Is 2020 the Year for a New Mattress?

While buying a new bed is a reason for happiness (because let’s face it, who doesn’t love shopping and owning new stuff?), it is a rather expensive investment because there is no good mattress that you can buy for a couple of hundred dollars. So, unless you have $1.000 just lying around the house, you have to assess your current mattress situation carefully to determine if it’s wise to invest in a new one at this point.

If it were me, I’d buy a new mattress every year or so, not because my old one is obsolete, but simply because I’m passionate about testing the wide variety of models that are out there. But there comes a time when you have to invest in a new bed, and here are the signs that will tell you when that time comes:

  • Sagging is one of the very first signs that indicate it’s time to get a new bed. Throughout time, your body will leave impressions on your mattress, particularly when you have a model that’s made entirely out of foam. Make no mistake, this can also happen with other types of mattresses as well, including the newer and more advanced coil models. A sagging mattress is very visible, and it’s characterized by a bed that will no longer return to its original shape once your body’s weight is lifted off its surface. A mattress should not be flat.
  • Unless you’re an absolute clean freak, your mattress will develop things like mold, mildew, dust mites, bed bugs, and pretty much attract stuff that poses a threat to people with allergies and respiratory problems. If you’ve been waking up recently with a runny nose or watery eyes, that could be due to the allergens in the mattress.
  • Pain is another super important consideration. I have seen plenty of people who wake up feeling sore and don’t even suspect that the mattress might be to blame. Back when I had less mattress knowledge, I also believed that my waking up with sore muscles was due to an incorrect sleeping position. Later, I discovered that my old saggy mattress wasn’t doing a very good job of supporting my body. If you wake up feeling numb, with sore muscles and joints, don’t rule out the possibility that your mattress may have lost its comfort. Your mattress might be too damaged for you to get any proper rest, or you’re just sleeping on a bed that has the wrong configuration to cater to your individual needs.
  • If you go to bed and are always having a tough time finding a sleeping position that feels comfortable enough to actually help you fall asleep, there are high chances that you need a new bed. If you’re a stomach sleeper and your mattress is too soft, your spine will always stay in an unnatural position, and your hips will sink into the mattress too deep. Whatever the case, you need a mattress suitable for how YOU sleep.
  • There are other special situations that might require using a different mattress than the one you’re used to sleeping on up until now. For instance, pregnant women will often change their sleeping habits due to their growing bellies. Those who have recently suffered an incident and have to spend plenty of time on bed rest might also feel that another type of bed could do their body justice and help them recover faster. Or maybe you’ve just moved in with your beloved and need to buy a bed that comes with great motion isolation. Sometimes, you just know it’s mattress shopping time.

Top 5 Mattress Reviews for 2020

If you’re one of the people that feel it’s time to finally invest in a new mattress, we’ve decided to show you the best beds that money can buy in 2020. All of these mattresses are highly recognized as being some of the best bedding brands in the world, so there are high chances that you’ve heard about them in the past. Without further ado, here are the best mattresses for 2020.

Purple

Specs:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King
  • Height: 9.25 inches
  • Construction: elastic polymer + polyurethane foam
  • Sleep trial: 100 nights

Label: most breathable

Purple is definitely a one of a kind mattress, and people who have ever owned one or took an interest in its design and construction know exactly what I’m talking about. The construction of the mattress is ingenious, to say the least.

It features a knitted cover that stretches across the entire surface of the bed, and has a breathable design to make sure that you’ll never get the midnight sweats. The bed comes with a comfort layer made from hyper-elastic polymer. This column-shaped layer is designed to respond to pressure and identify pressure points for optimal personalized support. But there’s more to this layer than just support: the open-air channels will maximize airflow inside the mattress, which results in cooler sleep due to optimal temperature regulation.

Then, you have two layers of polyurethane foam, both of being high in density and capable of supporting your body, as well as the entire weight of the bed. Other mention-worthy features of the Original Purple mattress include a non-slip bottom, a non-toxic knit barrier, and the 100 nights of free sleep trial, so that everyone can get a chance to test and see if the bed does indeed provide a comfortable sleeping environment.

Pros:

  • Elastic polymer grid.
  • Adapts to the body’s curves.
  • Great at motion isolation.
  • Multiple airflow facilitation features.
  • Non-toxic knot barrier.

Cons:

  • Not suitable for heavyweight sleepers.

Who Should Purchase This?

Because we have to consider what this mattress excels at in order to label it, we believe it’s the most breathable option, but there are really so many more things to admire about this bed. The Purple mattress isn’t just for those who sleep hot, but also for those who want better support at a good price.

Leesa

Specs:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Height: 10 inches
  • Construction: foam
  • Sleep trial: 100 nights

Label: best memory foam mattress

Some people just love memory foam mattress, that’s how it is. For them, we’ve included what we believe to be a product that has successfully combined a good price with quality materials and good support for people who find it best for them to sleep on an all-foam mattress.

Let’s talk construction. The Leesa mattress debuts with a fabric made from twill, which feels really soft to the touch and pleasant to the touch. Then you have a comfort layer that’s made from responsive foam, which offers a good amount of body contouring and comfort which can be felt from the moment you lie down.

The transition layer is made from memory foam that cradles your body’s curves and makes it so there are no pressure points in either of your body parts. The base layer is made from supportive foam, giving the mattress shape and supporting the weight of the bed and the sleeper.

