Serta iComfort Mattress Reviews

by | Mattress | 1 comment

The iComfort sleep system is Serta’s answer to the industry’s demand of a memory foam mattress that doesn’t run hot in the middle of the night. They call it their most advanced sleeping system to date, and describe a number of uniquely innovative features that justify this claim.

On the surface, it looks like this is a high end brand that should meet the needs of sensitive sleepers who want conforming support from their bed without having to deal with excessive heating, but when you’re making an investment this big, it is good to know what you’re getting into from someone other than the manufacturer.

I’ve written this guide to help you with precisely that, discussing the various aspects of this lineup in detail, and supplementing the discussion with feedback from users as well as select Serta iComfort reviews of my own.

Standout Features Of The iComfort Lineup

Technological Innovations

Triple Effects™ Gel Memory Foam

Triple Effects™ Gel Memory Foam

This gel infused memory foam serves three purposes: pressure point relief, support for spinal alignment, and temperature regulation.

Cool Action™ Gel Memory Foam

Cool Action™ Gel Memory Foam

This is Serta’s original gel memory foam that employs tiny gel beads for specialized support, pressure relief and thermal dissipation. Its latest iteration incorporates EverTemp™ technology to maximize its effectiveness in a wide range of temperature and humidity ranges.

EverCool® Plus Memory Foam

EverCool® Plus Memory Foam

This is an open cell viscoelastic foam intended to provide cradling support to your body while also maintaining adequate heat dissipation. The newest version uses EverTemp™ technology to work reliably over a wider range of environmental conditions.

Serta PillowSoft™ Foam

PillowSoft™ Foam

This is an extra-soft polyfoam that is intended to boost the cushioning support of the comfort layer of iComfort mattresses.

Deep Reaction™ Memory Foam

Deep Reaction™ Memory Foam

This is a firmer variety of memory foam that provides a heftier feel compared to the typically soft, sinking viscoelastic mattresses in the market, and is therefore used in luxury firm or extra firm models.

ActivBalance™ Support Foam

ActivBalance™ Support Foam

This layer of gel-infused polyfoam features a unique surface (almost egg crate like) that lets it boost the responsiveness of the ‘dead support’ memory foam layers. Its design allows it to enhance air flow.

TempActiv™ Gel Memory Foam

TempActivTM Technology

This is actually a two part mechanism, with the first being a gel foam that uses millions of temperature regulating gel beads combined with another layer of gel for support. These gel beads enable the mattress to take heat away from your body and dissipate it effectively while also boosting support.

The second is a cover material that has a dedicated thermal regulation mechanism built into its fabric, providing a surface that feels cool at the first touch. It works in conjunction with the gel memory foam to provide superior cooling throughout your sleep.

Air Suspension™ Technology

Air Suspension Technology

This is an elastic polymer layer that is intended to improve air flow while also offering bouncy support to create a moderately firm feel even in viscoelastic foam mattresses. It features reinforced edges to minimize edge roll off issues.

Ultimate Edge® Foam Support Core

Ultimate Edge Foam Support Core

The polyurethane support layer that Serta uses for the iComfort line features a strengthened edge to reduce roll off problems.

For the hybrid models, the support system is made out of Duet® Coil innersprings – these are carefully positioned coils designed to provide deep support and comfort for your body.

Multiple Firmness Options

iComfort mattress models with varying degrees of firmness are available to cater to the needs of sleepers with different tastes. Serta combines various types of memory foam and regular polyfoam to achieve the different overall feels.

Compatibility With Motion Collection Adjustable Foundations

All iComfort mattresses are designed to work with Serta’s own adjustable foundations – these allow you to change the profile of the bed so you can lie down, sit, and rest your back in an inclined position as needed.

These foundations need mattresses that can profile themselves accordingly, and often require the customer to spend time verifying the compatibility of their mattress with the foundation (or in reverse). With iComfort mattresses, you have the surety that you can set up a perfectly compatible adjustable iComfort bed configuration since both the mattress and the foundation will be from the same manufacturer.

120-Day In-Home Trial

Serta has partnered with various retailers to offer a generous trial program that lets you return / exchange the iComfort mattress within 120 days of purchase. You have to use it for at least 30 days, and if you’re not satisfied with its performance you can bring it back to the retailer.

