It’s certainly an interesting time for mattress shopping. Not all that long ago, you had to leave the house, drive from store to store, and be pushed by aggressive salesmen who didn’t often hold the best interest of the customer as their top priority. With the online business model, consumers can research, learn about, and shop hundreds of quality mattresses from the comfort of home.

If you’re looking for a memory foam product that addresses common visco problems like sleeping hot and excessive sinking, Tomorrow provided a queen-sized mattress for our review that could do the trick. I think it has a lot to offer for sleep partners and people who carry a little more weight, so let’s see what they came up with.

Benefit of the Thin Cover

You’ll notice the cover is relatively thin, and there’s a reason. Without a quilt, you’re able to engage directly with the comfort layer. I used a mattress protector with this product, and it significantly reduced the memory foam contouring effect.

However, when you lay directly on the cover, you can really feel as the mattress gives you just a slight hug. The cover is polyester knit, and the side panels have soft features that work well in most settings.

Tomorrow’s Inner Workings

Without further adieu, let’s take a look under the hood. It’s important to carefully examine each layer of any mattress you may be considering, so let’s see what Tomorrow offers. When you order, you’re going to have two firmness options, and this makes a difference in what you’ll find inside. You can choose between the medium firm and medium soft. I have the medium firm model.

On top, we find the one-inch Black Diamond Phase Change Material memory foam layer. Traditional memory foam sleeps hot, and the phase change material is capable of storing and releasing large amounts of energy. This makes it great at temperature regulation in the comfort level where you really need it. It works together with the next half-inch layer of Airy Comfort Foam with Gel. This layer also works to help the mattress breath while providing contouring comfort. As if that weren’t enough, we find yet another 1 ½ inch Bounce Foam Layer.

When I pressed on each of these comfort layers, you could tell they all have viscoelastic properties, and the response gets a little slower at each level. For me, this allowed ease of movement, so if you’ve shied away from memory foam due to sinkage, this may be a great option to consider.

Support System

Moving on to the support system, we find a six inch pocketed 800 Series high-carbon steel coil system. Since the coils are able to flex independently of one another, this helps keep motion transfer low and allows for more precise support. They’re wrapped in Coil Insulator Celestra, a nonwoven fabric that adds stability to the coil unit.

We can’t see the coils due to the 6 X 3-inch Ventilated Foam Side Rails. Coils are known to breathe pretty well on their own, and this perforated outer-edge further promotes cool sleep by allowing heat to escape through all sides. Finally, down at the bottom, we find a one-inch base foam layer which the coils rest on. The total thickness is 10 inches.

Don’t cut your firesock. It’ll void your warranty. I do want to point out though when I touch the layers directly, the top three comfort layers are notably cooler than the support layers, so the phase change material and Airy Comfort Foams do seem to make a difference.

Overall Performance Expectations

Now that we have a better idea of Tomorrow’s construction, let’s take a general look at overall performance. I mentioned my mattress protector takes away from the contour, and this is in part because I just grabbed it out of my closet. There are numerous protectors made with memory foam in mind, and they range in price anywhere from $15 to $130. If you get yourself something made of vinyl or polyester, you’re usually safe.

Laying directly on the mattress, you can feel as the comfort layer pretty quickly fills in the curves of your body. You can definitely pick up on the coils adding that upward support. I think Tomorrow has found a pretty decent balance of comfort and support.

I typically gravitate toward a plusher product. If you don’t carry a whole lot of weight and really appreciate a soft sleep surface, you might want to explore the medium soft option. I think the support found in the medium firm option is ideal for those who carry more weight. According to Tomorrow, both firmness options are capable of holding an impressive 1,000 pounds for up to ten years. Despite the use of three visco foam layers, I had no trouble getting in and out of bed or moving around.

Sinkage and Firmness

To give you an idea of what degree of firmness you can expect with the medium firm option, I stood in the middle of the product applying my 130 pounds to a 9 X 7-inch area. In my experience, products classified as medium typically result in sinkage of around 6 ½ inches. With Tomorrow, I expected this to be slightly less since this product is a little more on the firm end.

