Puffy Original vs. Puffy Lux- At a Glance

We’ll get more in-depth as to the differences between them, but Puffy does offer two options. Their original mattress is a little firmer, so this could be a good option if you like to sleep on your stomach. However, it can very well be worth the extra money to consider the Lux option.

Puffy Lux Layer Lineup

Stain-Resistant Cover

We always like to get started with an inside look at the layer lineup. The cover is stain resistant to help keep it looking good, and it really captures the feeling of luxury that Puffy’s going for in its silky softness.

The damage done by spills is mitigated by the design as you can see when I poured some water over it. It just kind of fell off the material, and you can watch this in action in the video above. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t employ caution when drinking a glass of red wine on your mattress, but the feature does help keep it in good condition.

Comfort Layers

When we remove the cover, we can see the total 12-inch thickness is split up into four layers starting with the 1 ½” of Cooling Cloud™ Foam. Its design helps prevent temperature fluctuations from changing the feeling of your mattress as is typical in memory foam.

I’ve had more than one person ask questions about how a mattress reacts in cold or warm temperatures, and visco foams do tend to soften when warm and harden when cold. The first layer helps prevent this change from being very noticeable, so, if you live in an extreme climate, I think this could be a good option.

The next 1 ½” of Body Adapting Dual Cloud Foam is intended to contour the body and work with the top layer in providing deep pressure relief. It’s the primary additional component that sets the Lux apart from the original Puffy mattress. Keep reading to learn how this impacts price and durability expectations.

Support Layers

Next, we begin to transition away from memory foam as we reach the 2” layer of ClimateComfort Foam™. It serves to begin offering a higher degree of support as we make our way to the final and thickest 7” layer of Firm Core Support Foam.

Puffy Lux Feel and Performance

Now that you’ve had a look inside, let’s talk about how this particular foam construction feels. I really like the softness of the cover, but, as comfy as it feels, you should still use a sheet or even mattress protector to prevent stains over time. I think the combination of two types of visco foam in the comfort layer do an excellent job providing contour, and this is a big deal for side sleepers and those who suffer with problems like lower back pain.

Puffy does a really nice job at working with the support layers to adjust to unique pressure points, and this can be difficult to achieve. It can be easy for a mattress to go too far on contour and lack support and vice versa, leading to issues like back problems and tossing and turning. Overall, I think the performance of the Puffy Lux is ideal for anyone who has issues trying to find the perfect sleep position.

Firmness and Contour Expectations

In our unboxing, I mentioned that the mattress felt like a standard medium. Now that I’ve had plenty of time to try it out, I’d say it falls closer to the plush end of the spectrum. I think this is very reflective of the Puffy Plush Dual Cloud layer and its unique pairing with plush visco and polyfoams in the comfort layer.

We would normally take a look at the indentation load deflection of each layer to get an idea of what to expect, but these numbers aren’t provided, so we took a look at the combined unit using our firmness and contour testing tool.

• Adding weight in twenty five pound increments, we can get an idea of how the mattress performs in the lighter areas like the extremities and heavier areas like the hips and shoulders.
• This allows us to consider how it will perform for different body types.

Using our data, we see that the Puffy Lux is one of the plusher products I’ve tried out recently.

It’s very comparable to the Layla plush setting and Leesa in terms of firmness. This can be a great fit for people with a BMI under 25 as well as for side sleepers who have trouble with pressure points.

Contour Analysis

Taking a look at how you can expect to experience contour, let’s examine a graph that helps us understand.

1. Blue line represents contour of the extremities
2. Red line represents shoulders
3. Yellow line represents the hips.

In the case of the Puffy Lux, you can see there is a pretty steady progression from one area of the body to the next. This makes it a good fit for body types where the weight is evenly distributed. For ladies, that would include hourglass and banana shapes, and for men this would be the ovals and rectangles.

Motion Transfer Reduction

If you have a sleep partner, you want to make sure the two of you can move without bothering each other. Products made of all foam are typically a good choice for high motion isolation, and we also have the advantage of a product that is 25% visco foam.

When I drop a 20 pound medicine ball next to another of equal weight, the motion transfer is visibly very minimal, and you can take for yourself in the video above. There’s no innerspring unit to cause excess bounce.

