Hope Latex Mattress by My Green Mattress

If you carry a lot of weight or have a sleep partner, it can be hard to find a mattress that doesn’t wear out quickly. We’ve looked at products by My Green Mattress in the past, and they generally do a great job in providing natural sleep solutions that hold up and accommodate the three primary sleeping positions well.

Today, we’re taking a look at their Hope latex model. This product was designed with an excellent contour in mind without compromising on support, a great combination for anyone who struggles with pressure points. It can also help reduce the symptoms associated with disorders like arthritis and scoliosis.

One of my favorite aspects of this product is the fact that it’s handcrafted and manufactured using renewable resources. This mattress is also GOTS/GOLS certified – so not only is this good for the environment, but it also makes for a mattress that should last. Keep reading to learn more about durability, heat transfer, edge support, and a whole lot more!

Three Layers of All-Natural Latex

The Cover

The cover of this product is unique in that it is made without the use of chemical flame retardants, some of which have been linked to the development of cancer.

This can be tricky since the government requires all mattresses to pass burn tests.

My Green Mattress stays in compliance through the use of natural wool that is quilted into the organic cotton cover. Since wool is a natural flame retardant, it keeps you safe and has enabled this product to pass both the open flame and cigarette tests.

Three Transitional Layers

Enveloped within the cover are three transitional layers of 100% organic Dunlop latex. You can learn more about latex and how it’s made in our complete guide. In a nutshell, though, it’s a really unique material in that it offers contour without compromising on the bounce. This is a common hangup when it comes to memory foam.

  • Layer One
    • 2-inches
    • Plush
  • Layer Two
    • 3-inches
    • Medium firm
  • Layer Three
    • 3-inches
    • Firm

The total mattress thickness is 8-inches, and all three layers are GOLS Certified Organic.

More About the Latex

My Green Mattress only uses 100% all-natural latex from the APRICO rubber tree plantation in their mattresses. This plantation is based in Sri Lanka and home to more than five million rubber trees. Aside from their GOLS certification, they are guaranteed by the Control Union of Europe to be made of raw materials grown responsibly and free of damaging or harmful procedures or chemicals. You can also rest assured knowing My Green Mattress’ latex is:

  • Free of petroleum-based ingredients, pesticides, or harsh chemicals
  • Not synthetic or blended with fillers, dyes, or adhesives
  • Not made from the sap of rubber trees able to be grown in the United States

Impressive Heat Transfer Results

Hot sleeping prevents you from entering REM sleep, so you don’t want a mattress that retains body heat. If you’ve struggled with hot sleeping in the past, I think you’ll be very impressed with the results of our heat transfer test. This mattress was able to cool off 35% faster than the others I’ve tried out.

During our thorough review, we’ll get into detail about the many aspects you need to explore before you make your purchase. A new mattress is a large investment, especially if you’re looking for one that’ll last. Just a few other things we’ll examine include:

  • Details of the layer lineup
  • Firmness
  • Performance
  • Durability
  • And a whole lot more!

Note for People with Latex Allergies

If you have a latex allergy, keep in mind most issues arise as a result of direct contact. Many people with latex sensitivity are able to use a latex mattress with no issues. It can be helpful to thicken the barrier by adding a mattress protector and sheets.

If you’re unsure, My Green Mattress will provide a free sample that can be taped to your arm overnight at your doctor’s discretion to observe for a reaction.

Hope Latex Mattress Performance

Having had a look inside the Hope latex mattress, let’s take just a moment to talk about the feel. I like the fact that there wasn’t much off-gassing, and this is pretty typical in natural products.

You might notice natural odors from the wool and organic cotton, and this is more noticeable in humid areas. It should wear off within a couple of days. If it bothers you, just let it air out before using it.

Lying on it, you can definitely pick up on the contour of the comfort layer, but the overall firmness is higher than a standard medium. I think the combination of plush, medium, and firm foams do a good job in providing contour without compromising on overall support.

This is good since the mattress is only 8-inches thick. The cover is soft and comfortable, and the bounciness of the latex makes it really easy to move around. I think the feel is a good fit for anyone who likes the feeling they’re floating on top of their mattress but don’t want a bed that’s too firm.

Firmness & Sinkage Expectations

Speaking of firmness, let’s get an idea of what you can expect. The rating is medium firm, so let’s see what that looks like. To compare it to other products we’ve tested, I stood in the middle to examine how much sinkage my vertical weight would produce.

Sinkage Test

An average medium mattress produces around 6 ½ inches of sinkage, but you can see there are only 5 ½ inches of sinkage with the Hope mattress. This is pretty reflective of a firm product. As we discussed, however, this isn’t the stiff, rigid kind of firm you may be thinking that’s common with certain foams and innerspring units. Again, this is thanks to the clever lineup of latex layers.

A Look at ILD

We can further examine the firmness to get an idea of what to expect by looking at the indentation load deflection of each layer. You can check out our complete ILD guide if you want to fully understand how this measurement works, but, for the purposes of this review, all you really need to know is that 12 is very soft and 50 is very firm.