As expected, I sunk in six inches. Therefore, what you would typically expect from a product which is a little more on the firm end is pretty reflective of what this option delivers. This firmness setting can be helpful for those who carry more weight while smaller consumers may want to explore the medium soft option.

Motion Isolation

Where traditional memory foam lacked in cooling capabilities it made up for in motion isolation. If you have a sleep partner, you don’t want to be disturbed every time they move or get in and out of bed.

To gauge motion transfer reduction, I had someone lay next to me and move around. You clearly see in our video review that there is very minimal movement in my body. I think Tomorrow did an impressive job, especially considering springs are included in the overall construction.

Since low motion transfer often equates to low responsiveness, I also tested the product by dropping a 20-pound medicine ball on the bed. Rather than quickly sinking into the memory foam, the ball did bounce a couple times. This is definitely something you want to look for in modern memory foam.

Heat Transfer Capabilities

We’ve talked quite a bit about the different measures Tomorrow took to help ensure their product could breathe, so let’s see how our thermal testing worked out. After laying on the mattress for 30 minutes, we used our thermal imaging camera to watch as it cooled back off to a room temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. It took seven minutes and 35 seconds.

Based on the products I’ve tried out,10 minutes is average, so I think the combination of Phase Change Material, memory foam layers, and cooling side rails worked well together.

I also placed my hand directly on the layers while monitoring with my thermal camera. You could see how the Phase Change Material acts as a heat sink to keep you cool. If you’ve had trouble sleeping hot in the past and since avoided memory foam, this could be your chance to finally enjoy that added contour without having a heat stroke.

What to Expect in Terms of Longevity

In all likelihood, you want to find a mattress that’ll last. Tomorrow’s 1,000 pounds, 10-year claim is pretty impressive. I’ve only had mine for a couple weeks, but we can take a look at some information to see if the claim should reasonably hold up.

Memory Foam Densities

For starters, the only polyfoam used is found in the side rails, and they have a density of 1.7 pcf, which is pretty good. In memory foam, you want to shoot for at least three pcf. We find a pcf of 3.5 in the top memory foam layer and 2.5 pcf in the Airy Comfort Foam Layer. Even more impressive is the density of the medium soft top layer weighing in at 4.8 pcf.

Coil Count

When it comes to coils, you want at least 800 in a queen-sized mattress in terms of durability, and that’s exactly how many you’ll find. Overall, I think the quality of these materials makes for a great value. It should last for quite awhile under normal wear and tear.

Edge Support

Edge support is important to consider, especially if you have mobility issues. It helps you get in and out of bed and also offers the support necessary to help keep you from falling off the edge. This can be especially helpful if your sleep partner is a bed hog.

All-foam mattresses tend to sink in a lot, but the spring unit along with the side rails do a good job at keeping you supported. You can see when I sit in various areas of the edge that I do sink in the comfort layers.

However, there is a notable point where the coils work to keep me supported, especially when I lay on the edge. This support makes it easy to get out of bed, something that some people struggle with on a memory foam. Overall, I think Tomorrow did a great job incorporating proper edge support with visco foam.

Maintenance, Protection, Care and Warranty

I found the Tomorrow mattress to utilize a clever combination of memory foam and pocketed coils to promote both contour and support. As a long-time memory foam fan, I’m continually pleased with the creative ways manufacturers are working to overcome visco downfalls.

I love what Tomorrow did with the incorporation of the coils to add support and bounce, and I was equally impressed with how well the comfort layers stayed cool to the point of being able to feel the difference when you touch the foams directly. This could be a great fit for restless sleep partners, heavier people needing additional contour, and those who have a propensity to sleep hot.

I think a lot of time and attention went into developing a layer combination that was able to balance comfort up top with support beneath. The two firmness options can help both lighter and heavier-weight people add a degree of customization, and their 100-night sleep trial allows plenty of time to determine if it’s going to work out long-term. Based on the ratio of quality to cost, this is an excellent value that should hold up over time.
