Naturepedic Crib Mattress

The concern for the possible chemical effects on our children is growing among health professionals, public safety officials, physicians and environmental advocacy groups. Over the past few decades, certain chemicals and PBDE’s have been removed and/or banned from baby mattresses due to the suspicion that these toxic chemicals are playing a large role in the sudden increase of childhood disorders. This is why organic crib mattresses are becoming increasingly popular, such as the Naturepedic Organic Cotton Classic 150 Coil Seamless 2-stage mattress.

The Naturepedic Promise

Naturepedic promises to give your baby a mattress that promotes a non-toxic design, natural and organic materials, fire-safety, and overall health and safety. They are also manufactured to provide a lasting quality workmanship thanks to their extensive research. They are firm believers that Mother Nature makes the best materials for a healthier and more comfortable sleep. Giving yourself and your child that healthier sleeping environment is what counts the most to Naturepedic. All of the Naturepedic products have been designed with the help of engineers, chemists, and pediatricians. They are also constructed by Amish craftsmen in Naturepedic’s GOTS certified factory in Ohio.

Presenting The No-Compromise™

The No-Compromise™ has everything you would want in an organic crib mattress which can be hard to find in a traditional mattress that is non-toxic. It provides your child with a much safer, healthy, and comfortable sleeping environment while being durable. Its insides contain only the purest form of cotton, which is a healthier substitute to alternative or synthetic foams and fabrics. It is only grown in the U.S. and is certified organic and Naturepedic only buys their materials from USDA certified sources to ensure purity and organic reliability.

The No-Compromise™ has been tested for chemical emissions, has an allergy friendly design, bed bug/dust mite barrier, and has a 2-stage dual firmness. Not many mattresses can make those claims and hold true to them.

Thoughts About The Packaging

So, the outside of the packaging (the box) is nothing to really talk about, but once you actually open the box, that’s a whole different story. Once you get the mattress out of the box, you’ll notice the Naturepedic stickers and informational insert wrap.

On that informational insert you will find all of the important stuff that you would need to know about the No Compromise™. You will also see all of those certification stickers that show that the mattress is organic, GREENGUARD Gold certified, etc. The packaging is definitely more informational than others that I have come across and it also gives a lot of valuable information that someone would need to know about their new mattress. I find it very helpful that these companies include them because then I don’t have to rush to the computer to figure everything out.

Features & Benefits

Here is the section in which I tell you everything you need to know about the Naturepedic No Compromise™.

What Sets It Apart?

There are many things that set this crib mattress apart from others that I have had the pleasure of reviewing. One of the main things is that they work with pediatricians to help give children the safest crib mattress possible.

Naturepedic also backs all of their product development with scientific data and are regularly tested for chemical emissions. They carry the most awards and endorsements of any children’s mattress company. Not only that, but they also have the best warranty around. One other thing that I want to mention is that this crib mattress is organic while having coil innersprings on the inside. Not many crib mattresses have this feature which helps add durability to the product.

Construction & Composition

Here, I am going to give you a look at what is inside of the Naturepedic No Compromise™ crib mattress.

The Certified Organic Cotton is the purest around and grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms. Naturepedic only uses U.S. grown and certified organic fillings. This is a great alternative to foams that are chemically treated and latex which is allergy prone.

Food-Grade Polyethylene is used for the surface of all the waterproof mattresses from Naturepedic. This is a type of plastic that is used to package food because of its purity and non-toxic properties. This Polyethylene is specially formulated to meet food contact standards. Along with that, it is also the easiest to clean and highly stain resistant. It will also help to provide a barrier for dust mites and other allergens.

The steel innerspring is made of the highest quality and provide heavy duty support without any kind of allergy or health concerns. This mattress has a 150 coil innerspring that features 13 gauge coils and a 9 gauge border wire. The heavier the coil, the better the mattress durability and support will be.

