Sleepgram Pillow : The Pillow for Everyone

It’s not often you find a pillow that claims it is for everyone, and it actually turns out to be true. The Sleepgram Pillow is a pretty good contender for this- especially if you are a fan of the feel of a feather and down pillow. Finding pillows that work well your unique sleep comfort can be a real hassle, and you may have found disappointment rather than a good night’s sleep more than once in your search for the perfect pillow.

Nothing is worse than getting hold of a promising product only to find out that you may respect the quality, but hate the way it feels. The Sleep Judge Review Team has received the standard/queen Sleepgram pillows to review, and our honest take pertaining to our detailed experiences can be found below.

Sleepgram Company History

Sleepgram began at home 2016 when the founder and his new wife found themselves unable to fall asleep due to her discomfort. Changing mattresses never helped, and an idea was borne to address pillow comfort to help find a more restful position. From there was borne the Dream Team, 2 co-founders and their cohorts determined to provide a pillow that can work for just about everyone, from child to adult, to help you get the sleep you deserve.

Giving Back

The company has partnered with domestic partners, such as The Salvation Army to give back to communities in need. As of 2018 over 10,000 pillows had been donated. Their generous sleep trial we detail below is part of this process to avoid product waste, and allow those in need a surface to lay their head upon.

Breakdown of the Sleepgram Pillow

The Sleepgram pillow is touted as a 3-on-1 product with various adjustment levels of soft, medium, and firm surface comforts. Our trials found you actually have quite a few more ways to adjust your pillow than just three- making it a product that truly may encompass the needs of just about every type of sleeper out there.

The design of the pillow includes a filled outer casing that can hold the two separate firmness level pillows found within. You can use any one of these surfaces as a stand alone, or with one another to create the loft and support level you need and desire.

Unpacking

The pillow arrived in a branded box, which is not always everyone’s favorite choice as it advertises what was delivered, but it does speak well to the packaging quality. Inside, the compressed pillows were folded and airsealed within plastic, wrapped in a more decorative plastic protection, and included a small booklet for pillow care and use. Upon unwrapping I was shocked at how lightweight and small the pillows looked to be. They were incredibly well packed, and when I broke the thick plastic seal, immediately began to expand.

First Impressions

I honestly only though there was one pillow in the box; they were so well compressed. But you are provided the option of buying a single pillow, or packs of 2, 4 or 6 depending on your needs, and these were a pair of standard/queen pillows individually wrapped. Knowing that there were 2 layers of pillow within each casing, I truly was confused at how they got all that material packed in there, and had to unzip the case to see for myself that they were there. Once they began to expand it seemed like a lot of material and light, fluffy feeling ill- so I was impressed that they were able to ship what they did so economically, and lightweight!

Fluffing

You are directed to take the pillows out of the casing and either run in your dryer for 1- to 15 minutes, or hand fluff each for 2 to 3 minutes. I went ahead and took advantage of my dryer and put it on low tumble dry with a few wool dryer balls for further fluffing purposes. If I had thought they had expanded prior to placing in the dryer, the dryer DOUBLED the efforts of their own self expansion! Out came fluffy, light, downright poofy layers of pillows and casings. I did notice as I began laying them down that the poly fiberfill within did clump up a bit on some areas. At first that had me a little worried, but after I shook out each pillow it all redistributed very nicely, alleviating my concerns.

Features and Benefits

The construction and features of a product are what draws the attention of the consumer, and the great reviews and quality benefits this pillow has so far shown is what drew our interest initially. We gone ahead and broken these features down to explain the detail that has gone into this pillow design, and provided our own impressions and thoughts of each.

Sizes

The Sleepgram Pillow is available in 2 different sizes: a standard/queen and a king. These measure 18 x 26 inches and 18 x 33 inches respectively. We received the standard/queen pillow which fits perfectly into a queen sized pillowcase, but is a bit tight in a standard pillowcase which makes it feel slightly more firm. The ‘pillow casing’ the 2 pillows come within is actually a pillow in itself (at least in my opinion) as it is filled on both sides of the opening to provide yet another layer of plush softness. This provides a 2 inch gusset to accommodate the layering of both pillows if you feel this is your best option.

Loft Adjustability

This 3 in 1 design is what makes it an adjustable choice, which allows you to use the various layers in multiple ways to provide the loft and surface comfort you need. Altogether the pillow has an approximate 9 inch profile when all layers are used together. The blue layer (designated so by the blue tags sewn into the casing) is the thinnest layer, and measures approximately 2.5 inches in hight. The red layer is about 4.5 inches in hight, and the casing, if used as a stand alone, is around 3.5 inches in height. When put together there is some slight compression overall as the case is design to keep them from shifting within the pillow though the night.

