Serta Perfect Sleeper Hotel Concierge Suite II Firm

Shopping for a new mattress takes time and effort if you want to get it right. There are hundreds of companies on the market, especially since the bed-in-a-box idea has taken off. Newer companies have less experience in the industry. They therefore typically haven’t had enough time to develop enough products to cater to specific needs.

Newer companies with just one to three products making up their entire line often feature medium firmness. This is because it caters to the majority of people, and they are in the process of establishing their authority in the industry. However, there are people on the outer limits of the spectrum who require plusher or firmer settings. If you find yourself in the latter category, keep reading our complete Serta Perfect Sleeper Hotel Concierge Suite II review to see how it worked out for me. Some of the things we’ll look at include:

  • Firmness
  • Durability
  • Cooling capability
  • Edge support
  • Layer construction
  • And a whole lot more!

A Look at the Layers

Before you can fully understand and appreciate how the Perfect Sleeper Hotel Concierge works to offer comfort and support, you need to have an idea of what’s inside. This product is an example of a hybrid mattress. This means Serta combines different material types that complement one another to arrive at a combined unit that delivers specific qualities.

The layers are divided in a unique way that allows you to flip the mattress. This is a unique feature you don’t see often, and it works to increase durability. Just as you rotate your tires to even out the wear, when you can flip your mattress, you aren’t continually applying the majority of wear and tear on just one side. Let’s take a look at how this works.

The Cover

The quilted cover is very soft and comfortable to the touch. It’s made using Antimicrobial FireBlocker Fiber. This gives you a reasonable expectation of safety and hygiene. The first two layers of the mattress are included as part of the cover.

Flippable Layer Construction

You’ll notice that layers 7-11 repeat in reverse order the layers found above the coil unit. With the coils serving as the center, the layer lineup found on top are the same no matter which way you have it flipped.

Mattress Performance

This mattress features a unique layer combination, and I like that it allows for the mattress to be flipped. The cover is velvety to the touch, and, it is much firmer than what I’m used to. Many companies put a focus on appealing to the masses.

The online business model introduced many new brands into the market, but, when you’re working with a company like Serta that’s been in business for many decades, you benefit from the fact that they’ve had time to move on from more standard beds and onto products that cater toward a more specific demographic.

This bed offers a lot of support, and it’s attributed to the firm foams and coil unit in the center. If really feels like you’re floating on the top. If you like a firm feel or carry a lot of weight, I think you’ll enjoy how the composition works out, and it offers great bounce even though there is memory foam in the comfort layer.

You can also feel the use of the Posturized Center Third. The center of the coil unit considers the increased weight we typically carry in our hip area. On firm mattresses that don’t have this feature, you’re more prone to pressure points as your hips are pressing harder against a more resistant surface.

Although firm isn’t my preference, I think this mattress is a great option for those who need more support, and Serta was able to pack it all in just 12 inches.

Firmness & Sinkage Expectations

We’ve touched on the fact that this is a firm product. Although the indentation load deflections of the various layers are kept proprietary, we do get a look at the coil gauge of the innerspring unit. Interestingly, it’s 14 ¾. Considering that 12 is very firm and 15 is very plush, this wasn’t what I was expecting. This means the majority of the firmness is found in the many foam layers of the mattress.

Let’s take a look at how these numbers compare to other mattresses I’ve tried out. When I stand in the middle of the mattress, you can see I only sink in about five inches. On the top and bottom, I sink in about 4 ½. The differences here are due to the Posturized Center Third we discussed that considers extra weight in the hip area. In a standard medium product, I typically sink in around 6 ½ inches, so this is significantly firmer than that.

On a comfort scale with one being very firm and 10 being super plush, this product is rated a three. If you can sleep on the floor with minimal cushioning and wake up without aches and pains, this firmness level could be accommodating for you. It can also make for a great solution for stomach sleepers who suffer with their face sinking into the mattress, making breathing difficult.

Firmness and the Posturized Center Third

It’s difficult to detect just lying on the mattress, but the middle is just a little plusher than the top and bottom. This is because Serta incorporates a Posturized Center Third that accounts for the fact that we tend to carry more weight in our midsection. This allows for a little more give in this area to avoid painful pressure points.

Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being very plush and 10 being very firm, I give the Serta Perfect Sleeper Hotel Concierge Suite II a rating of 8.