The fibers in the crib mattress are made with Non-GMO potato-starch PLA batting which is made entirely from plants. It does not have an off-gas or harmful chemicals and it is used in food packaging. Not only that, but it is also used in a variety of biomedical applications such as stents, sutures, and drug delivery devices. The PLA is an excellent alternative to petroleum products.

The fire protection is also chemical free, but how can that be? Well, they believe that the best form of fire protection is to provide a superior product design that avoids the need for the harmful chemicals in the first place. Organic cotton is less flammable and after extensive research, they eliminated the need for fire retardant chemicals and FR barriers all together while meeting all Federal and State flammability standards.

Comfort

Let’s face it, if your child isn’t comfortable, neither are you. Well, that’s how it works in my house. Comfort is huge for my toddler. If he is even the slightest bit uncomfortable, he is going to spend the night tossing, turning, and whining. The Naturepedic No Compromise™ provided him with a safe and comfortable sleeping surface.

He was able to sleep on it without feeling uncomfortable and for the first time in weeks, he was sleeping through the night. Thank you for that, Naturepedic! The innersprings make for a sturdy, yet comfortable, mattress with just the right amount of give and bounce. It isn’t comparable to a stone but it won’t make the child sink in like a memory foam mattress would. For a toddler, that would be okay to sleep on, but not for a baby who needs the proper support to help with development, which leads me to my next topic.

Support

The No Compromise™ offers top quality support for your infant and toddler. The 2-stage dual firmness gives your infant a firm side for proper sleeping and development while the toddler side has a slighter less firmness with some cushion.

This offers specialized attention based on the stage of the child. This means that it is going to be safe for babies and comfortable for toddlers. The heavy duty 150 coil innerspring helps to provide this firm flat surface that provides the ideal support needed for your child. It also follows in accordance with pediatrician and Consumer Product Safety Commission firmness recommendations.

While my child was sleeping on it, I didn’t notice any kind of sagging or indentations, which to me, would indicate that the proper support is provided for him, even on the toddler side.

Two-Finger Test

The two-finger test is one of the first things I do when I put the crib mattress in the crib. If you aren’t sure what that is, it is when I measure the gap between the mattress and crib rail with my pointer and middle finger.

If I can fit more than two fingers in the gap, it is unsafe for my child. The reason for this is because that gap could be a suffocation risk for a baby. Once they start rolling over, they may be capable of rolling to the side and becoming entrapped in that gap. They could also get other limbs trapped in there. As for the Naturepedic No Compromise™ crib mattress, it passed the two-finger test. Check it out for yourself!

Edge Support

The No Compromise™ offers exceptional edge support. This is something that is very important to me because once my child starts to sleep in a toddler bed, there isn’t going to be that side rail to keep him from falling out of bed. I know it is bound to happen, but if there is enough edge support, it can help to reduce those occurrences.

This crib mattress has coil lined edges which makes them super sturdy and firm. I can press down with all of my weight and those edges won’t budge. This also reassures me that in the future, after being used for a while, the edges will be intact. Edge support can also help to reduce the suffocation risk for babies. When babies first start to roll over, they may roll to the edge of the crib. If there is no edge support, the baby could become trapped between the mattress and the crib if there is also a gap.

Corners

Sometimes, the corners of the crib mattresses can be a deal breaker when it comes time to put it in the crib. If the mattress is a little shorter than it is suppose to be, rounded edges could cause a gap issue. It could also cause the mattress to move around more than it should.

The No Compromise™ has square corners which help the mattress to fit securely in the crib without creating extra movement. The only thing that worries me with square corners is that sometimes, if the material is bunched from where it is sewn, it is kind of sharp.

Fortunately, this mattress does not have that issue. It would worry me even more once it came time to use it for the toddler bed since the corners are more exposed, but once I ran my hands over those corners, all of my worries went away. The corners are actually quite soft and patted down enough so that it will not cause a problem in the future.

