The Sleep Number M7

There’s a solid reason why Sleep Number sells some of the most expensive mattresses. They have invested a lot in the research and development of high-end products that customize to cater to the needs of every individual sleeper. With smart technology integrated into their mattresses, this company delivers a premium sleeping experience to those who are willing to pay thousands of dollars to float on clouds. This is more than just a metaphor, as you’ll come to understand when reading the M7 review.

Sleep Number M7 Mattress

Before moving on, there’s one thing we have to get out of the way: the M7 has been discontinued from Sleep Number’s official website, but you may find it for sale on websites of other online retailers. The M7 has been replaced with the i7, an upgraded version that delivers the features of a smart mattress.

Back in 2016, this company had 4 different bed collections listed on their website and the M7 was part of the Memory Foam Series. Starting with 2018, the manufacturer sells the i7 as part of their 360 Smart Beds collection. Even if the Memory Foam Series is no longer available, the i7 is, indeed, an upgraded version of the M7, being the only mattress that comes with memory foam.

Features & Benefits

One of the many factors that contribute to getting a good night’s sleep is the mattress you’re resting upon. Depending on the firmness level, how many hours of rest you get and if you ever experience any pains, the M7 can be a great sleeping companion for many nights to come.

Delivery

One of the many great things about company’s services is the delivery. SN has assembled a team of professionals to deliver the mattress to your doorstep, install it for you and then teach you how to use it to fully benefit from all its functions.

You will also become more acquainted with the concept of number system and come to fully understand why this company is one of the best mattress sellers out there. Upon delivery and installing, you’re free to ask whatever questions you may have related to how the M7 works. You will be guided through all the steps required to adjust the firmness level for both sides of the bed.

Layers & Construction

It’s a bit strange how such a soft cushion can provide the firmness you need. As of January 2018, the upgraded i7 is the only memory foam mattress available at this retailer. And since you probably want to know what you’re spending this much money on, let’s discover what’s inside the M7. The mattress has a 12-inch profile, divided into several layers of comfort, each one with a very specific role in helping you rest.

Depending on which size you pick, you will receive a mattress with one or two air chambers, the latter option being available on the larger sizes. Beneath the air chamber, you have a 2-inch layer of foam to provide support for your body and to add a bit of extra height to the mattress. Above the air chamber lies a 4-inch layer of gel memory foam.

This feature is now unique to the M7 mattress. Not only does this layer of gel take the natural shape of your body and allows it to rest on good support, but it also keeps you cool. Sleep Number calls this the CoolFit technology and they have inserted it into this 4-inch layer of foam so that your skin will be able to breathe even when your body naturally starts sweating during hot summer nights.

The M7 combines polyester and rayon fabric to make the mattress soft and provide a decent level of breathability. On top of all these layers we mentioned lies a Sleep Number specific top. The flat cover is soft, allowing your body to sink in and your muscles to relax to a maximum. The M7 mattress benefits from the special Sleep IQ Technology and we’ll explain in another subsection what it is and how it works.

DualAir Technology

As mentioned above, the larger sizes of the M7 feature two air chambers, or DualAir technology, as the company likes to call it. Depending on the special number setting preferred by each of the 2 partners that share a bed, this technology allows the adjustment of the support and firmness of each side of the bed. There are special hoses used to pump air into each individual chamber. This technology is absolutely priceless when you’re sharing your bed with a sleeping partner that prefers a different firmness level than yours.

Sleep IQ Technology

This company has patented a technology called Sleep IQ. Thanks to it, you benefit from an integrated app that gathers information about your body while you’re sleeping. You can discover information such as heartbeat rate or sleep movements. You will be provided with a number of useful statistics that will help you understand if you’re sleeping as you should or what you need to adjust to get an even better night’s rest. The final result is the sweeping score, which you can later sync with other health apps.

Sleep Number

Also part of the Sleep IQ technology is the Sleep Number setting. This is an indicator of your mattresses’ firmness level, which can be adjusted individually for each side of the bed. Your sleep number can be anything from 1 to 100 and it shows the ideal setting for your body to get the rest it needs. When you purchase an M7 mattress, you will receive a remote control that allows you to adjust your side of the mattress to the optimal sleep number. Here is how it works: you will notice that there are very few buttons on the remote, which should make it very easy to adjust to what it does after a couple of uses.

In order to determine the best sleeping number for you, you will have to experiment with different settings.