  • Layer 1- 15-20
  • Layer 2- 25-30
  • Layer 3- 40

Considering the various layer thicknesses with a weighted calculation, the average ILD for the Hope latex mattress is around 30, so this is a little more on the firm end of our spectrum. If you’ve shied away from firm products in the past due to a lack of contour but suffer from back issues, I think this could be an excellent solution.

Motion Isolation Performance

Like edge support, motion transfer is another key concept sleep partners need to consider as they shop. In a nutshell, you want to minimize the ability for energy exerted by a moving person to transfer through the mattress to a resting person.

Latex products are naturally very good at keeping motion isolated to the point of impact, and this is depicted well when I drop a 20-pound medicine ball from eye level next to a resting one. You can see the results in the video review above. Since the product uses latex instead of innersprings, you get the motion isolating properties you’re looking for without compromising on the bounce.

Heat Transfer Capability- Above Average Performance

Heat transfer capability is often overlooked during mattress shopping, and this really is unfortunate since your ability to sleep deeply is highly dependent on your body’s ability to cool slightly below 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s why we always take a look at the breathability of each mattress we test with our thermal imaging camera.

After lying on my Hope latex mattress for a half hour in a controlled temperature, it only took 6 ½ minutes for it to cool back down. On average, this process takes about 10 minutes, so the Hope latex was able to cool off 35% quicker than average.

Latex is known for its advanced cooling capabilities, so I was expecting it to cool off pretty quickly. If you sleep hot, I think you’ll be very pleased with the Hope latex mattress’ ability to keep you sleeping cool.

Edge Support

Edge support in latex is a unique concept. This product doesn’t feature innersprings or edge support reinforcement foams, and you can see the resulting lack in edge support. In the various areas and positions, you might find yourself on, you can see you pretty well bottom out. It doesn’t help that this product is only 8-inches thick.

With that being said, latex is a unique material. Where it lacks in edge support it makes up for in its ability to keep you and your sleep partner from sinking into the middle of the mattress, a feature that can easily lack in memory foam despite excellent edge support.

I’m currently using a mattress that has very strong edge support, but it’s starting to develop an indentation that causes sleep partners to wind up sinking together into the middle. Because of the Hope mattress’ ability to prevent this, I think sleep partners, despite the lack of edge support, could still benefit.

Durability: Will the Hope Mattress Last?

You are making a pretty big investment in your next mattress, so you definitely don’t want to overlook durability expectations. When it comes to latex, you can rest assured you’re working with one of the most durable materials available. It typically outlasts materials like memory foam.

Since it comprises the entire layer lineup, this is good news. Furthermore, the cover is made of natural materials, another plus in terms of longevity. The mattress also doesn’t have a weight limit. If you’re looking for a product that’ll hold up, this is about as good as it gets.

Maintenance, Protection, Care, & Warranty

My Green Mattress recommends you spin your mattress head to toe once a month for the first six months and then once every three to four months after that for maximum durability. If you think this could be the right product for you, here’s some information you’ll need as a customer:

Cost

It’s worth noting that latex is not a rigid material, so, when you try to pick up this mattress, it kind of flops in on itself. If you need to move it, make sure you have someone on hand to help.

Considering this product’s durability expectations, comfort, and above average heat transfer capability, I think it’s well worth the asking price. My Green Mattress does offer to finance through Affirm for qualifying buyers, so that makes acquiring your new mattress a lot easier.

Size Price
Twin $829
Twin XL $889
Full $1,099
Full XL $1,299
Queen $1,299
King $1,519

Hope Mattress Reviews and Feedback

Although it’s not very thick, don’t let that fool you into thinking this mattress is only for kids or people who don’t carry much weight. The triple latex layer lineup makes for a product highly capable of offering excellent support. Don’t let the low edge support give you the wrong impression!

To give you an idea of what other people have had to say about their experience with the Hope latex mattress, here’s a list of pros and cons based on other online reviews:

Who We Recommend the Hope Latex Mattress For

If you’ve struggled in the past with mattresses that quickly develop indentations or sag in the middle, I think the Hope latex is a good one to consider. Latex features a highly breathable cell structure as we saw in our heat transfer test, and it often outperforms materials like memory foam while still providing excellent conforming properties.

If you aren’t happy with the way it feels, My Green Mattress also sells toppers, and their customer service reps can help you decide what would work in your specific situation. I think it could be a great consideration if you:

  • Struggle with pressure points
  • Have a sleep partner who moves around a lot
  • Enjoy all-natural sleep products
  • Sleep hot
  • Have back problems

Our Final Verdict

Keep in mind, it can take longer to break in latex than some other materials, so it’s best to take advantage of the entire trial period to see if you’ll like it. Since you have 100 nights to try it out, you have plenty of time to make that decision. However, if, after that time, you find you just aren’t happy with it, the Hope latex mattress is backed by a 10-year, non prorated warranty.

I have had a positive experience with My Green Mattress in the past, and they have once again delivered a quality sleep product that I have no problem endorsing with my seal of approval. Considering the excellent heat transfer, motion isolation, and durability, I think this mattress is a home run for anyone who has struggled in the past with indentation development and hot sleeping.