Motion Transfer Reduction

When it comes to motion transfer, I was curious as to how this mattress would perform. Up until now, all the innerspring products I’ve tried have used individual coils that don’t have an impact on the others when someone gets on the bed.

In the case of the Concierge Suite II Firm by Serta, a continuous coil unit is used. This means the coils are all connected, so, if you sit down on one side of the mattress, the motion will more easily transfer. However, if you watch the video above, you’ll see as I drop a 20 pound medicine ball next to another of the same weight. Motion transfer is minimal.

I think the firm foams have a lot to do with this. Although we don’t know how many inches thick the coil unit is, the picture provided by Serta indicates it isn’t very thick. Despite this, however, it’s still very effective at offering bounce. I’m very impressed at how well the foams do at absorbing the shock. If you have a sleep partner, I think you’ll be pretty happy with the degree of motion isolation offered by this product.

Heat Transfer Capability

We often envision wrapping up in a warm blanket when we think of sleep. However, did you realize you actually need to attain a slightly lower-than-normal body temperature in order to enter the most restorative sleep stages?

In effort to keep their product sleeping cool, Serta incorporates two primary measures in the design of the Perfect Sleeper Hotel Concierge Suite II:

  • Coil unit that breathes well by design
  • Cool Twist Gel Foam

To put this to the test, I laid on the mattress for a half hour in a room temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit to see how long it would take for the mattress to cool back down. On average, this process takes 10 minutes, but this Serta model only took eight. If you suffer with hot sleeping, this product performed better than average and is well worth considering, especially if you prefer a firm sleep surface.

I was able to sleep cool on this product. These two measures did well at preventing hot sleep, and the fact that I didn’t sink into the layers prevented excessive engagement with the layers, which can lead to sweating.

Edge Support

When it comes to proper edge support, there are a couple of reasons to get excited about the Hotel Concierge firm by Serta. For starters, the coil unit is very sturdy and does a good job at holding up. Furthermore, the Total Edge Foam Encasement is specifically-geared toward edge support and the extension of the sleep surface.

When edge support is lacking, it can make it easy to slip off the side if you sleep too close to the edge, and getting in and out of bed becomes more difficult as you sink into the mattress layers. Mobility in this bed is excellent, and I feel very well supported sitting on various areas of the edge as well as lying down.

Durability Expectations

Let’s take a moment to discuss the durability you can expect. We would normally analyze the densities of the foams to make this determination, but this information is proprietary. However, there are other indicators that I think give us reasonable confidence this product will hold up:

A good mattress can last seven to ten years, and Serta offers a 10 year limited warranty that covers manufacturing-related issues. This shows their confidence that the product is built to last.

  • The coil count in the queen model is 800. You don’t want anything under 400, and 800 and above indicates good durability.
  • The coil count in the queen model is 800. You don’t want anything under 400, and 800 and above indicates good durability.
  • The mattress is flippable, so you’re not continually wearing out the same side.
  • With so many measures taken to ensure durability, I think you’re getting a good value.

Bed Frame Tip- Learn from Experience!

Word to the wise – if you use a wooden frame, it could cause staining to the bottom of your mattress. This isn’t usually a big deal, but, since this product is flippable, it won’t look good.

I used a wooden slatted base in the past, and it left stripes across the bottom of my favorite mattress. If you think this could be an issue with your base, I’d recommend a mattress protector that wraps around the entire mattress. You could also consider placing a protective sheet in between the mattress and frame.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Hotel Concierge Suite II Firm Reviews and Feedback

With so many options out there, it can be difficult to make the decision on which mattress to ultimately go with. There are so many newer companies offering interesting technologies and features. However, sometimes the tried and tested model is the way to go.

Serta has been in the business for more than 70 years, and they have a long-standing reputation in the industry you can count on. Since they have such a significant head start on the newer companies, they’ve had time to build up a more extensive inventory of mattress models, and this makes it easier for people who don’t fall into the average category to find what they really need. Our Final Verdict

This product is an excellent example of a firm mattress. There’s evidence to believe the foams feature high ILDs to keep you well supported. I love the fact that you can flip this product. It also features a coil count of 800. You want at least 400 with 800+ being a good indicator of durability. Serta does an excellent job balancing out support and comfort for a firm mattress feel, and it did great at isolating motion to the point of impact despite the use of an innerspring unit.
