After being a stomach sleeper for as long as I can remember, it was time to do something about this less-than-ideal sleeping position. I was constantly waking up with a stiff neck, and I knew that this would be detrimental to my health in the long run. Like everything else in life, this was just going to take some practice. To make the transition from stomach to back sleeping, I felt like sleeping on my side would be a good first step to see if this would stick. 

One of the best types of pillows you can invest in as a side sleeper is a full-body pillow, which are often used by pregnant women or those with persistent back problems. I also struggle with lower back pain since, like many of us, I began working from home full-time. It was time to see if I could become a full-time side sleeper with the intention of sleeping on my back in the long run. Unboxing and First Impressions

First things first, let it be known that this pillow is a monstrosity. It’s heavy, bulky and gives you an upper body workout just by fluffing it and deciding where to place it on your bed. It looks like a pancake (not the light and fluffy kind) when folded right out of the box, yet after an hour or so it returned to its normal size.

I immediately noticed that it gave off a strong odor, which wasn’t quite the offgassing smell that’s typical of memory foam. I regularly sleep on the standard sized Snuggle-Pedic memory foam pillow, yet this initial chemical smell was completely different (and much less tolerable). To me, the Full Body Pillow smelled like grass – not in the nice, freshly cut way – and it filled my bedroom with the scent for several hours. So, if you have a sensitive nose like me (and intend on sleeping with the pillow on the same night it arrives), keep this in mind as you’ll need to air it out until the smell dissipates.

Aside from the initial odor that smacks you in the face, this pillow is one of the most comfy and snug money can buy. I adore my Snuggle-Pedic standard size pillow, so to have another one in the full-body size was a special treat. While I don’t usually sleep on my side, I know it’s far better for you than stomach sleeping, so I was very willing to give this pillow a try.

Loft

After measuring the exact loft of the Snuggle-Pedic Full Body Pillow, it came to around 5.5 inches. This is about average for most standard sized pillows, and the same measurement as the Snuggle-Pedic Original Memory Foam Pillow that I sleep on every night. 

I found that the loft wasn’t too thin that I didn’t have enough support under my head and neck, and it wasn’t too great that my neck would feel strained when I slept on my side. There’s nothing worse than waking up with a crooked neck, and I never once had this issue with the Snuggle-Pedic body pillow.

My Sleep Trial Experience – Full-Body Support

If you’re partial to being the big spoon (and you don’t have an actual human to snuggle with), a full body pillow can do the job just fine. Although I mentioned that this pillow is huge, it still makes for the perfect cuddle companion. When you’re sleeping on your side, have one leg on each side of the pillow and your spine is in perfect alignment, this is an ideal sleeping position to prevent or lessen any existing back pain. 

I slept with this pillow every night for about a month and immediately saw a difference in my lower back pain, which usually lingers as a result of working from home every day. I used to love sleeping with life-sized stuffed toys as a kid, and to me a body pillow is the perfect adult equivalent. When we’re too old to cuddle up with our blanky or favorite plush toy, a soft and comfy pillow can be the next best thing.

Cooling Properties and Breathability

So far I’ve had no issues with waking up hot and sweaty, particularly around the neck area. This is something I know many of us struggle with as the weather heats up. If you consider yourself a hot sleeper, it’s recommended to invest in bedding products that incorporate cooling capabilities so you’ll always sleep cool. Having a standard pillow that wicks away moisture is different from a cooling, breathable full-body pillow, given that more of your body comes into contact with the larger pillow. You won’t find many pillows that are fully machine washable – particularly when we’re talking about memory foam. It’s usually a no-no to toss any foam products into your washing machine. Since memory foam is so delicate, it can tear or disintegrate easily.

There are so few pillows out there that are suitable for every sleeping position, are cooling and breathable, fully machine washable, and most importantly, cradle your head so comfortably that the highlight of your day is getting into bed every night.
