One of the most attractive aspects of the bed in a box concept is the often very extensive sleep trial. However, what happens when your trial is over and your mattress is a little too firm for your long-term needs? Maybe you have a sleep partner with a medical need for a firmer sleep surface.

Whatever your need for a plusher sleep surface, you don’t necessarily have to buy a new mattress. The two-inch topper from My Green Mattress is a great way to add a little extra hug and bounce to any sleep surface, and I’ve been using mine for the past several weeks now on a gentle firm mattress.

As the name implies, this product uses natural materials. Let’s talk about what that means for you and see if this could provide the tune up your mattress needs.

My Green Mattress Topper: First Impressions

Some people like the sinking feeling you get from memory foam. If this isn’t you, the My Green Mattress topper could be for you.

Latex is very well known for its bouncy qualities. If you move around a lot or have mobility issues that make it hard to get in and out of bed, this is a big plus. I can definitely feel an increase in the contour over how this firm mattress performs on its own.

When you release pressure, the topper responds very quickly. You can see for yourself in the video above. You can expect offgassing to clear off pretty quickly, and the cover is very soft, providing a luxurious feel against your skin.

What Does It Do?

The mattress below my topper is about 20 percent firmer than a standard medium mattress. Using my topper, I am able to experience a much higher degree of contour. If you don’t carry much weight and sleep on a firmer sleep surface, I think this could offer that buffer you need without replacing your mattress.

Maybe firmness isn’t an issue. If you’ve noticed minor sagging in your comfort layers but you still have good support, the My Green Mattress Topper can extend your mattress’s lifespan while offering proper comfort. Remember, though, this product is only two inches thick. If your sagging is any deeper than this, it may be time to seek out a new mattress.

I really love the bounceback you get from the natural Dunlop latex. People who don’t like memory foam often love latex. If you’re not quite sure, check out the article I wrote that tells you everything you need to know about latex.

If you suffer from aches and pains, have a partner who moves around a lot, or appreciate natural products, I think you’ll be pretty happy with what you get in My Green Mattress’s approach on the topper.

Features & Benefits

What Sets the My Green Mattress Topper Apart?

Toppers made of memory foam can be too sinky for some sleepers. This is especially true for heavier people. The My Green Mattress topper stands apart from many others on the market in that it focuses more on the additional bounce. Using latex, this ensures you also get great contour. I think you’ll also be very impressed with its ability to sleep cool, which we’ll cover next!

Heat Transfer Capability

If you sleep hot, I think you’ll be impressed with how this product measures up. Latex, in general, does pretty well in terms of breathability, unlike certain foams. I slept nice and cool every time I used it, but that’s subjective, so I put it to the test using my thermal imaging camera.

I lied on the My Green Mattress topper for a half hour and monitored how long it took the topper to return to room temperature. It takes an average mattress around 10 minutes to go through this process. However, the particular mattress I used in this test took 12 ½.

Using the topper, cooldown time decreased by 28 percent. It only took nine minutes to cool back down. If you have trouble with hot sleeping on your current mattress but are otherwise happy with it, I think this could be an affordable fix.

Is It Comfy? A Look at the Feel

Remember, the feel of your current mattress will have a large impact on your experience. If you’re trying to correct large indentations, it’s probably time for a new mattress.

However, if you just need to plush up a firmer product and like a bouncy feel, this topper should make your list of top choices. If you’re looking for something with a stronger focus on deep contour and hug, check out some of our top suggestions on memory foam toppers.

Firmness

The firmness you experience is going to be heavily dependent on your mattress. Since it’s only two inches thick, you’re going to sink completely into your mattress topper, so you can expect an extra two inches of sinkage over what your mattress naturally provides.

If your mattress is very firm, you can expect more of a medium feel. Medium mattresses will move more into the firmer end of the plush spectrum while an already plush mattress will become even plusher.

Keep in mind that you do need some support. It’s common for people who like it plush to go too far in adding multiple toppers and pads. This can lead to postural issues and make it hard to move around in bed. Take a look at the sinkage when I stand in the middle of the mattress:

  • Mattress Only
    • 5 inches
  • Mattress with Topper
    • 7 inches

It feels much more reminiscent of a medium plush mattress. In terms of indentation load deflection, this product weighs in between 14-18. Twelve is very soft and typically found near the comfort layer while 50 is very firm and more common near the base.

Fourteen to 18 is pretty plush. I think sleep partners with varied preferences could benefit from buying a topper smaller than their bed size and placing it on the side of the person who likes it plush.

Motion Transfer

Latex is very responsive, and this is very helpful when it comes to mobility. However, this quality sometimes scares people off when it comes to motion transfer. Especially if you have a sleep partner, you want a sleep surface that does well absorbing energy. This way, when your sleep partner gets up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, you aren’t disturbed.

It’s important to keep in mind the topper is only two inches thick, so motion isolation is going to be heavily dependent on how your mattress performs. Watch the video above to see a side-by-side comparison of a 20-pound medicine ball dropped next to one of equal weight. You can see there isn’t much of a difference.

If you’re looking for a topper that is more likely to absorb motion on a bouncy bed, take a look at these memory foam toppers that may be more up your alley.

Durability Expectations

The queen size topper is 300 bucks. For a two inch thickness, this might sound a little steep, but you have to consider what you’re getting. This product is all-natural latex. Latex is one of the most durable materials in the industry. The cover is made of organic cotton.

The natural properties found in this topper make it one that should hold up very well. So, yes, the initial investment is a little more than other options out there, but it should pay off in the long run.

Maintenance, Protection, Care & Warranty

Although durability expectations for the My Green Mattress Topper are high, there are things you can do to improve longevity. This product is not made for use in the washing machine. If you need to clean it, it’s spot clean only.

There is no warranty for the My Green Mattress topper. This is because it’s thin and will wear faster than the mattress itself. However, it will increase the longevity of your mattress, and you do get 100 nights to try it out to make sure it’s going to be the right sleep solution for you.

Sizing Accommodations

Sometimes sizing can get tricky. This topper is made to provide a highly universal fit, and My Green Mattress is accommodating when it comes to working out a solution when you do run into issues.

It’s worth noting that latex is pretty heavy, and it can be difficult to move. If you’ll be needing something that’s easy to move around or store, this isn’t the best choice out there. However, most of you are probably planning on leaving it on your bed, so this likely isn’t gonna be a huge issue.

Cost

If your sleep surface just isn’t making the cut, you don’t necessarily have to buy a whole new mattress. For less than $500, the My Green Mattress Topper allows you to transform your sleep surface at just a fraction of the cost. Depending on the size you need, here’s what you can expect to pay:

Our Final Verdict

I’m a pretty big fan of the My Green Mattress latex topper. I like the contour it adds, and the soft, certified-organic cover is really comfy. I think it could be an excellent choice if you sleep hot, are looking for something with just a little more bounce, or want to make your sleep surface plusher.

Aside from being 100 percent all-natural, this topper is also OEKO-TEX certified and GOLS certified organic. If you can’t cover the full $300 upfront, My Green Mattress does offer to finance for those who qualify through Affirm. If you have the money to invest in a topper that should hold up, this is definitely a contender.