Pros:

  • Great memory foam feel.
  • Excellent body contouring.
  • Good pressure point relief.
  • Good price.
  • Softcover.

Cons:

  • Not as cooling as it should be.

Who Should Purchase This?

People who have always been fans of memory foam mattresses will love what Leesa had to offer in terms of comfort related to price. Their signature mattress is one of the most affordable ones in 2020, but the materials used to make the best are high-quality and supportive.

Saatva

Specs:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Height: 11.5 inches Custom Slim/14.5 inches Premier Luxury
  • Construction: individually wrapped coils + steel coil base + luxury Euro top
  • Sleep trial: 120 nights

Label: best innerspring mattress

Some people might argue that this, in fact, a hybrid mattress, but once we walk you through the construction, you will understand why we’ve labeled the Saatva as being an innerspring unit. The mattress will delight you with a Euro pillow top that’s an absolute dream. Made from organic cotton and quilted with just the right amount of foam, this top layer is ideal for people who love a little bit of softness in their mattress.

Then, you have a layer of individually wrapped coils that just provide the best support ever. They are great at minimizing motion transfer, but also make the mattress more breathable because there is plenty of space for air circulation inside the bed. What is even more surprising about the Saatva is the base layer, also made from coils. They are designed to be longer-lasting compared to other types of coils, which adds more durability and less sagging to the mattress.

The reinforced perimeter means two things: better edge support and less sagging on the edges over time. That means that you can roll over to the edge of the bed without feeling like you’re going to fall out of bed any minute now.

Pros:

  • Good edge support.
  • Minimal motion transfer.
  • Soft pillow top.
  • Extra durable.
  • Organic cotton cover.
  • No off-gassing.

Cons:

  • Could be more breathable considering the construction.

Who Should Purchase This?

The Saatva mattress is ideal for a bunch of different sleepers: those who like the soft feel of memory foam, those who are combination sleepers, those who sport some extra pounds (because the mattress is designed to be durable), but also those who share a bed with a partner and could use minimal edge compression and good motion isolation.

Ghostbed

Specs:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King
  • Height: 11 inches
  • Construction: latex + memory foam + gen infusion
  • Sleep trial: 101 nights

Label: best at motion isolation

The GhostBed is a mattress that combines latex and memory foam in order to create a product with great bounce and minimal motion transfer. Because it uses aerated latex foam in its upper layer, sleepers will find it very easy to get in and out of bed, while the small channels in the material create a more breathable sleeping environment.

Aside from that, the mattress also has a layer of gel memory foam. Gel infusion is a very good feature to have in a memory foam mattress because it creates a cooling layer that draws heat away from the body and leaves the mattress and your body at an optimal temperature. The stretchy cover is also made from breathable blends of polyester and viscose.

The GhostBed is constructed in such a way as to minimize motion transfer, which makes it a great mattress for couples. That means that regardless of whether your partner is fussy in bed or they get in and out of bed constantly throughout the night, their movements will not disturb you.

Pros:

  • Very bouncy.
  • Good for couples.
  • Cooling latex comfort layer.
  • Smooth cover.
  • Infused with gel.

Cons:

  • Too firm for side sleepers.

Who Should Purchase This?

The Ghostbed has a memory foam and latex construction that’s looking to minimize motion transfer, which makes it great for couples. However, due to its firmness, it’s also great for stomach sleepers, while the bounciness makes it a viable option for those who have limited mobility.

Helix

Specs:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Height: 12 inches
  • Construction: memory foam + Helix Dynamic foam + wrapped coils
  • Sleep trial: 100 nights

Label: best customizable mattress

It’s never easy to talk about Helix to someone who has never heard about their mattress line-up, but it’s always a pleasure to show such an innovative product as theirs. What makes Helix one of the best mattress brands of 2020 is the fact that they basically take one mattress model and create six different variations (well, there’s more to be exact, but we’re talking about the standard models now) to suit different types of sleepers.

When you first enter Helix’s website, you will see a sleep quiz. The purpose of this quiz is to gather information about you and your sleeping habits merely to get an idea of what type of mattress would be most suited for you. You will then be redirected to one of the available Helix mattresses, which is best matched with your characteristics and your favorite sleeping position.

For instance, there is the Helix Sunset, which is a soft mattress that focuses on pressure relief and is perfect for side sleepers. Those who like to sleep on their back and/or stomach, but still want a soft mattress, are better paired with the Helix Moonlight. However, their flagship model is considered the Helix Midnight, which is also their best-selling bed. It has a medium feel, great pressure relief, and is best suited for side sleepers.

Pros:

  • Sleep quiz.
  • Huge mattress line-up.
  • Great edge support.
  • Good motion isolation.
  • Convenient price.

Cons:

  • A bit of off-gassing.

Who Should Purchase This?

The Helix line of mattresses is the perfect one to look into if you’re not yet sure what type of mattress and what construction you’d feel most comfortable sleeping on. Hands down, it’s one of the most tailored bed buying experiences in 2020.

Bottom Line

The mattresses we’ve mentioned today rank really high in our tests, which is why we consider them the best options for 2020. However, when you’re out shopping for a new mattress, the way you sleep and your particular body configuration should be the most important considerations when you’re looking to buy a new bed.

Remember that mattresses are not a one-size-fits-all type of product, and sleep is a very subjective matter to discuss. Always choose your new bed while taking into account how you most comfortable sleep and prioritize the things you need from a new mattress in order to narrow down your buying options.
