offered, is an open celled viscoelastic polyurethane foam to provide airflow and comfort. However, with technological advancements and emerging online companies, TEMPUR-pedic has been getting a bit of competition to stay a leading brand in the mattress industry and is constantly reassessing their product line to meet consumer needs.

Although their claims surround having the leading comfort in memory foam mattresses, try this out for yourself at a local mattress showroom. In doing so recently I was impressed with the initial comfort, but could find little to no difference amongst leading competitors. Anything noticeable was reflected in the price tag however, since TEMPUR products are generally twice as expensive as the competition.

Construction

TEMPUR mattresses use a layered construction to help provide an increase in airflow and meet customer demands for varying surface comforts without sacrificing support. As one of the more plush tops offered by the company, the Cloud Elite has four layers of differing foam materials to help alleviate pressure points, provide support, increase airflow, and reduce transfer movement.

Your first layer contact is with the SmartClimate system cover that helps wick away moisture and heat from your body to transfer it through the foam layers so it dissipates more easily for a cooler night’s sleep. The top 2.4 inches is a 4.1 lb density foam TEMPUR-ES (extra soft) layer to provide the plush factor, which is then supported by another 2.4 TEMPUR layer that weighs in at 5.25lbs to provide the support and weight distribution. The bottom two layers, at 2.75 and 4.9 inches respectively, are a general poly foam to provide the support for the above layers. The layers are used to create better air flow.

Foam Density Explained

I should note that finding the densities of the TEMPUR foams are quite challenging as the company has little to no transparency concerning this. Despite this, the densities mentioned above are considered a good weight for the product, and should be both supportive and fairly long lasting. This is important because foam densities help determine the quality of your product.

The higher the density, the longer it will both last and handle applied weight over time. Lower density foams have a tendency to create a permanent ‘sink’ through the years, creating pressure points and issues with sleep quality. But higher densities better distribute weight and compress less easily, making it a good choice for both consistent support and pressure reduction.

Issues surrounding the TEMPUR mattresses surround not the quality of the foam used, but more so the cost of foam which has been driven down through product competition. You can often find similar mattresses boasting foams of equal, or better quality, for a fraction of the TEMPUR-pedic price.

Comfort

This stiff competition has resulted in TEMPUR-Pedic constantly evolving their product line to fit the needs of the consumer, and so therefor it still ranks as a top producer of memory foam mattresses. When the company emerged in the early 1990’s, it was an innovative measure to use anything other than spring coils it the construction of mattresses. They literally redefined mattress comfort and revolutionized and individualized sleep with the use of memory foam that contoured to your body and reduced pressure points.

These claims continue today due to their layering techniques that provide differing surface softness levels to meet the varying market, and the Cloud Elite is simply one of the multiple choices available for those seeking a softer surface. Although not many reviews exist of this particular mattress than on their website- without going into detail, those that do exist consistently praise the comfort level and lack of pressure points it provides.

Complaints surround the brand in general about sleeping hot, or not providing enough support surrounding the softer mattress surfaces. The company also claims that soft foam occasionally takes a few weeks to take on the ‘form’ of the sleeper in order to get the full effects of the weightless sleep feeling. However this also has provided some complaints surrounding too much of a difference for certain consumers.

Heat Retention

Even though softer, more body encompassing foams can create heat retention, TEMPUR-Pedic attempts to alleviate these issues using a combination of their SmartClimate, moisture wicking fibers woven into the mattress cover, and multiple layers of open-cell TEMPUR foams to create air flow and a draw of heat away from the body.

As previously mentioned, there is a general complaint about how hot the TEMPUR brand sleeps. This is generally typical of many memory foams, especially the softer surfaces.

Maintenance, Care, and Warranty

All TEMPUR mattresses come with a limited 10-year full replacement warranty that covers limited replacement or repair that covers product defects. This is subject to it being sold directly from TEMPUR-Pedic or through an authorized dealer, and does have a few stipulations – one being it is used on a proper, approved platform.

The included cover is both machine and dryer safe, although it should be treated with care to keep from damaging the cooling fibers that are woven in. Spills should also be immediately blotted up as liquids and foam mattresses in general do not mix as it can breakdown the cellular structure of the material. Because of this, a water-proof mattress protector is suggested as the warranty will be voided with noticeable stains or spills.

Rotating your mattress is always good practice as well to keep an even distribution of weight across the surface and to keep too much compression from occurring in only one spot.

A 90 day sleep trial is also available for credit approved customer. After 30 days of sleep the company will attempt to work with you concerning your issues, and if they are unable to you may return the mattress for a full refund minus the shipping costs.

TEMPUR-Pedic Promise

After 25 years of business, The TEMPUR-Pedic company does know their mattress constructions and continues to expand their products to include many bedding options and other accessories. They consider their materials superior in the business and have held to their promise a personalized night’s sleep. Because of this they are still recognized as leaders in the industry, although they have been recently been getting some stiff competition.

Consumer Proof

The many authorized dealers that sell the TEMPUR-Pedic products share lists of their reviews, and rate each mattress according to how well it sells. TEMPUR-Pedic also has a database of thousands of consumer ratings of their many products, many devoid of detail however.

The Cloud Elite, as mentioned, has very few reviews overall since it falls into the soft-extra soft category and seems to be outsold by either softer or more firm versions of the TEMPUR-Cloud line.

Conclusion

Of the many choices offered by the TEMPUR-Pedic company, the Cloud series of mattresses are the softest sleeping surfaces offered. Focused on combination and side-sleepers, the layered construction provides the famous memory foam ‘hug’ while providing the spinal support needed for sleep health. The TEMPUR-Pedic Cloud Elite is the second softest version offered, and seems comparable in reviews to others found within this product line.

Praise is given to the comfort level and support provided, but some complaints exist surrounding the heat and overall longevity of the mattress surface as heavier bodies seem to find less comfort over time. Concerns also surround the amount of quality foams being used in comparison to many of the leading competitors, who are starting to drastically undercut the TEMPUR quality with equal or better materials for fractions of the cost.
