Our Tranquility Weighted Blanket Review

Candace Osmond

Weighted blankets have gained a lot of fans over the past years, mostly because people never believe that inducing a state of calm was possible by using one of the most unthinkable objects that are part of our daily lives: a blanket. This type of blanket is all about pushing the right buttons in order to trigger the right mechanisms of one’s nervous system, so we’re going to focus on a very convenient, affordable, but truly beneficial model: the Tranquility weighted blanket.

A Closer Look at the Tranquility Weighted Blanket

What started out as a Target product is now available in a lot of different online and offline stores. The Tranquility blanket is probably one of the most affordable weighted blankets on the market, which ticks all the right boxes to become one of your favorite ones as well.

It is a product that focuses on the benefit brought by deep pressure stimulation, a technique with proven medical and psychological benefits, tested and approved by thousands of customers so far. Unlike some of its competitors, the Tranquility blanket focuses on results rather than shoving specifications down the buyer’s throat.

Above everything else, it’s a product that eliminates all the fancy components that make it difficult to understand why you’re spending hundreds of dollars on a weighted blanket, and is much more focused on giving you the right tools to get rid of anxiety, stress, pain, and other things that could keep you up at night.

Pros:

  • Available in three weight options.
  • Suitable for teens.
  • Noise-free glass beads fill.
  • It doesn’t contain plastic.
  • Very convenient price.
  • Easy to carry around.
  • Comfortable when switching sleeping positions.

Cons:

  • Can’t be machine washed.
  • Polyester isn’t everyone’s fabric of choice.
  • No really big size available.

Available Sizes

Currently, the Tranquility blanket is only available in three sizing and weight options:

  • There are 10 lbs. blanket, which measures 50 x 60 inches.
  • You have the 12 lbs. blanket, which measures 48 x 72 inches.
  • The biggest and heaviest blanket weighs 18 lbs. and measures 48 x 72 inches.

Generally speaking, a weighted blanket can have anywhere between five to 30 pounds, so you’re probably wondering how to pick the right one for you. The general consensus is that a weighted blanket should have ten percent of your total body weight. That means that if you weigh 120 pounds, you are best matched with the 12 lbs. Tranquility blanket.

However, children and older adults should be matched with a weighted pillow that’s ten percent of their weight, plus another one or two pounds. It’s important to take this rule into consideration if you want to really enjoy the benefits that this kind of product provides.

But what happens when you’re in between sizes? Let’s say you weigh 110 pounds, but you can’t find an 11 lbs. blanket. In this case, it wouldn’t hurt to choose the next highest options, but people who have a frail body can also go down. If you can bear the weight, choose the 12 lbs. blanket. If not, go with the 10 lbs. one instead.

Materials & Construction

Regardless of the weight option that you go with, your Tranquility blankets all have the same specifications, which also include the same materials. The cover of each blanket is made entirely from polyester, having a smooth texture all across the surface of the product.

Each of the blankets is filled with glass beads, which provides a number of benefits compared to other types of weighted blanket fills. Being the smallest type of weighted blanket fill, glass beads have like sugar-type of texture.

Since they are smaller compared to poly pellets, they sit densely inside your Tranquility blanket. This makes the blanket less bulky compared to those filled with other materials and this benefits you in two ways:

  • If the blanket is not bulky, you will find it easier to switch between different sleeping positions without feeling discomfort, which is important because the weight itself is a factor that may take some time getting used to.
  • A bulky blanket will tend to overheat, and this is something you want to avoid because the main purpose of a weighted blanket isn’t to keep you warm. You don’t want a blanket that you use during the winter, but feel uncomfortably hot during the summer.

But the benefits of using a glass beads weighted blanket like this Tranquility one don’t stop there. Consider the fact that you’re using a product which isn’t filled with plastic, which means that it’s less likely to emit a specific odor when unboxed.

