The Best Memory Foam Mattress Protector Reviews

1. SlumberCloud Dryline Mattress Protector

OVERVIEW

  • 60-day warranty
  • Waterproof
  • Temperature Regulating
  • Machine washable
  • Lycra & Polyester
  • Fits 16” deep

If your memory foam mattress has you sleeping hot, but you also need protection against spills or stains, the Slumber Cloud Dryline is your solution. This protector had built-in temperature technology called Outlast that is meant to manage temperature fluctuation throughout your time in bed. We’ve reviewed a few SlumberCloud products, and they never seem to disappoint.

The SlumberCloud is made from a mix of lycra and polyester. This makes the cover super soft and comfortable, almost like there’s not even a protector on it at all. It’s practically a mattress topper, just one with a purpose beyond adding comfort. Unfortunately, it offers no protection against allergens, which is a bit of a bummer because I would have appreciated it more mixed with the temperature regulation feature.

During our tests it seemed to hold up well against spills over a period of time, but it took a while for it to absorb the liquid, so it may become quite uncomfortable sleeping in a puddle if there were to be an accident. But, if you are using it just for general protection against regular wear and tear or to keep you cool at night, it’ll get the job done.

Pros

  • Keeps cool throughout the night
  • Noiseless
  • Completely waterproof
  • Fits 16” deep mattresses
  • People don’t notice it’s there

Cons

  • Costly
  • Takes a while to absorb liquid
  • Doesn’t protect against dust mites

I would recommend this protector to those who need something waterproof and temperature regulating.

  • Cotton & Terry Cloth
  • Fits 18” deep

If you’re looking for the ultimate in memory foam mattress protection, this just might be it. The SafeRest Premium Hypoallergenic Waterproof protector guards against perspiration, allergens, bacteria, dust mites, urine, and fluids. It’s great for those with kids, pets, asthma, allergies, incontinence, or eczema. Anyone concerned about any sort of allergy related to their mattress can quite literally rest easy on this gorgeous protector.

The hypoallergenic cotton terry surface has a membrane back coating that’s waterproof, breathable, and noiseless. I like these features because I would be able to move around and not hear a crinkling sound beneath me, but I would still be completely protected. It also fits like a fitted sheet, so it won’t move around as you sleep either.

After the purchase of this mattress protector, you’re backed by a 10-year full replacement warranty. You can also machine wash it with your sheets and normal detergents that don’t contain bleach and throw it in the dryer on low heat with towels, sheets, and other clothing. The only thing asked is that you don’t iron or dry clean it. That’s not asking for much given all of the benefits.

Pros

  • Has the Invisa-Shield so not to change the feel of your mattress
  • 10-year product warranty
  • Contains no phthalates, vinyl, or PVC’s
  • Noiseless

What Makes A Good Mattress Protector For Memory Foam?

Before you purchase just any plain mattress protector, it’s really important to understand what makes one reliable and good. You want to be able to keep out allergens, moisture, dirt and dander, and anything else that may compromise your mattress. The problem with memory foam is that it is so easy to ruin if it isn’t properly protected, even with a sheet on it. You need to special care of these mattresses if you want them to last and given the cost of a quality memory foam mattress, you’ll want to care for it. So, here’s what you should look for in a protector for your memory foam mattress.

Waterproof

Memory foam is like a sponge, as soon as it gets wet, you may as well consider it ruined. Once water is inside of that foam, there’s a good possibility that mold could form inside of it, especially if there isn’t enough breathability between the bottom and the top of the mattress. This is where a waterproof mattress protector comes in handy. You need something to block out all spills to avoid any of these sorts of issues.

Many of the mattress protectors made are waterproof, which offers protection against bed wetting, pet urine, bodily fluids, spills, and perspiration. A dense waterproof protector with a liner that’s also breathable is best for blocking moisture from gaining access to the memory foam.

Heat Retention

Memory foam mattresses are known to trap heat. That’s because as you sink into the foam, it hugs you and doesn’t allow as much air to breathe as say an innerspring. So bedding that can not only protect your mattress but keep you cool as well, is a nice added bonus. It’s entirely possible to block this one major drawback of memory foam, so why wouldn’t you?

Keep The Bugs Out!

If you allow little critters to get inside of your mattress, chances are it won’t be replaced and your warranty will be voided. Bed bugs are nasty little critters that can infest your entire house, costing you thousands of dollars to have them removed with chemicals if you can’t seem to do it naturally.

