Best Baby Bassinets

Danielle Mcleod

After the birth of your child, you want to keep them close by and safe, but finding a good solution to place them in that is both secure and reliable can be a challenge. A crib can also look awfully large for such a small infant, which is why you should have a bassinet on hand for the first few months of your child’s life- even if only to provide peace of mind.

Bassinets are a safe, secure place for your baby to lay while both awake or asleep, and offer a much more portable option for variable placement and use. We’ve highlighted the uses of a bassinet below, and provided some popular products for you to consider.

What is a Bassinet?

A bassinet is a type of bed made specifically for babies from birth to around 4 to 6 months of age. Oval shaped, most have a soft cloth or mesh siding and are designed for easy mobility and use. Some even fold up for easy travel, and offer various features to help meet your specific needs. Generally, once a baby is around 20 pounds or can roll over on their own, a bassinet is a safe option. After that it is best they move to a larger crib with higher sides.

— Bassinet Features

Most bassinets are raised to about the waistline of an average adult height. Adjustability is a popular feature as well so you can raise or lower it for specific needs- such as placing next to a bed at eye level while you sleep. Some have a removable panel and the ability to secure to your bed so your baby can sleep alongside you in their own space in a safe co-sleeping position. This can be helpful for nursing mothers, or for c-section recovery.

They come in a variety of colors as well, and may have hoods, storage, or even wheels to move it from one place to the next. Lighting, sound, and rocking movements are also additions you may find.

How is a Bassinet Different from a Crib?

A crib is a more solid, stationary space that has higher, slatted (and sometimes cloth) sides to keep your child in their beds once they become more mobile and independent. They also come in a wide variety of shapes and styles, but almost all utilize a crib or toddler mattress that you can use for a toddler bed as your child grows. In fact, some cribs are convertible and can be turned into a toddler bed to accommodate growing children.

Benefits of a Bassinet

There are many reasons why you may prefer a bassinet when you first bring your child home. For starters, it is a smaller sleeping and napping space and because of that is lighter and more mobile to move from one room in the house to the next to help keep your baby close. It also provides an easy solution to keep your child with you through the night without taking up too much space- which is especially nice if you already have a small home.

Because they are lifted, it makes it easier for you to lay your baby down, and pick up. You avoid having to bend over too far, which can be a concern for C-section recovery. Plus, they are generally much less expensive than a full size crib.

If you want to co-sleep and keep your child close through the night, bassinets provide an excellent opportunity to do this in a safe manner. The height can be a concern for some people, especially as your child grows, which is why it is not recommended for use with children older than 4 months, or as soon as they can turn over on their own.
