For people who have pets or young children, there’s fewer more important products to help you out than a mattress protector. While we all love our pets sitting at the end of our bed and we don’t begrudge our young ones having an accident or two, mattresses cost a lot of money, and if you’ve only just bought a fresh one the need – or want – to protect it from getting ruined is top of our agenda.

But how do you choose from the many products available? That’s where I’m here to help. I tested the Lucid Waterproof Mattress Protector for comfort as well as its ability to truly be waterproof.

Lucid are a company that specializes in mattresses and mattress accessories, with both eyes on giving us the best places to lay our heads after a tough day. I’ve taken a look at their premium mattress protector to see just how comfy, waterproof and easy to use it is, which also includes doing the all-important spill test. Let’s see if the Lucid Mattress Protector is the right fit for you!

Breakdown of the Lucid Waterproof Mattress Protector

The Lucid mattress protector is for the person who wants that added security on their bedding, leaving them to be worry free. It’s also great for any guest bed or for those who are in the potty-training stages of raising children.

With a number of nifty features including the obvious waterproofing, elasticated edges or additional comfortable fitting and a deep mattress reach, this seemed at first sight like a solid product. I was impressed by the packaging and the 15-year warranty guarantee. Lucid states their confidence with the product allows them to offer such a warranty, and I must agree this is a fantastic vote of quality and confidence. I was really looking forward to testing out the product.

Features & Benefits

I was excited to take a look at this product. During research, the Lucid website was sleek and impressive, getting across their ethos of good products, made right and I was hoping to find that out myself. It comes in a nifty plastic case with a zipper close. The deep, stretchy sides fit easily over my pillow top mattress. And the surface was nice and soft under my sheets.

Protection

This is the big one, isn’t it? The bold claim on this product is that it protects you 100% from water seeping through onto your mattress. I was excited to put this to the test, and when I did, it performed very well: there was zero leaking through the mattress cover.

My spill test consisted of pouring liquid onto the sheet, followed by checking back on the cover 6 times periodically throughout the day. I also separately tested the sheet by sleeping on it dry, to gauge comfort as well as to test protection from body sweat and such. I found it to be pretty good because like most of these waterproof products, it did make me sweat a little more than I like, but the mattress was good and dry in the morning.

It’s always a little hit and miss when you try a product like this, especially one that has such a heady claim. A lot of products don’t work and others can’t stand the time test, but on each count this product excelled. After the full 8-hour test, the towel underneath the sheet was nice and dry.

Spill Test

When doing the spill test, I fit the cover to my Queen size mattress, which also has a garbage bag and a towel underneath to protect from the liquid in case it was a fail.

This wouldn’t be a problem for this product. Throughout the 6 stages of the test – from 10 minutes up to 8 hours – I found the waterproof cover to be excellent. The water lay on top of the sheet the whole time, if only spreading slightly across the bed, but never into the towel. Although it doesn’t seep in like a sponge like some other high quality products, it certainly passed the spill test with flying colors.

Construction

This sheet is put together nicely, it is made with cotton-blend terry that helps it stay waterproof throughout the night. It comes in a large variety of sizes and has elasticated edges that provide extra grip and strength to the product. The depth of the cover can go up to 22 inches, which is around the right size to fit most mattresses and similar to other covers in the market.

It’s totally hypoallergenic and protects against the common household allergens. It also has the noiseless feature that claims you won’t hear/feel the plastic sensation from the membrane.

Comfort

I found this cover to be really comfortable on my bed. I loved the way it felt and it never made a noise like other protectors do. Sometimes the material that is used on these sheets can be a plastic-like texture that rubs, crinkles and feels horrid to sleep on. That is not the case here. The best thing I can say about the Lucid cover is that it is hardly noticeable through your standard bed sheet.

Heat Retention

I did find that, while sleeping, I was a little too warm for my liking. This often happens with these products, and it’’ usually due to the waterproof membrane underneath. While the surface was nice, soft, and fairly breathable, halfway through the night I did find myself awakened and a little sweaty. Thank goodness for the waterproof feature, though! My mattress was totally dry the next day.

Maintenance, Care and Warranty

The warranty for this product is 15 years full. Lucid states that they offer this great warranty because they are so confident their product will delivery on quality and usability. And it’s fair to say they’re probably right in the short term at least. As I can only test the sheet on the short term, I have to trust it’s continued quality will last years.
To wash this product, only machine wash and do not place in temperatures hotter than a medium heat. If you’re drying the cover in a tumble, only use a low heat. This is because anything hotter than this will cause damage to the waterproofing material and ruin the sheet. Lucid accepts returns within 120 days of purchase outside of the warranty. If you are not completely happy with the product, you can return it within this time to get your money back.

Bonuses

The bonus here is the pricing, for me. It is such an inexpensive product for what you’re getting, it’s really hard to see a reason not to buy it. It’s a sleek product that comes with a great warranty from a reputable company, which is another bonus in itself. I mean, for the cost, you could even get it just for the hypoallergenic and allergen protection alone.

Customer Reviews and Feedback for the Lucid Waterproof Mattress

Protection

There seems to be only rave reviews for the protection given by this product. Like myself, others have found it to be a great product that does exactly what it promises. There have been some negative reviews but I honestly don’t understand how myself. It is possible that these people haven’t dealt with the aftercare properly and this is why the product has failed for them.

Durability

Again, this is mostly a positive range of reviews. I initially found two reviews that stated the product melted in the drier and ripped when washed, which obviously is not ideal, clearly point towards these people not correctly following the instructions on pack. Not the fault of Lucid.

Customer Support

There is a very easily reachable customer support team that you can access by phone or email, as well as FAQ’s that can help you troubleshoot any problems before you contact the company directly. The 15-year warranty is excellent and their 120 day satisfaction guarantee is a good bonus feature, even if I doubt you will use it.

Feedback on its Features

The general feedback on the features is positive, with customers pleased that the waterproof cover helps them protect their mattress. The odd person complained, but as I have said previously, I don’t believe their complaints are down to the quality of the product, more the treatment of it post-purchase.

Odor

There was no odor on my sheet and none reported in anyone else’s review.

Conclusion

There highest compliment you can pay to this type of product is that you trust it to protect your mattress from any level of liquid. I would buy this cover and I would trust it on every bed in my house. The price is fantastic, the quality is good and it makes zero noise when you sleep, and that’s all you can really look for in a mattress protector. I would buy this product, for sure and definitely recommend it.