2-Sided Zipper

In order to easily adjust your pillow, and take it apart for washing and fluffing, there is a 2-sided zipper that folds back for quick accessibility. The zipper is well sewn with double stitched seams, and lays flat when zipped close. I found it easy to work with as it unzipped well, and also closed around the pillow layers to zip back up. I did have to provide slight manipulation as there is some layer compression occurring, but it wasn’t difficult by any means.

Down Alternative Polyester Filling

Many people love the feel of down, or feather and down pillows. They are malleable, soft, provide support where needed, and most are machine washable. Because of this, down alternative choices have become equally as popular- perhaps even more so due to easier access to the materials used to make them. The Sleepgram uses a soft, microfiber polyester filling in both the pillows and case to provide a shapeable, soft, yet strong support that distributes itself under your head and neck where you need it. I found it to be extremely comfortable, easy to shape and form, and not at all overly lofty- meaning it didn’t raise up around my head or face when using it. It also fluffed easily, but did not flatten out completely when in use.

2 inch Gusset, 100% Cotton Covers

The covers of all the pillows are 100% cotton, providing excellent airflow into and through the pillows. The outer cover also has a 2 inch gusset that is so well sewn into the pillow it is hard to determine where, exactly, the seams begin. They help hold your pillows, when layered, perfectly within the case to hold shape and provide the loft needed for side sleepers in particular. The extra material is not at all overwhelming either when you only decide to use one pillow within the case, or even the case as a stand alone. In fact, it’s not even noticeable.

Breathable, Cooling Comfort

Plenty of people sleep warm as well, and so a breathable, cool sleeping pillow is of utmost importance so they don’t wake in a sweat. The fine, durable threads of poly fiberfill provide easy movement of air through the pillow, and the 100% cotton casing is equally as breathable. Due to the layering of the pillows you also have added availability for air movement, all features that lend themselves towards a cooler night’s sleep. I found the pillows to sleep cool and comfortable despite warmer evening weather. At no time did I even feel overly warm or uncomfortable- even when lying upon the pillow to help support my hips.

Comfort Adjustability

How you sleep is very important to the choices you make in relation to your pillow. Stomach sleepers are best left to sleep flat on a mattress with no pillow, but many find this uncomfortable and require at least a thin layer to rest upon. Back sleepers need a thinner, softer pillow as well, but one with enough loft to hold their head in line with their shoulder, and also to provide support under their neck. Side sleepers need a thicker, responsive pillow that is able to keep their head in alignment with their spine, and also fill the gap between their head and neck.

The company provides the following information pertaining to adjustments for personal comfort:

  • Soft- case + blue pillow
  • Medium- case + red pillow
  • Medium firm- case + both pillows

This does provide some very obvious differences in feel, but we also found that these pillow combinations are much more versatile than even the company provides. First off, you can use either pillow or case as a stand alone as well. This is particularly helpful for stomach sleepers who can also take advantage of one of the pillows to rest their hips upon to help improve spinal alignment. You also can easily fold, or roll one of the pillows to place beneath your knees or neck when laying on your back.

Machine Washable

What is even more fabulous is that these pillows are machine washable and dryable. This makes taking care of them that much easier, and we found they held up to the wash very well. I mentioned that when fluffing the gilling did shift but it was easy to fluff back into place- and this help true even after washing, but a light fluff makes them good as new.

Warranty: 100 Night Sleep trial

I commented above on the generous sleep trial provided by the company. 100 nights is the perfect amount of time to determine if this is a good choice for you, and provides enough nights to play with your adjustments if needed. Sleepgram wants to ensure your comfort with their product, so you are able to return your pillow within 100 nights of purchase for a full refund as long as the pillow is not damaged, and is in like new, or donatable condition. They also, on occasion, offer partial refunds on a case by case basis as well. You are responsible for the shipping costs back, however, unless the item has been received in a damaged state- upon which they will provide an exchange at no cost to you. I found this very reasonable practice as you should definitely have been able to determine if this pillow was comfortable and useful within a 3+ month sleep experience. Many companies will refuse returns of an opened pillow due to hygiene issues, but Sleepgram is determined to not allow any product go to waste and works with the Salvation Army to provide pillows in halfway houses and shelters throughout the USA and Canada.

Consumer Reviews

Despite being a fairly new company overall with a new product, adjustability options in pillows have gained ground in their popularity, and this is a product many consumers are interested in checking out. Despite being a all in one type product, personal preference in construction and materials will always differ from one person to the next, so it may not be everyone’s first choice, but it still has racked up plenty of positive reviews – placing it in a top rated position for down alternative, adjustable pillows. People love that it is adjustable and machine washable, and also that it can be manipulated to provide support where needed. This is especially true for those who are fans of down pillows looking to replace their old, worn out comfort. Claims have been made that it helps with chronic back pain and supports the spine correctly, and that it doesn’t lose its shape and support over time. Those who have disliked it find it too soft, and even I can see that if you are used to a memory foam pillow of some sort, or even an overstuffed firm polyfill choice, this is a pillow that would feel soft. That doesn’t mean it isn’t supportive, simply that it may not be the best choice for certain body types or personal needs.