Since these beads are slippery, it’s also easier for the fill to be smoothly distributed across your body’s surface. Surprisingly enough, glass beads don’t make as much noise as other fill materials do either.

Deep Pressure Stimulation

The most important mission of a weighted blanket it to apply deep pressure stimulation. This is literally a form of pressure that calms down the nervous system, and that’s something that the Tranquility blanket does very well IF you buy one in the weight that’s right for you.

The blanket is really efficient at what it’s supposed to do, and we’ll give you a few examples:

  • Because the glass beads used to fill the blanket are evenly spread out across the surface of your body, you won’t feel additional pressure points in some parts, and none whatsoever in others. This makes the blanket efficient for people experiencing pain.
  • For the very same reason, the blanket is efficient at replicating the sensation you get when you’re being hugged. This might be a really nice feature to have when you’re alone at home, watching TV on the sofa, and you throw the blanket on your shoulders to ease some of that loneliness and anxiety.
  • If you have restless leg syndrome, the Tranquility blanket can help. People who experience this problem feel discomfort in their legs, with an uncontrollable need to move them. Needless to say, this causes insomnia and decreases sleep quality. While compression socks might help, these can be too tight for you to sleep with, so the Tranquility blanket is your best choice.

Feel

Needless to say, people will feel a weighted blanket differently, so this is quite a subjective topic, but if we focus on the characteristics and specifications of the Tranquility, we can give you an idea of what to expect from it.

Made entirely from polyester, one side of the blanket feels like soft velour, while the other side has a crisper feel to it. Which side of the blanket should you want to face, that’s entirely up to you.

If you opt for the 10 or 12 pound versions of this blanket, you will notice that it doesn’t take a lot of effort to move it around. For instance, if you’re getting out of bed and want to get all comfy on the couch, you can throw the blanket on your shoulders and move from one room to another with ease.

The glass beads that are inside the blanket are surprisingly quiet, even in the dead silence of the night. You might have heard about weighted blankets that make a lot of noise when you switch positions, but this is not the case. The Tranquility is silent enough to get you through the night noise-free.

Customer’s Opinions

Care & Maintenance

If you ask the majority of Tranquility users what their biggest complain about this blanket is, they will tell you that it’s the cleaning factor. Because you can’t actually throw the blanket in the washing machine to clean it, it’s much more time-consuming to get the product clean.

Weight

As customers will happily tell you, the Tranquility blanket brings forwards the best balance between weight that keeps you calm and puts you to sleep, and the lightweight that makes it easy to carry the blanket from one room to another. The blanket is the perfect example of how a good product knows which buttons to push, but isn’t that heavy as to create discomfort when you’re looking to switch sleeping positions.

Materials

We initially thought that people would be unhappy with polyester being the fabric of choice for the cover of this blanket. To our surprise, people don’t really have any complaints about this material. With fabrics such as cotton and bamboo being widely used across the bedding industry, you’d think that polyester is losing ground. Trust us, it isn’t.

Breathability

If you’ve never used a weighted blanket before, you might think that all this weight creates a very hot environment underneath it, not at all appropriate for sleeping. As most customers will tell you, the Tranquility blanket is breathable, and can successfully be used in warmer seasons without wanting to throw it out the window.

Price

You’d think that buying a good weighted blanket will cost you hundreds of dollars. Interestingly enough, Tranquility buyers thought the very same thing at first. They believed that by spending less on a weighted blanket, they’d get a poorly-made product. But now, they’ve totally reconsidered.

Bottom Line

If you’re tempted to judge the Tranquility weighted blanket by its price, you’d be making a big mistake. In fact, this blanket is the perfect example that you should never judge a book by its cover (particularly when the cover is made entirely from polyester).

This blanket is one of those products that will completely surprise you. Beneath the low price and the seemingly cheap cover lies a product that delivers exactly what it promises: a good night’s sleep. With its major flaw being the fact that you have to spot clean it, customers don’t really have any complaints as far as the efficiency of the blanket is concerned.