Make sure that you check with the retailer beforehand whether they are part of this policy or not.

10 Year Limited Warranty

Serta maintains that their products are built to the highest of standards inside the United States, and that they have a strict QA program. To back up this claim, they offer a 10 year limited warranty on their iComfort mattresses.

However, it should be noted that they make a distinction between defects and discomfort i.e. they won’t give you a replacement if you realize, after using the mattress for a few months, that its firmness level does not fit your requirements.

In other words, you should be careful about the firmness (or plushness) at the time of purchase, and always take into account the fact that mattresses do experience some softening during the first few months.

Third Party Certifications

iComfort mattresses use only CertiPUR-US certified foams that are guaranteed to be free of harmful chemical substances that can compromise both your health and the quality of air in the bedroom. Furthermore, the iComfort lineup has won the Consumer’s Digest Best Buy for six years straight, and the Women’s Choice Award for mattresses for four years straight.

Comfort

As far as overall comfort goes, between the ability to choose from a multitude of firmness options, and the fact that both pure memory foam and hybrid models are available, there is a very good chance you’ll end up with a mattress that suits your needs in terms of support, conformity and pressure relief.

This is reflected in the generally positive feedback from the users about both the memory foam and hybrid models, but make sure you read about the durability concerns (discussed below) before you make up your mind.

Motion Isolation

iComfort mattresses yield superb motion separation, just like all other viscoelastic foam based products. The hybrid models use pocketed springs in the base, which are similarly known for their point elasticity. Motion isolation is important for people who share their bed with a partner, and don’t like to be woken up in the middle of the night because of the other person’s movements.

Some of the models also come with supporting edges to keep the sleeper from rolling out of bed.

Temperature

Thanks to the TempActiv™ cooling mechanism used by the manufacturer, iComfort mattresses run considerably cooler than the typical memory foam mattress.

Off Gassing Concerns

Memory foam mattress are notorious for emitting an irritating odor for the first few weeks of use. Having scoured dozens of user reviews, I’ve deduced that this isn’t a major issue with the iComfort line, since there were minimal complaints regarding this problem.

Of course, some of the more sensitive sleepers will still be able to identify the odor, but since the materials used are approved by CertiPUR-US, you can at least be assured that they won’t adversely affect your health.

Pricing

Serta iComfort is somewhat less pricey compared to competitors such as Simmons Comforpedic, and Tempurpedic. However, it is still expensive enough to make you feel cheated if the mattress starts failing a few years in (a distinct problem that I noted in many consumer reviews).

Durability

Although the manufacturer claims to use only the highest quality materials to make the iComfort line, it has received numerous complaints of sagging, with the process starting in a period ranging from the first few months to the first few years.

Since the manufacturer uses 4 lb/cu.ft. memory foam in the comfort layer, it is a safe assumption that this is the cause behind the sagging, as this density is a bit stingy for a viscoelastic foam mattress. I would recommend that bulky individuals consider the innerspring models with a firmer rating to get the most life out of their iComfort mattress, or stick to some other brand altogether.

Savant III Plush

Specs

  • Price (Queen): $1,799
  • Sizes Available: Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Firmness Level: Plush
  • Comfort Layer: 2” EverCool Plus Memory Foam, 1” PillowSoft Foam, 2” EverFeel TripleEffects Gel Foam
  • Support Layer: 6” polyfoam
  • Overall Height: 12”

The latest iteration has a comfort layer incorporating a 2” layer of EverCool® Plus Memory Foam, a 1” layer of Serta® PillowSoft® Foam, and 2” EverFeel® Triple Effects™ Gel Foam. The multiple layers of viscoelastic foam, with a 1” regular foam layer sandwiched between them, combine to create a plush, sinking surface feel that doesn’t deviate much from your body temperature, as noted by several satisfied users.

The base consists of a 6” layer of regular polyfoam for supporting the entire mass of your body even as the memory foam layers contour around it to create a neutral spinal position.

Most users have reported a very relaxing, comforting sleeping experience with this mattress, but it should be noted that Serta has used 4 lbs./cu.ft. memory foam that won’t last very long, especially if it is subjected to stress by a bulky individual.