Seams

As per the name, this crib mattress is seamless, which is great. My son is the type of kid that likes to pull on everything, including small threads. He will pull on them until they are all unraveled-not good. So, that is another thing that makes the No Compromise™ such a great mattress. Also, if there are no seams, there are no areas where the mattress can split. This, again, adds to the durability and longevity of it.

I inspected every single part of this mattress and I can say for sure that there are absolutely no seams in sight. I have encountered crib mattresses that had seams right out in the open that could easily be pulled by small fingers. This is a huge no-no for me because I have had some frightening experiences with loose threads on a baby blanket.

Ease Of Transport

Moving a crib mattress to and from the crib is tiring, especially in the middle of the night. There are going to be crib sheet changes, mattress wipe downs, rotations and more. This is one reason why I like to discuss the ease of transport. Unfortunately, this mattress is a hefty 20 pounds. I had some difficulty getting it in and out of the crib. I can’t say for sure that everyone is going to have the same problem, but for me, it was quite the battle. I can say that the heftiness of the mattress comes from those innerspring coils that are on the inside. This adds a lot of weight to the mattress. Once your child is in the toddler bed, it will be much easier to move around because you won’t have to pick it up over the rails.

How Does It Feel?

The way it feels is important to me because if I don’t like the way it feels, I won’t put my child on it. The No Compromise™ feels like vinyl. It makes the same sound, feels the same, but isn’t completely the same since it’s organic and not made from Vinyl. It does make a sound when you rub your hand against it, but this will be cancelled out once the crib sheet is placed on it. My son didn’t really notice the way it feels when I placed him on it without a sheet. It did not make a difference to the way he slept.

Bounce

I like crib mattresses to have a little bit of bounce to them. If they have bounce, that means that they aren’t too firm for my child. If I can toss a bowling ball on it and it bounces, it’s okay in my book. If a crib mattress has too much bounce, it either means that it is not supportive enough or it isn’t firm enough for the baby.

When baby moves around, the bounce could move them around even more and cause a disturbance. We don’t want that, do we? The No Compromise™ does have a small amount of bounce to the infant side and more bounce on the toddler side. My son slept just fine on it and I didn’t notice him bouncing around too much when he would move in his sleep.

Temperature Regulation Features

There really aren’t any specific temperature regulation features for this mattress. This does not mean that it is going to sleep hot or cold, it just means that this mattress is more directed towards the organic aspect rather than temperature regulation.

My son sleeps on the warm side, but with the summer months here, the bedroom is always kept cool with the help of our trusty air conditioner. Honestly, I think that this is going to be one of those mattresses that may retain heat but not make your child have night sweats at the same time. Let’s see how it did in the next section.

Heat Retention

The amount of heat that a mattress holds is very important to me. My children all sleep above normal temperatures, which makes them sweat if it is too hot. My toddler has a sweating issue and mattresses that hold heat, don’t do very well for him. Fortunately, the air conditioner keeps him cool enough so that the heat retention doesn’t bother him. I did a test on both the infant side and the toddler side of the mattress.

Unfortunately, they both recorded above average temperatures. The toddler side took 44 seconds to cool down from 130 degrees to 98 degrees and the infant side took 30 seconds. The average is around 20-25 seconds. This does not mean that your child is going to sweat at night, this just means that there is more insulation inside. This can be a good thing when it comes time for those cooler months.

Your child will stay naturally warm instead of having a blanket on them which can lead to suffocation if they are infants. For those warmer month, if you find your child is sweating, the air conditioner works wonders for me. If that isn’t an option for you, there’s always the option of a cooling mattress pad for cribs.

Odor

As expected, there was no odor. With some mattresses, there is a strong odor that can come with the plastic packaging or with the mattress itself. Since there are no chemicals in this mattress, there is no odor to be emitted. I have encountered mattresses that had a foul odor and lingered for days. This crib mattress is completely odor free, which makes for a much healthier sleeping environment.
