Experience counts, and Simmons has been in the mattress industry since 1900. I was impressed to learn that they jumped on board when they developed intrigue toward the invention of the very first wrapped coil spring in the same year they were founded. They recognized an inefficiency… every coil was being produced by hand.

Simmons jumped into action and put their leading engineer in charge of the development of the Simmons Pocketed Coil spring machine. Simmons has continually led the way in the mattress industry as they also:

-Invented a unique hybrid technology by fusing pocketed coil springs and memory foam

-Introduced the king and queen-size mattress back in the 1950’s

A Look Inside the Lydia Manor III Extra Firm Mattress

Let’s start off with a look at the layer construction. The total mattress thickness is 13 inches, and it starts off with the quilted cover.

The Quilted Cover

The design is very elegant, and the stretch-knit fabric provides a fire-resistant barrier to the inner components. Within the quilted cover are the first three layers starting with the DualCool Technology Fiber. This soft and supple material is enhanced with silver to prevent stains and odors to keep your mattress fresh. We shed around a fifth of an ounce of skin every week. Over the course of the life of a mattress that lasts ten years, that’s 6 ½ pounds of dead skin. Throw in a sleep partner, you’re looking at 13 pounds.

As if that weren’t gross enough, mites love warm, moist environments, and they feed off of dead skin cells. This makes your mattress the perfect place for them to establish roots. The DualCool Technology Fiber helps keep your it fresh, making your sleep surface less attractive to these subtle parasites.

Moving on, the one inch layer of AirCool Foam is a channeled surface that adds a degree of softness and allows for proper airflow to help your mattress breathe. The quilted cover ends with a half inch of Comfort Foam designed for high quality comfort in a firm setting.

The Comfort Layers

Next we move into the the actual comfort zone of the mattress, and it kicks off with another inch of Comfort foam followed by the addition of 490 coils strategically located in the center third of the mattress to provide enhanced contour for proper back support. If you carry a lot of weight and/or suffer with back pain, this can be very helpful in achieving comfort through the night and reducing aches and pains that haunt you all day.

The next half inch is geared toward keeping your temperature low with a layer of AirCool Gel Memory Foam. Not only does it keep you sleeping cool, but it also promotes ease in movement and much needed pressure relief.

Correct Back Support System

Finally, we transition into the Correct Back Support System. It works to stabilize body weight and maintain proper spinal alignment. The individually-wrapped Beautyrest pocketed coils offer conforming support and motion isolation, and the final inch of Energy Foam is durable enough to withstand the coils above and creates a supportive foundation.

Mattress Performance

This particular layer construction creates that feeling you’re floating on top of the mattress. While the layer of AirCool Foam found at the very top of the layer construction adds some plushness, it only comprises about eight percent of the total thickness. It does to a good job at preventing this firm product from feeling like you’re lying on the floor, but it still provides that highly supportive surface needed by people with back pain.

Lying on my side, I am noticing some pressure points in my shoulder and hip areas. If you’re a side sleeper, this may not be the best fit for you. However, flipping over on my stomach, I find it to be very accomodating. I prefer a plush mattress. Firmness and Sinkage Expectations

So, just how firm is extra firm? Let’s take a look. While we don’t have access to the indentation load deflection of the foam layers, we do get a look at the coil gauge in the support zone. Fifteen is very plush, and 12 is very firm, so you’d think it would be rated closer to 12. In fact, the coil gauge actually weighs in at 13.75.

This is right around a medium firmness in terms of coil gauge, so we can reasonably conclude that the ILDs of the foams are high, especially as we get closer to the base. On a typical medium mattress, my body weight sinks in about 6 ½ inches when I stand on it. On the Simmons Beautyrest Silver Lydia Manor III extra firm mattress, I sink in just right around 5 ½ inches. This really goes to show just how much more firm this product is than a medium. So, when Simmons says this product is extra firm, they aren’t exaggerating.

If you’re in the market for a firmness that’s more on the rock solid level, this isn’t going to be what you’re looking for. However, I would suspect it will cater the needs of the average person with a firm setting in mind.