R

Pros

  • Soft, conforming support.
  • Doesn’t heat up at night.
  • Decent deep support.
Q

Cons

  • Not durable.

The Savant is one of Serta’s most popular offerings, and this variant is a plush memory foam mattress that offers conforming support optimized for side sleepers.

Prodigy III

Specs

  • Price (Queen): $2,299
  • Sizes Available: Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Firmness Level: Medium-Soft
  • Comfort Layer: 2” EverFeel Triple Effects Gel Memory Foam, 1” Cool Action Gel Memory Foam, 2” EverCool Plus Memory Foam, 1” PillowSoft Foam
  • Support Layer: 6” polyfoam
  • Overall Height: 14″

The comfort layer comprises of three different layers of memory foams: 2” of EverFeel Triple Effects Gel Foam on top, followed by a 1” layer of Cool Action Gel Foam, then a 2” layer of EverCool Plus Memory Foam, and at the end, a 1” layer of PillowSoft polyfoam.

The addition of Cool Action Gel Foam makes this model a bit more firm in comparison with the wholly plush offerings such as the Savant III I’ve reviewed above. That said, it is still quite soft – and cool, contouring pain relief and support is what it gets praised for the most.

It also uses a base consisting of 6” polyfoam, with a net height of about 14”. Keep in mind that the added height of the comfort layer may reduce the supportive role of the 6” polyfoam layer, which in turn may accelerate the breakdown of the comfort layer as it bears the brunt of your body.

R

Pros

  • Moderately soft cradling surface with compressive deep support.
  • Decent thermal dissipation.
  • Superb pain relief.
Q

Cons

  • Potential durability problems due to excessive height of comfort layer.

The Prodigy III is a medium firm mattress meant for consumers who prefer a cradling surface that is backed by deep support.

Applause II Firm

Specs

  • Price (Queen): $1,299
  • Sizes Available: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Firmness Level: Medium-Soft
  • Quilt Layer: FireBlocker Fiber, Pillo-Fill, 0.5” PillowSoft Foam, 0.5” Support Foam
  • Comfort Layer: 1” polyfoam, 0.5” EverFeel Triple Effects Gel Memory Foam
  • Support Layer: 952 Duet Pocketed Coil; Polyfoam Encasement
  • Overall Height: 12”

This hybrid mattress captures the feel of a conventional firm innerspring while also providing the conforming surface support of memory foam. It is a decent upgrade for people who find standard innerspring mattresses too hard on their backs, but still want a degree of stiffness to alleviate their back pain.
The Applause Firm has a top most quilt layer consisting of FireBlocker Fiber, fiber fill and a couple of polyfoam layers, to provide an initially soft surface feel. The comfort layer is pretty minimal – to keep the overall feel firm of course; it is a mere 1” polyfoam layer backed by 0.5” EverFeel Triple Effects Gel Foam to provide a semblance of contouring.
The support system comprises of 952 of Serta’s signature Duet Edge pocketed coils covered by a polyfoam layer – these are responsible for the traditionally firm feel characteristic of innersprings. The pain relieving capability of the Applause II has been praised by chronic back pain patients who were unable find it in predominantly soft mattresses.

R

Pros

  • Firm support with a degree of conformity.
  • Fire retardant quilted layer.
  • Minimal use of low density memory foam in the comfort layer enhances durability.
  • Relatively inexpensive.
Q

Cons

  • None.

It is a decent upgrade for people who find standard innerspring mattresses too hard on their backs, but still want a degree of stiffness to alleviate their back pain.

F700 SmartSupport™

Specs

  • Price (Queen): $3,499
  • Sizes Available: Twin XL, Queen, King, California King
  • Firmness Level: Cushion-Firm
  • Comfort Layer: 2” EverFeel Triple Effects Gel Memory Foam, 1” Cool Action Gel Memory Foam, 1” PillowSoft Foam, 1” EverFeel Triple Effects Gel Memory Foam, SmartSuppot Memory Coil System, 1” PillowSoft Foam
  • Support Layer: 6” polyfoam
  • Overall Height: 14”

The F700 SmartSupport is the most advanced memory foam mattress that Serta has to offer, boasting a an unusually firm comfort level for a memory foam product, which makes it suitable for people who find typical viscoelastic mattresses too soft, and typical innerspring products too firm, for their tastes.

