Best Wearable Baby Blanket

Corey Majeau

Every new parent wants to keep their baby cozy and warm but guidelines say to not put a blanket in your baby’s crib until your child is at least one year old.  A blanket can pose a suffocation hazard and increase the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant’s Death Syndrome). Still, your little love bug needs to be warm and that is where a wearable blanket—aka sleep sacks—come in. These wearable blankets replace loose bedding and keep your child warm. They are designed for easy access and to keep your baby feel warm and swaddled.  Many have sleeves and some even have legs for your growing toddler.

When you are picking out a wearable sleep sack here are some things that you will want to keep in mind:

How long will your baby use it?

Take a look at the age range of the product. Some sleep sacks that swaddle the baby are only intended for use until the baby can roll over. Other sleep sacks are versatile enough to grow with the baby.

Material:

You can find a sleep sack in pretty much any material but think about what you want to be putting close to your baby’s skin.  Babies have very gentle skin and are easily agitated, so look for something soft and/or organic. Think seasonally as well.  If you live somewhere with cold winters you will want to have a sleep sack with a heavier material to ensure your baby’s warmth.

Are sleep sacks safe for babies?

There is no worry about the safety of a sleep sack so long as your child is wearing it correctly.  Sleepsacks fit more like clothing than a blanket.  Make sure that the wearable blanket is never loose enough that the material could accidentally cover the baby’s face. It is even deemed safer than a swaddle blanket since as a baby gets older and rolls around, it won’t restrict their movement in the crib.

What should a baby wear under a sleep sack?

A onesie is great for wearing underneath a wearable blanket. It does of course depend on the temperature of the room and what type of sleep sack you’re using. Maybe if you are needing something warmer you could consider putting the baby in pajamas underneath.

Best Modern Looking Sleep Sack

The starfish design of the Classic Zipadee-Zip provides all the comforting enclosed feeling of a swaddle but doesn’t limit your baby’s range of motions. Your baby loves it because they can push up, rollover, wiggle and still soothe themselves back to sleep!  Parents love it because of its modern look, clean lines and design. The Zipadee-Zip is a great swaddle transition item. Unlike wearable blankets, the starfish design creates a slight resistance in the wing-span. This allows your baby to move around freely while still feeling enclosed and cozy – much like the sensation of being in a swaddle.  Also, a great benefit is that the Zipadee-Zip keeps your baby warm all night long. Because every baby regulates their body heat differently, please use your best judgment and use the layers that you are wearing as a  guide for what you want your baby to wear under the Zipadee-Zip. Some babies sleep with light PJs underneath while others simply wear their diaper underneath the Zipadee-Zip!

Pros

  • Modern design
  • Unique starfish wings
  • Multiple sizes
  • Various colors
  • Polyester and spandex blend
  • Easy to dress
  • Gender-neutral

Cons

  • For sleeping only.  Not to be used for walking or running.

Last Words:

Wearable blankets are completely safe because they are not loose. Rather than something extra in the crib, wearable blankets are like an extra article of clothing for your baby that stays in place.  According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, cribs should be kept completely bare. That means no sheets, blankets, stuffed animals, or bumpers. Wearable blankets, on the other hand, have been given the stamp of approval for safety. When your baby is awake, we recommend giving them plenty of love and closeness throughout the day with lots of time in your arms. And at night when it’s time for them to be independent sleepers – a wearable blanket is a perfectly safe solution.

Now that you know that your baby is safe with any of these purchases, all you have to do now is choose the style that will work best for your child and your lifestyle.