Motion Transfer Reduction

Traditional innerspring products were bad about transferring motion. This is especially true of continuous coil units. I found it interesting that Simmons recognized the benefit of individual wrapping when the concept first hit the market over a century ago.

They’ve had plenty of time to perfect their take on the wrapped coil, and you can watch in our video review above that this product does a great job at absorbing motion at the point of impact. This is a very important aspect for sleep partners. I found the placement of the memory foam beneath the innersprings to be unique as this type of material is often found in the comfort layers. Visco foam is well-known for absorbing motion, but it is also notorious for causing excessive sinkage and hot sleeping. In the case of the Lydia Manor extra firm mattress, this combination does a great job at keeping motion isolation low without compromising on bounce.

Above Average in Heat Transfer Capabilities

Cool sleeping is important. Nobody wants to wake up sweaty and hot, and you need your body temperature to drop slightly to enter into REM sleep. This product incorporates four primary techniques to keep you sleeping cool:

    Coils that breathe naturally

    AirCool Foam in the quilted cover

    DualCool fibers in the cover

    AirCool Gel Memory Foam in the bottom of the comfort layer

A large portion of the total 13 inches of this product puts a focus on cool sleep. To put it to the test, I lied on this product for a half hour like I do with all mattresses I review to see how long it takes to cool back down to a controlled room temperature. This process takes an average of 10 minutes, and, in the case of the Lydia Manor III extra firm, it took 8 ½. This tells me that Simmons’ efforts were effective, and I don’t anticipate you’ll have any issues with hot sleeping on this product.

Edge Support

A firm mattress typically does a good job at offering edge support, especially when it contains a solid innerspring unit. Throw in the fact that Simmons also includes 360 degree, four inch ventilated AirCool BeautyEdge technology to further reinforce the outer borders of your sleep surface, and you’ve got some pretty solid edge support.

This makes it really easy to get in and out of bed. You can see how well this mattress does supporting me both sitting and lying on the edge. On the very corner, there is often a lack of edge support. Products made entirely of foam often bottom out, but there is adequate support with the Lydia Manor extra firm mattress. If you rely heavily on edge support and/or have mobility issues, I think you’ll enjoy what this product has to offer.

Durability Expectations

Let’s talk for a moment about this product’s durability expectations. I have read more than one review complaining that the product is prone to the development of sagging after only a short time of ownership. I think it’s worth pointing out that the Lydia Manor III incorporated changes that took sagging into consideration. The previous model did not include features like the BackCare Support System in the center third of the mattress. I think it’s entirely possible some of these claims are actually being made about the Lydia Manor II.

Although we don’t have access to the densities of the foams, we can get an idea of durability through the coil count. Bare minimum for a queen product before durability becomes a real concern is 400. This product has 815, not to mention the additional 490 coils in the center third of the comfort layer. This gives me more confidence of the product lasting. And, let’s not forget the fact that efforts are made to keep dust mites at bay. This can go a long way in keeping your mattress intact.

Maintenance, Protection, Care and Warranty

There’s certainly no shortage of mattress companies out there. Since the bed-in-a-box concept has taken off, it seems like there’s a new brand being introduced every day. This is great for consumers because it allows for plenty of options. However, this means there are many newer companies just getting started. Our Final Verdict

In a nutshell, I think this product is definitely worth considering if you’re on the lookout for a firm mattress, carry a lot of weight, or are a stomach sleeper. Its sophisticated design and time-tested technologies offer precise support and contour targeted toward proper alignment. Although it is pretty firm, the gel foam offers a great ratio of soothing comfort and contour to provide a very unique and balanced feel. I think the multiple efforts to keep the mattress sleeping cool were successful, and the addition of silver in the first layer can go a long way in keeping your sleep hygienic. If you’re a side sleeper carrying average to heavy weight, you may struggle with excessive pressure points in the shoulders and hips. The supplemental purchase of a mattress topper would be highly advised.