Zippered mattress encasements work best for protecting memory foam against these nasty bugs. They zip all the way around the bed and have a flap that goes over the zipper, just in case there’s the tiniest hole in between the end of the seam and the zipper. This ensures that there’s no possibility of bugs getting in. These pads are usually made from a synthetic material that’s dense, such as polyester or polypropylene, which stops the bugs from being able to bite through it.

No Dust Mites Allowed

Dust mites are almost as bad as bed bugs in a sense. They can cause a major stir in allergies and asthma. They can also exacerbate existing conditions. If you invest in a protector that offers dust mite protection, it usually has an antimicrobial treatment on it. This will keep the dust mites away and those with medical conditions that are worsened by dust mite allergies will benefit greatly from protectors that have a zippered, non-membrane surface. If the protector has pores, the dust mites may still be able to get in. So make sure that’s not the cast and keep all of those creepy critters out of your mattress!

Protector Materials

Contrary to what you may think, not all mattress protectors are going to have that strange crunchy sound or feel to them when you move around. Honestly, not a lot of them even sound like that anymore thanks to new materials that are being used and new technology being used to manufacture them. Let’s check out some of the different materials that are being used in protectors and what the pros and cons of each one are.

vinyl mattress protector

Vinyl

Vinyl protectors are indeed the ones that make the crinkle and crunching sound when you move around on them most of the time. These ones are best for those who have a bedwetting problem or for those who like to have their pets sleep with them.

With memory foam, if a pet’s claws dig into it, it could dig up some of the foam or put rips in it. If a pet urinates on the foam, the smell is never going to come out. So, the vinyl protector would be best in this situation. The best part about these is that they can be wiped down quickly and they help prevent mold and mildew. Unfortunately, they do make noise. So you have to decide if that noise is worth the other undeniable benefits.

Polyester Mattress Protector

Polyester

Polyester protectors are great when it comes to waterproofing, especially if it’s a polyester-polypropylene blend. These are generally inexpensive and usually have a polyester shell with a fiberfill of polyester. They can either be fitted, elastic, zippered, or strapped for your convenience.

Cotton

This material is ideal for those who want a dense and firm feel. They are hypoallergenic and perfect for guarding against dust mites and allergens. Unfortunately, if you are looking for a waterproof option, this might not be the best thing for you. This isn’t to say that you can’t get a waterproof cotton protector, you just have to make sure that you research it well enough and make sure that it will protect your memory foam bed against moisture before you purchase it.

The Verdict

It can be tough finding the perfect product to protect your memory foam bed from the everyday wear and tear that it goes through. You can’t predict if your dog is going to have an accident or if you’re going to spill your wine while watching Netflix. Your memory foam mattress is going to suck that liquid right up and forever smell and never be able to be replaced. This is why it’s important to get yourself the best possible mattress cover you can find.

In this case, it would have to be the Slumbercloud Dryline Protector. I chose this one because it first and foremost, protected the mattress in our test, its comfortable, and it’s noiseless. But the added bonus is that it will help to keep you cool. Memory foam mattresses are known to heat up and this will keep the temperatures down. So, if you need something to protect your bed, and help keep you cool, we recommend the Dryline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you put a mattress protector on a memory foam mattress?

Yes. A memory foam mattress is an expensive purchase, one that’s made with thought because of the intensive care it requires. If your mattress suffers any accidental stains, rips, or damage, the warranty becomes null and void. So, it’s critical that you take every step possible to shield it, including getting a mattress protector. Unlike the mattress, the protector can be washed in the machine, helping you keep your memory foam mattress clean and as pristine as when you first bought it. A good mattress protector will protect the mattress against sweat, liquid spills, potential mold that can grow from the presence of moisture, and dust mites. If you choose a zippered mattress encasement, it will also safeguard your mattress against bed bugs whose infestation can not only void the warranty but also keep you up at night. If that doesn’t have you convinced, a protector can counteract the only flaw of memory foam mattresses — their ability to trap heat. Consider the Slumber Cloud Dryline Mattress Protector that is waterproof, noiseless, and temperature regulating.

What is the best type of mattress protector?

The material of a mattress protector determines its key qualities, but there’s no outright best type. A vinyl mattress protector is our top pick for someone who sleeps with their pet or experiences a bedwetting issue. While it may be noisy, it will shield your memory foam mattress against all attacks from your dog, even when they try to dig their claws into the mattress or urinate on it. It’s super easy to clean and just a wipe is sufficient in case of most liquid spills. Polyester is another waterproof choice that is also affordable. However, if you’re looking for something that’s a little denser and firmer, we recommend cotton. A typical cotton protector may not be waterproof, but it is hypoallergenic.