One notable aspect of the F700 is that it incorporates dual layers of Serta’s EverFeel Triple Effects Gel Memory Foam and PillowSoft Foam – this lets it achieve a level of cushioning firmness that is unorthodox for memory foam, but nevertheless lets you enjoy contouring in a manner that is still softer than regular pocket springs.

Some of the firmness may also be attributed to the proprietary SmartSupport Memory Coil System: this uses tiny mini coils covered above and below by viscoelastic foam. These mini coils create a slow reacting sleeping surface that enhances conformity without the associated springiness of traditional pocketed coils.

The support layer is identical to the other memory foam offerings – about 6”, leaving a rather lofty 8” for the comfort layer. However, because of the presence of the mini coils in between the memory foam layers and the main support layer, some of the stress that would otherwise be directly exerted on the softer comfort layer is alleviated, so deterioration doesn’t set in as quickly as other products with deep layers of low density viscoelastic foam on top.

R

Pros

  • Unique combination of high firmness yet contouring support.
  • Mini coil layer enhances durability in spite of deep comfort layer.
Q

Cons

  • Very expensive.

Suitable for people who find typical viscoelastic mattresses too soft, and typical innerspring products too firm, for their tastes.

Expertise Firm

Specs

  • Price (Queen): $1,999
  • Sizes Available: Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Firmness Level: Firm
  • Quilt Layer: FireBlocker Fiber, Pillo-Fill, 1.5” PillowSoft Foam
  • Comfort Layer: 2” EverFeel Triple Effects Gel Memory Foam, 1” Serta Support Foam
  • Support Layer: 1008 Duet Pocket Coil; Polyfoam Encasement
  • Overall Height: 14.5”

Like the Applause II, it has a quilt layer consisting of fire retardant fiber, fiber fill and soft polyfoam – except in this model, there’s only a single 1.5” layer of PillowSoft Foam to achieve a firmer surface feel. Underneath, there’s a comfort layer made up of 2” Triple Effect Gel Memory Foam combined with 1” Serta Support Foam.

The comfort layer offers marginal cushioning and then gives way to a support core comprised of 1008 Duet Elite pocketed coils that are encased in polyfoam. This layer yields the firm, springy and responsive support that we expect from traditional innerspring mattresses.

Since this mattress uses a greater amount of low density polyfoam and viscoelastic foam in its upper layers, it might not effectively transmit most of the pressure to the deeper support core, which can lead to quicker degradation of the topmost layer i.e. sagging. For this reason, I would advise bulkier individuals to go with an alternative.

R

Pros

  • Traditional firm innerspring feel with marginal cushioning.
  • Fire retardant quilted layer.
  • Moderately inexpensive.
Q

Cons

  • Presence of low density polyfoam and viscoelastic foam in top layers may compromise durability.

This hybrid mattress is designed for sleepers who prefer a traditionally firm and springy feel, but with slight cushioning for their body as well.

Conclusion

Now that you’ve reached the end of this guide, you’ll see that Serta’s claims of innovating viscoelastic foam technology in its iComfort sleep system, to make it as cool as possible, definitely hold up. The best part is that they have memory foam varieties that have effective cooling even at relatively inexpensive price points.

However, it can also not be neglected that the iComfort series has major issues with durability, particularly where there memory foam models are concerned. They use lower density foams (presumably to keep their products cheaper than the competition), but this does sacrifice some of the hardiness of the final product, and the effects are most conspicuous with partners and / or weighty sleepers.

For this reason, I’ll advise heavier individuals to stick with the firmer versions of hybrid models with reduced heights that let the weight be effectively transmitted to the pocketed springs so the comfort layer does not take much of a beating – one such model is the Applause II Firm mattress that’s been discussed above.

For lighter weight, single sleepers though, there is plenty to choose from in the memory foam models too: my personal favorite is the Prodigy III with its middling comfort feel – it packs multiple layers of ventilated and / or gel infused memory foam, yielding both superb contouring and a cool sleeping experience, at a price that is comparatively cheaper than rival brands.