To figure out what that number is, just lay down on one side, with the pillows adjusted to your sleeping position. Set the sleeping number to 100 and work your way down from there. The left and right buttons on the remote control will allow you to select the side of the bed that you currently want to customize. Then, by using the up and down arrows, you are free to shuffle between all levels from 100 and all the way down to 1, until you find a mattress set that suits you.

Firmness Levels

As you may have guessed by now, the adjustment of your Sleep Number will also determine the firmness of the mattress. If you like to rest on a high Sleep Number, the chamber underneath you will fill up with more air, thus giving the mattress a firmer feel. As you go down from 100, the mattress begins to feel softer and softer. So, as you’re shuffling through different sleep numbers, you’re actually adjusting the firmness level on your side of the bed.

Bases

No review of a Sleep Number mattress could ever be complete without talking about the FlexFit bases. Designed and sold by Sleep Number, these bases can enhance the usability of your M7 mattress, depending on which base model you choose:

  • FlexFit 1 is suitable for FlexTop Cal King, Standard Cal King and Split Cal King mattresses. Depending on which model you choose, you have a lot of cool features to benefit from. The one that particularly stands out is the fact that you can raise the head of your bed to an ideal position that allows you to lie down and read your favorite book or enjoy your favorite TV shows.
  • FlexFit 2 does more than just raise your head: it also raises your legs. Each side of the bed can be individually elevated at each of these 2 spots, except for the Standard Cal Kind model, which elevates both sides simultaneously.

  • FlexFit 3 is like the mother of all bed bases around the world. Yes, you get the individual head and foot elevation features, but you also get something more. The foot warming feature is a lifesaver during the winter when you crawl up into bed feeling all tired and chilly.  It also features under-bed lighting, which makes it easier for you get up during the night to go to the bathroom (or kitchen, depending on how fond you are of midnight snacks), without tripping over everything until you reach the light switch. The “zero gravity” feature will basically make you feel like you’re sleeping on the clouds… and that’s pretty much everything you can ask for after a long day of hard work.

Please note that every FlexFit base is sold separately and isn’t required for you to use the M7. You can still place the mattress on the bed base that you’re currently using.

Customer Opinions

Pain Relief

As expected, the M7 is popular among people who are looking for a good mattress to help solve different muscle and body pains. What we didn’t expect to see is how the M7 is a favorite amongst those who suffered car accidents. The mattress is actually a necessity when you’re experiencing limb pain, sore necks or back problems. When you sleep on a mattress that’s wrong for you, you can wake up with back problems even if they weren’t there when you went to sleep. Buyers of the M7 don’t experience any backaches and love that they can re-adjust the firmness at any time.

Foam Layers

A high number of customers have spoken about how well the foam layers adjust to the shape of their body. When the force in your back comes in contact with the force of the M7, everything feels just right. No backaches, no problem!

Sleep Number

As customers themselves have reported, this is THE mattress to buy when your sleeping partner has preferences that are different from yours. The M7 is a bridge between people who like soft and people who like firm mattresses. It can please a person with a sleep number of 40 and one with a sleep number of 80 with no issues whatsoever.

Dual Chambers

Since both you and your partner sleep on separate air chambers, one of you can toss and turn all night long without bothering the other one. This is a feature that pleases the customers who’ve bought the M7 because they needed something customizable on both sleeping sides.

Bottom Line

The M7 is the mattress that you’d probably welcome with open arms if it were free. But since its price tag is pretty spicy, you need to make sure that you’re spending money on a top-notch product. The fact that each side of the bed can be adjusted to a different firmness level, to cater to the need of each of the 2 sleeping partners is proof alone that the M7 is worth its money. It’s like buying 2 separate and customizable beds. So, if you like sleeping on a different firmness level than your partner, this product should be somewhere at the top of your buying list.

Moving on, you benefit from all those bits of integrated technology and smart bedding we’ve spoken about. Sleep IQ tracks and measures your body and your sleeping habits each night and allows you to sync the given information with other apps with just a couple of clicks here and there. The Sleep Number setup can easily be done with the included remote controls that allow for swift navigation between all the given numbers until you find one that’s most comfortable for you. The FlexFit bed bases can upgrade your M7 significantly, by adding individual elevation for your head and feet, an under the bed lighting system and even foot warmth.

Even if there are chances you won’t be able to get your hands on a brand new M7 mattress, remember that the i7 which is currently available on Sleep Number’s website is actually an upgrade, with more features and more integrated technology, all there to work in your favor.
