What is an LED Light Bulb?

LED stands for light emitting diode and is considered to be up to 90% more efficient than a traditional incandescent light bulb. The work due to how the electrical current passes through a microchip to illuminate the light source and create visible light. They also ‘burn’ much cooler due to a built in heatsink that absorbs heat and dissipates it into the atmosphere.

They do not burn out like traditional incandescent bulbs, but rather dim over time due to a lumen depreciation effect. Rather than turning off at the end of their life, they are considered at the end of their lifetime when they reach approximately 30% of light output depreciation. Therefore, they produce light for a longer period of time- making them more environmentally friendly as well.

How LED Brightness is Measured

Typically, we measure light brightness from a bulb using wattage- which is how much energy being consumed. LED may list wattage for informational purposes, but the true measurement of how much light is being emitted is actually called a lumen value. An LED of the same wattage is MUCH brighter than an incandescent bulb. For example, a 7 to 9 watt LED is the same as a 40-Watt incandescent, and a 16 to 20 watt LED is equal to a 100 incandescent. This means they save energy while providing a more efficient light.

LED Color Temperature Explained

LED bulbs are also offered in various color temperature options. This is a scale that offers a warmer, more yellow hue on one end, and a cooler, more blue hue on the other. Some SMART LED bulbs can be changed to offer one of the other during specific times of the day.

LED Dimming Features

Dimmable bulbs provide a scale in which you can change the energy output to lighten, or brighten your lighting experience. This is a great way to help save on electrical costs or change lighting through the day. It does require a dimmable switch (easy to instal), or work with a SMART LED bulb design.

LED Smart Bulbs

Technology has grown so quickly over the last 5 years, that most smart home systems easily connect to your lighting sources via built in bluetooth and wifi bulb capabilities. Color changing and dimmable LED bulbs are incredibly common, and can be used with any light outlet and controlled by your phone to avoid installing dimming switches.

LED Cost Benefits

The above mentioned details are all excellent benefit considerations, but one of the most popular reasons for switching your bulbs to LED is the cost saving. Although many may seem more costly upfront (especially smart bulbs), they last much longer and draw much less energy to use. Those savings add up fast over time.

Benefits of a Dimmable Bulb

Although you may be sold on the idea of using LED lighting, you might not be so sure about the dimmable features you can pick and choose from. If you are wondering why bother with something you can change the brightness of, when all you want to do is illuminate a room, consider the following:

— Convenience

Since an LED bulb is longer lasting than other types of lighting solution, you won’t have to replace them as often. The dimming effect also provides you the means to control just how much, or little, light being emitted.

— Reduction of Eye Strain

LED lighting is considered a more comfortable option for your eyes to focus with. The ability to dim and control light output, as well as being able to pick and choose the light color makes it more conducive to health eye focus.

— Longevity

As mentioned over and over is the longevity of the LED bulb option that doesn’t burn out, but simply dims over time.

— Efficiency

Cutting power consumption by up to 80%, these are obviously a much more affordable option. Plus, being able to dim your lights also reduces energy draw. This makes it more environmentally friendly as well.

— Safety

LED bulbs generate less heat, which reduces the risk of fire. Plus their use works well with motion sensors to help improve the safety of spaces.