Trial Opinions

I was curious to know other detailed opinions pertaining to this pillow and passed them onto some friends who sleep in a different position than me to get their view. Sleeper one is a shorter, but broad and heavier side sleeper who sleeps hot and preferes memory foam pillows. Sleeper two is a tall, athletic back and side sleeper who likes a softer pillow but struggles to find good neck support. Sleeper one used both layers within the pillow case. After using the pillow for a week, they said they still preferred the thicker, more firm feel of the memory foam, but did appreciate how the Sleepgram allowed for excellent neck support and held its shape very well through the night. They also commented that it slept cool and did not at all contribute to any added heat while they slept. Sleeper 2 used the red pillow in the case and rolled the blue pillow under her neck when sleeping on her back. She also liked just the red pillow in the case on her side. Although it felt a little thin that way, she liked to be able to switch positions from side to back and still felt she slept comfortably. It is a pillow she would recommend.

My Sleep Trial Experiences

I am a self proclaimed stomach sleeper, but like to lay against a pillow to prop myself more up on my side for a healthier sleep experience. As a shorter, athletically built woman, I prefer softer pillow surfaces and some of my favorites are soft shredded foam and down and feather picks because they work well to support me in my movements at night. I also occasionally suffer from a tight hip and need good hip and back alignment.

Back

I’m a back napper, not sleeper, but appreciate being able to lay back and catch a few minutes of rest after a long day of work before getting dinner ready and the rest of chores of the house done. I can usually sleep for 20 minutes or so until I naturally want to turn to my side- IF I am comfortable. I feel pressure at the back of my head easily so need a softer surface. This pillow was an awesome choice, and I used the red pillow and pillowcase for the most comfortable back lying position. At first I tried the blue plus the case, but I needed a little more for under my neck. However, both my children are back sleepers, and the blue pillow plus the case worked perfectly for their smaller frames.

Side

I do like to sleep on my side even though I eventually roll more towards my stomach. Because I tend to roll between these two positions I do have trouble finding a good pillow to provide support as stomach and side sleeping have very different needs. Because of this I used both pillows in the case for side comfort, and found I could sort of ‘hug’ it when I went to shift to my stomach to help keep me supported. As a side sleeper it may have been a bit thick overall for my narrow frame, but I found that the red pillow on its own just wasn’t quite enough. I did play with simply stuffing the red and blue pillow into a seperate pillowcase, which did give me more of what I was looking for. I do recommend a zippered pillow case to use these two together, however, as they did shift a bit through the night.

Stomach

This is my natural sleep position and although I feel like I need a fairly flat surface, I do sleep better when I have a pillow to keep my head from laying flush upon the mattress. I had a few choices that worked well for me like this: the case, the blue pillow, and the blue pillow plus case were all comfortable. The healthiest position most likely was when I was using just the case or the blue pillow.

Trial Conclusions

As a lover of soft pillows this one is right up there with the best in my opinion. I love that you can adjust it- and truly, you have more than one pillow going on here for use elsewhere if you don’t use both in the case. And as a mother, machine washable is a must in my household. From what I can tell, this is a pillow that will most likely make just about any consumer happy. Small to average sized people are going to get the most out of this pillow, with larger bodies most likely impressed with its comfort for back and stomach sleeping, but possible not for side sleeping.

Overall Sleeping Rating: 4.8

Although near perfect in my opinion, obviously a soft, fiber filled pillow is not going to be the preference of all sleepers- especially those who are used to memory foam. SO in terms of claims that say it is a pillow for everyone? Well, that may fall short depending on who you are. I also felt that perhaps the red pillow could be a bit more stuffed full of fiber to provide an even greater difference in pillow profile since the case is partially stuffed as well. The fact that it can be washed, and the quality of material and construction is superb, make it a great choice to have in the house. Plus, it sleeps very cool and has excellent airflow, providing circulation all night long for all positions.

Conclusion

If you have found yourself frustrated in your hunt for a comfortable, quality pillow that will fit your need, then you really should check out the Sleepgram Pillow. The adjustability of it is a feature that allows you to find your perfect comfort level, and truly makes it worth reading up on. The benefits of having a pillow that works for your unique sleep position are endless as it supports your overall health through spinal alignment. Those who sleep comfortably are generally sleeping healthy, and that became the purpose of the Sleepgram creation in the first place.