Quick Note for Those with Serious Mobility Disabilities

If you have serious mobility issues, you may find this reduced bounce paired with the plushness makes it a little bit more difficult to get in and out of bed. In your case, you should check products with an innerspring unit or latex in the comfort layers. However, in terms of motion transfer reduction, I think the Puffy Lux a good consideration for sleep partners.

Heat Transfer Performance

Cool sleeping is a big concern because we need our body temperature to drop slightly in order to make the most of rapid eye movement sleep. This is the sleep stage where the most restorative processes in the body take place.

In products with visco foam located so close to the sleep surface, we always like to see what measures were taken to prevent heat buildup since traditional memory foam was known to sleep hot. The Puffy Lux takes a multifaceted approach:

1. Climate-adaptive materials help if you live in an extreme climate in terms of contraction and expansion. It also prevents temperature fluctuations to keep you comfortable.
2. The patent pending CoolingCloud™ in the first layer draws heat out of the mattress and away from your body. The gel infusion is claimed to allow the Puffy Lux to breath more than eight times better than other online mattresses.
3. Layer three picks up with ClimateComfort™ foam that keeps your temperature stabilized. This means that, not only does it give off a gentle cooling effect when it’s hot, but you also experience a slight warming effect when your environment is cool. I think this is a unique consideration since we do receive questions about cool sleeping from time to time.

If you do occasionally struggle with being too cold at night, this might be worth trying out. If you’re not really sure one way or the other and just want to see how this mattress measures up compared with the more than 60 mattresses I’ve tried out, we observed the cooldown process to get an idea of how quickly the mattress is able to dissipate heat when the source is removed.

After lying on my Puffy Lux for a half hour, it took the mattress seven minutes to cool back down to a 64 degree Fahrenheit temperature. Ten minutes is average, so the Lux mattress performed about 30% quicker. Overall, I think Puffy was successful in their heat reducing efforts, and I do recommend this product for hot and cold sleepers.

Edge Support

As we consider edge support, keep in mind this mattress is made entirely of foam. These products typically don’t perform as well as those containing innerspring units, but the support base is still usually strong enough to keep you well supported lying down.

If you tend to sit on the edge, you can see I am pretty well supported. I don’t bottom out on the edges, and I can even sit on the very corner without bottoming out. For a foam mattress, the Puffy Lux does very well and is pretty typical for a foam product over 10 inches thick.

Durability: How Long Will the Puffy Lux Last?

Let’s talk for a moment about durability expectations. If you’ve taken a look at the website, you’ll see Puffy offers two models. We have the original Puffy mattress pictured here to the left, and you can see it’s a little thinner than the Lux model. This is because it lacks the second layer of Body Adapting Dual Cloud Foam.

Although this is only a 1 ½” inch layer comprising only about 13% of the total layer lineup, we can see the price more than doubles as we upgrade to the Lux model, so let’s talk about why that is.

The densities of the foams aren’t provided, and this is what we use to examine quality, so I extracted square inch cubes of foam and took them to the lab to gather this data for myself. Following are my calculations:

Note on Margin of Error on Foam Extractions

If you’ve ever tried to cut a piece of foam, you know it can be a little tricky. Although my extractions were very close to square inch cubes, there is a margin of error to consider. However, in foams, there are standards, and each calculation fell very close to a standard mark. Here’s what we typically see in foams:

Is the Puffy Lux Worth the Price Hike?

The Lux version adds the Body Adapting Dual Cloud Foam as a second layer to work with the top visco layer. We found the density of this layer to weigh in at four pcf, and this indicates high quality.

The top layers will undergo the most compression over time, so the addition of this higher-quality material so close to the top will increase your mattress durability significantly. The pricing of both models are very reflective of the level of quality you can expect.

Having tried out both versions of this mattress, I was impressed with the adaptations incorporated into the Puffy Lux. Our Final Verdict

If you do have serious mobility issues, I think you may have better luck with something containing an innerspring unit or latex as foam mattresses can tend to lack bounce, but that’s really the only negative thing I have to say about the Puffy Lux.

If you plan to use your Puffy Lux in a climate where it gets excessively hot or cold, I think you’ll appreciate the CoolingCloud™ foam’s ability to counter visco foam’s natural tendency to contract and expand. This product is made in the USA and hand-crafted with quality materials and manufacturing standards, so you can reasonably expect it to last. All foams are CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified. Overall, I think the Puffy Lux is on par with the price considering its quality.
