Why Good Mattresses Matter

It may sound like a campaign slogan, but a good mattress makes a world’s difference when it comes to sleeping comfort. Do you know the improvement that the right mattress can bring in your life?

  • It can minimize motion isolation. If you have (or are) a sleeping partner that often tosses and turns until finding the right sleeping position, that causes disturbance for the other person. When buying a new mattress, you can research their motion transfer features, to make sure that when one partner moves, the other isn’t disturbed by their motion.
  • Mattresses have different firmness levels, and it’s very important for those firmness levels to be chosen to match your favorite sleeping position and your weight. For example, if you are a side sleeper, that means you need a softer mattress, because when your shoulders and hips press against the bed and it fights back, you will end up with sore pressure points. However, if you are a side sleeper who is super lightweight, your body might not even sink into the mattress at all. So, always choose the right firmness level by taking into account the position you sleep in.
  • Speaking of favorite sleeping positions, what if you are compatible with a certain mattress firmness and your sleeping partner needs a completely different one? No worries, there are actually mattresses out there (such as Helix) that have a different configuration and firmness level on each side of the bed. Yes, it’s one of the perks of buying a new mattress.
  • A good mattress can actually help relieve pain. If you have a medical condition or have recently suffered an injury that’s causing back or joint pain, sleeping on the right mattress can aid your recovery period. However, sleeping on a bed that’s too soft or too firm for you will only make the pain worse.

Types of Mattresses

Generally speaking, there are six major mattress categories. Of course, there are also variations of these types, but looking at the bigger picture, you will find mattresses that are made from:

  • Foam – Of course, foam can come in many forms: memory foam, polyfoam, foam infused with gel, etc. But memory foam is a winner in terms of materials preferred for a mattress. Invented by NASA and adopted by the bedding industry, memory foam draws the heat of your body to contour its shape and cradle your curves. It is the best choice for pressure relieving mattresses, or for those who want a mattress compatible with an adjustable bed. The downside to memory foam is that it’s not always as durable as other materials (like latex), and it’s known to retain heat.
Image natural latex that is perforated and already cut into rectangles
  • Latex – Seeing as how latex is a byproduct of rubber tree sap, it’s a much more natural option compared to foam. Latex is bouncier and more durable compared to memory foam, but if you like that feeling of sinking into the mattress, memory foam might be more suited for you. Latex is made in two different ways, which leads to two different types of latex, Talalay and Dunlop. Dunlop latex means that the latex is poured inside the mold one time. As a result, this type of latex is softer on the top side, and denser on the bottom. Talalay latex requires a vacuum to suck out the air and then freeze the material. This makes Talalay latex more consistent.
  • Coils – Again, coils come in many shapes, sizes, and layouts. A mattress can have continuous coils (with a single wire that traverses the bed’s entire support system), Bonnell coils (have an hourglass shape), Marshall coils (also known as pocketed coils, each individual coil is wrapped in an encasing that makes them work independently), and offset coils (have an hourglass shape, but the top and bottom side of each coil is flat, causing the system to be less noisy).
  • Hybrid – A hybrid mattress combines two or three different types of material. One of the most common combinations is having a mattress with comfort and transition layers made from foam, and a support system made of coils. These mattresses have become very popular over the last few years, and they bring out the best features that arise from using different materials (like the breathability of a coil system and the bounciness of latex).
  • Airbeds – When you think of an airbed, you think of that inflatable mattress that connects to a pump and is instantly inflated. These have found their way into people’s homes because they are easy to store, great for out-of-town guests, and are perfect for camping or going to the beach. However, the market has recently witnessed a rise in mattresses that feature air chambers (like the ones made by Sleep Number).
  • WaterbedsWaterbeds are one of the less common choices, despite the fact that they are actually older than innerspring mattresses. The major benefit of owning a waterbed is that it feels very different and soothing. Waterbeds can typically be adjusted to respond to your body’s weight, but they are very heavy and difficult to move around

Best 6 Mattresses of 2019

We’ve put together the very best mattresses of 2019, some of them being champions in the preceding years as well. The models below are veterans in the bedding industry, balancing quality materials, ingenious constructions, and a price that won’t break the bank.

Saatva Classic

Specs:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Height: 11.5 inches/14.5 inches
  • Construction: hybrid with foam and innerspring
  • Sleep trial: 120 nights

Best hybrid mattress 2019

The Saatva Classic brings together coils and memory foam in a comfortable and pressure-relieving mattress that gives that nice and bouncy feel. The mattress is available in three firmness options, ranging from plush to firm, providing firmness for every sleeping position.

The mattress debuts with a comfortable Euro pillow top, quilted with memory and giving the sleeper pressure relief from the moment they lie down. The cover is made from organic cover, and treated with Guardin® botanical antimicrobial solution.

The core of the mattress lies in the individually wrapped coils that lead to an aired and motion isolating bed. Aside from making it really easy to get in an out of bed thanks to the bounciness of the coils, the mattress is also great for those who share a bed, because the coils will only compress under direct pressure, minimizing motion transfer.

Pros:

  • Great motion isolation.
  • Good for sleeping partners.
  • Bouncy traditional feel.
  • Comfortable Euro pillow top.
  • Good edge support.
  • No off-gassing.
  • Excellent customer service.

Cons:

  • Not very breathable.

Who Should Purchase This?

The Saatva Classic is a mattress for those of you that are a bit melancholic over that classic spring bed feel, but also for people who share a bed with a fussy partner and could really benefit from motion isolation in order to avoid sleep disruption.

That means that the materials used to make this cover are free of any pesticides, dyes, or other toxins.

This hybrid mattress combines Dunlop latex with a layer of innerspring coils that increase exponentially with the size of your mattress. Best innerspring mattress 2019

Oh, there’s a lot to be said about the Purple which, by the way, now has an upgraded and improved version. But let’s not bother you with the details and go over through the main selling-points that make purple the best innerspring mattress in 2019 (by the way, some would argue that this is a hybrid mattress because of its multiple-material construction, but it’s actually an innerspring bed).

What will always make the Purple mattress stand out of the crowd is the Smart Comfort Grid, which provides body support and cushioning with its column-like construction? What this layer basically does is trigger betted support in areas where your body sinks in deeper into the mattress.

Casper Original

Specs:

  • Available sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
  • Height: 12 inches
  • Construction: foam
  • Sleep trial: 100 nights

Best memory foam mattress 2019

Everything about the Casper mattress is about comfort. Right from the moment you lie down, you can feel your body sinking into the comfort layer made with open-cell memory foam. From that point on, it’s all about pressure point relief, with layers that include responsive memory foam, adaptive transition foam, and durable support foam.

From the get-go, it’s clear that Casper understood that people are tempted to steer clear of memory foam because it retains heat. That’s why their first layer features open-cell foam that is looking to enhance the breathability factor and thus provide a cooler sleeping environment.

The Casper Original may be the best memory foam mattress this year, but now it’s also available in a hybrid version, which basically substitutes the core layer of support foam for a layer of coils. The Original is, in the end, a bed designed to contour your body and provide you with the best support and comfort possible.

Pros:

  • Excellent foam construction.
  • Good pressure point relief.
  • Convenient price tag.

Cons:

  • Not good for heavyweight sleepers.
