Luna Waterproof Mattress Protector

The cost of buying a new mattress is high, so protecting it should be almost as important as sleeping on it. I’ve reviewed a fair few protectors in my time and I know that there’s a real variety of quality on the market, from cheap but good quality products, to expensive, average-type covers and all in between. Next on my list to try is the Luna waterproof mattress protector for a queen-sized bed. I’ve recorded my findings here so you can decide whether or not the Luna is a right fit for you.

Let’s Take a Look at the Luna Waterproof Mattress Protector

The Luna waterproof mattress protector is basically a sheet that you put over your mattress to help protect against any unwanted spilling or accidents of any kind. Luna advertises themselves as a premium bedding and sleep-expert brand that offer accessories to help keep your mattress sanitary and safe while keeping its new look and feel.

Overall, I thought it was a great product, especially for the cost. It appears to be just like any other mattress cover, nothing out of the ordinary. It did its job and was reasonably comfortable to sleep on. But let’s break it down even further so you can see the details of my experience with the Luna.

Features & Benefits

I took into consideration the price, quality, functionality and other customer feedback when scoring this product. And the same as usual, I did the classic spill test to put the level of waterproof protection under the microscope.

Protection

The exact reason that you would be buying this mattress cover is for protection. There’s no other primary reason. And when it comes to protection, this mattress has definitely proved itself. It proved to be a fantastic product, with the guarantee of being 100 percent waterproof working brilliantly.

In a natural environment, I slept on it a few nights to see how it held up with moisture and body sweat from my husband and I. It seemed to do excellent. The mattress was nice and dry underneath the next day, but any moisture was pulled away from my body at night. Awesome!

Putting this to the test, I used pre-prepared liquid to soak into the cover, that was placed over my bed, to weigh up the results. I came back to the sheet periodically throughout the day to check how it was faring, and I was really impressed with the results. The protector acted like a waterproof sponge; bringing in the moisture, spreading it out but never allowing it to seep through onto the mattress.

Spill Test

During the spill test, I placed the Luna waterproof protects across my queen-sized bed, and placed a towel and garbage bag underneath the bottom half of the sheet, coming between it and my mattress. This allowed additional protection in case the cover on top of my mattress didn’t do its job properly. Luckily for me, I didn’t have this problem.

Once I covered the mattress properly, aided by the elastic corners for additional grip, I proceeded to pour the standard 8 ounces of test liquid over the bottom of the bed. After this, I checked back on the mattress at 5 periods during the day – 10 mins, 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, and 8 hours. I did this to follow the progress of the sheet and determine at which times, if any, the product began to fail me.

Coming back to the product at the last 8-hour checkpoint, I was delighted to pull away the Luna cover to see my towel, normal color and bone dry; the protector had done its job magnificently. In this feature, the cover could not have performed any better.

Construction

This cover is very simple to use. Its elastic corners easily helped me fit it on my bed and kept the cover on the whole time I was sleeping. Made from terry cotton on the surface with a layer of waterproof membrane, the sheet offers perfect protection from leaks.

I spent a few nights sleeping on the product and it was soft, easy to fall asleep on and generally comfortable aside from a slight plastic noise when I moved. The waterproof texture may be a little too good, though, as I actually found the temperature of the bed to increase when I slept on it.

It’s totally hypoallergenic, too. So, this is great for anyone who suffers from asthma, eczema, or other dust allergies.

The sides were a little large, even for my pillow top mattress. I tried and tried to make them fit snugly, but after one night, they were loose again. With that being said, the cover itself never moved. It still remained in place and the poofy sides never compromised the way the cover worked.

Comfort

It was acceptable in terms of comfort. The terry cotton surface made it soft underneath my sheets, but I wasn’t fond of the slight plastic sound when I moved. Although, with that being said, I feel like it was so minor that I wouldn’t even notice it after a few weeks.

Heat Retention

So, I’m not sure if it’s the waterproof membrane or not, but I did find myself fairly warm in the middle of the night. And I’m only noting this because it was far more than other protectors I’ve tried.

As you may know from my other reviews, I don’t like to be too warm when I sleep. Now, this could easily be a bonus for some, if they prefer to be nice a cozy and warm.

So, with that being said, the heat retention was high. It sucked in my body heat and held it there all night. I was sweating a bit, but thankfully the cover did its job! My mattress was nice and dry.

Maintenance, Care and Warranty

Similar to the other products within this market, the Luna cover has a 15 year warranty covering all manner of malfunctions you could possibly encounter. I scrolled through a few customer feedback forms and couldn’t find anything that was negative surrounding the eligibility of the warranty.

The care and maintenance instructions are essentially, wash on a medium heat with a small amount of detergent (I used eco-friendly, perfume free), dry in a tumble on a low heat to avoid disintegration and melting of the material or shrink the product to a smaller size. As soon as a spill occurs, make sure you thoroughly wash the product. The Luna protector is also not suitable for hand-washing, although I accidentally spilled some coffee on the stretchy side material and it rinsed out immediately with cold water. That was impressive.

I did find it felt as though it had thinned after I washed it. The quality was still there, and the product held up, fit back on my mattress, etc. But it did feel off, like it was worn or used longer than it had been.

Customer Reviews and Online Feedback

Here are some of the thoughts and experiences of online customers with The Luna Protector.

Protection

A significantly large number of the reviews state how this product is excellent, working well time after time and washing and drying correctly. There are a smaller number of unsatisfactory reviews, which state shrinkage is sometimes a factor and that the waterproof element of the package doesn’t work properly. I never experienced shrinkage, but maybe that’s what the odd thinning was that happened.

Durability

This product, when washed right, was durable, functional and worked great. If you follow the correct washing instructions, you should not have a problem. Although it thinned a bit for me, the quality never lessened nor did the construction.

Feedback on its Features

Most customers found themselves very pleased with the product, as did I. They agreed that the waterproof lining worked wonders and even though the price was a little higher than other covers, this did little to dissuade them from ever purchasing in the future.

Odor

There are no customer complaints in regards to the odor of this product and I must agree, nothing to see (or smell) here.

Customer Support

There are multiple ways that you can contact Luna; through their third party seller, their email via the website and they have customer service via telephone 5 days a week.

Conclusion

Overall, this mattress protector was excellent. It’s not easy to find a high quality product within this niche and they are so hit-and-miss. Although I found problems with the temperature while sleeping on the cover, this was only a minor point. The fact that there are so few negative points from customers who have owned the product for a while make me think that all-in-all you would be happy buying the Luna waterproof mattress. I know I was.

I’d recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great layer of protection for their expensive mattress or to shield a nice guest bed. If you found this review of the Luna helpful at all, or if you have any questions, feel free to comment and share below!
